Daughtry, ‘September’ — New Song

‘September’ is Daughtry’s new single off their 2009-released studio album ‘Leave This Town.’ Penned by Chris and guitarist Josh Steely, the mid-tempo ballad is inspired by Chris’ childhood memories growing up with his brother in a small town in North Carolina.

“Every time I hear that song it takes me back to my summers in Lasker,” Chris says. “I loved growing up there, but I knew I’d have leave to make something of my life.” The song’s lines, “Yeah, We knew we had to leave this town / But we never knew when and we never knew how / We would up here the way we are” inspired the album’s title.

Siobhan Magnus’s emotional ouster leaves plenty of sad faces

Chart Watch Extra: American Idol’s Million-Sellers

Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want From Me” this week becomes the 26th song by an American Idol contestant to sell 1 million or more digital copies. The striking pop-rock ballad got a big boost from Lambert’s appearances on the show two weeks ago as mentor and performer. Kris Allen, who beat Lambert in the Season 8 finale, also has a digital million-seller. The spry “Live Like We’re Dying,” which was released nine weeks before Lambert’s song, has sold 1,350,000 copies.

Of the 26 million-sellers by Idol contestants, eight are by Season 1 champ Kelly Clarkson. That’s as many as her two closest rivals combined. Carrie Underwood, the Season 4 winner, and Jordin Sparks, the Season 6 champ, have each landed four million-selling downloads. The band fronted by Chris Daughtry, who finished fourth in Season 5, has had three. David Cook, the Season 7 champ, has had two.

Q: You just finished a new version of your single “The Truth” with Pat Monahan. What was it like to work with him? – JennTse
A: I think it was real hard for him to do something for the album, but I think he wanted to do something. He put this little spin on it. It’s been really great, I mean he has a great voice, He’s been really complimentary on what I’ve done so it’s been great.

Season 8 finalist Allison Iraheta will be performing at Robinson’s Place Manila on May 4.

“To my Filipino fans, thank you so much for the support. You guys are awesome. Make sure you check me out at Robinson’s Mall and my album,” Iraheta said.

Idol Worship as Clarkson Soars

The recipe for a successful concert may as well be the right combination of the following: a dash of controversy, a sprinkling of public buzz, a stadium almost filled to the brim with fans of all ages and a healthy serving of talent from the featured performing artist.

Jakarta was lucky that the original “American Idol,” Kelly Clarkson, did not cancel her “All I Ever Wanted” concert on Thursday at the Tennis Indoor Senayan stadium despite the controversy over the cigarette ad sponsorship. However, there was something else being distributed to concertgoers — Fiesta imported condoms, with its tagline of “Safety Can be Fun.”

The concert, slated to start at 8 p.m., began with only a 15-minute delay. Thankfully, there were no opening acts either. The fans came to see Clarkson and the artist was what they got — nonstop for close to two hours — from the get-go.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. –

Melissa revealed she met the singer earlier this week, as well as the rest of the “Idol” contenders backstage at the show while she was on the CBS lot, but Crystal revealed the two had a previous connection. The acoustic guitar Crystal has been using on the show was once signed by Melissa.

“I said, ‘Nice to meet you,’ she goes, ‘I met you two years ago.’” Melissa recounted. “She came backstage to a show I did in Chicago. My drummer knew somebody that knew somebody that knew her. She got backstage and I signed her guitar and that’s the guitar that she uses. That’s my signature.”

Paula plays the diva card

For those wondering why things have been quiet on the Paula Abdul career front — here’s the scoop:

• According to people close to negotiations between the ex-”American Idol” judge and those producing Simon Cowell’s upcoming ”The X-Factor,” as well as those planning the relaunch of a new version of ”Star Search,” it’s Abdul’s tough contract requirements that have caused delays.

Seems Abdul’s reputation as quite the diva continues. Among her ”needs” are very specific — and pricey — demands regarding office and dressing-room decoration and an insistence on a large entourage of publicists, hair stylists and makeup artists (available 24/7, even when not taping), plus a slew of other assistants.

INSIDE STORY: Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir ‘At War’

When skating rivals Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir were battling for a spot on the Olympic podium at the Vancouver Winter Games in February, Weir remarked that showdown would be a great “catfight.”

The dust-up intensified this week off the ice as Olympic gold medalist Lysacek, competing on Dancing with the Stars, and Weir, a three-time U.S. Champion, traded slurs and barbs.

“We are at war,” Weir told PEOPLE on Thursday. “My claws are out.”

Now, Lysacek is explaining his comments to ET: “I let my personal feelings cloud my judgment in how I answered a journalist’s question about Stars on Ice and Johnny that I should never have answered. I should have known better. Best wishes and congratulations to Johnny as he opens the new season of Ice Theatre of NY and I wish him well in all of his future endeavors.”

Glee: The Billboard Cover Story

It’s six hours into the taping of the “Glee” season finale and the audience at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, Calif.-made up of Facebook and Twitter fans of the show, some of whom have flown in from across the country just for the taping-is getting restless. Fueled by just Dixie cups of water and fruit, blood sugar is lagging and patience with the overhead balloon lights being tweaked by a millimeter yet again is wearing thin.

Actress Jane Lynch, who plays the obstreperous cheerleader coach/drill sergeant Sue Sylvester, comes to the balcony to answer some questions and keep the crowd engaged — or at least awake. One fan asks her what has been her favorite bitchtacular “Sue line” from the script.

“Actually, my favorite line hasn’t aired yet,” Lynch says, “but it’s one she says to Kurt, the gay kid. ‘Loving musical theater doesn’t make you gay — it makes you awful.’ ”

Radio stations have spun The Truth 19 times this week. Here is the breakdown (monitored stations only)

    KLLC (San Francisco) – 13
    WPST (Trenton, NJ) – 3
    KMXB (Las Vegas) – 1
    KQKQ (Omaha, NE) – 1
KMHX (Santa Rosa, CA) – 1

That’s in addition to the 4 spins it got last week, 1 each from stations in Chicago, Las Vegas, San Diego and Spokane

EDIT: Actually it may include the 1 spin from LV, since “this week” is defined as the last 7 days on this chart

Last week IIHU got 5 spins, with 4 of them coming from Canadian stations in Montreal and Saskatoon. The one US station to play it was WWDC in Washington, DC — which is listed as an alternative rock station

for some reason, IIHU isn’t listed in the custom reports, so I can’t get this week’s spins. Maybe because it doesn’t have an add date yet?

I agree that both Johnny and Evan can zip it. Johnny shouldn’t try to out Evan, especially when Johnny won’t answer the gay question himself. Second, it’s none of our business either way. I don’t care who’s sleeping with who.

As for Daughtry, I second your observation about his new album. I love his voice, but the second doesn’t even come close to what his first album was. This second has three songs I like, the others are pretty much filler.

As for Kris, I think the media don’t find him very interesting and try to inject Adam into his interviews to draw readers in. Yes it’s not right, and I hoped they would stop after all this time.

    Review of Carrie’s Fayetteville concert:

Carrie Underwood soars to new heights

And an article about how Crown Coliseum was able to book Carrie: Hard work, luck led to booking country star. It’s an interesting read re: touring.

What the public doesn’t know is the business side of the booking and promotions business, Zaccaro said.

For example, top-level acts such as Jay-Z, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty may have a $500,000 guarantee – the amount of money they’re guaranteed to be paid per show.

“And that’s just for them stepping foot in the building,” Zaccaro said. “We’re not even talking about catering, security, insurance, production, transportation or advertising costs.”

Those costs can, on average, add another $100,000 to $150,000 to a promoter’s bottom line, Zaccaro said. For a venue such as the Crown Coliseum, which can offer 8,000 tickets for a major show, things can get costly quickly.

“At our capacity, just to cover that kind of guarantee,” Zaccaro said, “that comes to $62.50 a ticket. Add all the other costs, and we’re looking at around $81.25 – just to break even.”

  • MRM

Is this true? I am devastated if Toledo is truly sold out! Dumb question but how can you tell? I have been on ticketmaster since 10am. My husband on one computer and me on another. • Caden

Toledo has been on sale since the 28th. The scalpers probably bought a lot of them during the pre-sales like they do for everyone. I hate scalpers! Then when they can’t re-sell the tickets there are a ton of empty seats.

  • BestAI

ETA: Seems like the 2nd Nokia concert sold out as well.

Looks like someone missed the boat on NYC bookings. If Pac OC can book two 8500 seat concerts, NYC should have booked something close to that. At a minimum half the seating of So. CA. So much for my vacation plans in NYC. I’m really trying to plan a short trip somewhere (Vancouver scratch, NYC scratch) to see Adam.

The question is what percentage of these tickets were bought by scalpers? I’ve seen reports of tickets on stubhub with the sellers asking for more than $1000? That’s nuts.

So if scalpers bought a lot of the tix and can’t unload them on fans willing to pay xtimes face value, what may be a sellout on paper won’t be so in terms of people at the show.

  • Jx223

The grand prize is to get an a trip to see Danny perform on the Sugarland tour on October 15 in Tampa, Florida. This is the latest date I have seen so far for Danny on this tour. Prior to this the latest date I had seen for him was in August. I am glad that he will be doing at least one tour date with Sugarland in October, and hopefully he will have more tour dates with them after August.

I guess they set high prices in the beginning then lower them closer to the concert time. I think it’s all supply/demand. If no one will buy the tickets at those ridiculous prices they will lower the price.

ETA: Remember MJ saying for the Ai concerts you could find really good seats on stubhub the day before or the day of the concert for reasonable prices. Maybe it will be the same?

When it gets close to the day of the concert, the prices go way down. I saw a couple of tickets for the Vancouver concerts a little above face value the day before the show. The day of the show they were all gone.

  • Judee

So if scalpers bought a lot of the tix and can’t unload them on fans willing to pay xtimes face value, what may be a sellout on paper won’t be so in terms of people at the show.

No one cares about that. only the fans are screwed. the venue and Adam’s label are happy they sold all tickets, they don’t care who paid for them. I remember when Miley Cyrus went on the first tour with JoBros as special guests, every show sold out immediately and the parents were paying literally thousands $ to get their kiddies tickets as christmas presents. it was nuts. the answer of media: good for Miley!

Its gonna take awhile for that stuff to build up especially since he’s forgein. Can we give him some time please, people were saying the same thing in Austraila it just took time.

Thanks much Teri63. Took your suggestion and signed up as a member. I had also signed up on Ticketmaster with the venue and Adam as favorites, so I’ll just keep checking my email. Hope you get tickets as well. June 15 is actually my birthday, so hoping to treat myself to a great concert.

Before the Riverside box office clerk told me anything, she asked if I was signed up with their site, and it looked like you can click links on their site to get tickets — although, truthfully, it probably just links to Ticketmaster. Soooo, I’m going to take your lead, as well, and list this venue as a favorite with Ticketmaster. I already have Adam as a favorite, there, of course, but this is serious business, and we can’t cover too many bases. LOL!

Good luck to you, too — What an awesome birthday treat that would be! I live in the Chicago area, and the Hammond, IN, casino gig is, according to Mapquest, just about 45 minutes away, so I’ll be trying that one, too. I’d rather go in Milwaukee because Allision will be playing, but seeing that so many seem to be having difficulty getting tickets, I’ll be trying everywhere that’s remotely close!

Edit: Oops — I messed those block quotes up big time! LOL!

I agree that both Johnny and Evan can zip it. Johnny shouldn’t try to out Evan, especially when Johnny won’t answer the gay question himself. Second, it’s none of our business either way. I don’t care who’s sleeping with who.

Speaking of concerts, Kelly Clarkson’s Manila concert was FANTASTIC! She sounded tons better live than on her record! She hit all the right notes, not a single one out of place. Her singing seemed so effortless! I’m still on a high! Kelly, you’re now my second favorite Idol, after DC!

Awwww thanks for sharing. :) I love kelly.. and yes, she can hit all those notes…

Does anyone know about Adam doing the X-Factor Finland? If so when is it? Should be coming up soon.

  • Indigobunting

I guess they set high prices in the beginning then lower them closer to the concert time. I think it’s all supply/demand. If no one will buy the tickets at those ridiculous prices they will lower the price.

ETA: Remember MJ saying for the Ai concerts you could find really good seats on stubhub the day before or the day of the concert for reasonable prices. Maybe it will be the same?

This is true for most hyped concerts. Within hours of the Sugarland concert I am attending; there were no good seats left. We bought ours as soon as they went on sale and they’re not good. But they released more this week for next week’s concert.
Same for AI concert- you could get almost front row seats the week of the concert for face value.

This is the way of concerts! Scalpers buy all the tickets- that is why the concerts sell out and they advertise ridiculous high prices. As long as people don’t panic you can get your tickets close to the time at a good price.

And, as you can see from that one tweet; the nasty scalpers prey on us fans by tweeting that it is sold out when it isn’t.

Casinos do it too. For Danny’s HOChunk Casino- Right at the time of tickets going on sale there were only very back seats available. The casino itself appears to have bought up the whole front section for their VIPs, etc. Will they release any closer to the date of this sold out concert?? IDK, but I bought my crappy seat anyway right away so I could plan :( but not at a scalper price of course.

I’m originally from the UK so I know a thing or two about their stations. Far as I can see, so far the promo hasn’t had much of an impact.

Really? Weird because I help run a UK site and the UK people think the promo is working okay. I’ll have to check with them. Radio 1 called one of them to record the introduction they used for FYE. We don’t know if he will chart this week or not. They said the charts for next week would be more telling than the ones for this week.

They spun him for the first time today so it’s not surprising he isn’t on their playlist.

It was me. I thought 5k is too big for him (and i still do), i mean Daughtry performs in that kind of venues. But 2k for New York is too small, he would have filled bigger venue specifically there. But it’s difficult, Cook performed there last year (right?) and had only one show (???), even though he sold twice as many albums as Adam, so the label probably couldn’t know.

Actually I think the label did know. When the Nokia concert was first posted on AO they had both dates listed. But quickly 1 was taken down. So I am guessing they assumed there would be enough people for both. Which makes it even weirder that they booked that size of venue. Maybe they just couldn’t get a larger one in that time frame, with other acts already having them booked??

  • Studio57

Yep- Borgata is SOLD OUT. And they even removed the seats that they usually have to make it general admission ( they still have bleachers in the back but the rest is standing room only). Also what else is really funny is Joel McHale is going to be at the Borgata on the same night at the smaller vunue there and the 8:00 show is sold out and they added an 11:00 one ( ETA_ That one sold out too, lol). I can just imagine all the husbands of the people going to see Adam are going to see Joel ( like my husband and son, lol).

I thought the lengthy discussion Adam fans mentioned were 3-4k venues, not 5k. Even if his high-end venue seating was 4k, he could fill it, but he doesn’t have to sell out in two minutes. There is nothing wrong with taking two weeks to sell out a venue. As it turns out, Adam’s venue sizes are all over the place, from around a thousandish up to 8500. Average was around 3.5k. I know one venue not listed yet (I called) has 6k seating.

Toledo Update – I called ticketmaster and they confirmed there are no longer tickets available for Club Omni at this time. This is a 2000 person venue and is general admission with standing room only. I am actually surprised it sold so quickly. Next time I will be more prepared with the presale code and I will call ticketmaster instead of trying to purchase online. That is what I have learned over the last 4 hours.

I would like to say thanks to everyone here. I have been following this site off and on for the past year. I really appreciate the constant flow of info and news and all the comments this blog offers. I usually only have my iPhone which is why I hardly ever comment. Hope everyone has a better time getting tickets than I have had. I still cannot believe I do not have tickets yet. Oh well, patience patience patience…heh! What is going on with the Royal Oak venue? It isn’t listed on ticketmaster.

Well if they do add more NY dates it will be later in Aug. because June is pretty much full and I am assuming that the 2 1/2 months that Adam was talking about for his tour are all ready books just waiting for finaliztion. So if there is more NY dates it logistically makes more sense that will be because they exstended his tour in the US. I can’t see them throwing a NY concert inbetween playing in AZ and TN lol.

“September” is my favorite track on Leave This Town but I was hoping one of the more rockin songs would have been the next single. Stupid RCA.

Ghost of Me and September were both recently added to Daughtry’s myspace page — tracks always show up there before a single’s released.

Wow that is a lot of touring – has it done much for him in the states?

One of the benefits of touring is it keeps an artist’s music visable to fans and the press, and helps support album sales. DCTR stayed in the BB200 for 37 weeks, supported by radio play and the neverending tour. Dave also got a nice new house in LA out of the deal, lol. Playing a lot of small shows is a ton of work though, and not really suitable to the kind of show Adam wants to do. I’d expect Adam will do fewer, larger shows and a shorter tour, but ending up selling roughly the same numbr of tickets overall.

Laury sorry if my post made you sad it was supposed to be full of snark but I guess my frustration leaked through.

I really don’t know what they have planned for tour dates. It makes me sad to think they may skip a whoel section of the US like the Pacific Northwest but Cook didn’t have any concerts planned there until like late fall I think after his tour was exstended a bunch of times. So it makes me really worried that they didn’t plan any dates near me for his first tour. And there is no guarentee that Adam will get exstentions on his tour. He may just skip over to Europe instead of touring more here :(

For all we know they will load up the tours in the Midwest, East coast and southern Cal and leave the rest SOL. Cuz right now that what it is looking like.

Laury I hope they have more gigs in your area I really do. I just hope there is at least one in mine.

Thanks for this insightful post girlygirl. This gives me renewed confidence that The Truth will be successful on HAC radio. Although we know that Kris can successfully cross-over onto Pop, I think his natural place is on HAC. A lot of artists have had very successful careers by staying near the top on the HAC charts. It’s great to see Kris in such good company. I love Daughtry and the Script and Whatya Want From Me is by far my favorite track on Adam’s album. I think The Truth will be up there soon enough.

Although I was a little disappointed Jive didn’t test pop radio again with the second single, I think we’ve all seen that Pop can be a crapshoot. Any format where Kesha has been more successful than Kelly Clarkson in the past year demonstrates a distinct lack of musical taste in my opinion.

Usher: Talent shows are killing music

R&B star Usher has accused TV talent shows of killing the music industry.

Just weeks after the singer appeared as a mentor on the current season of “American Idol,” Usher has blasted the show and its rivals for making talented singers celebrities and then casting them aside.

I thought 5k is too big for him (and i still do), i mean Daughtry performs in that kind of venues. But 2k for New York is too small, he would have filled bigger venue specifically there.

I think it would be wise to start with reasonable size venues first to gauge the fan’s reactions, then adding more dates with bigger or smaller sized venues depending on how the ticket sales go. It’s bad publicity to have to cancel dates (Jordin, hah!) or the tour selling badly – it sounds good to have 100% sold in a 2000 capacity venue than to have a 5000 capacity venue only half-sold even if fewer tickets are sold in the smaller venue.

If Adam can sell out 3-4000 capacity venues regularly, then it will be impressive for someone headlining his first tour. It might also explain why the Idol tour did so well last year – he might not have the greatest number of fans compared to past idols, but what fans he has are very passionate.

Sorry, I added the extra words “compared to past idols” but too late for you to see. I meant compared to the likes of Kelly or Carrie, or even Daughtry or David Cook. Adam certainly isn’t selling as many CD as the others, but those who bought his CD are also more likely to go to his shows.

Really? Weird because I help run a UK site and the UK people think the promo is working okay. I’ll have to check with them. Radio 1 called one of them to record the introduction they used for FYE. We don’t know if he will chart this week or not. They said the charts for next week would be more telling than the ones for this week.

They spun him for the first time today so it’s not surprising he isn’t on their playlist.

    lorismile:

Thank you so much for keeping us updated on how things are going in the UK. It’s nice to have someone who is actually in contact with people in the UK to give us the FACTS of what’s going on!

When is Adam going to be on the talk show everyone is so excited about? From what I understand- this show an EXTREMELY popular late night show!

wordnerdarchie or other David Cook fans. Do you know for how many people he performed last year alltogether (or the average attendance per show) ? thx

LOL, Usher. You would have a lot more credibility with that gripe if you hadn’t *just* been on Idol.

Does anyone here know how you can find out the writing cedits on a song… wanted to know who wrote Jason Derulos Ridin’ Solo?

  • Judee

I quite don’t get Usher’s point. Isn’t there a reson why Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry survived and others did not? there are thousands and thousands of artists not coming from talent shows with major label contracts who’s albums flop just as much hard as some idol’s. So if someone goes through the whole think and 20 million people like them and vote for them, why not to give them a recording contract? I don’t think Usher knows under what kind of pressure they are for the couple of months. Somebody please explain what he meant by the idols are killing music. I mean this is coming from a mouth that ‘discovered’ Justin Bieber. Are idols really killing music more than fetus is?

  • Laury

Idols are Killing music that is why the music needs more artist like Justin Beiber.

  • Judee

thanks guys for the stats. David was certainly busy last year:). He also played lot of big venues not just small ones.
Ok here comes a stupid question. What exactly is a fair and why are they so big and the tickets are so cheap (i know Adam is playing some fair for 8k people and that is definitely not his normal venue size)? Are the people there to see the concert or is it just a sidekick to something else?

Danny played to a sold out house last night in Nashville. Newcomer Chris Jansen (his single had the most adds at county radio last week) opened for him.
Bria Mansfield and also Mark Bright attended.
Here is a pic from the stage:

    http://twitpic.com/1jyri0

This just amazes me! Danny finished 3rd on AI and didn’t have a record deal right away. He was ridiculed on the blog sites so much that I thought he wouldn’t even get an album deal. Then we he did- people thought he wouldn’t do well because country music fans wouldn’t accept him.

Here Danny is selling out an 1,800 venue where HE IS the headliner and HE HAS an opener! (and he got good prices for tickets) I’m thrilled for Danny and his fans!

  • wellhesback

Judee – people attend fairs for all kinds of reasons. some for the fair & the music, some for just the headliner. But the headliner usually has separate ticket sales from just general fair admission, you know. I went to a fair basically to see David Cook last summer (I also saw him at a college and also a theatre).

Usher is complete and utter asshole. Sorry, but to go on the show, get the huge, nice sales bump and then to dump on the show, is nothing short of disgusting. I understand not everyone is successful coming off the show but to say that deludes the music business is wrong! The music business is deluded by auto-tune, illegal downloads, no-talent Disney tweens, etc.. not American Idol.

I don’t know why there was the discussion Adam couldn’t fill 3-4k venues when Cook had numerous huge venues 5-20k venues.

What venue did Cook/Archuleta play at where they could accommodate 110k (110,000) people in The Philippines?

  • wordnerdarchie

What venue did Cook/Archuleta play at where they could accommodate 110k (110,000) people in The Philippines?

It was an outdoor venue (called the Mall of Asia Open Grounds) If you didn’t buy a ticket, you could hang right outside the grounds, still hear the concert and glimpse it on the giant screens. It sold over 50,000 tickets, but there were estimates that there were double that due to the perimeter.

Oh, I just heard David Cook’s “Heroes” again on the Kentucky Derby coverage.

ETA: Correction: 42050 was the inside sold ticket amounts, with news reports of over 100,000.

Tweet from @collective_soul: “apparently there were 115,000 people out to hear David Cook cover our song last night in Manila”

The first concert (at 8,500 seat capacity) is already sold out and they have added a second night. You have to purchase tickets to attend these concerts. The ticket prices range from $20-$50. The ticket price does include admission to the fair for the day so you can go early or stay later and enjoy the fair. However, a general fair admission ticket DOES NOT include admission to Adam’s concert. You have to purchase a separate ticket for that.

R&B star Usher has accused TV talent shows of killing the music industry.

Just weeks after the singer appeared as a mentor on the current season of “American Idol,” Usher has blasted the show and its rivals for making talented singers celebrities and then casting them aside.

I can’t help but think this last part is his point. In the blurb I clicked on he was talking about management. Note he says the singers are talented, he’s not complaining about them, moreso the whole swim or sink mentality of the management after the fact. At least that’s what I took from this.

  • Indigobunting

I’m thrilled for Danny and his fans!

Thank you Tiger92. I can always tell how sincere you are and your supportive posts are so welcome. Danny and his fans were indeed put through the wringer (and occasionally still are) last season so it is indeed validation when (deserved)good things happen for him and when fans of other idols say nice things it warms our hearts.

I agree Usher is being a jerk. What is his problem with Idol; especially after they most assuredly gave him a big Idol bump for his new album.

And most of the top contestants off Idol are a heck of a lot better SINGERS than what passes for some pop stars these days, yeessh.

“I can’t help but think this last part is his point. In the blurb I clicked on he was talking about management. Yeah, I thought so too, but he also talked aboutmass production of versions of the lost art so IDK.

    ETA: girlygirl, I think it’s 25 to 1 now.

That doesn’t sound like Usher is blasting the Idol contestants. He seems to be saying that TPTB don’t support these contestants and help them build viable careers once they are off the show — something I would agree with, at least in part.

  • BestAI

Danny and his fans were indeed put through the wringer (and occasionally still are) last season so it is indeed validation when (deserved)good things happen for him and when fans of other idols say nice things it warms our hearts

I was probably one of those Adam fans who really disliked Danny because of his relatives and pastor. After Adam and his mother disputed that Adam and Danny didn’t get along, I started changing my tune. If a mother is quoted, then it is believable. Then towards the end of the tour, you could see how chummy Adam and Danny were becoming (they walked off the stage arms around each other).

So, I did a complete turnaround about Danny when I could see that Danny and Adam were, in fact, friendly, and both of them saying they were. I really started to feel bad about how Danny got such a bad rap during the season. That could be one reason he didn’t make it into the finale — all the negative talk about him.

With that said, I know he was very, very saddened by his long-time girlfriend/wife’s death, has a huge heart, and has an incredible voice, who should have longevity in the music industry.

Kris had two concerts here in the Philippines. One in Manila and one in Cebu. These two cities are probably the two largest metropolitan areas in the Philippines. Kris headlined both concerts coz he performed last but all acts actually performed full sets. I attended the one in Manila so that’s the one I know more about. It was held at the McKinley Hills open grounds which is different from the Davids venue. The venue was definitely smaller and was a more high end area than the David concert venue. The Manila concert was attended by 17,000 people I think but I have no idea how many attended the Cebu one. I think that was pretty good concidering he had two concerts here and only has 1 hit song when he came. Also, compare it to Kelly’s concert here yesterday which wasn’t sold out and considering the smaller venue I think maybe 8,000 people at the most could have attended that concert so Kris did pretty well here.

I wonder if Adam is not that popular in The Philippines. Both Davids performed there, as did Kris, but Adam has not yet been invited. :(

I always thought The truth will do well on HAC, i don’t understand what all the drama is about. Kris’ fans are just probably pissed Train wanted sing the bridge, but seriously, if some train tards will buy the song just because Pat’s on it, it’s good, right?

I don’t think train tards are going to be eating this single up just because of Pat. So far Train has only sold 240K (ish) albums. They are way down from their popularity 8 – 10 years ago. Their last album about 6(?) years ago tanked.

We all know that Hey Soul Sister did fabulous!!! and hopefully will help them find some new fans. Any bump that Kris on The Truth from his Pat association may end up having more to do with the smashing HSS single than the name of Train. Well thats just my opinion.

BTW – I love old train.. their last 2 albums, not so much – but loved HSS.

  • girlygirl

    Koshka

Train’s album may not be selling well, but Hey Soul Sister is a smash single and their new single that was released in late March is already moving rapidly up the charts. So The Truth has a shot to do quite well, since added to these facts, Kris’s own single was a pretty big hit.

Who knows… but didn’t someone in the Philippines tried to name drop Adam in conjunction with Kris? Wasn’t it that Philippines is great for live performances, but not so much on album sales? Maybe that’s why he hasn’t performed there, because there isn’t a big promo advantage. IDK, maybe they just don’t like him. *shrug*

He is probably more popular than Kris but I can’t really site any sources. I for one am a Kris fan though. I don’t know why he hasn’t been invited here though considering he is quite similar to a lot of Korean pop groups which are extremely popular here right now. Maybe, and this is just pure speculation in my part, it’s cos of his image and that the Philippines is a very religious Catholic nation.

Right, then we agree about train…. Train’s album strength is not going to be a benefit, their hardcore fans don’t seem to be there anymore.. As I said the Train single smashed and will no doubt have an influence, but the source of the influence maybe from the success of the single, rather than the group’s fan base per my previous comment.

Also I said nothing about the chances of The Truth doing well or not, I was only talking about the Pat bump or influence.

ETA: Above is poorly written, but I think you get my point. :)
Also.. what chart is the other Train song on? HAC? I haven’t even heard it yet. *goes to check* Ok.. I see it on HAC, wonder why it isn’t on top40. I’ll have to check and see if it somewhere below 40. *runs off to check*.. hmm not even in the 50-200 range.. much not have released it to top40. Strange. Wonder if they are looking to only push HAC?

Jonathan Ross is a huge deal for Adam. He is almost completely unknown in the UK and Jonathan Ross is the best paid television and radio host. For Adam to go there is like Justin Gaston getting american idol performance (in terms that getting highprofile gig without having a career). I was really surprised. It must have been Simon Fuller’s job and he has to have some serious connections to the team on the show. I remember last year crazies tweeted Jonathan about having Adam and he responded (kind of sarcastically) he’ll have Adam after he’ll have couple of hits, so they have something to talk about (so basically saying: ‘he is nobody, why would i have him on my show, when i interview people like Gaga, Eminem, Daniel Craig or Tom Cruise?’). so yes it is kinda big deal for him. but his profile went a bit down after the russell brand incident,so maybe the talk show is struggling now. he is leaving BBC in july anyway.

  • kevin424

koshka, I think you do have a point there about album sales. Not much people here buy album cos piracy is very rampant in the Philippines. Its pretty much the stndard here whether it be TV shows, movies or music. Everyone and I do mean everyone either downloads or buys pirated stuff. I know lots and lots of people who never buy albums yet their iPod’s are always up to date. That’s really a problem here. I do know a lot of Adam fans that never bothered to buy the album. I, along with some Kris fans I know, did buy Kris’s album though. :)

Adam is at #46 on the UK Official Charts list. It says he’s been on for 5 weeks. I’m guessing it’s import sales generated from the playing of his video. If he gets to Top 40 there, the stations should play him more regularly.

Somehow I think other Idol contestants would love the opportunity to be on his show. I don’t think any of them, or their fans, would brush their appearance aside so easily. I think this is an amazing opportunity for Adam. He is truly a new artist in the UK and the fact that he is going on the show at the very beginning of his career there is a pretty good.

  • tiger92

    fadetowhite:

The most recent viewing figures for Jonathan Ross in the UK are about 2.9 million about a year ago. So no, this is not an EXTREMELY popular chat show :lol

The population in the UK is 62 million compared to 309 million in the US. We think Oprah has a good viewership with 8 million. It seems that close to 3 million is a pretty good number for a talk show in a country that is one-fifth the size of the US.

Maybe Jonathan Ross doesn’t have the viewership that the X-factor has, but 2.9 million may still mean it is a popular show and a good spot to get. Oprah only has 8 million vs. AI’s 20 million, but no one is going to say that a gig on Oprah isn’t a positive thing. In fact, sometimes Oprah can give an artist a VERY nice bump- like what happened with Adam and his album sales!

ETA: I see now where JR has 5 million viewers! Sounds like a pretty good audience in the UK to me! Thanks once again :) for the facts, Lorismile!

  • lorismile

applauds tiger92!!!! Did you ever know that your my hero?? :-)

so technically he has about 8 million between radio and TV, at least from a year ago. (yes I know some/most are probably the same people) (I’m being snarky)

  • Mary102

Tiger92 just took the words out of my mouth but I was gonna say doesn’t the UK have a much smaller population than the US? So of course the ratings for the shows will not be the same as in the US.

Sounds like amazing promo for Adam! :-)

  • Studio57

So lets do the math: if JR has an audience of 5 million in a country that is 1/5 the size of the US that pretty much is the AI audience ( well, maybe not THIS years audience ;)).

    edit:

  • Mary102

Oh and Adam seems to be growing a lot still on HAC! That’s awesome! I finally hear him all the time now in DC!

  • BestAI

I did find it interesting, the posters from the UK said it would be a huge deail if Adam could get booked on the Jonathan Ross show. They equated it to getting booked on Oprah, but Oprah would never book someone unkown. So, when Adam did get booked, needless to say, they were pretty excited. As Mary said, this is good promotion for Adam.

  • smeggingnuts

Yes, but fadedtowhite(or whatever, rushed and should be getting ready to go out, no offense to ya, love the poster) is in the UK as well. So not seeing as it’s non-UK people who are trying to put Jonathan Ross into some perspective. Which again, don’t care about any of his ratings. Guy is high-frickin’larious. I mean check him out with people that aren’t even as out there as John Barrowman, like Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman, results? Still frickin’ funny as hale.

So again bottomline, me, my needs. Guys I like together being funny. Yeah, pretty much there and bollocks the ratings.

  • aa618892

but his profile went a bit down after the russell brand incident,

Re- Jonathan Ross- Can someone explain what the Russell Brand incident was?

  • Judee

I don’t think Adam would have a chance on X-factor even if it was running right now. It’s for chosen ones with number 1 hits and albums. The show is viewed by 13 mil people on average (last season), it’s like if 65 mil would be watching idol in America (proportionally). It’s A-list guests only. i think everybody that performed last season went No.1 next week, because of the huge audience. That’s why people were campaining against the winners single, because people were sick that anybody who appears on that show goes straight to No. 1 and are basically ruining the competion.
I can’t wait for X-factor in the US. I think it will be enormous. yay! Simon Cowell surely knows how to produce a show. I don’t blame him he’s sick of idol, when he sees Ken’s amateurism.

  • Hazehel

I don’t know why there was the discussion Adam couldn’t fill 3-4k venues when Cook had numerous huge venues 5-20k venues.

The big venues are fairs and festivals which may have a high number of captive audience and those who who attend aren’t necessarily fans. We are talking about doing a show where there isn’t any other attractions apart from what’s being put on the stage by Adam or Cook and their opening acts, i.e. we are talking about them being the only main big draw, those who attends would be by and large fans who pay just to see them. It would be very good if Adam can fill 3-4K venues regularly for someone doing his first tour.

Oh, and that Jonathan Ross is a moron. Couldn’t stand his silly school boy humour. Some of his interviews were quite frankly embarrassing, like the time when he gawped and made lewd suggestions to Gwyneth Paltrow.

  • Judee

Re- Jonathan Ross- Can someone explain what the Russell Brand incident was?

He was a guest on Russell Brand’s radio show and they left couple telephone messages on a 79-old actor Andrew Sachs phone about Russell Brand’s sex encounter with his granddaughter. People were complaining (it was on BBC radio 2, the uproar was probably because it is not commercial radio, basically the queen owns BBC) and Russell quit the show and Jonathan Ross was suspended for 3 month from all his BBC activities (radio show+late night) and then his salary was cut a bit after he returned. You can google it Jonathan Ross, Russell Brand controversy or something…

  • sr4mjc

Late to the discussion, but I saw Cook the day after Thanksgiving last year, so very late in the tour, and I’d say the audience was fairly mixed on male/female and ages all over the place. Those waiting by the bus for pictures were mostly women in the upper 20s and up. It was an awesome show.

I was lucky to get 2 tickets to Adam’s 6/23 Nokia theater show today. And for some reason something changes and I can’t make it, I won’t be selling them for a dime more than I paid for them. I’m sure I can find an Adam fan that missed out. It’s horrible that scalpers do this to the fans. Supply and demand though, I get it.

Well I’m not English so I have no idea how big a deal Ross. But if Brits say his show is a big deal, I believe them. When was FYE (album) officially released in England? I’m interested in the numbers there. Although again if someone in the know says Adam hasn’t made a big impact there (yet) I’ll believe them as well.

Please no one accuse me of an unwholesome interest in the careers of Adam (or other Idols). This is an Idol blog you know. :)

  • certain1

I’m a bit confused, if Adam’s concert is part of the O.C. Fair how were they able to add a second appearance. The main point of fair concerts is to offer a variety of artists to attract people to come and spend the day and spend lots of money. These affairs are usually booked way in advance(the fair managers attend conventions to see who is available and their prices to plan accordingly). In all my years being involved in fair on both the County and State level I can never recall them adding a second performance on this short a notice unless someone else cancelled.

  • smeggingnuts

    Certain1
Maybe they books both ahead of time, and waited to see how well the first one sold before announcing the second. They did that with Adams nokia concert in NY

  • wordnerdarchie

It’s interesting to hear the answers I’ve heard regarding FYE release in England. There’s been discussions regarding this on another board that I frequent. Some of the posters are from England. They’ve said many times that FYE was released in England months ago, just not promoted. According to them, it is a re-release with promotion this time around. I don’t know what’s the real story. But they insist that the CDs they held in their hands in Nov./early December were not imports. Now I don’t care one way or the other, I’m just relaying the gist of earlier discussions.

  • Hazehel

Well his humor is very British (obviously), but i disagree that it’s a school boy type of humour, exactly the opposite actually.

Oh course it is schoolboy puerile kind of humour. For example the time when he interviewed David Cameron (who may possibly be the Prime Minister very soon) he asked him if he had sexual fantasy about Mrs Thatcher while masturbating. Dare any interviewer in the US ask question like that to Barrack Obama or John McCain and not have people thinking that the interviewer is a complete moron?

  • BestAI

Adam has said himself that his CD and single are just being released in the UK. Someone is not telling the truth, and it’s not likely Adam.

Maybe they were pirated downloads and don’t want to admit it.

  • Studio57

People must be as confused as I was about this OC Fair. It is not a fair, per se, that usually runs for a few days to a week in the summer and ends with the big headliner. It goes on all summer (ETA: ALL YEAR) and has all different types of events. Adam is part of the concert series. It’s basically like any other large outdoor ampitheatre or fairgrounds. People buying the tickets for this are buying them to see Adam ( or Orianthi).

Does it really matter when it was released? Its kinda like the script releasing their album without promo. Who would really buy an unknown. I would think that the beginning of promo would be a better thing to watch. Perhaps what they mean is that they released the single?

BestAI, I honestly don’t know what to believe anymore, since these posters have also been been talking a long time about being able to download the CD from UK Itunes. I suppose it could it be possible that Adam wasn’t aware it was being sold in the UK this whole time. It is puzzling.

On another topic, did anyone here get tickets to Adam’s concert in Mystic Lake? I saw posted that tickets weren’t available this morning on the regular sale (presale started yesterday). It sounds like they sold fast. If you did get tickets, you’ll be in for a great show. I love that venue.

But they insist that the CDs they held in their hands in Nov./early December were not imports.

I help run a UK website and we get inside information from Sony sometimes. The UK version of the CD hasn’t been released yet. The actual UK version is being released on May 3rd. The UK girls that help out with the site have all had the import version since November which they ordered online. It’s possible the people at the other blog you mention may not even be aware it’s an import version. I don’t think they are lying, I just think don’t realize the difference. There was an article written released that mentioned he charted on just imports alone.

I honestly don’t know what to believe anymore, since these posters have also been been talking a long time about being able to download the CD from UK Itunes

I believe this is true, that the US version was on there. I have asked my friends how he was charting when it wasn’t officially launched yet and I was informed people were buying the import version.

Technically, in the global world, the minute a CD is first released in any country it is available worldwide. I guess, for me, I count the actual UK version release as the official date, but I can see where you and these posters are coming from thinking it was November.

  • tiger92

To add to the UK release info:

itunes UK have had both Kris & Adam’s albums available since 13th and 20th November respectively. Their singles including No Boundaries are also there, as is Allison’s but sadly, not her album. They are priced at 7.99 which is not an import price, nor is there any mention of them being imports but the tracklisting is exactly the same.

I guess they were made available due to the increased popularity of AI in the UK but of course without any promotion whatsoever. I believe that Kris was also set to release a week before Adam (saw it on a future release thingy) but it would seem that his release has been postponed for now. Maybe they’ll go with with TT as lead single?

All the info is on UK itunes, just change countries for a looksee.

ETA I would agree that the official UK release for Adam, complete with new tracklisting is 3rd May.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

itunes UK have had both Kris & Adam’s albums available since 13th and 20th November respectively.

Perhaps they were available for download by you couldn’t get the physical CDs? Also were the tracks the same as the US ITUNES or are they the tracks that are listed above which include the four additional songs?

It might be an issue of digital vs physical CDs?

ETA- Ok I see you edited your post to add that the track list is new for the May release.

  • wordnerdarchie

I have just one more piece of information regarding Adam’s UK album. The people I’ve talked to on the other board didn’t order the CD as talked about above, or download it from from I-Tunes. They saw it in a couple of different music/CD shops in London. The CDs were part of the stores’ regular display, priced the same as all of the rest of the CDs, and were not marked as imports. I guess that’s why they didn’t feel it was an import and there’s all of this confusion about it.

  • Jx223

Danny performed at the Country Music Expo today in Indianapolis . I think that he was the closing act there today. Here is a really short video of him being interviewed today at the Expo:

Probably, but they still would have been imports unless they were the version with the alternate cover and additional songs. It was stated rather early on that the official UK release would have additional songs than the original US version.

  • britlady

    Undercooked

Sorry, haven’t yet figured out how to quote but I’m almost sure there were physical releases in stores too. It’s a long time since I bought an import but if I remember correctly they were adorned with IMPORT stickers and at least twice the price. Hence, I’m sure, why people didn’t think of them as imports.

    Yes it is.

It runs this year from mid July to mid August. I just found out someone I know is showing sheep there this year, as they have for several years past. I don’t know about other places, but in CA, fairs like Del Mar and the OC and LA County fairs run for much longer than a few days. Many of the bigger fairgrounds are open at other times of the year too, for various events including concerts, but according to the conversation I had with BestAI a week or so ago, Lambert’s concert is taking place during the County Fair. (I don’t remember the date. If and when Allison is announced as an opener I will pay more attention. I can see her *and* my friends and it will make having to go to the OC to do it less painful.)

the Anthemic WILL play on Cookie’s second record and that they will hit the studio after the Salt Lake City event.

Woo times two! Although the way things are going, “after SLC” could mean anytime between… when is SLC? July? (ETA: June! Thanks wellhesback.) and the end of the year. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later. That would mean a late Summer/early Fall release I guess? Possibly?

I’m also pleased with the donations to the Race for Hope. That’s a small bit of comfort for David and his family at what has to be a tough time. It’s so cool that Ryan is going to be there — I remember when he first opened for DC & the guys and it was all so new and tentative and who knew if they would get along, etc., and here they are a year later and solid friends. One of my favorite performances of the whole year last year was the acoustic “Breathe” Ryan dedicated to David after Adam died. It was so heartfelt and quite beautiful.

Good luck to tierbee and everyone who’s running!

Review of Carrie’s Columbia, SC concert:

Underwood a big voice and a big show

    Excerpt:

Carrie Underwood doesn’t need a big production to steal the hearts of a crowd.

All she needs is a microphone.

Underwood is a superior singer; her voice has a large range that she uses liberally and to stirring effect.

But, now that the former “American Idol” is a headlining superstar, she also has a big production to back up her vocal talent.

It was evident when Underwood was hovering above the 9,000 fans who attended her Saturday night show at the Colonial Life Arena.

  • fadetowhite

Perhaps they were available for download by you couldn’t get the physical CDs?

Adam and Kris’s CDs have been available for download from I-tunes and for sale via Amazon Uk (as an import) and in HMV retail shops as physical copies (again as imports) since the US release date last November.

A similar thing was true for Cook and Archie last year.

Without any publicity, without a real UK launch and because the viewing numbers for AI on satelllite/cable/digital are tiny, the sales are low.

Cook and Adam did pretty well on itunes, for example, when the download was available (cook got into the low 40s; don’t know exactly how Adam did, but it was pretty good too). But that was purely off interest from the show itself. Without radio/TV media support via a UK release, those numbers aren’t going anywhere.

The moderately successful Idols over here (mainly Kellie and Jordin) have had full on UK releases and singles released to radio after top 40 success in the US. Adam is going down that route now, hence his sales will increase substantially.

But the fans will have bought his album months ago.

  • fadetowhite

I assume you are in the UK. Other posters from the UK are really excited about Adam going on his show. So it’s just difference of opinions.

They can be excited if they want to be :lol

I’d be thrilled if Cook was going on Ross’s show too – I’d be able to see him on my screen in the UK!

I watched the show for the first time in months last week, because Russell Crowe was on, but it wasn’t a great interview (oddly, because he’s been on before and it’s been pretty good).

But I think you misread my post somewhat.

Clearly, J Ross cannot be an EXTREMELY popular chat show with only 2-3 million viewers.

But it is a late night show on BBC1 (the main channel) and it is an established show for people to go on to sell their wares: they have one live music act every week and it’s usually very good.

I wasn’t dissing Adam for going on – it’s a good gig. I was just clarifying the popularity of the show.

And, yes, I am from the UK: therefore I do know something about the show and what works best as a launchpad for musicians on UK TV…and, in this case, I’m not swayed by being a huge fan of the artist concerned: like I say, I’d be thrilled to see David Cook on anything over here and be videoing it like mad, so I understand where the Adam fans and their excitement are coming from.

ETA: a really popular show in the UK will have upwards of 13-15 million viewers for perspective (ie X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent main shows). In a population of 61 million (much less than the US obviously) that’s still pretty low. TV is less watched now than it was in the past. But the perception of Ross is nowhere near as popular in recent years as it was when he started. Even before the Brand incident many thought him absurdly overpaid and his ratings have been slipping for years.

Hey – I like him and find him funny!

I just find it kind of amusing to be told that my perceptions of the popularity of UK personalities and shows is totally wrong by people living in the US who have no conception of popular British culture :lol

  • Trina

That would mean a late Summer/early Fall release I guess? Possibly?

Late summer is pushing it IMO. I’m beginning to think I wasnt far off when I joked about another November release.

My god waiting until June to get into the studio is so completely and utterly stupid I cant even wrap my my mind around it. Why not just wait another another 6 months to release a single and keep him off radio even longer and release the damn CD in January while they’re at it so they can completely kill any momentum? So pissed cranky :(

  • fadetowhite

    Trina:

I can only assume that they’re going for something of a relaunch with Cook mark 2…

Hopefully, the second single will be strong enough and the radio goodwill long enough to give it a good start.

But, ultimately, I’d rather wait for an album that’s been carefully crafted and is the best it can be, than see them rushing to meet deadlines.

I love some songs on DCTR and like the album as a whole, but DCTR2 is critical for Cook’s long term acceptance as a major label artist: I don’t want to see the same kind of scheduling and image compromises as happened with the debut album limiting what they might achieve with it.

If it’s good enough, it will do well.

That’s my (wishful thinking?) belief and I’m sticking with it until launch :lol

Also – isn’t early Autumn a better launch date for a new album in the US? I think that’s what I’ve read from American posters?

  • tierbee

Ooh, 5:30 am is early, lol! And here I am, not a morning person.

Race for Hope does start at 9. Early start needed to get from Northern VA to DC in time to meet team by 8!!!

  • _nyanyanie

oh, goodluck tierbee! and have fun!! fellow dc fans, thanks for the infos… regarding dctr2, patience is a virtue.

i agree… we won’t want him to rush it again just for the sake of promotion purposes such an idol performance..

but fall release, i got mix feelings, it is better? maybe, but is it also too far?? waah.. i don’t know… oh cookie, as long as you feel good already with that record, kindly please share it to us asap… but for now, i’ll wait patiently.

  • Studio57

I can see her *and* my friends and it will make having to go to the OC to do it less painful

Well, according to that link I provided in my post- it runs all year. Most county fairs I have been to last a few days to a week in the middle of the summer and the headliner usually plays the last day. Train is playing like a week or so before Adam. And I have never heard of someone playing two seperate days at a country fair- have you? Yes, it is a country fair, but it is not a traditional one IMHO- don’t most country fairs have free concerts? Maybe they do it different in California shrugs. All I know is people are not buying those tickets to see the sheep, lol.

  • koshka

Its been YEARS since I’ve gone to the OC Fair… I didn’t realize they even brought in live stock. The only live stock I remember at the OC fair was a petting zoo…or maybe that was the livestock area? LOL My memory fails me.

The OC fair is very California. Most of southern california is urban and those attending are not necessarily interested in livestock.

sr4mjc….Hi…not a bad rendition of WWFM. He seems a little winded at the end and the falsetto isn’t that great but all in all a decent imitation. His voice and stage presence seem a thousand times better than the bunch from S9.

I can see this being a standard in almost any singers repertoire. It’s such a beautiful song. Thought I’d be sick of it by now, but after Adam’s Idol performance I like it more and more. And people recognize it now too. The girls squealing at the beginning is cute.

Nice! Didn’t like the background singer though…

  • saga

Didn’t someone say that the OC gigs were part of some summer concert serie they have?

  • Studio57

    Yes, saga I did.

I found this on the web- now this is how a county fair is normally set up. David Cook played this last year. You paid an entrance fee to the fair and anyone could go see David Cook, but if you wanted a “VIP” section with seats, the cost was $25.00. In other towns, the organizer pays for the performer and the concert is free.

    http://www.jsonline.com/entertainment/musicandnightlife/45294552.html

At the Pacific Amphitheatre, the venue is gated off and it is a regular arena in the middle of the fairgrounds. Costs of seats start at $19.50 and go up to $49.50 depending on the seats ( you can see a picture of people in their seats on the bottom):

That place is pretty impressive looking.

Yes, it is a country fair, but it is not a traditional one IMHO- don’t most country fairs have free concerts? Maybe they do it different in California shrugs.

Everything is done differently here in CA(and not necessarily for the better!)
The closest fair to me is the CA state fair in Sac, and the concert series’ tickets are a separate admission price, BUT free to anyone who has payed admission to the fair. So, in other words, only the first section or so is reserved seating. I saw David Cook and band there at last year’s fair, and I was a little miffed that after I had paid for a ticket(45.00) I also had to pay admission to the park and parking when others only paid to get it the park- not their
problem, though, I realize it was my error. Anyway, one good thing, security didn’t allow the people in the GA seating section to turn the stage area into a mosh pit. They kept ropes between the paying section and GA section, which to me was a nice way of saying ” we realize you spent good money for this event, so we’ll do what we can.” I think David was a little confused, though, because he likes all his customers to be on their feet, waving bye-bye chair, etc.
Our little section remained standing the entire time, but many in the front and right side sat down two or so songs into the set.

It’s so cool that Ryan is going to be there — I remember when he first opened for DC & the guys and it was all so new and tentative and who knew if they would get along, etc.,

I can’t see him not getting along with anyone!
Good Luck and Thank You to everyone participating in any form in today’s race.

Where I am (central new york) fairs whether county or state are huge. The New York State Fair is 12 days and has anything for everyone. Much of it free. At the entertainment grandstand so far are booked Rihanna, the fetus with sean kingston, Rush, Rascal Flatts, more to follow. For FREE are Lady Antebellum (must have been booked before their #1..ha), some oldies..blue oyster cult, Kansas, Blues Travelers…with at least 10 more free acts to be listed.

Yes there are “farmers” but the majority of people there are urbanites looking for some greasy food, fun and games and some good music. The only problem I have is the music is outside. When it rains it’s horrible.

WWFM coming up now on VH1 number 7!

Since I brought this up yesterday I will say that obviously what we call a fair here in the Midwest is quite different than tha CA way. Most of ours have acts that come in and if their price was resonable then the show admission was included with the gate price. At one of our local fairs a couple of years ago, they brought in Kellie Pickler @ the cost of $40,000 and felt they had to run a article apologizing that they would have to charge seperately for her show. I will note that there are animals here (rural) and probably less than 100,000 countywide.

For the larger fairs it is not uncommon for the concerts on the big stage to be an extra charge and because these are booked so far ahead for the 7-10 day event there are never addtnl dates added. So what I have gathered from what I read here is that the O.C. fair is not a traditional fair but more of a street fair built around concerts.

That’s so cool; he went back and walked with the others after he finished running. I read a comment under the last pic nhd posted that read: David Cook, you are living your dash. Truer words could not have been written.

  • MollyAnnMay

So what I have gathered from what I read here is that the O.C. fair is not a traditional fair but more of a street fair built around concerts.

LOL! No, it’s not. I don’t know why this is such a difficult concept, but I guess we really do do things differently in CA.

The OC fair has been running every year in the summer for 120 years. Like the Del Mar fair (to which I’ve been many times for both the horse show and the livestock shows *and* the concerts), and the LA County fair in Pomona, It’s a livestock/produce/baked goods/Grandma’s Best Jam fair, just like most US fairs. The big CA fairs extended the length of time they run and added a midway with rides and musical acts as the years have gone by, but they’re still, at heart, county fairs.

The concerts have gotten very popular and have been able to attract big acts in recent years, but they’re still side shows (very big, very popular, very much revenue generating side shows) when the fair itself is on. The bigger fairgrounds are *so* big, of course they use them for other things during the year, including concerts. That’s what the other poster’s link was for.

  • Hazehel

And I have never heard of someone playing two seperate days at a country fair- have you?

Yup. I kinda followed what David Cook was doing on his tour last year and looked at the other acts booked, and yes, some did do two separate dates.
