To Jason Castro fans, this week’s news that the dreadlocked “American Idol” season-seven finalist inked a recording contract with Atlantic Records must have seemed like a return from a long, lonely exile.

But for Rockwall, Texas, native Castro, who just turned 22, the nearly yearlong wait to secure a record deal seemed like no time at all. “I hear it happened pretty quick compared to what it usually takes to get a record deal,” Castro said. “I’m pumped. There’s a big misconception about how fast things move … but since I got off the ‘Idol’ tour, I’ve been writing nonstop and meeting with publishers, and I actually signed a publishing deal ahead of the label one.”

…He’s still figuring out what shape the album will take and what the vibe will be as he experiments with playing with his band, but he’s pretty sure it will be a kind of “modern singer/songwriter” effort that will feature tunes that have a personal meaning for him. “I’ll be telling real stories people can connect with,” he promised, saying he’s aiming for organic songs without a highly produced mechanical studio sheen that can’t be replicated live.

It’s sooo cool that he got his publishing deal before his label deal. I remember how excited Elliott was when he got his publishing deal. At the time some fans did not understand just what a big deal it was. I’m glad that I know now and can be ultra thrilled at Jason’s publishing deal. I’m so excited for him.

This would seem to indicate that the show doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t need Adam to sing in the last three performance slots in order to boost ratings. The ratings take care of themselves. This may indicate that there is another reason the producers keep putting Adam in relatively safe spots. That reason may be pimping.

i think that much had been indicated some weeks ago when people turned off before Adam performed. Some fans like to think everyone wants to see Adam, but if anything the audience is probably waiting for Danny (it’s more plausible…)

ROFL. I laughed at the way you phrased this.

There is no changing Simon. Either he cannot hear the performances — notice how he is always asking Paula what somebody on stage said — or he doesn’t care enough to pay attention. His behavior during Kara’s critique was extremely disrespectful to everyone. The producers need to make him apologize tonight — and not let it turn into a stupid Simon vs. Ryan joke.

Paula is another attention hog — her look-at-me dancing is as rude as Simon’s self-absorption. Randy should make a bigger impact since he knows more about American music than Paula or Simon, but he is little more than “that other judge.” When current or former contestants are asked about their favorite judge or which of the three is most influential, Randy is never mentioned.

I think would the show and the competition would be greatly improved if the panel consisted of a music producer (Todd Rundgren or Linda Perry), a more relevant ex-performer (Mark McGrath), maybe a knowledgeable writer who can think independently (Michael Slezak, Fred Bronson or Dave White), and/or a former Idol (Chris Sligh and Clay Aiken have good senses of humor).

And if the reason why the ratings were higher in the second half is because viewers were “trained” to expect him to sing late, this just demonstrates the folly I pointed out earlier of not having him sing in a variety of performance spots. Why train your viewers to only tune in for a small portion of the end of the show?

Wonder if this will be the quickest 2nd album by any Idol up to now.

Well, considering Justin, Diana, Blake, Kat, Bo, Kristy Lee, Taylor, and others were all dropped before their second album, I should think this is quite a step up.

It’s not the quickest a major artist in general has put out a second album. There were 8 months between Rihanna’s first two albums. Her first album had one really big hit, Pon de Replay, and the album went gold in 2005. Her second album did better in 2006. It spawned three top 10 hits–SOS, Unfaithful and Break It Off, although Break It Off was her 4th single. Her third single off her 2006 album, We Ride, failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (so flops can even come after 2 huge hits). Her third album only came a year and 2 months after her second, even though her second was very successful. That album made her the queen of CHR airplay.

And since we’re talking David/Demi today–Demi will release her second album 10 months after her first, in July.
