Former ‘American Idol’ contestant Matt Giraud to sing national anthem at Michigan spring football game

Matt Giraud — a former contestant on “American Idol” and a 2003 graduate of Lincoln High School — will sing the national anthem Saturday at the University of Michigan spring football game, U-M announced.

A longstanding tradition, the spring game is the final football practice of the season, in which the team plays a full game against itself that is open to the public. The game starts at noon at Michigan Stadium, and admission is free.

‘The X Factor’ auditions in Newark draw thousands of TV show contestant hopefuls

NEWARK — Jade Sterling may be just 13, but she knows what she wants — starting with an audition for “The X Factor,” Simon Cowell’s newest venture into televised talent competitions.

“I want the world to see my talent,” Sterling said Wednesday morning as she and about 10,000 others stood in fame’s path, which looked a lot like cold rain outside the Prudential Center in Newark.

“I’m singing ‘Billionaire’ by Bruno Mars, because it really defines me and who I want to be,” the East Orange teenager said.

‘American Idol’ behind the scenes: ‘Idol’ coaches talk the Top 8 — EXCLUSIVE

HALEY REINHART — “Call Me” (Blondie, American Gigolo)
DB: Haley just learned a huge lesson. She and I just talked about it. You saw a lot of discrepancies this week, in terms of what people were choosing to sing. She admits that it wasn’t her first choice, and she’s feeling stung by it, if I may use that word. And a little stunned. The lesson she learned is that she has to stick to her guns and trust and believe.

The thing that shocked me was that, after she finished singing and the judges made their remarks, I went to her and she said, “Byrd, I knew.” I said, “You knew what?” “I knew I should have changed my song.” I said, “Haley, honey! Well, you learned a lesson.”

‘Idol’ Rejects’ Show Rejects ‘Idol’ Reject

Getting rejected from “American Idol” is bad enough — but to add insult to injury, TMZ has learned, one ex-contestant also got shut down by OTHER “Idol” rejects … after asking to join their reunion concert.

Sources connected with tonight’s Minneapolis reunion show tell TMZ, Dr. Chris Kammer — a giant toothbrush-carrying dentist who was cast off early in the season — contacted the show organizer and fellow reject Caleb Hawley … to see if they needed an MC.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler grants dying man’s wish

Then the word came: Steven Tyler is calling – literally. In a flurry of movement and chatter, a computer was placed in front of Ori and Tyler’s face came into view via a Skype video call.

“Lawrence? This is Steven,” Tyler said. “I’m coming to you from L.A. and I’m so glad to meet you.”

Ori couldn’t respond, but his eyes went wide. His girlfriend Joanie Dziak held his hand and spoke for him. Dziak told Tyler about Ori’s passion for rock music and Aerosmith. She couldn’t even count how many times Ori had seen the band in concert.

Ori passed away that afternoon, with “Dream On” in the background and a smile on his face.

Who’s Covering Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’ on Glee?

Though it’s Wednesday today, how about a little news on “Friday”? The hot rumor of the hour is that Glee’s prom episode will include a cover of Rebecca Black’s infamous YouTube hit “Friday,” and Vulture can confirm that and reveal an opposite-sex twist: The ode to fun, sitting in the back seat, fun, and fun will be sung by Kevin McHale, Chord Overstreet, and Mark Salling.

I don’t get James’ tweet. Journey songs have been performed on Idol before. Clay sang a Journey song; on S8 they did a group number to Don’t Stop Believin…maybe its because of the itunes sales now (they didn’t exist in S2?)…but Journey has let the Glee kids record and sell their tunes. Hmm.

Randy Jackson says the winner of American Idol will be….a boy (NO SH*t)

Actually, he never really comes around and say that a boy will win idol altough I’m so confused with the Randy talk that I could have missed it.

I find it very very strange that Journey won’t clear songs for idol.

  • pattycake

I remember Cook saying he wanted to do Journey ( I believe it was Open Arms) and could not get clearance. I thought Randy was responsible at the time. I guess not.

  • SpenserJ

I suppose it could depend on what songs they’re trying to clear. The band parted ways with Steve Perry a long time ago, and I think there’s really no love lost between the different factions. So, it might actually be dependent on which member of the band has the say so over which songs.

I agree that he didn’t precisely say a boy will win IDOL this year, but he basically is admitting that girls vote for boys, and more girls vote than guys (apparently due to peer pressure from other guys thinking that voting and/or the show is “cheesy”), inferring that a guy will always win IDOL.

I’m actually surprised he admitted this publicly.

OMG, please, no. What is this show coming to?????

  • tinawina

So, in the vocal coach feedback article, they reveal that Call Me was not Haley’s first choice… Jimmy changed her song and she didn’t fight back, even though she was uncomfortable. After the judge’s feedback she revealed that she knew it wasn’t the one she should have done.

If Haley goes home tonight, I am going to be pissed. :( But at least she knows to go with her gut now if she survives.

The show is no better than that song, it only fits.

  • SpenserJ

If Haley goes home tonight, I am going to be pissed.

    Me too :(

Actually, reading the Vocal coach article irritated me a little too. They’re slathering on the praise just like the judges. I’m starting to feel like I’m crazy with all the “he killed it” stuff (when I’m thinking what I just saw was kind of meh).

So, I guess all of those performances were perfect, and no one needs to improve. Except Haley of course. She probably will go home, because everyone got praised to the hilt (with the judges completely ignoring the possibility of any flaws at all), except Haley. Haley received the only real critique – which I would’t mind at all if the others had received the same thing.

  • tinawina

I’m still on the fence with Haley but this is exactly how I felt. Everyone else got a pass except her? I was so mad. I voted like a banshee for her, and for Casey – I don’t want him to go home after standing up for himself, Jimmy’s little “he better take the help” thing pissed me off. Is it really so bad that the jazz guy wants to sing Jazz? I threw some votes Lauren’s way as well.

  • leome

That was my problem too. Especially when the word Karaoke was used for her and not for others. I would be ok with it, if the judges wouldn’t have used every superlative possible for all the other contestants but her. And I think this season is great but the judges have stopped judging and just want to make it sound like these are the best contestants ever. Instead of helping the contestants, they’re just trying to look good in the picture.

  • Trina

Wow I’m not the biggest Haley fan but I’ll be pissed too if she goes home now. Changing your song for your own reasons or just making a bad choice is one thing, but when its because that jackass changed it? Ugh. If she survives hopefully she’ll learn to trust her instincts.

The ratings will come close to last week, probably a little lower.

    A 90-minute edition of American Idol earned its blockbuster stripes with a 14.8 rating/23 share in the overnights from 8-9:30 p.m., building by half-hour as follows: 13.9/22 — 15.0/23 — 15.6/23.

    Last week:

A 90-minute edition of blockbuster American Idol scored a 15.1 rating/24 share from 8-9:30 p.m., building by half-hour as follows:

    American Idol (Fox)
    8:00 p.m.: 14.2/23 (#1)
    8:30 p.m.: 15.3/24 (#1)
    9:00 p.m.: 15.8/24 (#1)

  • desiree_chick

    From the EW article:

I said, “What are you choosing for next week?” She said, “No.” And I said, “Start thinking of your song for next week right now! Because it’s going to start all over again.

That just broke my heart when Haley said “No.” Come on girl, don’t give up. I think it may not be her going home, at least hopefully. I really don’t care that much for the remaining girls, nor even care if they both go home next two weeks (there were better girls in the top 24, IMO) but really, it would be sad an error costs her since she had three weeks of improved performances. Funny, ’cause I like the boys better, but I feel the girls can create a better moment than them.

  • Elliegrll

If Haley goes home tonight, I am going to be pissed. But at least she knows to go with her gut now if she survives.

Even though she came into the night with more momentum than anyone else, she’s also the one who has fallen for the age old idol obstacle of trying to please everyone, and not singing songs that she’s passionate about. It wasn’t just last night, a few weeks ago she performed a song just because the judges said that she reminds them of the singer. And several times she’s picked songs that are in the same vein. I’m sure that she sang before coming on idol, so it’s really not a case where she doesn’t know who she is, and it’s more like she just doesn’t have the confidence to show us who she is as an artist.

  • Margaux

Is anyone else following the “Idol Rejects” mini-tour?
I’ll check the headlines for past few days, but Caleb told a TV station in Minnesota that he’d like to organize a tour to play the cities where the Idol show appears — reminding me of the “shadow tour” Taylor Hicks’ band did during Season 5, when Taylor and other tour members made some memorable after-hours performances.

I don’t have any love for Iovine, and don’t have a problem with the contestants standing up for themselves, but I still didn’t like Casey’s take on “Nature Boy”.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that there is more involved with clearing a song for a television performance vs. recording it for sale on iTunes? Perhaps that’s why Clay was able to sing “Open Arms” (no single mp3 releases back then), but Cook wasn’t.

Yeah, good point. She probably didn’t start this with a clear sense of artistic direction.

Maybe she’ll start finding her way now. She has a really interesting voice, but I feel like I’ve only see it all come together for her in flashes.

New pics of Cookie on Twitter. http://twitpic.com/4kq36a

    Nice picture!

Has everyone forgotten Corey Clark’s breathtaking rendition of Journey’s “Foolish Heart”? It’s on YouTube. I dare you.

New Cookie picture is verrry nice. He does have his moments.

I hope Haley survives “Call Me.” The studio recording is actually pretty good, and she did not deserve to be singled out as karaoke in a season where at least 90% of the performances have been karaoke.

  • Niall

I have a feeling Haley will be safe. As the only contestant getting criticism for the song choice, her fans were probably scared for her. I appreciated Casey for sticking to his guns but the result wasn’t that good. For better or worse they should sing whatever fits them best. At least then, if they go down in flames, they do it without a bunch of regrets.

  • sma11ie

When did David say he couldn’t get Open Arms cleared? I am shocked I don’t remember this.

Yeah. Nice picture. If you want to scare the crap out of yourself and look at the GINORMOUS HQ version of it, there’s one here: http://twitpic.com/4kquj7/full

Warning, it will seriously scare the crap out of you, it’s that big. But once the shock wears off you may find yourself somewhat mesmerized by the textures of David’s hair, of his suit jacket, etc ;). I swear I haven’t been staring at his hair looking for bald spots =P… hee.

  • pattycake

When did David say he couldn’t get Open Arms cleared? I am shocked I don’t remember this.

It was a radio interview. He said he changed song choice twice because of clearance issues. One was Journey and one was Dire Straits. It stuck with me because I would have loved Faithfully. But that wasn’t the song he was selecting. I hate Dire Straits, so I recall thanking God for that switch.

  • sma11ie

Oh, cool, something new to me. Which week was it?

  • calimari

Reading the article from the vocal coach – Jacob had a hard time connecting or “feeling” Bridge Over Troubled Waters? Who on earth cannot connect to that song? The lyrics are beautiful – they are direct – the song has such solid meaning, but he struggled to feel the song? That’s weird to me.

  • windmills

pattycake: It stuck with me because I would have loved Faithfully.

Didn’t Kristy Lee Cook sing Faithfully the same season?

EDIT: Sorry I missed where you said Cook would’ve sung something else. I see that Steve Perry didn’t cowrite Faithfully so maybe that’s why that cleared.

    http://xfactor.tellymix.co.uk/2010/judges/2796-journey-axed-dont-stop-believin-cover-for-joe.html

This might be why DSB was a group song in S8 and not a single for purchase.

They made a mint off the Glee version though and it’s on the Rock of Ages cast recording.

  • pattycake

Oh, cool, something new to me. Which week was it?

Foggy, but one of them was top 2, he said originally going to do Collective Soul in top 2 but wasn’t happy with arrangement, the Dire Straits one he wasn’t specific but said he wanted to do it nearly all season but could not fit into a theme week and then could not get clearance when it did. Mentioned desire to do Dire Straits song b/c it was a fav of his brother. :(

  • gangreen29

First estimations are always a bit high, so if they are saying around 10,000 people at X Factor auditions I bet they are in reality close to the Miami auditioner levels of 7,000. For having that huge $5 Million dollar prize and allowing everyone over the age of 12 to audition I have been surprised at how low the audition numbers have been. They are without a doubt going to have half the number of people trying out that a season of idol has, and if the numbers don’t pick up in subsequent cities they might be at a third of what an idol season is. Add in to the fact that every group member is counting towards the audition tally, the number of acts drops even more. I’ve decided I want X Factor to do well though, so I hope Simon throws some ringers into the mix to guarantee some talent.

It’s a simple song meant to be sung simply, IMO. That’s where its real beauty lies. Jacob went magnum diva all over it. I’m starting to doubt that he even knows how to sing simply. That’s a shame because he basically has a very nice voice.

  • LaRue

Enjoy the ride, pimp boy. You won’t even see the bus coming when they finally send it. Metal will not be making a comeback.

two seasons in a row Kirsten and I share a brain. It’s weird. :)

I wonder when the bus will start beeping. Do they want him in the finale? If they do, is UMG prepared to make that metal album if he wins? If not, why chance it, start the bus soon. I had thought they’d try and give the girls a little help last night, pimp spot for either one of them. Nope. Who do they want to win? I can’t really figure it out just now, but everything points to James this week. The don’t really seem into Scotty, even if he is getting the most votes.

Or they don’t care and they push the hell out of Pia as quickly as they can.

ETA: Whoever Interscope or UMG wants doesn’t seem to be shared with the judges. They lurve everyone.

  • CindyM

Wonder if he’s been getting backlash on Twitter because of all the bells and whistles the producers are giving him?

  • glamertitis

I’m impressed how James is doing on this show. He seems to be the only one who is taking the competition part of this “reality” show and trying to make a go of it. It certainly paid off for him last night. And to ask for and get someone with serious rock cred to come and play guitar with you is genious in my opinion.

    Ditto!!
That James dude needs to get over himself…he’s not all that!!

James is just a karaoke rehash of any 80′s metal band. He brings no creativity or originality to any of his performances. He stands out because this bunch is so mediocre. Take away all the glitz and you have nothing. I can’t wait for the bus to come his way.

  • sr4mjc

It can only help this tired show when the contestants try to do something more unique than another average karaoke ballad.

But how is doing a karaoke version of metal any different? Because he got a cool guitarist, which was the best part of the performance? Karaoke is karaoke. Yeah, I’m looking at Scotty too on this.

Damn, ballads get a rough time. Even on radio.

  • SpenserJ

Yeah, I’m looking at Scotty too on this.

I thought Scotty was seriously boring last night. It may be because I’m not all that familiar with country music (especially the classic variety that Scotty seems to prefer), but I feel like he’s just been singing the same song for weeks. Where’s the nuance?

It could be just because he’s so young, and needs time to develop his skills. But, I’m just not on board with the theory that Howdie Doodie is going to take Nashville by storm and sell millions of cd’s.

  • BootStar

I don’t care if Durbin personally asked for Zakk Wylde—that is just WAY unfair. Ask for lighting, ask for props, ask for flaming pianos, fine. But, a duet with a legend guitarist on top 8 night? Enjoy it, I guess

Well, I can’t fault the kid for asking, but I cannot believe all these instrumental solos BY ACCOMPANISTS this season during actual performances. Last season TPTB shit all over Casey James whenever he dared to play more than bar chords on his own guitar. At least Casey played the damn thing himself!

And James isn’t the only one this season either. Paul was playing rhythm guitar one week while the house guitarist did a little solo.

And don’t even get me started on the new Randy Jackson, who’s all about “being true to yourself” as “an artist.” Where the hell was THAT guy last season?

  • sr4mjc

And don’t even get me started on the new Randy Jackson, who’s all about “being true to yourself” as “an artist.” Where the hell was THAT guy last season?

Haha, and he shit all over Pop last night too. I thought this was the year to find the new female Bieber?

  • tinawina

I thought Scotty was seriously boring last night. It may be because I’m not all that familiar with country music (especially the classic variety that Scotty seems to prefer), but I feel like he’s just been singing the same song for weeks. Where’s the nuance?

Exactly. I like Scotty and I love his voice, but I don’t think he’s doing anything to win over the non-converted at this point. If you are not into him, you’re more likely to think he’s been singing the same song the whole time (with one slight detour into rockabilly last week). As people get voted off and the audience starts shopping for new favorites, he is setting himself up to lose, probably to James. He is the only person I wish had listened to Jimmy Iovine last night.

If he doesn’t find a way not to sing a slow country song next week, he’s putting himself in danger of blowing it IMO.

  • gangreen29

I thought this was the year to find the new female Bieber?

That was nothing but weird fan speculation. Just like last year was supposed to be the “year of taylor swift” Paranoia does funny things to people.

  • SpenserJ

Seriously, I am mystified by the guy sitting in Randy’s chair. He’s sure got a whole new way of thinking. And oddly, he’s a little more articulate than Randy 1.0. Was there a head injury involved?

He is the only person I wish had listened to Jimmy Iovine last night.

I too think that not doing the other song was a mistake. I’m hoping next week, if she remains, Haley will muster up the courage to not listen to Iovine too :).

Who’s paranoid? I’m certainly not looking over my shoulder, lol. I seem to remember articles about Idol lowering the audition age specifically to find the new hot kids that need representation, like the Biebers and the Swifties.

Articles like this were all over the place when they lowered the audition age to 15. Just because they didn’t find a Bieber or Selena, doesn’t mean they weren’t looking for one :)

The idea that last year was suposed to be the year of the “new Taylor Swift” was a lot more than “weird fan speculation.” TPTB cast a large number of singer-songwriters, with guitars, mainly female, though some of them left before the top 12. That was the season that Randy announced that a girl would win (heh). Katie Stevens was considered a frontrunner in the beginning, and Simon kept pushing her to sing country, when she wanted to sing pop. She got so much criticism from the judges that she lost confidence. She’s one who might have done better this year, when the judges are cheerleaders (except for my girl Haley) and everybody is the “best talent ever.”

Seems still like nothing but fan speculation to me lol. Because Lilly Scott and Crystal are so similar to Taylor Swift, right?

Well, I can’t fault the kid for asking, but I cannot believe all these instrumental solos BY ACCOMPANISTS this season during actual performances. Last season TPTB shit all over Casey James whenever he dared to play more than bar chords on his own guitar. At least Casey played the damn thing himself!

Crystal got the didgeridoo and Lee got the bagpipes.

Of course not, but but the fact they lowered the age means they were looking for a young hot next ‘it’ kid. The casting is based on who showed up at the auditions, haha. Had they found someone they thought were like Selena and Bieber, they would have cast him or her.

Personally I wished they would have raised the age to 18, but that would have completely ruled out any potential Biebers and they weren’t willing to risk missing that boat.

was I supposed to laugh at that? Cause that was really funny, lol.

Honestly, I think they saw white girls with a guitar and said close enough! LOL

Haha! I think TPTB are being very tricky and suddenly Lauren is going to perk up and win at the end! Watch it happen!!!

    Ok, this is really funny.

10 Things The ‘American Idol’ Judges Might As Well Be Judging Instead

Kinda, but the serious point was that season 9 contestants could also ask for accompanists.

Crystal got the didgeridoo and Lee got the bagpipes.

Yes, I know, but I don’t recall either of those instrumentalists having extended solos during those performances. I could be wrong though.

Danny Gokey performs at the North Star Casino, in Bowler, WI

mj, if no one else mentioned I believe that casino show for Danny is May 14th, today was the first day for the tickets going on sale. (From what I’m hearing, it sold out right away.)

Danny seems to have been in Nashville today, doing more interviews. Nice that he is starting to come back into view after almost two months mostly out of the public scene.
