Former ‘American Idol’ contestant Matt Giraud to sing national anthem at Michigan spring football game

Matt Giraud — a former contestant on “American Idol” and a 2003 graduate of Lincoln High School — will sing the national anthem Saturday at the University of Michigan spring football game, U-M announced.

A longstanding tradition, the spring game is the final football practice of the season, in which the team plays a full game against itself that is open to the public. The game starts at noon at Michigan Stadium, and admission is free.

‘The X Factor’ auditions in Newark draw thousands of TV show contestant hopefuls

NEWARK — Jade Sterling may be just 13, but she knows what she wants — starting with an audition for “The X Factor,” Simon Cowell’s newest venture into televised talent competitions.

“I want the world to see my talent,” Sterling said Wednesday morning as she and about 10,000 others stood in fame’s path, which looked a lot like cold rain outside the Prudential Center in Newark.

“I’m singing ‘Billionaire’ by Bruno Mars, because it really defines me and who I want to be,” the East Orange teenager said.

‘American Idol’ behind the scenes: ‘Idol’ coaches talk the Top 8 — EXCLUSIVE

HALEY REINHART — “Call Me” (Blondie, American Gigolo)
DB: Haley just learned a huge lesson. She and I just talked about it. You saw a lot of discrepancies this week, in terms of what people were choosing to sing. She admits that it wasn’t her first choice, and she’s feeling stung by it, if I may use that word. And a little stunned. The lesson she learned is that she has to stick to her guns and trust and believe.

The thing that shocked me was that, after she finished singing and the judges made their remarks, I went to her and she said, “Byrd, I knew.” I said, “You knew what?” “I knew I should have changed my song.” I said, “Haley, honey! Well, you learned a lesson.”

‘Idol’ Rejects’ Show Rejects ‘Idol’ Reject

Getting rejected from “American Idol” is bad enough — but to add insult to injury, TMZ has learned, one ex-contestant also got shut down by OTHER “Idol” rejects … after asking to join their reunion concert.

Sources connected with tonight’s Minneapolis reunion show tell TMZ, Dr. Chris Kammer — a giant toothbrush-carrying dentist who was cast off early in the season — contacted the show organizer and fellow reject Caleb Hawley … to see if they needed an MC.

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler grants dying man’s wish

Then the word came: Steven Tyler is calling – literally. In a flurry of movement and chatter, a computer was placed in front of Ori and Tyler’s face came into view via a Skype video call.

“Lawrence? This is Steven,” Tyler said. “I’m coming to you from L.A. and I’m so glad to meet you.”

Ori couldn’t respond, but his eyes went wide. His girlfriend Joanie Dziak held his hand and spoke for him. Dziak told Tyler about Ori’s passion for rock music and Aerosmith. She couldn’t even count how many times Ori had seen the band in concert.

Ori passed away that afternoon, with “Dream On” in the background and a smile on his face.

Wonder if he’s been getting backlash on Twitter because of all the bells and whistles the producers are giving him?

I’m impressed how James is doing on this show. He seems to be the only one who is taking the competition part of this “reality” show and trying to make a go of it. It certainly paid off for him last night. And to ask for and get someone with serious rock cred to come and play guitar with you is genious in my opinion.
It can only help this tired show when the contestants try to do something more unique than another average karaoke ballad.

It probably depends which songs Steve has the most writing credit on. Or he knows James will ruin it, LOL. Thank you Steve Perry!

    Ditto!!
That James dude needs to get over himself…he’s not all that!!

  • Fullmoon

Or they don’t care and they push the hell out of Pia as quickly as they can.

ETA: Whoever Interscope or UMG wants doesn’t seem to be shared with the judges. They lurve everyone.

That’s what I’m thinking. They want Pia and she has the most potential besides Scotty/Lauren. I”m not a huge fan of Haley but her studio recordings are really good.

    Ditto!!
That James dude needs to get over himself…he’s not all that!!

James is just a karaoke rehash of any 80′s metal band. He brings no creativity or originality to any of his performances. He stands out because this bunch is so mediocre. Take away all the glitz and you have nothing. I can’t wait for the bus to come his way.

  • sr4mjc

It can only help this tired show when the contestants try to do something more unique than another average karaoke ballad.

But how is doing a karaoke version of metal any different? Because he got a cool guitarist, which was the best part of the performance? Karaoke is karaoke. Yeah, I’m looking at Scotty too on this.

Damn, ballads get a rough time. Even on radio.

  • SpenserJ

Yeah, I’m looking at Scotty too on this.

I thought Scotty was seriously boring last night. It may be because I’m not all that familiar with country music (especially the classic variety that Scotty seems to prefer), but I feel like he’s just been singing the same song for weeks. Where’s the nuance?

It could be just because he’s so young, and needs time to develop his skills. But, I’m just not on board with the theory that Howdie Doodie is going to take Nashville by storm and sell millions of cd’s.

  • BootStar

I don’t care if Durbin personally asked for Zakk Wylde—that is just WAY unfair. Ask for lighting, ask for props, ask for flaming pianos, fine. But, a duet with a legend guitarist on top 8 night? Enjoy it, I guess

Well, I can’t fault the kid for asking, but I cannot believe all these instrumental solos BY ACCOMPANISTS this season during actual performances. Last season TPTB shit all over Casey James whenever he dared to play more than bar chords on his own guitar. At least Casey played the damn thing himself!

And James isn’t the only one this season either. Paul was playing rhythm guitar one week while the house guitarist did a little solo.

And don’t even get me started on the new Randy Jackson, who’s all about “being true to yourself” as “an artist.” Where the hell was THAT guy last season?

  • sr4mjc

And don’t even get me started on the new Randy Jackson, who’s all about “being true to yourself” as “an artist.” Where the hell was THAT guy last season?

Haha, and he shit all over Pop last night too. I thought this was the year to find the new female Bieber?

  • tinawina

Exactly. I like Scotty and I love his voice, but I don’t think he’s doing anything to win over the non-converted at this point. If you are not into him, you’re more likely to think he’s been singing the same song the whole time (with one slight detour into rockabilly last week). As people get voted off and the audience starts shopping for new favorites, he is setting himself up to lose, probably to James. He is the only person I wish had listened to Jimmy Iovine last night.

If he doesn’t find a way not to sing a slow country song next week, he’s putting himself in danger of blowing it IMO.

  • gangreen29

I thought this was the year to find the new female Bieber?

That was nothing but weird fan speculation. Just like last year was supposed to be the “year of taylor swift” Paranoia does funny things to people.

  • SpenserJ

And don’t even get me started on the new Randy Jackson, who’s all about “being true to yourself” as “an artist.” Where the hell was THAT guy last season?

Seriously, I am mystified by the guy sitting in Randy’s chair. He’s sure got a whole new way of thinking. And oddly, he’s a little more articulate than Randy 1.0. Was there a head injury involved?

He is the only person I wish had listened to Jimmy Iovine last night.

I too think that not doing the other song was a mistake. I’m hoping next week, if she remains, Haley will muster up the courage to not listen to Iovine too :).

Kinda funny to hear Archie on a hip-hop station lol. Hope we get some vids from this game!

  • fadetowhite

OK – I’m weird, because having just listened to last night’s Idol, I liked Haley and Jacob quite a bit, where others haven’t. But it was a pretty strong night all round. Not sure who’s going home…

  • sr4mjc

That was nothing but weird fan speculation. Just like last year was supposed to be the “year of taylor swift” Paranoia does funny things to people.

Who’s paranoid? I’m certainly not looking over my shoulder, lol. I seem to remember articles about Idol lowering the audition age specifically to find the new hot kids that need representation, like the Biebers and the Swifties.

Articles like this were all over the place when they lowered the audition age to 15. Just because they didn’t find a Bieber or Selena, doesn’t mean they weren’t looking for one :)

The idea that last year was suposed to be the year of the “new Taylor Swift” was a lot more than “weird fan speculation.” TPTB cast a large number of singer-songwriters, with guitars, mainly female, though some of them left before the top 12. That was the season that Randy announced that a girl would win (heh). Katie Stevens was considered a frontrunner in the beginning, and Simon kept pushing her to sing country, when she wanted to sing pop. She got so much criticism from the judges that she lost confidence. She’s one who might have done better this year, when the judges are cheerleaders (except for my girl Haley) and everybody is the “best talent ever.”

Seems still like nothing but fan speculation to me lol. Because Lilly Scott and Crystal are so similar to Taylor Swift, right?

Of course not, but but the fact they lowered the age means they were looking for a young hot next ‘it’ kid. The casting is based on who showed up at the auditions, haha. Had they found someone they thought were like Selena and Bieber, they would have cast him or her.

Personally I wished they would have raised the age to 18, but that would have completely ruled out any potential Biebers and they weren’t willing to risk missing that boat.

  • sr4mjc

Crystal got the didgeridoo and Lee got the bagpipes.

was I supposed to laugh at that? Cause that was really funny, lol.

Because Lilly Scott and Crystal are so similar to Taylor Swift, right?

Honestly, I think they saw white girls with a guitar and said close enough! LOL

  • HotHotHot

Haha! I think TPTB are being very tricky and suddenly Lauren is going to perk up and win at the end! Watch it happen!!!

    Ok, this is really funny.

Kinda, but the serious point was that season 9 contestants could also ask for accompanists.

Crystal got the didgeridoo and Lee got the bagpipes.

Yes, I know, but I don’t recall either of those instrumentalists having extended solos during those performances. I could be wrong though.

Danny Gokey performs at the North Star Casino, in Bowler, WI

mj, if no one else mentioned I believe that casino show for Danny is May 14th, today was the first day for the tickets going on sale. (From what I’m hearing, it sold out right away.)

Danny seems to have been in Nashville today, doing more interviews. Nice that he is starting to come back into view after almost two months mostly out of the public scene.
