Idol Headlines for 04/13/12 – Evening Edition

Ryan Seacrest to Host FOX’s ’25th Anniversary Special’ – Host of American Idol, national radio personality and television producer Ryan Seacrest will serve as the host of FOX’s 25TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL, airing Sunday, April 22 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). “Who better than Ryan Seacrest – America’s best television host and 11-year member of our FOX family – to lead our 25th anniversary celebration,” said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “This is going to be an amazing trip down memory lane filled with plenty of surprises that will showcase our hits, our misses and everything in between.” – Read more at Zap2it

‘American Idol’ Voters ‘Were Wrong’ On Jessica Sanchez, Steven Tyler Says – So what went wrong? “Well, I think [America] thought she was safe,” explained Jackson, who stopped by backstage to speak on Sanchez’s behalf. “I think they thought she was safe, I’m sure, and I think they thought Joshua was safe because those two alone, with Colton and some of the others, have been the most consistent. So, you know, yeah, I think they just forgot.” Probably the most inconsistent of the final seven who was a sure bet to be the one sent packing last night was Hollie Cavanagh. Despite her strong vocals, her nerves and stiff stage presence have led the little English southern belle to the bottom three for weeks now. But after her less-than-perfect performance of “Perfect” Wednesday night, she dodged the bullet completely this time around thanks to her devoted fans. – See the Video at MTV

Idol Hangover’ Hot Topics: Jessica Sanchez’s Save, Dixon-Durbin Hair Wars, Steven Tyler’s Out There Style – On this week’s episode of Idol Hangover, THR music editor Shirley Halperin and special correspondent Didi Benami run down five hot topics to emerge from the Top 7 show. Among them: Jessica Sanchez’s surprising elimination and subsequent save, Steven Tyler’s out there style choices and why Hollie Cavanagh is constantly being bullied by the judges. – See the video at The Hollywood Reporter

Carrie Underwood Is Dreading Mike Fisher’s ‘Playoff Beard’ – Carrie Underwood is very excited that husband Mike Fisher’s hockey team is in the NHL playoffs, but she’s not quite as enthused about the rituals that come along with the games. “I’m not looking forward to the playoff beard,” she joked to PEOPLE while promoting Olay’s new “Beauty by Example” campaign in New York on Thursday. “[The players] all grow out their facial hair during the playoffs.” – Read more at People

Simon Cowell calls into the Ryan Seacrest Show

Hijinks ensue.

Rachel Crow settles into Nickelodeon gig – “Tired is not really in my vocabulary anymore,” said Rachel Crow. On a recent weekday, the Colorado native is seated in a chair inside the Nickelodeon offices in Santa Monica, her feet barely touching the floor. She’s every bit the bubbly personality that she exuded during her “X Factor” debut as she speaks with aplomb about her new endeavors. She’s almost a little too poised (as you may surmise from her answers) for her age, now 14. “It’s amazing to think that a small town girl like me can find themselves on Nickelodeon,” she said. – Read more at the LA Times

The Hit Fix interview with Kris was the best he has given regarding TVOL. He is so articulate and just lights up with enthusiasm. It is a pleasure to have a thoughtful, knowledgeable interviewer.

  • iFoundIt

I’m with the camp that Hollie didn’t deserve being thrown under the bus week after week to make Jessica look good. Out of the 2 of them Hollie actually has a more accessible personality. The nerves does get the best of her, but that’s also the thing that makes her more relatable.

  • Anonymous

the judges annoy me.. I understand everyone has their favorites but when your a judge you should never show your cards so blatantly…

I was hoping this bottom 3 with jess and josh would make them learn their lesson and get them to wise up but sadly it appears to have done the opposite… lol.

  • Bobbi

I wonder if the judges or producers have even considered the thought that just possibly the American public aren’t as enthralled with Jessica as they are? She has a very nice voice but she bores me to tears! I know there are plenty of other people out there that feel the same way. To make matters worse, she sang a song that was certainly not well known and went fairly early in the show. Her bottom three appearance makes sense to me!

Of course, we hadn’t been given our instructions, before last night, of who we were supposed to be voting for. I’m sure the American public won’t let the judges down next week.

  • Anonymous

I miss Simon and Ryan together on Idol. Fun times. That interview was so much fun.

  • halo9125

I actually went back and watched Jessica’s performance of “Stuttering”. If Simon were still a judge, I can hear him yelling “self-indulgent”. Everything about it- her hand movements, facial expressions, the closed eyes, the strained appearance- totally distracted me from the vocal. I doubt that I’m the only one who felt this way.

  • too-cool-for-school

I’m tired of the judges giving their blanket “The voters got it wrong.” statement each and every week.

Jessica and Joshua should not have been in the B3, I agree. But these are the judges who are always telling us to vote for our favorites. People do that and every week we get it so terribly “wrong”? How does that work?

  • Indigobunting

Hollie wasn’t thrown under the bus to make Jessica “look good”. Jessica doesn’t even need hollie to look good, she does it on her own by giving amazing performances week after week. Hollie has gotten deserved criticism because she’s a soulless performer. Hollie isn’t even in the same league as Jessica.

Personality wise, hollie is outgoing and Jessica is more of an introvert. Jessica is not cold, calculating, mean, or whatever everyone has said about her over the last 24 hrs, she’s just shy and reserved, plain and simple. She’s not gonna change who she is and become bubbly and talkative just to gain votes.

  • justmefornow

For any James fans that haven’t seen the Viper Room performance after Idol last night, there are a bunch of videos up on YouTube now.

James in his true element, very “Un-Idol” like is wonderful to see.
Good luck on the tour! Hope to make a show near me.

    Here’s a taste……

Her performance of “stuttering” was one of her best. I believed every word she sang. She connected with the song and it showed because she displayed a lot of emotion, and her vocals were perfect.

Now people are complaining about her facial expressions and her eyes being closed. I find that a little ridiculous.

  • kesia monteith

I really hate them doing that, because it is only making things worse for Jessica, not better. The more they say America was wrong, the angrier the detractors get. Randy, Steven and Jennifer, you did the “save”, good for you, it was the right thing, now go back and do your job of actually judging the contestants properly.

    Just please….Shut Up!.

  • Lexie

Scotty is performing at his soldout show at the Azalea Festival in Wilmington, NC right now…had a forty car motorcade?

  • Lexie

Scotty tweeted a teaser about Lauren’s haircut earlier today, the McLainers are loving it:))  She joined the shdc club:)

  • kesia monteith

I’m feeling sad about The Save now, because it seems like it only opened a whole can of worms. Every damn thing about Jessica is being criticized more than when she was safe.

  • BonnieDee

I posted a better pic than I had up originally.  This was tweeted from Lauren’s Aunt Kim.!/fancyfreemom/status/190967077807472640/photo/1 Yes I saw Scotty’s post about the hair.  LOL.

  • MissMyEm

“Well, I think [America] thought she was safe,” explained Jackson, who
stopped by backstage to speak on Sanchez’s behalf. “I think they thought
she was safe, I’m sure, and I think they thought Joshua was safe
because those two alone, with Colton and some of the others, have been
    the most consistent.

Randy, Randy, Randy.  I think the funniest excuse the judges, the producers and the media make (although I think they are force fed) is that people feel that so and so would be safe and therefore didn’t vote for said person.

I have watched Idol since Season 1 and I vote for whom I want and when I want and how many times I want.  Granted I have not voted every season but that was because no one caught my eye, not because I felt someone would be safe.

People vote for whom they want.  While I think both Jessica and Holly have good voices, there may be something missing.   I do however think the fault lies with Jimmy Iovine who compared Holly poorly against Jessica.   I don’t think anyone takes him seriously.  Not even some of the singers.    Actually I would have put Phillip in the bottom, but I suppose he’s may have the female vote.

  • Enough already!

Once again the focus is on the judges and not the contestants.  Ryan stating that there was a shocker coming,  Tyler’s outfit, Randy saying the voting public got it wrong, and Jlo leaping on the stage and taking the microphone (not sure how this all happened missed the show and reading recaps).  I guess they feel they have to do something besides sit in their chairs each week and critique the performances to earn their huge salaries.   Sounds like the most exciting event is the hair off between James and Colton…sorry no winners either way!

  • raya

I like Lauren’s hair shorter like that.  It lightens her up.  Though in that one picture she looks so much like Candace Cameron.

  • too-cool-for-school

Very true! Everything they do is totally counterproductive and they honestly are too stupid to realize that. Good contestants are suffering because of it.

Nigel needs to have a team meeting with his puppets! Maybe their four small brains together can account for one logical mind that realizes and fixes some of these problems!

  • Anonymous

I don’t think detractors are the only ones who gonna be angry ,i’m not one and i mad with this judges behavior and i can’t imagine whats  Hollie (who actually has a great voice  , but need more sincere advise to progress on her stage presence ) is feeling right now :/,  i mean seriously the judges are trying too much and basically saying Hollie need to be eliminated already . i mean  is.just too.much :| Jessica is a very good singer and Joshua too, in terms of vocals the’re maybe  the best,  i totally can picture this two in the final, but to pretend to instruct the viewers about for who they should vote and who we should like,  is a little extreme and extremely WRONG ….. for real !

  • too-cool-for-school

Ryan/Simon interview is fun. It kinda makes me miss him. Kinda! ;)

  • Anonymous

Hollie’s problems have nothing to do with Jessica.  She reached the bottom three before Jimmy Iovine decided to compare her to Jessica.  Before that, nobody tried to bus her, or use her to make Jessica look good.

  • too-cool-for-school

Agreed. For how much money they make, they really oughta keep the focus on the contestants. I’m starting to feel somewhat embarrassed for them. The way they are acting is unseemly.

  • Anonymous

I doubt Simon would have said anything negative. Remember, he praised Lee every week, along with Rachel Crow and Melanie Amaro(2 similar girls to Jessica)

“What is David Archuleta up to at the Missionary Training Center? His elders and sisters tell all”

Kind of a sensational title with the “tell all” lol but interesting to read a bit about what kind of experience David is having at the MTC. I’m thinking it might have been a better idea to send him to the MTC in Chile so it would be less crazy for him but I hear he might possibly be heading there next week anyway.

What I learned from this article: David is short, humble and wears tight pants. hahahahaha love it.

Lauren looks absolutely gorgeous! I absolutely love this look on her. It reminds me of a haircut Kellie got at one point, it was a sharp, sleek, smart, and sophisticated look for her too. But I can’t even begin to express how much I love this hairstyle on Lauren. A+ This makes me unreasonably happy for Lauren and I’m not one who usually cares too much about how these Idols look.

More tweets about Carrie’s album from people who are hearing it. Apparently she’s scheduled to do country media interviews Monday in Nashville too because Hunter Kelly and Becca Walls have both said they’ll chat with her Monday.

More from Becca Walls for The Country Vibe. She answered some fan questions.!/NashvilleBecca

Is it mainly an uptempo album?!” Yes I would say mostly. A lot of varying styles, definitely a journey

Thoughts on “Two Black Cadillacs” ?” 1st thought, WHOA. 2nd thought, dark, haunting & I must know what inspired it

See You Again is a good one. I liked One Way Ticket bcuz it’s different. Really liked Leave Love Alone and Good In Goodbye.

would you be willing to concur that this is her best album yet?” I would say so. A definite evolution.

I wrote in my notes that Nobody Ever Told You was bouncy with a Paul Simon-ish vibe. Sweet message.

And this is from Norro Wilson, who also answered some fan questions. He’s not crazy about Good Girl but, he usually likes Carrie’s music.!/imakehits2

Was able to listen to the Carrie Underwood CD, The Title Track slays me. It has a Wow factor.

    About Cupid’s Got A Shotgun:

I love it. It’s a fun type song.

It’s her Best overall IMO. The songwriting is outstanding. The Production is fabulous.

My favs are BA, 2BC, LLA, OWT, Cupid and WAW in that order

BA=Blown Away, 2BC=Two Black Cadillacs, LLA=Leave Love Alone, OWT=One Way Ticket, and WAW=Wine After Whiskey

A fan asked him about Thank God For Hometowns

I like it. Not a bad song on there. There isn’t one song I would skip over. Some are better than others but all very good.

    About Nobody Ever Told You

It wasn’t a stand out for me personally but it had a cool uplifting vibe.

The judges want Jessica to be an over-night sensation because it would give credence to their constant back-patting that this is the “BEST SEASON EVER”.  So now their favorite got voted out and they take it personal.  Ugh!  They are so predictable.  I’m having a hard time getting excited over any of them this year.

  • BonnieDee

I think everyone, including fans, judges, and TPTB at Idol realize now that Season 10 was way more popular.  That’s why they are trying to create a nonexistent Skylar/Colton pairing cause they’re trying to recreate the Scotty/Lauren popularity.  NOT gonna happen.  I like Jessica a lot and I think she’s going to be successful but I don’t think the tween power texters are going to let her win.  That will go to Phil or Colton, who I don’t think will sell as much as Scotty.  Season 10 was a very special season.

  • BonnieDee

Funny you mention Kellie re:  Lauren’s new ‘do because Kellie tweeted Lauren saying something to the effect of “You could be my little sis now!” I would love to hear the two of them sing together.  Their voices would complement each other well.  Maybe they should do like Miranda Lambert and her Pistol Annies, and start  a side group in addition to their solo careers.

  • Anonymous

TOTALLY AGREE!!!  Very very special season.  This season doesn’t come close.

  • windmills

Awh, I think it’s adorable how Kellie (and Carrie) have welcome Lauren into the Idol country sisterhood. Excited for Skylar to join them too. Talented bunch of ladies with different styles within country. A performance by the 4 of them together would be loads and loads of fun IMO.

I’m enjoying this season at least as much as I enjoyed s10 to be honest, and I was/am a big fan of the s10 group. I’m probably interested in potential albums from more of the s11 group than s10 group, though for obvious reasons I won’t be as invested in the album/career development process for most of the s11 group (other than Skylar) as I was/am Scotty’s and Lauren’s.

I’ve tuned out the judges in the media. My Idol interest is really in the finalists, not the judges anyway.

More tweets about Carrie’s album. People have been awesome answering fan questions.

    Becca Walls!/nashvillebecca

I thought Cupid’s Got A Shotgun was clever. I call it a light hearted Gunpowder & Lead w/ a distinct Brad Paisley guitar track.

Sounds like Brad is the friend Carrie said would guest on the album!

What do you think of the production for the Blown Away album? Thanks!” VERY diverse. A wide spectrum of styles …

I heard Eurythmics, Caribbean, Miranda Lambert, Paul Simon, Shania Twain and Carrie-esque sounds just to name a few.

    About Blown Away the song.

It is intense. I called it Independence Day meets the Eurythmics. And after Cadillac I didn’t know what to expect, lol!

    About Forever Changed:

If you’re familiar w/ Tom Douglas’ writing it is very much his style – story telling, paints a pic of the seasons of life.

  • Bazzle

What? double elimination?! I hate those nights.
Lol! Ryan has 1% credit for the formation of one direction

Kris’ set at LITV has started…

Setlist: Better with You, Monster, Out Alive, The Vision of Love and (duet with Meiko) Loves Me Not (which is first time we will be hearing this song), girl pop medley (We Found Love (in a Hopeless Place)/Firework/Just Dance/Back at One), LLWD

ETA: and interesting, the executive producer of Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and AT Top 40 is at this show (and she’s liking Kris’ new music).

#Me too-super impressed. Loving @krisallen’s new music, so great! “@davidbritz: Very impressed with @krisallen. Great performance at #LITV.”

ETA: Here’s recording of the Kris/Meiko duet “Loves Me Not”

(audio of TVOL and the girl pop medley on there as well)

the more judges complain about Hollie.
The more the Holliepops are gonna vote.

They are saying that Meiko was having some sound issues at the beginning of Loves Me Not. I still think it came off well with the crowd.

  • Anonymous

Love the setlist!!! Hope Kris impressed more people there as he needed the radio to start spinning away TVOL!

  • Diana

For the people who were interested in Katy Allen’s favorite song on the record, looks like it’s “Loves Me Not”, since it contains the lyric that she tweeted – “You got me out on a wire”.

Kris tweeted two lyrics from this song back when he was on his lyric tweeting spree – “You love me when you’re lonely or watching a girly movie*” and “passionate kiss, eyes wide open”.

ETA: nope! three. I believe he also tweeted another part of the ‘conversation’ between the two characters in the chorus – “foot on the gas”

    * I’m kinda amused that the example of a “girly movie” that Kris uses in the song is “The Notebook” because I really hate that movie. It was pretty popular though.

Kris voice was so great. I can’t wait to hear the recording of the duet.

Steven’s attitude towards Hollie was evident, not so much in his words but his attitude was there.  I like Steven but I didn’t like the way he treated Hollie after her performance.  I think everyone picked up on it.  Everywhere I went after the show, Twitter, Facebook, etc., people were talking about saving Hollie.  Steven’s attitude actually saved her.

  • Anonymous

Interesting…I’m excited for “Loves Me Not”, but was hoping that two of those lyrics belonged to “I’m Coming Over” since they seemed to fit the snippet we heard perfectly. Sigh. I really hope that song is a bonus track. Loved it instantly. :(

But do we really buy *music* made by people who aren’t in control of their nerves and are thus relatable? …. Do we buy tickets to concerts because the performers are like this? I don’t think so.

This is one of those places where the supposed aim of the show — find top-quality professional musicians — is increasingly at odds with its being a reality-tv show, it seems to me. On tv, it seems we like to vote for people we relate to, and as power-voting becomes the mode, it’s the relatability that pretty clearly drives it, it seems to me. But when it comes to music buying … Well, I just don’t believe that relatability plays much of a role in people’s becoming successful musical performers.

We buy that first album from the wonderful relatable person we love — but not a lot of non-Idol viewers do, most of the time. And by the time the second albums comes out, we’re back to buying music from people who are actual music stars and came up the usual way, while we’re back to finding some new person relatable on tv. It’s just an unavoidable dilemma for this kind of show, I guess. But it’s definitely a tension.

Thanks tripp for posting the videos from Kris’ show at LITV.  Kris was amazing as usual!

Steven’s attitude towards Hollie was evident, not so much in his words but his attitude was there.

Maybe he doesn’t like Hollie’s style of singing or feel she is not doing a good job. Last year, he was blasted for having no opinion, so this year he is stating an opinion. Should he just return to saying that everything is “beautiful”? Or is it only necessary for him to just stop saying negative things about Hollie?

Here is a transcript of what he said:
“I got a say…um…You know it’s not about being perfect. I’m not sure if you were…I am sure. It wasn’t perfect tonight for me. It kind of layed there a little bit for me. Compared to how you usually sing. But you look good girl.”

Hardly strikes me as overly harsh. Seems to me that he felt that she had sung the notes, but not infused the song with enough life. He’s not the only one with that opinion and it’s something she can change. Sometimes, getting critiqued can lead to better performances. It’s clear from Steven’s own performances, he tries to put a lot of life into his performances, so it is probably something he values.

  • Anonymous

Steven doesn’t know what he’s talking about half the time.  I think he’s losing it as far as mentality!!

  • Anonymous

I think it’s a cute fan name. Who wouldn’t want a name that constantly makes you think of candy? lol I’m not super invested this year, but I’m still a Hollie fan who exists and can vote and I hate to break it to you, but I’m not a little girl. I’m an older one who just so happens to be in the same age group as Siobhan, Haley, Phillip, and Archie.

It’s always fun seeing the names that fans(or the Idols themselves)come up with. It’s quite impressive what some people can do creatively with an Idols name. I have yet to come up with a fan base name for any of my faves. Silly things like that are a lot harder than they look when you really think about them.

I remember when Haley’s fanbase was almost called the lions,(because of her growl)and I’m embarrassed to admit that I don’t know where the name Haliens originated from, but it’s definitely a much better name than lions. I clearly was absent from the internet the day the fan base was named. lol

Does it really matter to most people what the judges say…unless a viewer/voter is so insecure that they have to be taken by the hand and guided every step of the way do people really care.  I’m sure I’m not the only one who actually laughs at the judges critiques…and the stuff that comes out of Jimmy’s mouth doesn’t hold much water either.  I’m a big girl…

Indeed, Steven’s comments were not  overly harsh towards Hollie, but those words coming from someone who hardy criticized last year and lots of “beautiful”s said for many idols, were more evident than JLo’s and Randy’s criticisms combined.

Steven doesn’t know what he’s talking about half the time.  I think he’s losing it as far as mentality!!

Yes, he’s lost in the wave of the show, he knows some details about AI-show past and present from some papers maybe sent to him to have an idea about and memorizing might not be his best virtue, but I think he gets well and feels from his “guts” the idea of the idol-contestants as future-artists. And as an artist himself whose “pitch perfect voice” was not his best quality but the star power(and good music), he’s looking for both here in the show, not only for the voice. I think Hollie is not in his standards of “it’s OK the voice to be relatively good but with x2 star power(charisma) you’re a relevant artist”. Hollie has a good voice and an interesting tone and I consider her the “Amy Adams” kind of, of the group, easy, childish, innocent not really what Steven I think is looking for, strong, powerful, different like he sees in P2 and Colton for example or even in Elise.

Pia’s elimination and Jessica landing in the B3 is largely the judges’ fault.  They waste a save on Casey Abrams, and this year they shamelessly bludgeon Hollie while claiming that Jessica is the best singer in America.  Really, Randy?  The BEST singer in America?  Not by a long shot.

Self indulgence is epitomized by Phil….”I am who I am and I want what I want…I don’t care what anybody says..” > Isn’t that the definition of self-indulgent? But Phil is lauded for it…..While Jessica listens to her mentors…but is described as self indulgent….wow gotta go back to my dictionary….amazing double standard…..

Like I said, it wasn’t his words, it was his attitude and the dismissive way he talked to her that fired people up.  Everyone on the net was intent on saving her and they did.  Case Closed.

Well, clearly she can ;)  Because she did.

Go Skylar!  I think she’s adorable, and I have to say that I do NOT like country for the most part.  But she’s definitely a star.

Sorry, but nothing makes my blood boil more than hearing someone say that the judges wasted a save on Casey. No, they didn’t.

Ten years from now, Casey will be a much better known musician than Pia. I don’t dislike Pia, but Casey is crazy talented, he sang a dumb song that week, and he’d been having major health issues. Saving him was the most sensible thing they could have done.

Pia’s going out the next week was because peopel didn’t vote for her.  And they didn’t vote for her because there was a disconnect, which became obvious with her first single and on the tour. She simply doesn’t have the star factor that appeals to the masses. Casey got way more audience love than Pia on tour.

Without Casey on Idol from weeks 10 to 6, think what would have been missing. Plus I really doubt if Haley would have made it to 3rd place without her duets with Casey.

Yeah, if people want a girl to win, my money would be on Skylar.

I agree on Casey Abrams myself, I think that guy is crazy talented.  A couple of friends of mine who watch Idol every year just for entertainment and have never bought any of the Idol’s music before are waiting for his CD to come out.  They keep asking me if I know when he has a CD coming out because they don’t follow any of this stuff and they know I do.
