Is ‘American Idol’ Judges’ Advice Sabotaging The Finalists? – “They are hurting the contestants with confusing advice,” said MJ Santilli, founder of the popular “Idol’ blog MJsbigblog. “What makes it worse are the ‘battles’ between the panel and mentor Jimmy Iovine. The finalists are often hearing one thing in the studio with Jimmy and his guest mentors, and something entirely different from the judges.” – Read more at MTV

CENTER STAGE AT MURDER TRIAL – Jennifer Hudson takes center stage in a questionnaire that potential jurors are being asked to fill out to determine if they will be allowed to decide whether or not a man is guilty in the slayings of the singer’s mother, brother and nephew. Nine of the 66 questions released to the press Friday dealt with Hudson’s career in movies, television and as an author. Prospective jurors were asked if they have ever watched “American Idol,” the television show that brought Hudson to fame, or if they saw “Dreamgirls,” the motion picture for which she won an Academy Award. They also were asked if they’d ever seen her perform or read her book, “I Got This: How I Changed my Ways and Lost What Weighed Me Down.” – Read more at the Chicago Sun-Times

‘Fred: The Show’s’ Rachel Crow: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Me (Guest Blog) – The X Factor’s Rachel Crow has started her journey to big things since signing a record contract with Columbia records and a TV deal with Nickelodeon. Her first stop is a recurring role on Nick’s Fred: The Show starting with Friday’s episode at 8 p.m. She plays the appropriately named Starr, Fred’s (Lucas Cruikshank) eccentric classmate who dreams of becoming a famous actress and singer. Chris Rene: ‘X Factor’ Star Talks Addiction, Fatherhood and Music’s Poor Role Models During In House Q&A – “When it comes to recovery, you don’t promise anything, to anyone — ever.” “X Factor” third-place finalist Chris Rene may have come a long way from his days as an alcoholic and drug addict, but he’s the first to acknowledge that he’s still got a long way to go. The 29-year-old Santa Cruz, Calif. native became an instant favorite when he told his story of conquering his demons on the “X Factor” audition stage — then even more after he performed his own original song about those struggles. “Young Homie” is now the new Epic signee’s lead single. With just a month until his one-year anniversary of sobriety, Chris stopped by AOL Music’s New York office for an exclusive In House interview and photo shoot. – Read more at AOL.com

Wow James! Best NA rendition ever!

  • Anonymous

Oh man….James was so good!! I am so proud of him, that was excellent! And his little boy is adorable.

  • Anonymous

Sounding like a fangirl but…..James did a spectacular job last night! I absolutely loved his rendition of the NA.

Can anyone make out what some guy said early in the song? It sounds like he yelled “awesome” but I’m not sure.

(ETA: No, he didn’t say awesome. I’ve got my rose-colored earphones on. lol)

And that Hunter is the most squeezable little guy.  What a cutie-pie.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Cool new song by Crystal!  Very “folk”, and not “country”. Thanks, MJ!  :)

Also, great rendition of GBA by Erika!

  • aidancash1

That Casey J video is hot. I really hope that is his next single.

  • justmefornow

This rendition of the NA by James is even better than that version from ’09 on YouTube.
That’s the voice that can fill an arena that first hooked me on Idol. WOW!
Even more excited for next Thursday night! Go James!

  • Susan

Very, very nice, James! :) Glad Heidi’s camera has such nice sound.

  • Anonymous

That was just terrific – go, James!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

James has an awesome set of pipes. He for sure never had to learn what a falsetto is.

  • Susan

James can sing in falsetto, too — “May” I think includes falsetto.  And some live bits of “Crawling Home.”

  • Anonymous

Great solo performance by Casey… Love the tenor gleam that is developing on his voice.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I know. Most of people can. what i was saying is that he can sing notes that 99% of the male singers would have to go in falsetto. Like the “land of free” at the end of the NA.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

I’m not a fan of Casey, but if he were competing on S11 he would run circles around P2. P2 wouldn’t do Top10.

  • Anonymous

Fabulous job James!!  Thanks Heidi for the video!!  Hunter is so cute.  :)

  • Anonymous

    Wow, go idols!
James was awesome and Erika’s tone is beautiful. Casey is great too, I think I should check out his CD.
And Kris has the same mannerisms as my brother, which is really cool to see, since I don’t see my brother very often ;)

  • iani

Very good James! This is a nice, slower rendition, blending a little bit of his personality and musical style, not overpowering certain parts of the song, good control overall… He did great and people seemed to like it!

  • judes

Wow 3 of my favourite Idols on one thread-James, Kris & Casey J. Love James rendition[Erika did well on God Bless America as well] always great to hear Kris & I just love Casey’s guitar playing . This is why I love idol-it has introduced me to some amazing artists & I have the albums of these 3 which I love & I am so looking forward to receiving Kris’s new one with the 5 extra acoustic songs !!

  • Anonymous

I was perversely hoping for an over the top train wreck NA from James (he is after all a metal dude) but he actually did a good job. Oh well, lol. I really like Crystal’s folky song too.

  • Anonymous

Just got a chance to download and listen to Crystal’s new song. Not ever hearing her sing before I was very pleasantly surprised. Love her voice and like Ohio Flies Bye very much. Like fuzzy, I appreciate it leans more toward folk than country.

Always love a free download to road test a new artist.

  • OffLeash

Nice acoustic from Casey. Love it. The two James did great. :)

Nice James, really nice. That is the James I so love – Mr. Power vocals (although I also love May). Casey J – nice guitar work – you are amazing. I still think his voice needs a little work but that guy can write and play a song, not to mention being easy on the eyes. Still have to listen to the rest.
    Again, niiiiiiiiiiiiiice job James!

Erika did well too, although I’ll take Heejun’s version. :)

Kris’ “Idol Worship” interview has been posted. Some nice new information about the album and the process of writing TVOL (one of his co-writers was also interviewed). And, if anyone cares about what he thinks of the S8 fanwars or Adam’s new music, Shirley Halperin (unsurprisingly) asks him about that, too , as well as about his S11 favorites…

Mj, I loved your thoughts in the MTV article, but Ms. Halperin’s not so much. She did watch the Voice last week, did she not? if that was the result of expert mentoring, then I suggest they not quit their day jobs.

  • http://twitter.com/TweetsFromFrank Frank

OH HOW COOL MJ. You just posted an MTV interview where you were interviewed. Talk about self-pimping lol

  • http://twitter.com/MarieAru23 Marie

I rarely post here, but just want to say this, that I really hope that Jessica Sanchez either make it to final 2 or wins. She’s the best singer left, or one of the final best left, can perform her ass off, and it would be good to finally have an Asian American to win or get close to winning, (And I’m not really caring about Jasmine Trias)

  • Anonymous

LOL! He may be after all a metal dude, but he can do the most amazing, unexpected things with that powerful voice. That rendition blew me away! WOW, James!

Thank you, mj – what wonderful reading and “listening” fill the this evening’s headlines! James, Kris, Casey J and more – squeeeee!

  • justmefornow

I guess those powerful pipes of James blew the “6″ right outta there ;)

  • Axxxel

Thank you for pointing this out… I would have missed it …. looking forward to reading the article.

  • iani

Man, what is Casey doing with his guitar there?! Crazy! He really speaks with  passion about his music, great for him and his career.
Erika has really muted the audience with her rendition of GBA, goosebumps.

“Idols overload” today with patriotic renditions, David was great too with his NA. http://goo.gl/IUYwz

  • Anonymous

You never have to worry about James starting out the NA too high because he just goes through the ceiling on the highest notes.  Anyone else notice the melisma he did on “wave” was perfection?  The crowd really responded to that.

  • sagi

I know right?! With Casey’s guitar playing it sounds so rich and full he don’t even need a band to make his music come alive! Hopefully, one day, we will see Casey’s name up there with the greatest guitar players of all time, he should be in my opinion! :) I am not one to normally praise James, but I will give credit where credit is due, that was really good!

  • Anonymous

James did such an impressive job with the anthem.  It’s a song that cries out for power and range and singers with those attributes handle it best IMO.

I am in love with Casey’s song Drive and I think the guy a little bit too.  I hope it is his next single.  It is all bluesy and cool.  He keeps plugging away doing what he does.  He has made this non country music fan a fan of his.

  • Anonymous

Yes, he does!  Yes, I did notice that. And finally, yes, they really  did!

    :)

  • iani

I’ve known he has good guitar-skills, but these are some mad-skills for a wold-guitar competitions, seriously.

  • Anonymous

He sang it in the same key as in ’09, the key of E, which is important because it gives him a high E on “free yeah”.  Either he has perfect pitch or he blew a starting note on a pitch pipe.  All his melisma was excellent…”flag was still there” gave me chills.

  • Anonymous

Somehow I doubt that. Phillip is a better singer than Lee, and Lee still beat Casey, so….

  • Anonymous

Cute Deandre is on Jay Leno.  He sounds so good!!!  They just cut him off!  So rude!

I Have a pre-idol version of Crystals song, I really hope some more of her pre-idol stuff is on future albums…there are a couple that will blow you all away…

I was happy to get a clean version of Ohio Flies By…the other I have has some technical flaws…

I also like Crystal better when not trying to be country…but then I’m not a country fan but love Crystal.

  • Anonymous

That wasn’t Shirley saying that about the voice coaches, it was the author Gil Kaufman. An I’m sorry to say it, but he is a tool. He had been posting nothing but negative stuff about idol all season and comparing it unfavorably to the x factor and the voice. No matter what this season, he has found a way to contradict himself and bash idol for the same thing those two shows do. He actually thinks the talent is far superior on those shows. I know it’s a matter of opinion, but still. I honestly can’t stand him tbh lol.

James NA:   The crowd (& ME) blown away with this!   I apologize for worrying –it’s normal I think for audiences to cringe & hope singers get this right.  Worry wasn’t necessary–this was amazing.  Enjoyed it right with you Heidi & love our quick peek at Hunter again.  ……What a voice!!

  • Anonymous

James did a great job with the NA. When he goes into the really high prolonged notes like “freeeeee” he sort of loses power but this was really good. Is he blond now?

  • Incipit

“David Cook singing the NA at the Angels vs Royals game in LA… I think he was awesome, the commentators said so too.”

Yes. I think so as well…and I’m a big fan of melisma free singing of the National Anthem. Just a personal preference.

“Recording Artist, David Cook”, in a white shirt and black jacket. (that settles the Team Colors thing. Heh.) And another great, resonant version of the SSB like the one that he sang in KC on September 11th, 2011 – the one where he tops “the rockets red glare” with a “flag was still there” that goes even higher.  And a haircut. That too.

  • Anonymous

Just got a chance to watch this Casey James video – he sounds amazing!  He is another one that I never paid that much attention to until recently, but all I can say is just… wow.

Not too thrilled with Shirley sometimes but I enjoyed her interview with Kris quite a bit!

I have to say James did a fantastic job on the National Anthem.

  • Anonymous

The most talented does not always win Idol the person with the most votes does.  Most people thought Crystal was the strongest vocalist in season 9.  Casey is a better guitarist fact not opinion here, and, here comes an  opinion, a lot more charismatic.

  • Karen C

LOL, yeah, you can’t get any better than that.

Love the way he does the anthem, he really does have a versatile voice and a big range.

  • Anonymous

Another good NA from Cook.  I have a dumb question to ask.  Do these artists get paid to sing it or is it something they just do for the honor?

  • Anonymous

I just did a little quick research on the internet and it doesn’t look like they get paid.  Funny, when I was checking that a website came up with the top 12 worst renditions of the NA, and they have Steven Tyler listed first.  It has been butchered so many times by so many celebrities, we should be proud of the Idols for doing such a good job with it.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

Do these artists get paid to sing it or is it something they just do for the honor?

Beats me. But being such a big Royals fan, David probably would’ve done it just for a ticket to the game!

Oh and Casey is good, but not in the league of the greats of all time…He has time to get there…go listen to some Steve Morse…

  • Susan

You music people lol.  I played viola for 2 years and I would have no freakin’ clue that he’s singing in the key of E.  I don’t even know what that means. :)  Why is high E important?

  • Incipit

“…being such a big Royals fan, David probably would’ve done that just for a ticket to the game!”

Sassycatz, considering the speculation about team colors before the game, I thought this was funny – a tweet exchange between David and Mike Swanson, the VP of Communications & Broadcasting for the KC Royals -

Thanks for answering my question.  One thing about all Idols, even the ones we consider weaker than most, can sing pretty well.

  • too-cool-for-school

    Krinjas! Ha! I love it.

All of the Kris interviews/promo thus far has been spectacular. Really fun to have him “back” and around again. :)

How can one get the deluxe version? Is this the same with the one offered to fans who pre-ordered at Kris’s site?

  • Anonymous

Jonins, I just pre-ordered the Fan Edition which is the Deluxe Album + 5 Acoustic EP. I hope I’m right. The Vinyl one is different though (which I ordered too). I heard that some fans who already pre-ordered the Deluxe one, went to upgrade / change to the Fan Edition.

Thanks – really great – dl’d vid and iTunes.

I saw the Idol Worship with Kris. He looked so happy discussing the process of writing TVOL. Great that he mentioned the acoustic songs too.

And LOL Kris, he is a smart guy, that’s all I can say.

More vids of David’s NA have cropped up, this one shows briefly, how low the plane was when it came over the stadium.  At that point you can’t even hear Dave.  I would have ducked, lol. (Some of the other official broadcast vids have been removed for copyright content issues.)

YES! I love Steve Morse, one of my favs growing up. His chops are ridiculous. Add in Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Ty Tabor and Phil Keaggy and you have my playlist growing up.

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig HaleysShindig

    That was really good!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Thanks for posting those videos.  A really great rendition of the NA by David!  I love the variations, and I’m impressed with his range.  Very nicely done!

  • fuzzywuzzy

If “Ohio Flies By” is an example of the kind of songs and singing on Crystal’s next CD, then I think that I’m going to like it far more than her last CD.  I much prefer “folk” Crystal to “country” Crystal.

  • http://twitter.com/HaleysShindig HaleysShindig

Haley, why you gotta tease me like this:
“There’s a song called ‘Wonderland’ that it feels like it’s from a different time, like new age Motown. It’s just a lovey dovey tune that listeners can easily relate to.”

BTW, if you haven’t read that interview, do so, a lot of insight into Haley the Artist and it shows a side of her a lot of people aren’t familiar with. Pop Crush did a great job and asked a lot of great questions.

  • LVD

Oh and Casey is good, but not in the league of the greats of all time…He has time to get there…go listen to some Steve Morse…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v

Thanks that was awesome! That is more classical guitar. Casey can also play classical guitar, but it is not really something you are going to incorporate into country music. In fact as whole these days I think it is actually really difficult to incorporate too much guitar into your music, music these days are more about catchy tunes then heavy instrumentals. Casey also isn’t really one for showing off his guitar skills or anything, if a song only requires rhythm guitar playing then Casey would only do rhythm guitar playing. Some people have suggested that Casey record one song with only guitar for his album, that would have been nice. Or it would nice if he could just sit down one day and really show what he can do with the guitar. Not that I am claiming he one of the greats or anything, there is a lot more involved in determining if you are really a great guitar player and people use different criteria over a long period of time. For some it is playing a variety of different styles, for others it is technique and for others it is only about the emotion in your playing, or the emotion you can invoke. But I think he pretty good especially in today’s music scene.
    Here is a bit more of Casey’s guitar playing;
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fnIy2lfNx0

Funny enough the only place where Casey has had a bit of a small chance to show more classical skill, was on Have you ever really loved a women. But it is only a little bit nothing big. lol

  • http://twitter.com/MoriaPolonius Moria Polonius

I was shocked though, shocked !!! that Shirley asked about the other guy, her face even lit up. Heh.

You mean Adam? Lol, he’s getting to the Voldemort status here as well. I don’t know what’s so shocking about it –  their albums drop week apart and the interview was for Idol Worship (Hangover?), the question wasn’t that much out of place. Although I did notice that in the ton of interviews Adam has done recently he almost never gets asked about Kris, they aren’t linked nearly as often as Kris says.

  • http://twitter.com/TylerWV TylerWV

I just played Casey’s new cd yesterday.  Only one listen so far.  Have loved his lead single since the first time I heard it.  I will say I was disappointed not to hear more of his bluesy style in the cd.  My other two favs on the cd are Workin On It, which made me laugh and Miss Your Fire.  The latter was totally unexpected, completely different and I love it!  Hope its his next single.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for posting.  Heejun’s “God Bless America” was very, very nice. :)

  • http://twitter.com/weeeeezle weezle

I agree, I rarely read an article about Adam where they mention that other guy…glad to hear that they support each other..very cool…

I really didn’t think Farmer’s Daughter was very country at all.  She did some country-tinged arrangements live, but the CD itself was more folk/roots/rock.

I think the design of the new website is lovely, but I really hope that there’s more content there soon.  I’m not a fan of websites that are essentially parking spaces for social media accounts.

As for the new song, I haven’t heard it yet, but I’ll give it some time after this weekend.

  • Anonymous

I want to hear ‘Ohio Flies’ but I can’t get it unless I subscribe to an email listing, which I don’t want to do – so I’ll wait till it’s released I guess.

  • Indigobunting

“I want to hear ‘Ohio Flies’ but I can’t get it unless I subscribe to an email listing, which I don’t want to do – so I’ll wait till it’s released I guess.”

When I left my email address for the free download I received two links; one to get the download and one to confirm my subscription.  I just clicked the download because I don’t need more spam; hopefully that will work.
Like the song, although at over 5 minutes, it is way too long for a slow song.  I really liked her album, even if it was a little sleepy.  I never thought it was country at all (except for two songs were a little country tinged) but very folk-rock. Farmer’s Daughter is an outstanding song.

I hope some of the people who think James screams will listen to his NA.  It’s fantastic.

  • DragonFly

Although I wholeheartedly give a “like” to the comment above (zzatrms) because it being the NA he gave it just the right amount of flair — I also WHOLEHEARTEDLY enjoy the type of “screamin” James does in some of his other songs.  Would never want that to change.
