“Idol” turns mentor for Paw Paw High vocal students – PAW PAW – When Matt Giraud walked into the choir room Tuesday at Paw Paw High School, Jasmine Westerfield’s eyes grew large and her lips pursed into a small “o.” Too stunned to do more than stare at her idol, a friend asked Giraud if Westerfield could shake his hand while he noodled around on the Yamaha grand piano, singing songs and answering questions from the kids.”Of course,” Giraud said, beckoning her over, giving her a hug and asking her to sit next to him on the piano bench while he sang another song. Westerfield sat, stunned. Amazed. – Read more at ZWire

Megan Hilty Teases Smash’s Mother of a Twist, More Ivy/Karen Drama and Marilyn’s First Ouster – This Monday on Smash (NBC, 10/9c), it’s time for Marilyn: The Musical to stage its workshop presentation for potential backers, and it’s literally a hot ticket. Not to mention, Tony winner Bernadette Peters is on hand as Ivy’s mighty talented momma, Leigh Conroy, adding to the ingenue’s existing anxiety. TVLine invited Megan Hilty to preview Marilyn‘s first bow, the Ivy/Karen drama to come and a twist that threatens to cut the show’s cast by one. – Read more at TV Line

Mark Ballas’ ‘DWTS’ blog: Training from the U.K. to L.A. – Season 14 is here. I can’t believe it — where did the time go? This off-season seemed to fly by! Aside from spending time with family and friends, I had a lot of things going on that kept me busy. I choreographed the new Pepsi commercial with Sofia Vergara, which was a ton of fun. I really enjoyed being on the other side of the camera, working with the director and cast to bring the concept to life. I’m excited about another big project that I can’t quite tell you about yet, but you’ll all see it soon enough. – Read more at USA Today

Karina Smirnoff Says Gavin DeGraw Is Nervous About Dancing with the Stars – I’m definitely nervous and excited about our first live performance on Dancing with the Stars Monday. This is the first time I will get to see Gavin in this particular element. It will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure. Everybody is different. If he does as well live as he does in the studio, it will be great. He’s just nervous. But it’ll be cool. I’m excited. This is going to be a competitive cast. A lot of people will have good dancing skills, because I know a few have dance experience – whether it’s outside of ballroom or whether it’s in. I know Sherri mentioned on The View that she was taking ballroom classes from Maks, prior to the show. – People

I thought the advise was watch Adam’s idol trajectory and notice how he varied the performances week to week and didn’t do the same thing over and over.  No mention of belting to rafters or anything else that I heard.

I think that Sleezak was pointing this out about both James and Adam.  James changed things up too, but he didn’t get a lot of attention for doing so, because people either liked his soft/rock performances or they liked his harder stuff.  And both sides thought that he wasn’t being true to himself by doing the other type of music.   I think there were people who felt the same way about Adam, but the vast majority of contestants who do well on AI are the ones who mix it up during the season.  People love when contestants show that they know who they are as artists, but voters also love it when the contestants show diversity.  That could include performing songs that were originally performed by artists who were their polar opposites, stepping outside of their genres, rearranging songs, or doing songs that showcase their vocals one week, and the next songs that are about the spectacle.

Was Clooney still dating the model at the time she was on DWTS? He never appeared on that show.

I believe they had already broken up by the time Elisabetta appeared on DWTS.

Yes – spoke of Adam’s trajectory from ROF to TOMT – mixing it up as the important thing.  Not that Adam can’t belt it out with the best of them, but that wasn’t the point here.  Strategy is.

Who knows how well WTT will do … many of us thought the TWG was not the best track off Clear as Day (too slow) but his fans seem loyal to whatever song they release. Perhaps they believe WTT has an ageless appeal.

I think that Sleezak was pointing this out about both James and Adam.

I would never presume to know what Sleazak was thinking or meaning so I just go by what he said.  The advise and mentions were in regards to two different contestants.  Josh is in danger of becoming one note hence him saying watch Adam who changed it up week to week and made things interesting.

The advise mentioning James was less specific except to say do a “james durbin explosion” which was mentioned in the same breath as another Adam performance Born to be Wild.  They were basically saying Erika needs to just let it go and balls to the wall GO.

James changed things up too, but he didn’t get a lot of attention for doing so, because people either liked his soft/rock performances or they liked his harder stuff.  And both sides thought that he wasn’t being true to himself by doing the other type of music.

I think people questioned whether he was being true to himself because he kept going on and on about how he was giving “metal” a chane and yet he really never sang a metal song throughout the entire competition.

I think there were people who felt the same way about Adam,

I don’t remember that.  Adam sang enough of everything to keep people guessing and he never proclaimed himself to be the “rock” guy.

the vast majority of contestants who do well on AI are the ones who mix it up during the season.

except last season where the winner sang basically the same song every single week LOL

People love when contestants show that they know who they are as artists, but voters also love it when the contestants show diversity.

Knowing who you are gives you the ability to show diversity IMO.  If you know what type of artist you are you can take any song from any genre and twist it to your style.  David Cook did that, Kris Allen did that, Adam Lambert did that.

That could include performing songs that were originally performed by artists who were their polar opposites, stepping outside of their genres, rearranging songs, or doing songs that showcase their vocals one week, and the next songs that are about the spectacle.

It seems since Jimmy and the new judges came on board the rearranging of songs has been frowned upon.  Gone is the ability to be creative and different.  However, I do agree about the need to change things up which is why Sleazak said Josh should watch Adam’s season to see how he did it.  Josh has a huge voice but he’ll get boring if every week he turns in a barn burner of a performance like he’s done over the last few weeks.  Dial it back a bit.

I like the band and the song, in particular. However, I can’t see the teenage girls going nuts over them, like they do One Direction, so it is doubtful that they would take off the way One Direction did.

    Spot on – thanks

Just watched Idology again and Slezak didn’t mention both Adam and James changing it up week to week. Slezak said Joshua should ”study Adam Lambert’s Idol trajectory”. He suggested that Joshua vary his performances from week to week just like Adam did during season 8.

Top 12 guys night James sang “You Got Another Thing Coming.”
Last Time I checked Judas Priest is a heavy metal British band.
That is singing a metal song during the competition.

And don’t get me started on the lying about song clearance that came with his attempt to sing Skid Row for the Year You Were Born week.
He also was set to sing Dio’s “Rainbow in the Dark” top 3 night, but we were denied the pleasure :(

It was in his tweet about Idology that Slezak mentioned both Adam and James.
