Do you still write about X Factor contestants?

I do, but to be honest, there isn’t as much interest in X Factor contestants as their is in Idol alums.

The appearances I promote ahead of time are pretty random, usually whatever is called to my attention.

  • Anonymous

James Durbin is also in the Scranton, PA St. Patrick’s Day parade today, a couple hours from my house, with radio station WKRZ.  That parade is huge, 100,000 people attend that every year and it’s one big party on the streets.  I went one year and never again, I hate crowds like that.  Thought about going to the mall show today but I heard the mall is packed already waiting for him there too.  Guess I’ll skip it.

  • TwigLA

Some of Elise’ tweets showed on my feed this AM. I decided to start following her.

I feel bad for these kids. I don’t think most of them come in knowing what a beating they’re going to take on the internet.

  • Anonymous

Looks like Casey’s management is doing a good job getting him TV time.

  • Anonymous

I <3 Elise. Honestly, people need to realize how much pressure these kids are under. She's bound to have an "attitude" after becoming the punching bag for J.Lo and Randy.

We all need to remember how wonderful her "One and Only" performance was a few weeks ago.

  • getgetaway

They are all under pressure.  But this is something they chose to do.  Elise is not the first to get criticism from the judges.  JLo and Randy are no where as brutal as Simon.  If Elise can’t take it, then this competition was not meant for her.  She is almost 30 yrs old, far from a kid.

  • Anonymous

What makes the difference where it is as long as he is getting his music out there.

  • Anonymous

Punching bag? The comments from Jlo and Randy were nothing! If she can’t handle the mild constructive criticism that the judges gave her, she needs to get out now! Elise might just be too fragile for AI and for the music business at a higher level.

I love Lee Dewyze. I am so glad he is coming out with new material now. I know he’ll do great. I’m not a big Casey fan, just don’t care for his type music, but he has a great voice.
Glad Elise is smiling. I like Elise and think she will do good next week, maybe they won’t change her song at the last minute. I’m sure she was nervous about it the whole time she was singing and it threw her off.
One thing I don’t like about Jessica is the fact that she has already overcome her nerve problem and I don’t think that’s really fair to the others. She is already used to being in front of cameras and has been on major tv shows already.

  • Karen C

I don’t think there’s been that much news about the X Factor contestants anyway.  There probably will be more when their albums come out.

Mj it is too bad you can’t get paid per hit on your youtube videos. Jessica Sanchez would have made you a nice bundle by now lol. Her I Will Always Love You is over 3.3 million views, and that doesn’t include the more than 500,000 people that have watched the video on the official American Idol channel.

  • Karen C

I’ll have to say that with One Direction becoming more well known here, it probably will be good for the groups in the US X Factor.  I think Simon Cowell was smart to release their music here. If they become popular they will be looking for the American version next season, and it will show some viability on the pop charts that we didn’t see before.

The hardcore reality is that at 28, I don’t know how many record labels will be competing to sign her.  The reality is that there are others in the competition who can also sing, but they are also younger, have more personality and are more attractive.  Sorry, the later may not be political correct, but it is the truth.

Elise stands no chance of winning – and to be fair, the same goes for Jermaine, Erika, Josh, Shannon.  And her talking back to Iovine and the judges is baggage that they can do without.

  • Mateja Praznik

The latest One Direction rumor is that they are appearing on SNL on April 7th. Apparently someone saw a commercial.

I am often told I look pissed off when I’m not smiling, so I’m very sympathetic to Elise.

I was about to comment about this. Yesterday Jessica’s IWALY was at 1 million views, now it’s at 3 milllion ever since YT posted it on it’s front page. The girl is getting some major buzz for that performance, and that can only help AI.

  • escape

Yesterday Jessica’s IWALY video was at 1 million views, now it’s at 3 milllion ever since YT posted it on it’s front page. The girl is getting some major buzz for that performance, and that can only help AI.

A lot of her fan base is outside of U.S., who aren’t eligible to vote for the show.  But she’s not at risk of being eliminated any time soon.  The obvious concern is that she gave that performance so early on in the season.  That’s a hard thing to live up too each week and she risks peaking too early.

  • mmb

while it wouldnt’ surprise me to see 1D on SNL, it would surprise me if there was a commercial naming the host and musical guest for April 7 already.  They usually don’t announce these things more than a week or two in advance, and the “commercials” are just blurbs during the show saying who the next week musical guest will be.  Sometimes they flash a screen showing the following 2 weeks hosts and musical guest.  I have never seen a commercial for a SNL episode a month away.

  • http://twitter.com/DorkAngel Goboywonder

GAH! All my life people have said I look mean or mad or what’s wrong if I’m not grinning from ear to ear. Even now it’s hard for me to come to grips with the amount of hate/dislike/grief I get in my small circle of life because someone thinks I look stuck up or arrogant. I can’t imagine what these contestants go through when everybody in the world can decide they know what they’re thinking and feeling just from watching them on tv.

  • Mateja Praznik

Jonah Hill/The Shins will be on SNL tonight. According to the source bellow, the next three weeks will be reruns and the show returns on April 7th. So, maybe it’s possible?http://www.thefutoncritic.com/showatch/saturday-night-live/listings/

Sure she set the bar high for herself, but I think Jessica can pull out another “moment” this season. Also the fact that she has fans outside of the US, is great. I mean this girl has potential for international success. She’s already popular in the Phillippines, I think she could also have some traction in latin america. We’ll see what happens post-idol, if she makes it far enough in the competition.

  • Elliegrll

A lot of her fan base is outside of U.S., who aren’t eligible to vote for the show.  But she’s not at risk of being eliminated any time soon.  The backlash is that she gave that performance so early on in the season.  That’s a hard thing to live up too each week and she risks peaking too early.

I doubt that most of her fanbase is located outside of the US.  She’s getting a lot of buzz, and people like her.

Her performance this week looked effortless, and is something that we know she could do when she was 12, it’s probably also something that she could do in her sleep.  It was a good performance, but she’s capable of more than that, like she showed in Vegas and the semi final episode.

I think the biggest worry is the producers doing the same thing to her that they did to Thia Megia, who was also more modern than the AI producers gave her credit for being.  I also worry about the AI wardrobe people, who steered too close to giving her a promo look this week.  Since she’s 16, they’ll have to fight their natural impulse to dress her up to look like a princess, or an over aged participant from Toddler’s and Tiaras.

  • ronnie

The thing is, Lee is just not a good songwriter and would never have gotten a wide audience on his own without Idol.  These kids get instant fame without having done anything substantial to earn it-

  • Anonymous

I only voted for Elise last week because I did not think the younger ones need my votes. I’ll work harder next week and we will see if she remembers to smile or not. I think maybe it is harder for her to hear the criticism since she’s been singing for 10 years or so (?). just my guess.
It will be shameful if she does not get to tour.

She needs to watch video of Kris after singing Falling Slowly and Randy said
” It was pitchy from the first note, dawg.”
Kris just smiled, ” OK, that’s cool.”

  • Anonymous

doesn’t she have family from the Philippines? If so, I would bet she has a huge fanbase outside the States

  • mmb

coud be.  watch tonight’s show.  They might reveal who the host and musical guest for the next live show will be.

  • Kylee

She’s bound to have an “attitude” after becoming the punching bag for J.Lo and Randy.

Punching bag? The criticism was actually given where it was due to ALL the contestants. If I remember right, Steven criticized her also. Jermaine, Colton, Shannon, Jeremy, and kinda Skylar/Heejun/Deandre got some form of criticism along with Elise.

  • http://twitter.com/KWOnlyDreaming Karen W.

I have to disagree, I think Lee is a very good song writer.  He wrote all the songs on his pre-idol albums which I think are great.  He also was involved in writing on Live it Up.   He has written a few since that as well.  He writes and sings from the heart.

  • Kylee

I’m excited about Jessica’s youtube views, it will help the show get some needed buzz. Can’t hurt her chances either :)

  • Elliegrll

I think maybe it is harder for her to hear the criticism since she’s been singing for 10 years

I came to this conclusion about her earlier.  If it’s true then she really doesn’t need to be on this show, Googling her name, or visiting message boards.

She reminds me of Brooke White, but not in a good way.  She seems to be talented, but fragile.

  • http://twitter.com/Sassycatz Sassycatz

The latest One Direction rumor is that they are appearing on SNL on April 7th. Apparently someone saw a commercial.

Wouldn’t surprise me. They had on that Lana del Rey chick and Ashlee Simpson. Being able to sing isn’t always a requirement.

She’s already popular in the Phillippines,

    Everybody’s popular in the Philippines.

  • Karen C

Even if Elise doesn’t win, just by being on the show, she will get some recognition and some fans. In some cases, this has been enough for contestants to have a music career and following.

  • Anonymous

Lauren thinks Colton has a good chance to win. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does. He’s a guy many tweens & I think mothers would love. He sings a genre that many viewers love.

I don’t want him to win. Right now, I think one of the girls (Jessica or Hollie) would probably deserve the win more this year. But I could definitely see him being the winner knowing the type of people who usually vote on Idol.

  • TheOther

I don’t equate hits on You Tube to any real world success.  Adam Lambert has close to 2M hits for BTIKM.  But sales for that is no where even remotely close to the number.  Jessica does have a sizeable fan base outside the U.S that can’t be ignore.  And like most fans, they are likely viewing the video over and over again.

It’s just like saying that Jessica is actually only #4 in as far as social media popularity, since she is behind Heejun, Phillip and Colton in Twitter followers.  But like You Tube, Twitter followers is not a level playing field to real world popularity.

  • Chris

I definitely worry about Jessica peaking too early and people then assuming she will win, so they won’t vote.  Happens every season.

Also, the YT views are likely heavily driven by the Whitney Houston death.  Anything Whitney right now gets huge views, especially if its linked to a news site like CNN.

The trick for Jessica is to keep this going for 11 more weeks and not get labeled a diva etc…  Elise, Shannon, a lot of early favorites are already getting on people’s bad side for this comment or facial expressions.  Viewers I think are very critical of women, behavior, clothes, etc.. way more than the guys.

On the flip side, she’s getting great exposure, so if she does get the boot, she will still get a record deal.  But winning Idol has its perks, so keep pushing.

  • Anonymous

Adam Lambert has close to 2M hits for BTIKM.  But sales for that is no where even remotely close to the number.

Actually, the video has close to twice that many hits, and it’s been discussed several times here that views don’t correlate to sales. That’s common sense, or Rihanna would be well over 3 billion sales.

But we’re not talking about sales here, we’re talking about votes. I still don’t think having Youtube views or twitter follows will translate into a winner, but it might translate into who will do the best post show (international still counts, and repeat viewings are a drop in the bucket). Either way, it certainly doesn’t hurt her by having the views, and to be honest, most were just excited she has some buzz and hoping for the best.

  • merkureye

Lauren should not have given her opinion on who she thinks will win this season or even necessarily who her favorites are.  Carrie Underwood never revealed in any season who she favored or who she thought would win (she does admit that she votes).  Carrie said that during S4 she would hear certain celebrities were not supporting her and that it hurt her feelings so she does not want to hurt anyone elses feelings.  Although admitting she had certain favorites, Carrie would not make them public.  Lauren should have adhered to the “Carrie rule” for ex-idols.

  • Chris

Lauren is not Carrie’s shadow.  Plenty of Idols have given opinions about who would win. Melinda Doolittle even has now has a little youtube show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er4WIyccOKY

Every year, a reporter sticks a microphone in a former Idol’s face and says who do you think will win.  Some answer, some say, I don’t know.

  • TheOther

I think what eventually will cost Colton votes is his soapbox re religion. He talks about being a good Christian a lot, and he has been getting criticism for it. VFTW has said he’s another Jason Castro.

Before the day slips away and I forget, Happy Birthday Carrie!  :)

  • Chris

She said Colton first, the followed up quickly with an “or Jessica” for the win, and in that vid she’s said she supports P2, Colton, Deandre.  She has also tweeted support for Holly and Skylar.

She has been trying to spread her support around and has admitted she is friends with the repeat Idols that she went through Hollywood week with in S10.  (Colton, Holly and Deandre.)

  • Anonymous

I have mixed feelings about the Elise “attitude” situation. For me, her response was not an attitude, just disappointment. She’s a 28 year old woman who gave an honest response to something with which she didn’t agree. Big Woo!

However, because she is 28, you’d think she’d have researched(read blogs/boards) enough to know how the idol audience reacts to every word, facial expressions, etc. It sucks, but it happens to someone every year. Hoping this week her talent will reign over the foolishness.

  • Anonymous

Carrie is not God and it’s not like Lauren is the first Idol to state her preferences. I’m no Lauren fan because I don’t really see anything special about her, but it’s not necessary that she be a Carriebot and act and think like Carrie Underwood. I really don’t think Lauren’s opinion is really going to make a big difference in who the voters vote her.

  • Anonymous

I know she said Jessica, too. I wasn’t stating that she doesn’t support other contestants. I was talking about Colton because many people have talked about Jessica & Phillip being the front-runners this season, but she said Colton as being a possible winner. I was just stating I think that Colton has a good chance of being the winner this year knowing who usually votes for Idol even though many people are concentrating on Jessica, Hollie, & Phillip.

  • BonnieDee

Adam Lambert supported Haley last year.  This is up to the individual person to make up their own mind if they want to make their opinions public or not.  I respect Carrie’s, Adam’s and Lauren’s decisions equally on the matter.

  • Anonymous

Well, I think we have to remember that Lauren Alaina is a 17 year old, Christian girl from the South.  The favorites she listed are exactly who I would have guessed she would like. My sister and I both really like Colton too, despite the fact that we are in our twenties and from the Northeast. ;)

I don’t think Colton will win, but it’s likely that he will go very far.  Top 5 is a good bet. He’s been getting through despite performing early on in the performance line-up.  Clearly, he’s appealing to the people who actually vote.

My money’s still on Jessica winning.

  • Anonymous

Prime_Minister: My money’s still on Jessica winning.

I would love for Jessica to win & she’s my favorite right now. But I’m unsure if she will win.

She’s clearly one of the front-runners right now. But Idol voters love contestants who show growth throughout the competition. Many of the recent Idol winners have improved throughout the competition & weren’t front-runners at the beginning of the live shows (top 12/13). I could make a case that 4 out of our 5 last winners (Jordin, Kris, Lee, & Scotty) all improved during the competition & weren’t one of the front-runners when live shows started.

FYI: I don’t consider Scotty the front-runner when live shows started. I think most people considered James & Lauren the front-runners. IMO Scotty became the front-runner later during the season.

  • Chris

OK.  I just wanted to avoid the “she picked Colton” debate.  I think she is trying to dance around as politically as possible by listing multiple contestants.  And someone posted that she gave all of them cameras so she’s dancing a fine line.

  • Kirsten

I’m totally fine with Lauren stating who she likes on the show. It just means that she watches the show and is not afraid to voice who she likes. I think it’s cute.

It’s when Idols say “I don’t like so-and-so” that I think they cross the line. One is a positive endorsement and the other is a negative.  These kids don’t need any more knocks then they are getting. Of course, they are free to do that, but I won’t like it.

In other news, somebody tweet Elise and tell her to stop reading the internet. That’s a recipe for poor self-esteem. We are brutal out here in the blogisphere.

  • http://twitter.com/poppetawoppet Emily

late comment but to me it just seemed like Elise was super frustrated with herself, and angry that she didn’t perform as well as she could, and she was so overwhelmed with that she reacted badly to the criticism (which for me for you was a little harsh for that performance: I don’t think it was as bad as the judges made it out to be) That said, she should have been savvy enough to find something to do with the song, or have enough backbone to say, no I’m keeping my original song. I think next week we’ll see for sure

Adam Lambert supported Haley last year.

Really? We never hear about Adam Lambert on this blog. Please tell us more.

Didi’s a good interviewer that was a amusing interview I liked that Lauren tried to sneak in to see the contestants shes a little shit (in a good way). It cracks me up that she almost took her eye out with that ear piece.  Shes like watching a Nascar race I am always waiting for the crash (again in a good way). Thought her answer about Jimmy was good although she seems to have forgotten he did have some critisms of her last year.  As to having favorites from this year  I do not care if any past idol states who they prefer I also do not think that any of them have the power to sway the vote. In the idol world there would always be as many people voting for someone because the former idol liked them as people voting for anybody else because that idol liked someone.
I agree with her that Colton/ Jessica are a possible final match up.  The top five might be Colton,Jessica,P2, Hollie,Skylar.I think as of today Jessica is a lock for one of the final spots and the other four will via for the second final spot.

  • Chris

Thanks for posting that… A favorite vote for Joshua and Skylar (in no particular order, he’s weaseling too.)

I think Carrie’s position is fair given her power, e.g. her and Kelly are superstars, with millions of fans worldwide.  She may be better off being careful.  And Ryan tends to stay out of the fray, but same point.  Power.

However as this board loves to state, Lauren didn’t win.  Neither did James, or Adam, or Melinda, etc…

I thought Lee said he cut his hair. Wow, it must have been really long before the cut. Prefer shorter hair but he still looks great and a lot more thinner. I love If You Want. This is the best audio I’ve heard of the song. Wish the video clip wasn’t cut at the end. Though I love acoustic Lee, I’m looking forward to more production on this song. I seriously can’t wait for the album.

Or Crystal Bowersox, who was an early favorite over Lee Dewyze.  Or David Archuleta. Or Chris Daughtry, who was a shock boot.  I would even add Pia Toscano (whom Adam liked) who was also seen as an early favorite.

As I said, there are those who probably have little chance of winning and that would be Elise, Jermaine, Shannon, Josh, Erika.

    .

According to Dial Idol, from the top 13 to the top 2, the only one who was ever ahead of Scotty was Lauren for Top 12 and that was only by less than 1 point.  Even the Top 7 when his ”Swingin” perforance got a bunch of criticism by the judges, and they placed him in the bottom 3, he was way above the others.

I know Dial Idol aren’t 100% accurate but I think they were pretty close.  Not very many weeks where he wasn’t quite a bit ahead of the others according to them.

James gave a sweet interview.  Love that he’s working for arts education in the schools and that he himself benefited from music training in school.  Many talented kids don’t have money for private lessons–without school music programs so much talent would be lost!  That was one of James’ best interviews!  Good for him supporting music in schools!  Yep–Lauren is always up to a little mischief, and that makes her fun, a typical teen.  And yep–Scotty’s on the mound pitching.  All doing their “things.”

Rach257: we’re losing an hour tonight…where does it go?
thedavidcook: Down to fraggle rock, if memory serves me correctly.

He’s too cute. Also, how sweet of him to compliment Kris. I do quite enjoy the Idol love shown between the Idols I’m fans of.

I meant front-runner status as Idol viewers perceive certain people the front-runners each season. This year the front-runners are widely considered to be Jessica & Phillip.

We don’t know who had the most votes every week. Just like Adam was considered a front-runner in S8. For all we know, Kris could have consistently been top 3 almost every week in voting. But no one would have considered him a front-runner because we don’t know the votes. Most people didn’t considered Lee a front-runner. He could have been consistently in the top 3 for most of the season which I would consider a front-runner, but we don’t know the votes.

  • http://twitter.com/ladymctech ladymctech

I think the entire Idol experience qualifies as substantial. The contestants who make it to the end have been through a pretty grueling process week after week. And for some like Lee, they have been doing the bar circuit for years prior to the show.

  • Anonymous

Not sure who you mean by majority of Idol viewers…do you mean those of us here who comment weekly on the show?  Because as many of us as there are, I don’t think we are the majority of Idol viewers when there are between 15 and 17 million watching weekly.

“David Cook had a Q & A just minutes ago on Twitter.  Here is a twitlonger with all the questions & answers.”

Aww, Thanks, wordnerdarchie!  Down to Fraggle Rock? Good to know. lol. Nice mentions of Carrie and Kris, and The Boss…Now I have to look up this All Star Weekend – sports related, I gather?

BTW – Loved the snarky answer about “those fantastic Idol group numbers.” Heh.

  • Anonymous

I’m including Idol viewers, media, odds makers, etc. Multiple odd makers heading in the top 13 thought James, Pia, & Lauren were the best odds to win. Scotty was behind all 3 of them & some odds makers had him even behind Casey & Jacob who had great performances in the semi-finals. This year the perceived front-runners are Jessica & Phillip which have the best odds with multiple odds makers & many of the media perceive them as the front-runners.

I’m a Scotty fan. That doesn’t mean I think he was the perceived front-runner by many of these people heading into the top 13. Many people has him getting into the top 5, but never winning. As I said before, I think he became a front-runner as the season went on, but I wouldn’t say it was until probably at least the top 10.

DialIdol is good for usually figuring who’s eliminated. But I would never say it’s a good indication of a front-runner. Example: Many weeks last year had Jacob in the top 4 of DialIdol, but I don’t think he was considered a front-runner.

  • Anonymous

I know you like Scotty…I didn’t think you were dissing him at all…hope I didn’t give that impression.

I just think they had a better handle on who the front runners were than the odds makers, media, etc., based on the stats Dial Idol gathered on votes.  They were pretty close on who was leaving based on their stats so I assume they were close on where the contestants each placed based on those same stats.

Consider that Jacob ended up in 5th place – just one position out.  Another interesting one is Wk 7 (Scotty’s Swingin) AI had him in the bottom 3, but Dial Idol had him alone in #1 with 24 points, next closest to him was 14 points and I can’t believe they were that far off but hey, I’m just a viewer so who knows.  Don’t know how AI’s bottom 3 people affected the odds makers and others but…just sayin

Don’t have a clear idea where or how Dial Idol gets their stats, and not a clue at all where the odds makers get theirs.  (I don’t like to pay too much attention to the media unless they are being nasty to one of the contestants…don’t mind too much when they are praising them, but I don’t think most of them do much research themselves – just rely on critics or high profile people’s buzz).

Based on the results though, if I was a betting person, I think I would go with Dial Idol stats before most of these others (very likely it’s a really good thing I’m not a hard core gambler…although on Season 10 I might have made out pretty well).

I guess it’s all moot at this point anyway, but I found the discussion interesting.

Heard James got a huge reception in Scranton today.  Here he is singing Love Me Bad:

Don’t follow Jason Castro enough to know exactly what kind of person he is—but he seems quite nice & chose a Christian recording career (correct me if I’m wrong) & that would hardly speak against him to follow his deep convictions.  Just bought Somewhere OT Rainbow, Hallelujah & his new song “It Matters to Me”–had to be reminded here when he was featured how good he is.  Don’t understand a putdown for him.  Again, from what I know– I like him & those songs.

  • http://twitter.com/_BonJovi_ Jovi

I agree….Songs like Fallen, Stay,  Princess, A Song About Love, ect. show what a great songwriter Lee is. And the new songs he’s performing continue to show that! Then add to them his passion, amazing vocals, and his ability to speak to the heart of those listening. He’s just such a great artist!

Last year my husband showed me a betting site that actually had Casey as the favorite. Lauren might have been second. Scotty was 7 or8 to win.I told my husband that Casey didn’t have a shot and that Scotty was going to win..By the second or third week it had to be obvious to everyone.I know Pia didn’t have a shot because she was from NYC and Idol voters don’t seem to like New Yorkers. Has a New Yorker ever gone far? I know no ones made to the top three.

I was not in the bubble in season8 but I bet on Kris to win at 25 to 1 so I paid a lot of attention.By the top 10 everyone but Adam ,Danny,Kris and Lil were in the bottom 3 at least once and Lil was obviously not going to last long , so I assumed Kris was in the top three at least by then.

  • Mateja Praznik

From last year’s auditions, I thought it was obvious that Scotty was presented as one of the front runners? At least that was the impression I got from his package at the time. Scotty and Lauren both got TCO edit. James and Chris Medina got the sob story package but obviously neither seemed as a winner material. Chris obviously didn’t even make it to the live shows and his appearance on the show was all about his disabled girlfriend. James was on the show to satisfy the viewers that love dated rock and metal. I didn’t think he was TCO, but later on I started to doubt myself because of all that pimping.

I knew Scotty would win the whole thing after the semifinal.

Does anyone actually have dial up modems or subscribe to their silly software anymore?

  • sagi

Dial Idol is just where you download a program and then plug your phone line into your modem to the computer instead of the wall. It dials the number(s) you input. It waits for a dial tone between calls. It is no faster than hitting redial on the phone manually, only difference is you can call repeatedly for the duration w/o the fatigue of sitting there and doing it yourself. It counts your busy signals you get NOT how many calls went through for statistics. (it shows you how many calls went through, but that is not where they get their statistics) And, yes, people who are hardcore idol fans still use the program because, like I said above, it does all the calling for you and you are not tied to the phone for the duration of voting, yet voting nonstop!

  • Chris

“I think what eventually will cost Colton votes is his soapbox re religion. He talks about being a good Christian A LOT, and he has been getting criticism for it.”

Maybe its the piano and the way they can spin a song, but Colton reminds me more of Kris than Jason.

I don’t see religion lately as a penalty for winning because for every vote you lose, you gain one from someone who believes its great.  As someone else pointed out, many of the idols from the south have religious upbringing – Scotty, Lauren, Clay or strictly follow their faith e.g. Jordin Sparks, etc.. I think the trick is balancing it so people don’t call them a fanatic.  I doubt someone that came on here doing religious songs every week, wearing a cross, and Tebowing on stage after a performance could win.  Jeremy was pushing the limits so moderation is the key along with great appeal  to a broad audience.

Actually I wasn’t surprised that Joshua & Skylar are James’ fave S11 guy and gal respectively. In that infamous interview with Shirley Halperin James considered Josh’s Top 24 performance the best of the guys. As for Skylar: James loves country, no doubt noticed Skylar’s “rock star” swagger, and Skylar looks almost like his wife Heidi.

I’m getting the same vib from Elise that I got from Paul McDonald last year. Kind of a weary old-timer, ‘what the hell am I doing here’ vib. I like Paul and I like Elise as artists. Some of Paul’s band music is really good and Elise has an amazing way with the right kind of song. But this vib doesn’t translate into winning AI. Which is maybe what they both want.

Side comment: Lee. Without a beanie. Color me stunned.

Taste of Country has posted a contest for Casey James and with it they have the full song of a fan favorite. The review says the song “is a sexy ballad that features plenty of James’ velvet voice and bluesy guitar playing.”

Quote One thing I don’t like about Jessica is the fact that she has already overcome her nerve problem and I don’t think that’s really fair to the others. She is already used to being in front of cameras and has been on major tv shows already. unquote..

Jessica may be more confident compared to other finalists, but I am sure that she also has things she has to work on more compared to the others…. Or maybe she has to encounter a theme week she does not feel comfortable with because it does not fit her singing style. Many challenges lie ahead, even for a confident singer as Jessica.

Maybe the bubble is pretty insular… but singers putting out albums or having singles to promote almost always end up on a few TV programs…whether daytime or night shows.  These programs have musical guests almost every day or night….from well-knowns to independent newbies.  I’d say that is about 150 spots they need to fill over the year.

Peeps like Casey J are going on, not because they are Idol alums but because they have something to sell.  Nothing strange or unusual or amazing or “oh my god”ish about it.

Thanks Alexia & Thirdtime for the videos-I am so glad to see James really enjoying himself-he looks so relax on stage-I just love him!

Jessica needs to show that side of herself to take it all the way to confetti dropping on her head.  People like to feel that the winner is deserving, this is life changing.  She needs the viewers all lathered up, chomping at the bit to dial her phone number 1000 times.

As many have pointed out, her views on Youtube are good, but if they are from outside the voting area, that doesn’t help her win Idol.  Of course, Idol has online voting, so I wonder if international voters can help out there?

The All Star Weekend includes all the events surround MLB’s All Star Game.  Cook and TA participated in a pre-show concert before the Home Run Derby in 2009.

Given his long relationship with the Royals and the fact that it is hosted by KC this year, I think fans and non-fans alike would have been shocked it he didn’t participate, but it’s nice to see it confirmed.

And for some like Lee, they have been doing the bar circuit for years prior to the show.

This is one of my more consistent complaints against the producers; it’s an open secret that most contestants have been performing for years but they still pretend that they are all barely gigging out and doing crap jobs, instead of bringing relevant experience (releasing albums, doing the talent circuit, even getting major label offers [KC, CU]).  I really don’t see how presenting the contestants as talented and self-aware hurts them; surely by this point none of the power-voters are avoiding pre-AI material if it’s available.

  • Elliegrll

I’m getting a similar vibe, but I doubt that either want or wanted to win the show.  Elise, like Paul, doesn’t seem to believe that they are the type of artists who can win AI.  It seemed like Paul never thought that he would make it to the final round, and based on Elise’s attitude, she might have had the same thought process.  The odd thing with both of them is that they never seemed to notice that people liked them enough to vote for them during a really hard semi final round.  that should have helped them to get rid of some of their preconceived notions about AI voters.

One thing that is true about AI voters is that they won’t support someone who acts like they don’t want to be there.

I loved the cover of I’m Coming Home too. He seems like he’s getting better and better with not only his songs but the cover here and the cover of Rainbow in The Dark with Orianthi. Just great!

    Now, about hair.
I don’t like his new color. Either go all the way platinum blond or go more towards brown. That color isn’t good with his skin tone.
And Blake, what the hell? You’re hair was gorgeous. Him and Dylan with the long hair, being shorter than James, formed a nice symmetry when they performed. Blakes’s hair was beautiful in person, thick, black and very shiny.  Just gorgeous.
James!!! Let him grow it back!

There, I’m done with my hair rants. I needed to get that off my chest. lol

Except that Colton wears his faith on his sleeve.  For example, there was an interview he and P2 did.  It started out as fun, each joking that they did not like each other.  Colton goofing that Phillip was the diva of the group, lol.  At the end of the interview they asked who they were closest to on the show, Phillip said Heejun, but that they were all close, etc.  Colton’s response that he was a Christian and he felt closest to Jeremy who shared his faith.   As Christians, they did devotion together.

Lee needs more of a personality and charisma to get anywhere in the entertainment business.  Being a good singer, songwriter, etc., are a dime a dozen out there.

  • Elliegrll

One thing I don’t like about Jessica is the fact that she has already overcome her nerve problem and I don’t think that’s really fair to the others.

I don’t understand what you are saying.  How is this unfair to the others?  They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, and they are all at different stages.  The things that they have to work on have nothing to do with the other contestants.  At this point, Jessica is better than the others, but even she has some things that she can improve.

Jessica is 16, that she has more poise than 28 year old Elise is not Jessica’s problem, or something that I would call unfair.

I find the comment about Jason Castro unusual. While on the show, Jason didn’t push the religion button.  It was later that we found out Brooke led  prayer prior to the shows.  It is now that he is actually getting attention in the Christian music community.  In addition, I bet Colton would like having the successes that Jason already has.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WIHKL34XDORTS2UZP4SWUUTG3U randi

Lauren should not have given her opinion on who she thinks will win this season or even necessarily who her favorites are. Carrie Underwood never revealed in any season who she favored or who she thought would win (she does admit that she votes). Carrie said that during S4 she would hear certain celebrities were not supporting her and that it hurt her feelings so she does not want to hurt anyone elses feelings. Although admitting she had certain favorites, Carrie would not make them public. Lauren should have adhered to the “Carrie rule” for ex-idols.

Lauren is her own person and doesn’t need to follow a “rule” that someone else set for themselves.  If Carrie got her feelings hurt because some celebrity didn’t support her than that’s on Carrie and actually speaks to her lack of maturity while on the show.  No one is going to get 100% support, no matter who they are.

These contestants really need to understand that not everyone is going to like them, support them or believe in them. In fact, coming out of the show they’ll have people who will absolutely hate them, if for no other reason than they may have done better than someone else’s favorite or they get an opportunity that someone else didn’t.  They are forever in competition with every single idol who ever stepped on that stage, regardless of season, genre, or what place they come in.

The Idol bubble is a very bizarre place and one that no matter how far these artists go in their careers they can’t escape it.  There will always be negative comments so they are better off getting used this fact earlier rather than later.

  • Taro

Since we are on the topic of who might win AI this year, has any of the past winners won after a 2nd or more attempt? If not, then statistically the 2nd timers don’t have good odds on winning.

randi:  If Carrie got her feelings hurt because some celebrity didn’t support
her than that’s on Carrie and actually speaks to her lack of maturity
while on the show.  No one is going to get 100% support, no matter who
    they are.

That was a mischaracterization of what Carrie said in the first place (and I get you weren’t the one who originally mischaracterized it). She did joke about noticing celebs who didn’t support her back then (it was clearly a joke, she was laughing about it). But, her reasoning about not revealing her favorites was that she doesn’t feel like adding to the pressure cooker for the contestants, having been through it herself. She’s also generally averse to stating her preferences in a situation like this where she thinks it’s possible for her to swing votes in a certain direction or at least get some contestants a little extra media attention.

But, I agree it isn’t necessary for Lauren to follow a rule somebody else set for herself. Idols should do as they see fit, and as long as they’re constructive and not hateful I don’t see the problem.

  • iFoundIt

She’s also generally averse to stating her preferences in a situation like this where she thinks it’s possible for her to swing votes in a certain direction or at least get some contestants a little extra media attention.

I think people will vote for whoever they want.  I honestly don’t think they are hugely influenced by who other Idols like.  I remember back in Season 8, Carrie Underwood did reveal that her favorites were Kris Allen and Danny Gokey.

My issue with Elise is not that she does not smile, it is that the smile never reaches her eyes. She has absolutely no expression in her eyes at all- nothing ever moves. I actually pondered if she has had botox injections as it was so apparent to me that her face does not move naturally. It just robs her face of enthusiasm or even being involved in her own performances. Voice wise I love her, but IMO she cannot emote to save her life and that keeps her at a distance from me. YMMV.

There are tons of artists vying for those lucrative spots on TV talk shows tons it’s very competitive, and to be honest, I think it is kind of a big deal that Casey has gotten a couple of those spots.

I keep playing that (Mama, I’m Coming Home) over and over and over! James AND Blake and Dylan sound fantastic! I don’t care for James’ ‘orange’ hair, but apparently he does – and I LIKE the short hair on Blake!

iFoundIt:   I remember back in Season 8, Carrie Underwood did reveal that her favorites were Kris Allen and Danny Gokey.

Not while s8 was going on. After the season was over she made a comment about how nice Kris and Danny are. I can see why her bringing them up was interpreted as a revelation of her favorites but it may just have been her singling out 2 contestants she got along with especially well.

iFoundIt: I think people will vote for whoever they want. I honestly don’t think they are hugely influenced by who other Idols like.

I tend to agree, but I think Carrie fears differently especially because all the country blogs and possibly some mainstream media would pick up anything indicating who her favorites are and likely blow it up into something bigger. It seems to me she’d just rather not take the chance and that’s fine.

I’m sure there will be things they all have trouble with, but I still say nerves are a huge part of why some of the Idols fail. Jessica already has experience dealing with that. I just think it’s a little unfair..but with that said..Jessica is a great singer. Still don’t think she’ll win it all, but you never know.

  • Chris

Great points.  These contestants need thick skin fast or just stay off the internet, twitter, etc… Someone saying they think Jessica, Colton, P2 will win is the least of the comments that might hurt their feelings.

I have seen some things on this board, YT, twitter, etc.. that would make a sailor blush. Going on Idol or X Factor or any reality show is a blessing and a curse, so they have to live with both sides of fame.

  • Anonymous

Do you think Jessica should have tried out for The Voice or X Factor instead?

I’m starting to wonder myself if her kind of talent can ever be appreciated on a show like idol. Maybe Simon would make her a bigger star while Idol fans may vote her off too early.

Just wondering since I’ve been seeing a lot of negative comments about her…

  • Axxxel

Yeah, people tend to root for the blossoming underdog and she is not one… So there should be something that make us root for her. Showing progress (not easy for a good singer like her???) or being versatile or touch the audience’s heart or something else…Looking forward to Jessica doing more than beautiful ballads.

Maybe this is not a good comparison. I still remember Adam Lambert (Season 8) as a very confident contestant singing “Black and White” in the top 13. I think people were very touched when he showed his vulnerability in e.g.”Mad World” and were shocked in “Ring of Fire”…but he ended in the bottom 2 after showing off his long note and his confident strut from the stairs in : “Feeling Good”  (Rat Pack). Too confident for one’s taste ?

  • Axxxel

Yeah.. we can learn from this and apply in our personal lives… Control your nerves, control your destiny. – nah joking…or not.

Maybe you can see Jessica’s advantage when it comes to controlling nerves  as unfair… I think it is a good challenge for the other contestants to step up their game. Which is good for us audience … As for Jessica, I think  it is tougher to maintain a certain level of quality than to develop a quality while still being in the steeper part of the learning curve and experiencing more progress.

  • Axxxel

Yeah, I tend to agree. Adam Lambert rooted for Haley Reinhart (last season) during the competition… It did make me watch her video’s more but it did not change my opinion about her.

Nah, those other shows don’t take people as talented as she is.
