Danny Gokey’s ‘My Best Days’ sells 65K in first week

enters the country album-sales chart at No. 3 and The Billboard 200 at No. 4. having sold more than 65,000 copies of My Best Days in his first week. That’s a few thousand better than Bucky Covington did with his debut a few years back, and I believe (I’m sure RCA will have a press release with the specifics later today) that gives My Best Days the best first-week numbers for any new male country act since Billy Ray Cyrus’ Some Gave All did about 90,000 back in 1992.

Idol track sales: Kris Allen passes a million; Danny Gokey, John Legend see huge gains

Kris Allen easily passes the million mark this week with Live Like You’re Dying. Selling more than 57,000 downloads, it comes in at No. 22 on Nielsen SoundScan’s Top Digital Tracks chart. Adam Lambert comes in at No. 23, selling almost 54,000 copies of Whataya Want From Me.

Danny Gokey’s American Idol performance paid big dividends for My Best Days Are Ahead of Me. The track’s week-over-week sales increased 1,270 percent, the 28,000 downloads it sold last week nearly half its cumulative total.

Jennifer Hudson to perform ‘One Shining Moment’

NEW YORK (AP) — Jennifer Hudson will be the new voice of “One Shining Moment.”

The Grammy and Oscar winner has recorded her version of the song that plays each year at the end of the CBS broadcast of the NCAA men’s basketball championship game. Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross have performed previous renditions.

The network said Tuesday that Hudson will be the first woman to sing it. The tune by folk singer David Barrett has been a Final Four staple since 1987, played over highlights of the tournament.

Well, that is, if the local news had Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres as anchors, which is about as far as I can reasonably bury the lead here: No, despite what you may have read, I detected zero frostiness between Idol’s two most famous judges last night. Of course, despite what you may have inferred from Ellen’s nuzzling of Simon at the opening of the show, they didn’t act like the bestest of buddies off-camera, either. Ellen and Simon were, quite simply, professionally friendly with each other, which is about as much as one could ask of fellow judges in their first weeks together on a top rated reality competition program.

‘American Idol’ Producer 19 Entertainment Winding Down London Office: For Sale?

From Deadline|London editor Tim Adler: Observers I’ve spoken to say that the decision to wind down the London office of 19 Entertainment could be the first sign of owner CKX preparing to sell. Staff at 19’s London office have been put under threat of redundancy. It’s not known yet how many London staff could be laid off. Employment law here in Britain is a protracted legal process that can take months. The company behind American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance employs around 60 people in London. CKX has decided to wind down 19’s London office given that 95% of its profits come from US-based TV production. Sister offices in Los Angeles and New York recently both took on staff. The company employs around 160 people worldwide. CKX currently spends $30 million a year on overhead. One New York analyst told me this cost-cutting could pave the way for 19 Entertainment’s assets to be sold on – either to new buyers or back to founder Simon Fuller.

FLAMBOYANT singer Adam Lambert added a special local touch to his Mardi Gras performance last weekend.

Lambert, the runner-up on last year’s American Idol, picked up a codpiece during a shopping trip in Sydney.

“It’s actually a G-string with a leather pouch and studs on it,” Lambert explained yesterday. “I just put that on and tons of glitter and took the stage.”

News came in last week that NBC’s latest addition to their Thursday night line-up, Community, will be returning for a second season, and we couldn’t be happier. Florence benefit concert planned to aid earthquake victims

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A Florence organization is hoping to raise money for needed relief efforts in Haiti and Chile by organizing a benefit concert.

The Donate A Blessing Foundation, Inc. will be holding a concert on April 2 at the Florence Civic Center. National recording artists such as John Michael Montgomery, Bucky Covington, Dustin Wilkes, Flynville Train and other acts will be performing at the show.

The benefit concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets start at $24.50. Tickets will go on sale beginning March 12 at 10 a.m. They can be purchased at the Civic Center Box Office, online at Ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000.

Trace Adkins, Bo Bice, many others join 2010 Tin Pan South lineup

Country star Trace Adkins, American Idol favorite Bo Bice and Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain are among the songwriters helping Nashville’s Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival expand its horizons for the 2010 installment, which takes place March 30 through April 3 at eight Nashville music venues.

Bice and Cain were on hand at the 2010 Tin Pan South preview party Tuesday afternoon at The Rutledge, where organizers announced the line-up for this year’s festival. Like many of the festival’s biggest names — including country stars Kathy Mattea, Heidi Newfield, Julie Roberts and Steel Magnolia — Bice and Cain are artists who are famed for their performing skills as well as their writing.

‘American Idol’ Judge Kara DioGuardi Talks Replacing Simon Cowell

At Elton John’s annual Oscars viewing party, Kara DioGuardi weighed in on rumors that the big party’s legendary host may replace Simon Cowell on “American Idol” next season.

“It would be a very interesting replacement,” she told MTV News. “[Elton] is somebody who’s been wildly successful in music, who obviously knows a star when he sees one.”

Richard Rushfield Gets a Book Deal

Richard Rushfield, writer, former Gawker editor, former LAT blogger just sold his third book officially today. Its to be published by Hyperion. This tome will cover American Idol and should be out in time for the debut of the 10th season of the talent show. Rushfield tells us it’s working title is “American Idol: The Last Empire.”

“The history and the world of American Idol,” Rushfield tells FBLA. “How it created an empire, a phenomenon and how its maintained it…and the whole universe that swirls around the show.”

Underwood flying high as “Play On Tour” starts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After selling more than a million tickets to her last concert tour, Carrie Underwood is aiming higher this time.

Really high. She plans to fly over the audience, for starters.

“We’re kind of going for broke on this one just because I feel like it’s time,” Underwood said in an interview this week. “At this point, the only thing it’s about is putting on a great show and we’re going out with that in mind. I definitely think we have delivered.”

Underwood’s “Play On Tour” opens Thursday in Reading, Pa., with more than 50 dates in the United States and Canada planned through June.

“As far as things getting bigger, it’s just that — the stage is bigger, there are more lights, there’s more tricks up our sleeve,” Underwood said. “We have a lot of moving parts on the stage. I kind of get to fly over the audience. It’s really cool. It’s just a lot of stuff. My band’s great, wardrobe’s great. It’s just more. It’s all of the bells and whistles and sprinkles on the cupcake.”

Sixpence None the Richer singer Leigh Nash wasn’t watching American Idol last week when Lacey Brown covered her song Kiss Me, but she heard about it quickly.

“I almost immediately started getting texts from people,” says the Nashville-based singer, whose band has reunited after six years and is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on an album set for July release. So Nash looked up Lacey’s performance of her song online. “For the most part, I heard people saying she wasn’t very good,” Nash says, “but when I watched it, I thought she was adorable.”

    Carrie did a cool interview with AP in connection with her tour. Apparently she’s going to kind of fly over the audience during the tour. That should be….interesting. It seems like they’re really going all out.

    The former “American Idol” winner, who turned 27 on Wednesday, wanted to follow the success of her third platinum-selling album, “Play On,” with something dynamite for her fans. She’s set a record with 11 straight No. 1 country singles and now feels she has a set list meaty enough to support something spectacular.

    “As far as things getting bigger, it’s just that — the stage is bigger, there are more lights, there’s more tricks up our sleeve,” Underwood said. “We have a lot of moving parts on the stage. I kind of get to fly over the audience. It’s really cool. It’s just a lot of stuff. My band’s great, wardrobe’s great. It’s just more. It’s all of the bells and whistles and sprinkles on the cupcake.”

    Bells and whistles and sprinkles on the cupcake? LOL. Oh Carrie.

    It’s a great interview where she also talks about how she feels about sales numbers and stuff like that and also her upcoming wedding.

    Yes to this! Also, LLWD had an awesome HAC update today. If these types of updates continue (not a guarantee), LLWD could sneak past Daughtry and end the week at #5 on HAC.

    I have to say that of all of the names mentioned for replacing Simon, I like Elton John the best. Who knows if he’d ever consider it, but he has the experience, the personality and the accent – LOL! I think he’d be great for ratings!

    Eeeek, I’m so excited! I hope we get lots of videos! And yes, Carrie is staying true to her word that she’s going for broke on this tour. Tickets are selling really well so does that mean no acoustic tour for the 4th album? (For those not as Carrie-updated as windmills and I are, Carrie said that if they do literally go broke because of this all-balls-out tour, she can always just do an acoustic tour next) I still want an acoustic tour, broke or not!

    From that other article talking about the hush-hush production rehearsals, there was mention of 12 semi-trucks and a total of 120 crew members. Wow!!! I still remember when she was starting out. It’s amazing having followed her career all these years.

    I heard a while back on a radio station that Elton John denied the rumor and also stated was he was not interested .Last I heard Elton does not have much love for Idol ,things change who knows.

    exactly this outfit was intented for a specific audience and his outfit was very tame considering what most of the other entertainers were wearing. Not to mention the partiers.

    Exactly. It’s kind of an outrageous event, and a sexualized one. Just a few hours later he was looking completely restrained and doing an acoustic version of WWFM on a morning radio show, and his look was appropriate for that venue and time.

    It looks like more and more recording Artists are hoping on the “high energy give em a show” bandwagon for upcoming tours. I just have this funny feeling that there is a “shift” taking place and that in order to sell tours well that the bells and whistles are now finding their way back into the venues. It seems that things are slowly shifting from the sit on a stool play a guitar type performance to major fru-fru and visual excitement.

    People are going to be a little more reluctant to part with their hard earned cash…and just like big 3D movies pull in the crowds (even though an underperforming movie wins the Oscar) people are going to want a pretty big bang for the buck. Maybe the big productions like I saw in my prime are going to continue to make a big huge comeback.

    Carrie’s tour was already selling great before she announced the bells and whistles :) There are people who’ve been tracking her ticket sales on the fan boards.

    I don’t think there’s a shift. Pretty much everybody who headlines likes to do at least one tour where they go all out just because they can. Carrie’s got enough headlining experience and albums under her belt and she’s got enough people coming to her shows anyway that she can spend the money on the production without going broke. So she’s going for it.

    There’s already plenty of big production tours out there in all genres and it’s not much different than it’s always been. There’s also people who still like to keep it simple. Lots of variety as it’s always been.

    I hate that the Singapore fans waiting at the airport did not get to see Adam. But I am glad he tweeted them to acknowledge they were there and to apologize for not being about to meet them. What a sweetie. I have heard fans are planning to meet him at the airport in the UK also. Maybe he will be notified ahead of time before he arrives.

    If you are talking about the VH1 unplugged sessions. It will only be available online not broadcast on TV:( but as we all know it will find its way here:)

    HDD mediabse building charts have Kris Allen/LLWD at #5 on HAC, 14 spins over Daughtry/LAY. The Top 40 chart has him at #10, but I can’t see the gap between #10 and #11 since the chart only shows the Top 10 for each genre.

    Hope he can hold onto both spots through the rest of the week to go along with his milestone for sales.

    I’m on Team Lilywhite! He seems quite crazy. Me likes.

    I’ve seen from the headlines that he is putting on a campaign for himself, but I never heard his name before this. If he gets chosen, I hope he’s good, but I don’t think he has the name recognition that Elton John has at the moment. I wonder what would happen to ratings with someone relatively unknown, although it’s very possible that with continued PR, he will be a household name in no time. :-)

    I’m so happy to hear this from you, tierbee. I have never heard Adam on the radio in DC. After switching from MIX 107.3, I keep listening to 99.5 thinking that is the station that will do it. Okay, now I will need to switch again to 92.5!!

    That is Ryan’s station, so one would think they would be Idol friendly. I will admit they do play LLWD quite often. Not so much Adam, though…… :(

    LLWD definitely got into their rotation – it literally is on every time I get in the car. Which is fine, I like it. But then they lose me with their next song in most cases, heh. They still play Archie’s Crush sometimes. No Cookie :(
