Bow to Casey Abrams, your most unlikely “Idol” yet

“I just want to show the world that guys like me are sexy,” said the wacky-haired and be-bearded Casey, who looks like he just graduated from Oberlin College (and I’m saying that as someone who did the same, no big deal). His most recent performance was a smoky rendition of “Why Don’t You Do Right” by Kansas Joe McCoy but popularized by Jessica Rabbit:

From ‘American Idol’ to the musical theater stage

In his criticism of contestants, former “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell made singing Broadway-style sound like a dead-end job. (Hey, Simon, did you ever hear of Barbra Streisand?) Yet many “Idol” finalists besides Constantine Maroulis, who will reprise his Tony-winning role in “Rock of Ages” at the Curran Theatre, have found success with the genre. Here’s a look at some who have sung in musicals, either before or after their “Idol” experience.

SIMON Cowell might be a miser when it comes to praising X Factor hopefuls but he’s generous with his money.

The star has splashed out £3million on a dream home for fiancee Mezhgan Hussainy – and £4million on one for her parents.

X Factor creator Simon stunned Sayed and Mary Hussainy by giving them a four-bedroom house in Los Angeles, two miles from his £13million Beverly Hills mansion.

Went to Rock Of Ages last night! It was soooo good! We had a ball. Constantine is good. really, really good! His part is nothing like I thought it would be. I expected more Rock Star from him and less “nice boy.” He sings great. I may have to change my “smarmy” opinion of him after last night.
Ace Young was there, in the audience. We saw him at intermission walk by us.

    ETA: Constantine is really skinny!

Why is Simon buying his fiancee her own, separate, home? Could it be he has no real plans to marry her? LOL

The source added: “Simon has also bought Mish her own house as a means of guaranteeing her financial security come what may.

  • HermeticallySealed

Maybe he’s being old fashioned. Instead of his and her beds, his and her houses?

Gee, I guess that’s a perfect example of “expect the best, but prepare for the worst?” Maybe that’s their deal for a pre-nup. She gets to keep the house.

interesting article about possible tug-of-war this summer between UMG and Sony over L.A. Reid, who currently runs the Island/DefJam label for UMG (and will have a ton of leverage, in large part because of BieberFever). If he moves to Sony, he could end up running RCA/Jive

why they remember now to change everything even the rule for voting and show as well?i dont get it.
why they didnt have changes before?for adam and siobhan they suppose to be winners wasent this rule for voting.

they free evrything in this season, they even have new vocal coach early before show starts and they even help them how to have stage presence and persona.

  • tuti

even style choices is allowed as well.i just dont get it.

  • tuti

the song choices changed as well.its morelike diverse mix of little old song and modern song.its not fair for past seasons.i hope girls win.

  • Indigobunting

they free evrything in this season, they even have new vocal coach early before show starts and they even help them how to have stage presence and persona.

Tuti, actually that would have hurt Adam (your fave) as he already had the most professional experience among everyone his season- having early coaches to help the others would have helped them so much more than Adam. Some of his competitors were pretty inexperienced ;)

Personally, I liked the genre nights-forced people to go outside their comfort zones and avoids one trick ponies. Scott Mc Creery has a lovely voice but so far has really only shone on Josh Turner songs, IMO.

  • koshka

Tuti, actually that would have hurt Adam (your fave) as he already had the most professional experience among everyone his season- having early coaches to help the others would have helped them so much more than Adam. Some of his competitors were pretty inexperienced

IDK maybe he would have received less backlash for being a ‘plant’? hard to say.

BTW – WTF did Alex do to his homeless head? Whats with the head band? Glad to see him indoors and not on the streets. ;)

  • milwlovesadam

They have always had vocal coaches. As far as Adam’s “staging” his performances, he has said several times in interviews, all he had to do was ask. And they obliged. Guess nobody else thought they could just ask, or knew what staging was. Adam changed that. But, the bad performances and lack stage presence by virtually all of the contestants of last year was obviously too much for the producers to take. They even brought in Adam to try to kick some life into them. They all couldn’t or wouldn’t take his advice. Lack of talent and premature egos got in the way. They couldn’t take a chance that this would be another lackluster year, and lose ratings.

So, this year, kudos to the producers for helping the kids. However, this group is so much more talented than last year, it would have been a good competition no matter how much coaching they get behind the scenes.

Does anybody else think this is a sneaky way to totally disenfranchize the older, less internet-savvy voter? Text and facebook voters will be able to vote tons more than telephone voters in the same amount of time. I’d be really mad, except I refuse to vote anyway.

  • koshka

So, this year, kudos to the producers for helping the kids. However, this group is so much more talented than last year, it would have been a good competition no matter how much coaching they get behind the scenes.

ITA. I’m so glad they are doing this. But then, you know the coaching will only work if 1) they listen 2) they have some sort of prior experience to put the advice in context. 3) know when to ignore the advice.

  • milwlovesadam

Koshka, ITA. This group is two things. They are young. And they are talented. But, I kind of think that with good talent comes some experience. They just seem more seasoned this year. Between high school musicals and church choirs, and performing, this group has worked a microphone before. I hope they take advice well.

And, not to restate this again, but, Adam helped his season’s contestants, helped them pick songs, coached them, and by being so talented, he was the one to beat. They all had to up their game really hard to compete. They all, to a person, gave him the credit for behind the scenes coaching. That’s why they had him mentor last year. The Idol producers had never seen a contestant help others like that before. Most contestants are purely about themselves. Adam stood out behind the scenes.

  • milwlovesadam

Hot: Guess that means me. I can text, my kids are on Facebook. Doesn’t matter. I’ll never vote again. Not after Adam. No, not because of any scandal. That is a dead horse. I’m not going there. Because I truly feel my votes don’t matter.

If Facebook and other means will be used, kids can hyper vote and really screw the results. Vote for the worst, etc.

I’m just watching to see fresh talent emerging, and to be entertained.

  • milwlovesadam

OK. Just looked at the rules, Facebook is limited to 50. Texting and phone calling is still unlimited.

Yeah, still never voting again. I voted my fingers off for Adam. Didn’t matter. He’s still the “winner” as far as I’m concerned.

  • limi

Adam had the vocals, phrasing, technique, range. vibrato, charisma. Three months of coaching isn’t going to make a singer perfect all those areas esp, since you have to start off with natural talent (like Casey).

Fox NY did a news segment a couple of weeks ago about The Blonds and said that the fashion designers are working on something “special for Adam Lambert that is very hush hush!” I haven’t heard anything since about it, but I guess it’s possible it could be for the Oscars. Also, Terrance, one of Adam’s dancers, is performing at the Oscars so maybe Adam will be there to show support.

I think they all helped one another, which was evident was clear by the way that they treated one another. Most of them, also seemed to know who they were, and what type of music they wanted to sing, and nobody, not even Adam, can tell someone who they are as a musician, or how they should sing from the heart in order to make a performance believable.

They have always had vocal coaches. As far as Adam’s “staging” his performances, he has said several times in interviews, all he had to do was ask. And they obliged. Guess nobody else thought they could just ask, or knew what staging was.

Maybe they didn’t think they needed staging in order to make their performances work, or to reach the audience. There was an article over the summer about the lack of staging for one of Daughtry’s concerts, they are just not the type of group who are going to do multiple costume changes, or have a lot of other bells and whistles, but that didn’t stop them from grossing a lot of money while out on tour, or from selling over five million albums.

That’s why they had him mentor last year.

I thought they did it to try and boost ratings.

That might be true, or not, but I don’t remember another season where the contestants talked so openly about how one contestant was always there to help the others, both musically and personally for support.

  • escape

Why would Adam be attending the Oscars? The Oscars are an exclusive Hollywood A-list event and one of the hardest to be invited too. Adam, unlike Jennifer Hudson, who is an Oscar winner, has nothing to do with the movies. Even nominees are only alloted a limited amount of tickets and most usually have their families with them. The Oscars are not The Grammys. You just don’t show up to the Oscars because you want to support a friend.

  • tripp_ncwy

That might be true, or not, but I don’t remember another season where the contestants talked so openly about how one contestant was always there to help the others, both musically and personally for support.

Do you remember during Michael Jackson week S8 Paula specifically mentioned that Kris had been helping contestants because he knew more about the Michael Jackson catalog than anyone? This was after his performance on the live show. Both Kris & Adam have stated that they bounced ideas off each other. Allison has stated that both Kris & Adam helped her a lot. They were all there to help each other.

  • Dakota01

Why would Adam be attending the Oscars?

No one is saying Adam is attending the Oscars. It’s just speculation. It was reported that The Blonds were working on something special for Adam. Other than the Oscars, I have no idea what type of event would be coming up where he would need to wear “something special”.

Maybe Adam was invited to attend the Oscars. How does anyone know for sure how hard it is or isn’t to get in. Of course he doesn’t have anything to do with the movies, but that didn’t keep him from attending the Critics Choice Awards, as an example. Obviously someone invited him. He wouldn’t just show up hoping to get in. LOL

  • Dakota01

I stand corrected. Adam Lambert will be attending the Oscars. In fact, he will be presenting the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2010.

The Oscars and Critics Choice Awards are not in the same league. The Oscars are considered the most prestigious of all the entertainment awards.

I don’t understand why everything always has to be about Adam. That said, Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson will actually be a presenter at this year’s Oscars. And that is no speculation.

I do remember that. That group had good chemistry. Maybe living in a house helped. The contestants talked about how much Adam helped them, quite openly, in the FOX Reality interview with all of them. Lil, Anoop, and Megan have mentioned it.
Putting the Season 9 contestants in their own apts., didn’t help their chemistry at all. I wonder if that was Ken’s idea too!

  • Elliegrll

That might be true, or not, but I don’t remember another season where the contestants talked so openly about how one contestant was always there to help the others, both musically and personally for support.

Well, I don’t remember hearing about Adam picking out songs for people. Based on their own words, I think that they all helped one another with suggestions, and like Kris did with Allie, introduce songs to one another, but I’m pretty sure that the decisions about what songs to sing were made by the contestants. Except for one person in the top ten, that was a very strong group, who knew who they were as artists, and who didn’t come across as helpless as they were depicted earlier.

Adam’s going to the Oscars!!! Wearing The Blonds!!!! Ahhhhh!!!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

How does anyone know for sure how hard it is or isn’t to get in.

Because it is. That’s common knowledge. The Grammys were held at the Staple center which seats probably upwards of 20k ppl? The Oscars are held at the Kodak which seats a fraction of that.

The Oscars are exclusive and limited as far as who gets invited. I doubt very much that Adam will be there.

However, it doesn’t mean he’s not invited to one or more post-Oscar parties. Maybe that’s what his “special outfit” is for.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Putting the Season 9 contestants in their own apts., didn’t help their chemistry at all. I wonder if that was Ken’s idea too!

    No.

    The Idols lived in apartments Seasons 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. They lived in a mansion season 1, 2, 3 and 8,

As you can see, the Idols have done the Apartment thing more than the mansion.

Really, they spend so little time at home during the competition, I don’t think it makes a difference one way or the other.

  • Dakota01

Again, no one is saying Adam would be attending the Oscars. It’s just speculation based on the “something special” being designed for him. My guess is that it’s for something we haven’t heard about yet. You never know what Adam has up his sleeve.

As far as the Oscars, I’m not sure why anyone would care whether or not he attends.

    MILWLOVEADAM

I’m going to nitpick here, but while Adam did help the other S8 contestants a lot, he wasn’t the only one doing that. Both Adam and Allison talked about Kris helping them, Kris talked about Adam and Matt helping him, etc. etc. It seems like there were a lot of contestants helping each other out behid the scenes that season. I don’t have a clue how much of that went on in other years, although I think I’ve heard some of that stuff happened in S7, if not other seasons, as well.

  • CindyM

Maybe they didn’t think they needed staging in order to make their performances work, or to reach the audience.

I agree. That’s why I never got all the Idolfan complaints about Adam’s staging and lighting and how it was unfair to the other contestants. If they wanted it, they could have had it. Obviously, many didn’t want it.

PS. I don’t think Adam NEEDS props or staging either, but for certain songs he wants it and I think it’s great.

For Season 8, I specifically remember that Kris suggested the song she did during Michael Jackson week because she was unfamiliar with his songs and didn’t know what to pick, but she said Adam helped her as well, and Adam and Kris used to bounce ideas off each other.

About the twitter AVIs, I usually use either a generic picture or picture of myself, or something interesting I took a picture of. It kind of does get confusing if you are in a fan group to have people using the celebrities photo, unless the person is in the picture also.

I am on Andrew Cook’s (David’s brother) twitter, and he once said it was weird to see so many people using his brother’s picture or his brother’s bandmate’s pictures as their avis, since so many of his fans were also fans of David and the band. Though then he said if you were using a picture of yourself with him or the band, it was different.

It is also probably that the professional photos are often used, and so many of the fans used the same one, including the one that they were using as their AVI. I could see why this would get confusing.

It was very nice to see a huge billboard of Taylor Hicks on I-10.

That’s true but that was just an example. Adam also attended the SAG awards as well. That’s a pretty prestigious event. The point I was making is that it isn’t necessary to be an actor or movie star to attend these events.

No. That’s not really a prestigious event. It’s not on the same level as the Oscars. Plus, I don’t know how prestigious the SAG awards could be if they let Kim Kardashian in.

Adam might be going to one of the various Oscar parties that are happening. That’s probably where he’s going to wear his “special” outfit to.

karenc, This is true. And good for Season8 to have the rapport also. It is always cool to see a season where that closeness happens, and the group remains supportive of each other beyond the show, considering how TPTB like to foster drama-rama.

Flashback to the epic show on the Neverending DeTour at the Fonda’s Music Box in LA on September 9, 2009, to demonstrate – with Ryan Star as extra opener on the Crash Kings’ last night, Collective Soul and Joey Clement in the audience, and every geographically able Season 7 Cast Member on the floor – Ramiele, Syesha, Carly, Brooke, Jason Castro, Michael Johns (and rumored Chikeze did get a ticket) rocking out on the floor, having a mini-re-union as David and the Boyz tore the place down.

The vids are awesome – but the solidarity almost a year and a half after their season ended is even more so, in a way. IMO. I hope this season’s cast will be able to forge the same sort of bonds.

Well Kim Kardashian was at the Grammys. You can’t say that’s not a prestigious event. LOL

    NOLA,
Taylor put on a great show at the Beau Rivage last nite.

Well, the Grammys have lost a lot of credibility over the years. The joke has been that anyone can win a Grammy.

I actually don’t count the Grammys as a prestigious event. Not on the same level as the Oscars. Especially if they let that Kim Kardashian in. Watch her pop up on the Oscars red carpet now.

The Grammy is considered the highest achievement in the music industry just like the Oscar is for film or the Emmy is for television. I would say neither is less prestigious than the other. They all have their own problems when it comes to who actually wins. The telecasts are all about ratings so they will invite whomever may be popular at the time to boost ratings.

I don’t see why a celeb would get creeped out by seeing their avi on their twitter account- everyone does it. Anyone savvy with Twitter (or AI forums) can see that.

It might be difficult to differentiate people; I can see that. Although Danny knows and greets a lot of fans by name (knows many by twitter name and first name) he has been very accessible so probably a great proportion of his fans have a picture of themselves with Danny as their avi.

Another reason to request that might be to get people to temper their tweets?! He must get a lot of pretty crazy tweets, and perhaps people would own what they say more if their picture was displayed?

I don’t see that Adam said it creeped him out. He simple says he would rather his fans celebrate themselves and be proud of themselves. I don’t think it was any deeper than what he indicated.

ETA: and btw it does look better looking at Adam’s time line and seeing faces of fans instead of Adam as an avi!

Especially if we are professionals or in some other business capacity that we don’t want it known we are big fantards of AI contestants

What do fans do with Twitter accounts that would be so shocking for business associates to see?

I have all my online contacts on a single Twitter account, and I can’t imagine the ones related to my cooking venture stalk to see what musicians I follow or to read my occasional @replies with other fans about Cook-related news. If anything, the Cook fans are more likely to be annoyed by the word games I play with various peeps, since those aren’t sheltered by being @replied. (But one of my musical idols is quite handy with them, and I like to play his memes.)

(Although my avi isn’t my photo, it’s chosen so that anybody who meets me would recognize me from it. It takes serious professional photography to get a good photo of me.)

I think that might hit the spot! It would help in identifying nutty twitterers come the next round of live shows as well: he’d know who to avoid!

  • ilovekrisallen39

I have Kris on mine, but am also on it. It was when I meet him,so I don’t see anything wrong with it that way.

Not everyone does it. Only a small group of people in fandom do. And as for why it’s creepy: It’s sublimating the fan’s personal identity into one fandom focused on another particular person. It’s a bit much for the celeb on the receiving end, I would think.

Kudos to him for telling people to knock it off. And no, it’s not true that the only alternative is displaying a photo of oneself, as the various counterexamples above show.

As flattering as it is, I don’t understand why so many of you use a photo of me as your avatar. I want you to celebrate YOU!

    It that you Brett? ;)

Adam never said it was creepy.

I know that, but I still don’t count the Grammys as a prestigious event. Hell, I think the Emmys are more prestigious than the Grammys. Not those Daytime Emmys, though. They’re below the Grammys in my book.
