Salcido’s ‘American Idol’ hopes dashed

“I was shocked, I thought I was gonna make it through” to the Hollywood round, Salcido said. “I was sure I was gonna get a golden ticket. I was disappointed. I felt like crying. But I hate showing emotion on the camera. Ryan (Seacrest, the show’s host) looked disappointed for me. Inside I was holding back tears.

“But I know what to work on for next time, definitely. Projecting my voice.”

She plans to re-enter the competition again next summer. The 24-year-old Rohnert Park resident still fits into the show’s age restrictions, which top out at age 28.

What those judges apparently didn’t know about Carmina, was her story of survival. Twenty-two years ago, her father, Ramon Salcido, murdered seven people, including her mother and two sisters. Then Carmina, who was just a toddler, survived having her throat slit. She was found in a county garbage dump next to the bodies of her two sisters.

In an attempt to push for the former and not the latter, Rock the Vote decided to corral some candidates and throw a party to get young people thinking about politics. After last Thursday’s final mayoral debate, Billy Dec’s Rockit Bar & Grill played host to a Mayoral Debate After Party. All six candidates were invited, though only Gery Chico and Miguel del Valle attended.

The two men addressed the assembled crowds, American Idol winner Lee DeWyze played and sang and the merriment began. Whether the voting follows, we’ll have to wait and see.

Polished ‘Idol': Venue owners not surprised by Suddeth’s success

Mike Wild, manager of CiCi’s Pizza in Fort Oglethorpe, has to chuckle when he thinks about the sudden success of his weekend employee, Lauren Alaina Suddeth.

“Now I have thoughts like, ‘I may have asked the next ‘American Idol’ to sweep crumbs up off the floor,” he joked.

Wild is one of several local venue managers who knew Lauren Alaina Suddeth before she became the female front-runner on Season 10 of “American Idol.” They knew the 16-year-old before she shared a spontaneous duet with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, before she sang weekly in 26 million homes.

Hilary Duff: Why Is She Jealous of Carrie Underwood?

“I’m a little envious of her right now because he just got traded to Nashville,” Duff joked to reporters about Underwood’s hubby Mike Fisher. “Like, ‘Really?’ I’m like, ‘Come on! I’ll take San Jose, I’ll take any place closer than Pittsburgh!”

Duff added with a laugh, “I do love Pittsburgh [though] and the team is really good. ”

Joking aside, Duff says she and Underwood both understand the hardships of a long-distance marriage, adding, “We get it because we kind of go through the same thing. When we see each other we [talk]. For a while, our guys played on the same team so it was cool to see her there.”

Girls Aloud to capitalise on Cheryl Cole’s X Factor job and reunite in 2012

Music exec slams Grammys for snubbing Justin Bieber, Eminem

So while these very artists that the public acknowledges as being worthy of their money and fandom are snubbed year after year at the Grammys, the awards show has absolutely no qualms in inviting these same artists to perform. At first I thought that you were not paying attention to the fact that the mental complexion of the world is becoming tanned, that multiculturalism and poly-ethnicity are driving new meaning as to what is culturally relevant. Interesting that the Grammys understands cultural relevance when it comes to using Eminem’s, Kanye West’s or Justin Bieber’s name in the billing to ensure viewership and to deliver the all-too-important ratings for its advertisers.

  • emmuzka

I have a feeling that AI will determinately drop the “Suddeth” from
Lauren Alaina Suddeth’s name to keep away the vague Middle Eastern connotations that the name might cause.

  • Yvonne13

I sure hope that David Cook doesn’t add a bunch of crazy instrumentals to his songs that drown out his voice and force him to scream over the noise in the background. I felt that’s what happened on the first album on several songs, hence, didn’t purchase it.

  • Elliegrll

That music exec. raises some good points, but the Grammy’s shouldn’t be a popularity contest. Just because an act isn’t known by mainstream America or doesn’t sell as many records as pop artists, they shouldn’t be excluded from winning in major categories, and the same is true for popular artists.

  • Kirsten

That music exec. raises some good points, but the Grammy’s shouldn’t be a popularity contest.

No, it shouldn’t be. The Grammys are meant to be a focus on quality and not quantity. But, I think he has a very good point that maybe the Grammys should feature those very artist it praises. It is a little odd to have all the big Pop/Rap acts boost ratings for the show and then send them home with nothing. If those acts do not represent what the Grammys are promoting, then maybe they should spend more time featuring the acts that are of they quality they admire.

And they do need to stop giving out comeback awards.

That said, Grammys appearances boost sales for those who perform, so they probably don’t mind.

  • 123abc456

Is an organ a “crazy instrumental”? Anyway I am happy to hear something from Matt Serletic. He has not had much to say about Dave Cook’s record in a long time. :)

  • Kirsten

Is an organ a “crazy instrumental”?

Well, they do always seem to have crazy people playing them in the movies and cartoons.

  • 123abc456

If the grammy awards predetermine who wins before the show I think it takes away from the awards. I think the awards can be snobby but I don’t want the voters being told who to vote for.

  • Hazehel

Well, they do always seem to have crazy people playing them in the movies and cartoons.

But, I think he has a very good point that maybe the Grammys should feature those very artist it praises. It is a little odd to have all the big Pop/Rap acts boost ratings for the show and then send them home with nothing.

Lady Antebellum won five of the Grammys for which they were nominated. Eminem won two of the Grammys for which he was nominated. Bruno Mars won one of the Grammys for which he was nominated. Lady Gaga won three of the Grammys for which she was nominated. Justin Bieber was only up for two awards, and was largely considered a long shot to win both, but he didn’t perform on his own; he collaborated with Usher.

Unless one is a massive Katy Perry stan, I’m missing where the disconnect is.

  • tinawina

Unless one is a massive Katy Perry stan, I’m missing where the disconnect is.

Steve Stoute is kind of an ass.

That said, he has a point about Eminem and Kanye’s albums not being recognized in the bigger categories, and a larger point about it being hard for hiphop to win these sort of mainstream all genre categories altogether. But other than that, the biggest problem is that the awards they did win were not televised IMO. So it makes it seem like there was a shutout when there really wasn’t to the home viewer.

  • LK10

Haha, the organ is getting a bad rap. It is a great instrument.

  • standtotheright

But other than that, the biggest problem is that the awards they did win were not televised IMO.

    But Best Rap album was.

I do agree there’s more than a nugget of truth in the problems with hiphop getting awards in the all-genre categories (I still think that LTWYL should have won for Record of the Year even if they “had” to give NYN Song of the Year [I would have preferred LTWYL or Fuck You for that category too, but I knew the voters wouldn’t bite]). And I’ll be very curious to see how MBDTF does in the standings next year (AOTL already deserves a Record of the Year nom, IMO). But it’s not like hiphop was completely ignored.

  • tinawina

    But Best Rap album was.

Yeah, but really that was it (and Gaga, right?). I can’t think of any other really popular pop/urban act that got anything on stage for 3 hours. So the people who tuned in for them didn’t really see them accepting awards – they just kept watching them lose to people they’d never heard of.

Now mind you, I don’t think that’s as problematic as it sounds, but it does feed into negative perceptions.

Haha, the organ is getting a bad rap. It is a great instrument.

I refuse to get intrigued by anything the Cook camp has to say at this point. Just release some music already. **folds arms** **pouts**

  • Kirsten

That said, he has a point about Eminem and Kanye’s albums not being recognized in the bigger categorie

They were saying during the BNA discussions that Drake was unlikely to win because a rapper has never won that category. Steve does have a point about Rap being shut out of the big categories. It’s not my style, but good Rap does deserve recognition.

But other than that, the biggest problem is that the awards they did win were not televised IMO.

Exactly. Bruno may have won a Grammy, but many who watched the Grammys should be forgiven for not knowing he did. Same goes for Rihanna.

Maybe they need to add a scroll to the bottom announcing who won in the pre-show.

Justin Bieber was only up for two awards, and was largely considered a long shot to win both, but he didn’t perform on his own; he collaborated with Usher.

Usher was shut out as well. And if Bieb was such a long shot, why let him perform? Because they wanted the ratings and the younger viewers. They want to reward the quality artists, but they don’t want to build a show around them. I just think it says something about the industry.

  • Montavilla

This is a strange argument to me. He seems to be taking the organization to task for ignoring artists of color, because Justin Bieber and Enimem (who are both white) were snubbed this year.

Also, he appears to be angry because Bieber and Enimem performed at Grammy Awards without getting trophies. But isn’t it an honor to perform? If you aren’t going to win, isn’t performing for the large TV audience a nice consolation prize?

Incidentally, Esperanza Spalding, who received the BNA award performed twice. Once during the pre-taping ceremony (a three-hour event which she also co-hosted), and once during the televised portion. Which meant she had to work more than three hours — and she wasn’t even expecting to win.

Having watched the entire six hour event, it began to get a little absurd how many awards were given out (best Hawaiian album?), but it made sense that, if you want to honor all the various kinds of music produced each year, you can’t just limit things to what’s most popular. Zydeco isn’t as popular as rap, but someone who devotes their career to playing it should have the chance to be recognized for it.

Meanwhile, I liked that there was more performance than thank-you speeches up in the big hall. It made for a better show. And it made the Grammys seem more like a great big party than the collective stroking of various egos (especially those who can get a self-esteem jolt just by looking at their Billboard scores or bank accounts).

  • standtotheright

So the people who tuned in for them didn’t really see them accepting awards – they just kept watching them lose to people they’d never heard of.

Okay, I can see that. But I think the consolation prize argument works, too. I’m pretty sure Mumford and Sons are okay with being invited to perform even though they lost BNA. I mostly think the issue is that there are too many categories for any broadcast no matter what they would do; maybe the scroll would help. But I don’t think one can say in a year where Arcade Fire got a slot (and won big) and LA got a slot (and won big) and so many of the other pop acts got a slot (and won non-televised categories) that there’s some mass conspiracy to fluff the ratings with acts who have no shot. (Usher did win two awards, BTW.)

As for news from the Cook camp, I’m 50/50 on whether or not this “treat” is going to serve as a springboard for album news (nothing’s coming out until the last week of April at the earliest so they won’t say too much too soon). If not this week, then a press release in the next two, hopefully. But they quite literally don’t have time to push it back much further if he’s still doing an appearance on AI. And if they are mixing right now, I have to believe there’s no way they’re all so stupid as to avoid that opportunity.

  • Hazehel

Haha, the organ is getting a bad rap. It is a great instrument.

Oh, I don’t think it’s anything to do with instrument itself, it’s just such a famous scene that a guy playing away at the organ has become a movie shorthand for the crazy obsessive guy with a grand plan.

  • tinawina

As for news from the Cook camp, I’m 50/50 on whether or not this “treat” is going to serve as a springboard for album news

At this point, I just hope we find out what the “treat” is – if we’re going to hear it this week, it seems like it would be time to promote it, no? I still hope it’s the boot song or a charity single for Idol. So, yes, press release tomorrow or Wednesday please. I just checked – DC is still on the RCA roster of artists, haha.

As for the organ, I bet that most artists who work in Serletic’s studio want to use it when they find out it’s the Steppenwolf organ. I don’t expect David to do anything crazy with it.

Can’t speak to that, but based on Seletic’s work on Taylor’s album, I wouldn’t look for tasteful production values. That over-produced pop lost him lots of fans. But, since DC is a writer, maybe he’ll exercise more taste.

I thought Taylor suffered more from a rushed schedule and really bad material than from bad production. I wasn’t crazy about the production on DCTR, so I’m hoping Serletic at least won’t be any worse.

  • webster

Oops. You are correct. They need a scroll or something to acknowledge the winners who aren’t lucky enough to have their categories presented live. I agree they can’t present them all, but it seems that if you don’t win on TV, it barely counts.

  • standtotheright

Well if this album is dropping April/May then they need to drop a single soon. Like now.

RCA typically drops singles 4-6 weeks before the album release. Even if they release the last week of April, they still would typically wait until March to release the single. (Lavigne’s drop was different because of the potential for the NYE slot, but they definitely have a pattern for more “typical” cases.)

  • tinawina

I know! But March is next week! Which means the press release should be hitting really soon. That is, if anything is ever coming out. LOL. Ugh.

  • standtotheright

You still have until St. Patrick’s before they’re really closed out. At which point, if we haven’t heard anything, I’ll drink heavily with you. (Good day for it anyway.) Kay?

  • Trina

I was pretty convinced being the huge sports nut David is that the “treat”/”something special” had something to do with sports, like the All Star Game or something. Now I’m back to thinking its Idol related in some capacity. But isn’t this too early for the boot song? The semis haven’t even started yet.

Oh and not to sound greedy or anything but if by some chance he scored the boot song, and its a cover? I may cut someone.

  • tinawina

Call me crazy, but I think Aerosmith is going to get the boot song. Wasn’t it reported that they would appear this season?

  • cheese

Oh and not to sound greedy or anything but if by some chance he scored the boot song, and its a cover? I may cut someone.

A cover might work out better for him. We know that the song he recorded as the “extra treat” isn’t from his album. A cover of a ballad (with the word “home” in it, of course) probably wouldn’t interfere with the radio progress of his real single, but it would still remind people that he exists.

Or maybe Aerosmith did record the boot song and we get a random sports montage song.

  • tripp_ncwy

Does the boot song always have the word “home” in it? Will Young’s “Leave Right Now” from last season didn’t.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

As much as I think Cook will kill on the boot song, I just don’t think Nigel would give it to him because of the whole WGWG meme he’s been on about. I hope I am wrong, but it seems like Nigel is making a big push to divorce his new and improved AI from the last few winners.

So, to me, it will be either Aerosmith or someone off AI. JLO doesn’t have the chops to pull off a boot song.

Now, if, by a fluke, they choose someone from AI, I could see either Grammy winner Fantasia or Oscar Winner JHUD. Both are getting some media love right now. Carrie and Daughtry already had the boot song. Adam has had success, but he didn’t blow up the US charts, so he is a very long shot. Kris and Lee are out for the same reasons Cook is out. Archie’s last album bombed. Ruben already had it. Clay has fallen off the radar.

Jordin or Kelly? Hard to say. They have had the most pop success of the AI winners. Both are working on new albums. Maybe.

I still think Aerosmith has a better shot than any AI alum. Hope I am wrong, but it seems to be the direction Nigel is going.

Better than a scroll would be one of the presenters announcing them, periodically, throughout the live telecast. Doesn’t one of the movie award shows do that?

  • Chicagolaw

Well, I think David’s treat is most definitely gonna be Idol related :) And I think it will be the boot song. Since it is “extra” it will probably also be a cover. Obviously, the best case scenario is for the boot song and the single to be one and the same (like Daughtry), but, that isn’t so easy to accomplish—everything has to line up pretty perfectly for that to happen. The good thing is that the boot song, while a big honor, is mostly just a special treat for the fans (who have more than earned it, imo) and it wouldn’t be something that could potentially “get in the way” of the single launch and subsequent radio work.

  • Trina

See I think if it was for a random sports montage they would use a song already recorded for DCTR2 or one of the many songs in Cherry Lanes library (like One Second To Change Your Life). If its sports I feel like it would be for something bigger kwim?

I wouldn’t mind Aerosmith getting the boot song. I’d like them to keep it in the Idol family and Steven is part of that family. Please no, no to JHud. That damn Weight Watchers commercial has made me officially sick of her. Don’t wanna hear her every week now :/

ETA: as much as Nigel is griping about the WGWG thing he always liked David FWIW and he even admitted he rooted for him at the end of season 7. Unless he’s going to backtrack that far now and pretend he didn’t heh.

Yes, but you just know that Weight Watchers will be taking ads out on AI! So the boot song could tie in nicely if Ryan uses the words “we know it was a loss for contestant X, but speaking of someone who has had a loss, here is JHUD with the boot song.” Talk about your product placement. :)

I hope Cook gets the boot song because he would do a great job. I am glad to hear that Nigel was a Cook fan. I didn’t know that. So I now have to increase his odds of getting the boot song to an even shot.

Guitar driven rock, with emphasis on the instrumentals. If you have time, get there for the opener. She’s good!

I don’t know what it is, but I hope it really is fun and upbeat, since they all seemed pretty excited about it.

  • girlygirl

I think Cook has the best chance of any Idol to get the boot song. Nigel likes him and his album is coming out in 6 weeks (or so, supposedly). But I wouldn’t be too surprised if it ends up being someone off UMG’s roster, maybe someone Iovine really wants to push.

Has Kelly never had the boot song? Does anyone have a list of the boot songs for each season of AI? Thanks

  • girlygirl

    Buffynut

Thanks! I might be able to see some of the opener’s set — don’t know if I can get there in time for all of it, though.

  • tinawina

The boot song, with the exception of the very first one, has gone to a 19M managed person every time. And Ruben got it one year when I don’t think he even had a record deal, so I don’t think success level has much to do with it.

19M managed people who have not had it are Allison, Adam, Kris, Cook, and Lee. I can’t think of any more. Are there any more from the non-AI roster a la Will Young? Orianthi maybe? I could see any of them or Aeorsmith/JLO.

Does Lee have an appropriate song? He makes sense tactically unless they are on Lee ignore mode, which they may be. Cook is a good bet. Allison/Orianthi would be nice, they need the exposure.

  • mmb

Maybe Chris medina is getting his own special epic boot song for his very emotional goodbye montage. Maybe that’s what cook is doing?

Fwiw I do think it’s likely cook will do the real boot song. Tptb like him, his cd is coming out soon and he needs a bit more of a re- launch publicity- wise than either kelly or j- HUD. I don’t think there is a snowballs chance in hell of eithe lee or alli getting the boot song. Alli seems to be really in development mode- I doubt they are ready to re- launch her. And I doubt that tptb want to highlight lee

The only other thing I could see for Cook would be a song for the NCAA BBall Tournament (or even for one of the conference tournaments) but that is WAY too far off. It has to be something Idol related.

I’ve just spent the past few minutes scanning 3OH!3 lyrics and howling with laughter at the thought of this team producing a boot song. Thank you for the laugh.

Since the infamous RCA announcement and release timeline keeps coming up (and I suspect Lambert fans will want it in 6-12 months)… I would take the trouble to move it off DCO and update it occasionally if there was a Kris Allen fan who was willing to split with me the tedious work of going through artist web sites for Jive, so that the project could start having broader applicability.

As much as I think Cook will kill on the boot song, I just don’t think Nigel would give it to him because of the whole WGWG meme he’s been on about. I hope I am wrong, but it seems like Nigel is making a big push to divorce his new and improved AI from the last few winners.

I’ve only heard Warwick go on and on about the guitars. Does anyone have direct quotes from Nigel about WGWG’s? Besides which, Nigel seems more bent on divorcing “new Idol” from Simon than anything. He was part of the Idol team back in S7 when instruments were introduced and Cook (who he backed) won. I’ve seen him imply that the last two Nigel-less seasons left a lot to be desired, especially the charisma level of S9, but even then, no specific WGWG comments. Am I missing a major Nigel article or interview here?

So, to me, it will be either Aerosmith or someone off AI. JLO doesn’t have the chops to pull off a boot song.

Now, if, by a fluke, they choose someone from AI, I could see either Grammy winner Fantasia or Oscar Winner JHUD.

Has every boot song singer since Daughtry been a 19M client though? Jhud, Fantasia, Aerosmith, and JLo are not 19M clients. Kris, Adam, David Cook, and Lee are though. Orianthi? Victoria Beckham, LOL? Some other random Brit? Anyway, I’m not convinced Cook has the boot song. Not gonna guess too much til we hear something.

See I think if it was for a random sports montage they would use a song already recorded for DCTR2 or one of the many songs in Cherry Lanes library (like One Second To Change Your Life).

And David wouldn’t make a big deal about a random sports montage and pre-announce it 2 weeks ahead on Twitter. He’s never announced something like that before.

  • gangreen29

I know she is not a 19M client but I wish Jordin was getting the boot song. I think her career could use a boost right now. I also think because of her age she is the one idol alum most likely to have their own “breakaway” and surge ahead in popularity. I don’t understand why the show doesn’t embrace her more.

but based on Seletic’s work on Taylor’s album…

Webster, I never listened to Taylor’s album, can’t speak to it all, but when I checked Serletic out I found over 60 Producer’s credits, not just Taylor’s album from almost five years ago, but Ryan Star’s 11:59 and recent work for Rob Thomas, Santana, Joe Cocker and others, even the past work for Collective Soul. Since David is good friends with Ryan Star and a golfing bud of Ed Roland- I felt secure in assuming they would have given him a heads-up re Serletic – if one was necessary.

I’m actually quite intrigued with the instrumentation that’s been disclosed so far for DCTR2. This latest – the organ from “Born to be Wild”, I wonder if Serletic has it – or just access to it. After all -he’s got a collection of specialized mikes, at least one of which looks like a vintage Neumann. There’s already been talk of the 100 yr old Steinway at Emblem Studios, and the mellow, full bodied sound such a piano can produce…in light of Serletic’s history as a keyboard player and producer on some tracks with Layne Staley, of Alice in Chains fame, maybe he does own it. That’s iconic, for someone who loves the history of rock. (Or even just knows the movie “Easy Rider”)

I know that David was intending to move beyond the ‘wall of sound’ from the guitars that was a product of the rush involved in DCTR, and his inability to be present for the whole process – there’s been time on this record to play with the sound dynamics, as he planned, with the actual band, and even import someone to play a 12-string, known for its’ shimmering chorus effect’ on sustained chords. Between that, the piano, organ, the strings that Zac Maloy added to ‘something’ in Nashville, the strings talked about in the studio, and the Children’s Choir – I am intensely curious and pragmatically optimistic to hear what “high highs and low lows” DCTR2 will have to offer.

Victoria Beckham and others are no longer with 19E, they moved over to Simon Fuller’s new management company XIX Entertainment.

  • Trina

That’s so odd because I have saved the articles where he DID say nice things about him and I think it was top 3 night where the behind the scenes reports had Nigel acting like a big ole fanboy and being pissy Randy didn’t like some performance..and he tweeted during Carries Xmas special taping that their duet was like magic or something. Must have been full of it hm.

  • gangreen29

No, Nigel had said David Cook lacked charisma and seemed to try his best to ignore his achievement.

No, what he said was that David lacked a little personality when he sang but he could be enormous for a long time, and he thought he could have a career to rival Daughtry.

First collection of the professional photos coming out from Danny’s concert cruise.

Several nice pics of Danny with his bandmates.

It was a little confusing but there were two or three photographers working the cruise group. Two were identified as being with Country Weekly, not sure if they were the same or different as the Edwards photography who posted this group, and was selling a CD from the cruise for fans to benefit Sophia’s Heart.

And David wouldn’t make a big deal about a random sports montage and pre-announce it 2 weeks ahead on Twitter.

It might not necessarily be a “random sports montage,” though. Heroes wasn’t (and we don’t know what he would have said about that, since he didn’t have Twitter at the time).

I agree that the timing is off for NCAA BB, but there are other sports.

I don’t think the “managed by 19″ rule is so hard and fast once one looks at S5 and S7, so I’m going with my gut that the boot song wouldn’t amuse/please him as much as something entirely unrelated to AI, or at least something “new and different” for AI.

  • Eileen99

I would take the trouble to move it off DCO and update it occasionally if there was a Kris Allen fan who was willing to split with me the tedious work of going through artist web sites for Jive, so that the project could start having broader applicability.

I’ll help you. I need something to do while waiting patiently for new music, lol.

Re: the boot song, I hope it goes to either Cook or Jordin. I also don’t know why Idol doesn’t play up Jordin’s career more than it does. She’s had big pop success with her singles & she’s adorable and young, so she hopefully has a long career ahead of her.

Sure she could use the boost, but Idol is not going to give the boot song to someone who they now see as a failure.

  • tinawina

I don’t think the “managed by 19? rule is so hard and fast once one looks at S5 and S7,

S5 was the first time they did it and the song became a worldwide hit. After that they kept it in house.

The other ones mentioned for S7 were not the songs used every week from top 12 on. That was Ruben’s song. The others were for Hollywood week and the semis.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

I know she is not a 19M client but I wish Jordin was getting the boot song. I think her career could use a boost right now.

Jordin would be a nice fit for this season of AI as isn’t she the youngest AI winner ever? If AI wants to market the teens, and they want to use an AI alum, she is a good fit.

I also agree, she also has a shot of having more pop success. She is still very young and seems to have a nice teen following.

  • suenigma

My impression has been that on a personal level and from a vocal and music standpoint, Nigel really likes David. But Nigel is a theatre geek and dance nut from way back, and David just isn’t over-the-top enough for his tastes. And I use the term “taste” very loosely. Has anyone seen that movie he produced in the seventies, or better yet, the video of him back-up dancing for Donna Summer? Pee your pants funny.

Simon Fuller on the otherhand…now he adores David.

  • steph6449

I wasn’t a big fan of Jordin that year, but it’s one of those cases where subsequently she’s really grown on me. It would be nice to see her get a positive boost in some way as she seems to be working toward another album.

She’s very pretty, has she ever tried to do any acting or hosting type things to complement her music career?

  • suenigma

Re. the Boot Song, I would love to see either Jordin or David get the opportunity – both are more than worthy. Third choice would be Kelly – just because I love her and she hasn’t had it yet. I loved Aerosmith in their prime, but do we really want to hear them live on the Idol Stage now?

  • tripp_ncwy

On the outside, would 19 chose to give the boot song to Allison? She has been working with Orianthi on new music and both are 19M clients. This may be a way to reboot her career.

  • tierbee

I refuse to get intrigued by anything the Cook camp has to say at this point. Just release some music already. **folds arms** **pouts**

No, Nigel had said David Cook lacked charisma and seemed to try his best to ignore his achievement.

Okay, I found the quote from June 4, 2008. It was an assy throwaway comment, but he hasn’t made such comments about David recently in connection with any Idol/WGWG divorce, right?

Victoria Beckham and others are no longer with 19E, they moved over to Simon Fuller’s new management company XIX Entertainment.

Cool. I was just joking about her anyway. 19E/M or not, she’s managed by Fuller, right? From Wiki, all of Fuller’s non US/Idol clients went to XIX. Does that include Will Young, Orianthi, I wonder?

  • tinawina

ITA. I think it would be a good idea.

  • Trina

I agree Jordin would be a great choice too, and I can see Adam also being a good choice. 19 loves him and it would give him a good reason to come back on Idol and perform. Does Simon Fuller have to sign off on who gets it? If he does the odds then are in the favor of one of his pets.

  • steph6449

Do people watch the boot song and remember it? (Enough that it would more than mildly help someone’s career if they were chosen for it, I mean.)

Have to confess, most often those farewell segments aren’t always what I love to watch most on the show, and probably at least 50% of the time that’s a good time to go walk my dog

And home was the last song that was really pushed to hac/ pop radio as it was daughtrys second single. Unless the song is a radio single I’m not sure it benefits the singer all that much

  • standtotheright

The others were for Hollywood week and the semis.

But this week is when the song is supposed to be heard, and it is the semis (or even pre-semis, depending on what one considers top 24). Which they’ve used at the launch date sometimes, but again, not consistently enough for me to say the pattern is iron clad.

Hell, I might be wrong, but I’m honestly going to be surprised if he did it. I agree that Sparks would be a great choice if they’re casting about for former finalists.

I was just arguing against the idea that 19M hadn’t used one of their own consistently. I was saying that the main, high profile boot song – the one that starts by top 12 and last until top 3, with a performance top 2 night – has gone to a 19M client ever since the first one became a big hit.

Now do I think Cook is a lock? No. But I do think its reasonable to assume that, once again, it will go to someone managed by 19M unless Steven or JLo negotiated for it.

I think I’d really like to see Allison & Orianthi get it. I know Ruben got it when they were shopping him a new deal… I think anyway. And like mmb said, the most benefit it will have to Cook (or Lee) is if it is also their single.

  • standtotheright

I think I’d really like to see Allison & Orianthi get it

Okay, I see what you’re saying. And I think this would be really cool for them.

  • fadetowhite

It would make sense for Cook to get the boot song – 19 links between him and the show, album coming out, publicity and public awareness boost. I don’t think it’s really got anything to do with who likes who. So far as I know, 19 still produces the show and still manage Cook.

    So, it would be nice…

But it could just as easily be someone else.

And, like most Cook fans it seems, all I really want to know is when is that damned album coming out! :lol

  • Mark

Steve Stoute is kind of an ass.

That said, he has a point about Eminem and Kanye’s albums not being recognized in the bigger categories, and a larger point about it being hard for hiphop to win these sort of mainstream all genre categories altogether. But other than that, the biggest problem is that the awards they did win were not televised IMO. So it makes it seem like there was a shutout when there really wasn’t to the home viewer.

I was annoyed about the lack of hip hop recognition in the major categories, too. I was excited it had so many nominations in the major categories, and totally disappointed when it turned out that it diluted the vote so much that none of them won. That said, Mr. Stoute needs to recognize that if he’s going to attack the Grammy process, he shouldn’t then praise Justin Bieber’s contributions to culture and society at large. That’s just begging to get hacked to pieces by skeptics who want the awards to be about quality.

  • larc

Anybody know how long original contracts with 19E are for when they sign somebody from Idol? I’m thinking it’s two years, but not sure.

  • JOJOSIE

THe winner doesn’t always sign with 19M. Taylor didn’t and I think it was a mutal arrangement. He didn’t want them running his career and they really didn’t want to work with someone who was used to managing their own career and wouldn’t jump when they said jump.

  • yaddabing

XIX is Simon Fuller’s new company he started after he left 19/CKX. He bought majority of all the non-Idol/SYTYCD assets from 19 (except Will Young, but I don’t know if it’s just the management side or if the bought the recording rights too). David and Victoria Beckham (plus ‘Brand Beckham’), the Spice Girls, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Andy Murray, Annie Lennox, etc. Interestingly enough, it looks as if Marc Anthony is managed by him now.

Good points, but I think that 19M is MOST concerned about what benefit it will have for them, not the artist. If it is Cook, then he is a known quantity and a past success, and he has a new album coming out, which they will profit from. Cook also has a history of receiving big jumps in all of his sales from his AI appearances – not sure about Allison? I do hope that they do something for Allison, but I am not sure they would give her this big an opportunity based on her history. How about an Cook/Allsion duet boot song? THAT would totally rock!

Thanks! I forgot about that. I read the People article. I wouldn’t call that a pot shot at guitar players as a whole, exactly. I think it was a pot shot (IMO mostly deserved) at the S9 contestants who “got lost a little bit” behind their guitars and/or chose to use it every time. That one quote isn’t nearly as asinine as Warwicks 10,000 ridiculous ones have been. But that’s JMO.

I can’t see Allison getting the boot song. Although she’s a teenager, her style isn’t the type TPTB want — they want a Bieber/Miley, not a rocker chick. And Allison said her new music is going to be “dirtied up”, which doesn’t really fit the vibe for a boot song.

I’d LOVE it if Kris got it, but I doubt that he would. Other Idols I could see possibly getting it would be Cook, Kelly, Adam or Jordin.

I’ve seen Adam in concert once (aside from the AI tour, that is). I did see him in the crowd at Alisan Porter/The Canyons’ show a few weeks back — he was sitting right in front of me (but I didn’t bother him).

Agreed. That’s the whole point of the Stoute letter. CBS & the Grams feature the popular artists (M&M, Rhihanna) and lead the public to think they’re going to win. The Grams know who the winners are before hand. The Grams should also represent “cutting edge” not just the “safe” artists. I was happy for Esperanza, and I looked her up on goog and she’s very popular and very talented. But Lady A. winning 5 awards including song of the year? I’m sorry. That’s being “safe”.

  • suenigma

I’d LOVE it if Kris got it, but I doubt that he would. Other Idols I could see possibly getting it would be Cook, Kelly, Adam or Jordin.

If you think about it from a practical point of view, Adam, Alllison, Jordin and Kris don’t have anything to sell right now, as far as we know (Adam does have the DVD, but I think that is more of a Niche thing, TBH). The potential profit/benefit for 19M is mitigated right away by that fact, whereas Cook and Kelly both have imminent albums releases, we hope. Also, there is the fact that Cook hinted that he was recording a surpise or treat to be hopefully seen on TV this week. Obviously it is not a lock, but taking all of this into consideration, I think that he is the most logical candidate.

I can recognize Rhihanna’s voice from the first note, even on a brand new song. Usually, the DJ has to inform me that I’m listening to Jordin. Her voice is just not distinctive to me at all. Plus, she bores me to tears.

I’m assuming there’s a really strong chance that the AI boot song will go to one of UMG’s pet projects who may have no prior association with Idol. I’d like it though, if it were one of the former Idols. Always nice to keep it in the family. Kelly, Cook, Adam or Kris would be my top choices – not that anyone is asking me.

BTW, it’s not crazy to think that Cook’s special song could be for the NCAA tournament — that isn’t all that far away — the first games are on March 15

The timing is a bit off (Cook said it would probably surface on TV this week), but this is certainly plausible. Two years ago the ACC and SEC used “Heroes” as the theme song for their conference tournaments, which obviously start even earlier than the big dance. Dave and the band were featured in video interviews between games and he song was used in promos, montages, and leadouts to commercial breaks. It could very well be something similar this year.

I still think the timing and the short turnaround suggest Idol, though I’m not sure the tone of the tweets say “boot song.” Since the semis are only one week this season (can I kvetch once more about how much I DESPISE the 24>12/13 format?), it makes sense that they would only have one boot song for the season announced either this week or next week. I do think the in-studio tweets suggest a cover or a song not written by Cook (e.g. @St3vetHH You’ll hear it soon! Great track for him.), which could make sense for another standalone single (Jumpin’ Jack Flash) or the boot song. Would they really pull Squire in to produce if it’s just a cover of a classic Elvis or Beatles song for iTunes release though?

Sorry cook fans I’m sure the boot song will be a WTF moment just like when we heard Will Young! TPTB will no doubt f this up.

LOL! I’ve been lurking and haven’t yet read all of the posts, so this may not be original thought, but… I’d, personally (because I’m really, really biased AND because it would be for a greater good) love to see Adam’s new amped-up version of “Aftermath” be the boot song. It would help promote a former popular contestant while at the same time benefiting an amazing cause.

  • tripp_ncwy

Would it really benefit Cook to have the boot song if it is not an album cut? With the boot song, the artist would get an idol performance slot. Would you want to trade a performance slot to sing the boot song instead of a slot to perform your own single? Carrie has performed multiple times in a season but she is in a league of her own when it comes to AI.

  • suenigma

    girlygirl:
I don’t know if the boot song gives the artist a big boost in terms of overall sales…I always thought it just gives them a single for people to buy. so that would work for any artist, not just someone who has something else to promote.

But with Cook everytime that he has performed on AI his album has received a pretty big boost too, so that could translate into his new album getting a boost too, when it is released, hopefully soon.

SpenserJ: If it were that, you’d start hearing it once the TV advertisements started. That’s usually a while before the actual games start. They hype that sports stuff for weeks.

Excellent point! Maybe that is what he meant by “should” hear it on TV this week. Could be part of a commercial – no exact date known. You may very well be correct Girlygirl. In which case, I don’t see the boot song going to anybody but Kelly or a non-AI related UMG artist, unfortunately.

  • suenigma

Terri – LOL! Hey now, there’s another awesome idea! I would love that almost as much as an Allison/Cook duet!

  • luly

I hope that the boot song will go to one of the previous idol alumni.

  • tinawina

love to see Adam’s new amped-up version of “Aftermath” be the boot song.

LOL! I don’t know why that sentence struck me funny.

    The current list of 19 projects;

I don’t think they’ve updated that site or list since 2009.

Yeah, because I don’t think Jordin is with 19 at this point. I seem to recall that she’s not.

And I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I can’t help it. I really do hope that Cook’s project is the boot song. Because I do think the boot song for the show, should come from one of it’s alumni, and now would be a great time for Cook to have it. I would say Kelly, but she’s not managed by 19, and I just don’t see her wanting to do the boot song for the show at this point.

But I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

  • saga

What non-idol artists are managed by 19? I know of Orianthi. I was thinking maybe we’ll see idol songs on x factor?

  • ladymadonna

I think the hope would be that getting the boot song would allow for two performance slots – one earlier in the season to promote the new single, one at Top 2 to perform the boot song. The boot song could also be included as a bonus track even if it’s not a cut from the album proper. Carrie and Daughtry both appeared on Idol twice the year they did the boot song – Daughtry did WAN on IGB in S6 and Carrie performed her single w/Randy Travis early in the finals S8. Cook has been invited back for two slots each year since his win (3 times in S9 if you count the finale where he was double-booked), so I don’t think appearing twice is out of the question.

Of course the UMG connection throws a spanner into the works this season so what has happened in past years is not necessarily germane in S10. I could easily see it going to a Universal artist. Cook’s as good a candidate as any but who knows what direction they’ll go in. I never would have called Will Young last year, that’s for sure.

  • lorismile

Somehow I think the reaction is going to get nuts if Adam gets the Idol boot song. Somehow I don’t see him getting it but I have no idea how these things work.

  • koshka

TPTB will probably give us someone like Beiber and really cause an AI meltdown.

  • Trina

My fear with any Idol alum getting the song is the inevitable fanwars. The one silver lining about the crappy song last year was it kept all the fans neutral lol

  • tls62

I loved Aerosmith in their prime, but do we really want to hear them live on the Idol Stage now?

You betcha! Steven Tyler is the only reason a lot of people are watching Idol this year. Aerosmith is still selling out arenas. I’d much rather see them on the stage than a last ditch attempt to save some failing Idol. Every contestant to hit that Idol stage could learn something from Aerosmith who’s had 40 years of success.

I would love for Adam to get the boot song, but I really think it’s going to be someone on the Universal label.

  • Mel1

After all the uproar over Adam mentoring last year, I don’t think Adam will get the boot song. I would love for a Steven Tyler boot song, but I don’t think that will happen either. Will they have a boot song this week, or do they wait for the top 12/10?

  • sr4mjc

Are the lyrics boot friendly? And its for charity? That could work, that’s what they did with Carrie’s single

I think they are, especially if they play certain parts of the song. But I’m not sure how a dancy song works for a boot? hmm. I guess he could perform a dancy song on Idol, IIHY was dancy and he did it on other shows.

When Ely was answering twitter questions about the new version someone asked if it was the boot song, he said that would be awesome but it didn’t sound like it was in the works. He deleted all his tweets that night, I don’t think he was supposed to be talking about the new version.

I don’t see it going to Adam, I’d put my money on Cookie or Kelly or UMG.

I don’t think there would be any fanwars or complaints if Cook got the boot song. He seem to be the next one in line among the Idol winners, who deserve a chance to do this song. I certainly would be happy if he got it.

  • soverymel

I guess maybe Aftermath is “boot friendly” (LOL) and if you edited it for the lines with the most tearjerky potential, the lyrics could fit. At least in its acoustic form:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRDBa8uP0z4

However I can’t see how it would work at all as the promised upcoming dance pop remix? It makes me srsly LOL just thinking about it. Maybe I just don’t have enough imagination.

I do agree that the timing of his album drop and his 1st album success and the hint he dropped about TV soon make Cook a much more likely choice for the boot song.

  • Teri63

Are the lyrics boot friendly? And its for charity? That could work, that’s what they did with Carrie’s single. :D

I think so. The lyrics are about overcoming adversity or rising above the negatives, and being booted off of Idol is certainly a negative. I just remember that this song came up among Adam fanatics like me last year as a potential cool choice for a boot song. The only drawback I could see at the time was that it might be too slow in tempo for a short segment following each boot. But if he’s speeding it up… I, of course, haven’t heard how it’s going to sound once it’s altered, but in theory it should work and help others at the same time.

  • koshka

sr4mjc – I don’t see it either (or likely) however the acoustic version would work very well. With that all said, I’m quite positive that the boot song will be a surprise to all of us.

  • Truthiness

My fear with any Idol alum getting the song is the inevitable fanwars. The one silver lining about the crappy song last year was it kept all the fans neutral lol

I know fanwars can start about every and anything, and do. But I think that someone like David, or Jordin, seem to me that they’re pretty safe choices/wouldn’t cause too many fan skirmishes. Though I admit, my preference would be for Cookie to do it over Jordin ;) I would totally be cool with a choice like Jordin instead. Just as long as it’s an AI alumn, and not someone not of the American AI family. But that’s my my mileage.

  • Mel1

I would be ok with anyone to get the boot song. Cook, Kris, Jordin, even Clay. Isn’t Clay on the outs with AI, tho?

  • gangreen29

I want the boot song to go to Katharine so everyone will whine about it lol.

You are probably right. I don’t think it’s ever been what we thought it would be. But its still fun to guess! Watch it be a Beckham. Heh.

  • Mel1

Has Jennifer had an arena tour yet? Because Christina’s last album didn’t go so well, she may need a little reinforcement. So if Jennifer is untested for a big venue, the two might want to pair up. I’d go see them. I wanted to see Christina last year, but her tour was cancelled.

Wow, could be the boot song after all! Or it could be something else special planned for AI.

Is there anything scheduled for Thursday March 3rd sports wise? If not then Cookie got the boot! :)

  • Trina

    Oh em gee :o

The flailing on my Twitter feed is hysterical!

  • LaraC

Yeah, he keeps referring to it as “extra treat” which makes me think its a one time smaller thing, not the whole season elimination song.

  • tinawina

Yeah, I’m still thinking its a one week thing. The real boot song starts the following week…. lets see if he lands that one.

Still, any new Cookie is fine by me! Bring on the Top 12 boot song (or Top 12 celebration song! – whatever) Yay!

  • karenc

    Tinawina:

But I think the past couple of years, in particular when Carrie did Home Sweet Home, they introduced the song the week before, at the first elimination. They played a video, and then I think they even released it on itunes. The video was a montage of contestants, I think the ones that didn’t make it.

Even so, it does sound like something for AI. The other possibility is that I think Kris did Let it Be as a charity single during the semifinals, but that was a live performance.

  • Joyed

    Top 12 celebration song!

hmm, that is an interesting thought – can’t wait to find out.

I think the true treat for me is just hearing new music:) Of course, the trick is that I have to wait another week :p

  • sma11ie

I kind of completely agree with this, which is why I’m a bit “bivalent” (TM Jacob of TWOP) about the prospect of David getting the boot song. Of course I know he could always get more than one performance slot on AI, but still, I’m not totally convinced a boot song is the best thing EVAH for Cook and his next album, etc. Which is why I’m not particularly rooting for the “surprise” being the boot song, or a sports thing, or any other thing. I’m just in wait-and-see mode and trying not to have expectations at this point, and hopefully I will be happy with whatever the surprise is.

ETA: LMAO, I should’ve checked Twitter before posting this! TPTB is pretty much Idol-ese, so I guess we know it’s AI on 3/3!

  • tinawina

But I think the past couple of years, in particular when Carrie did Home Sweet Home, they introduced the song the week before, at the first elimination. Wow. Then… I might have to actually believe it. :D ***Slowly letting myself be won over*** LOL

  • Mel1

Looks like Adam is ready for more tats. I bet it has something to do with his Glam Nation tour. He seems to tat what’s going on in his life, and not just some tat that he just “likes”.

  • cookbunny

He used the term “TPTB,” there’s only ONE semi-final going straight to the finals, March 3rd is the first elimination day when the votes cut from 24 to 12, AND “an extra treat” doesn’t necessarily mean a one-shot deal. It could mean an extra song in addition to the album.

Screw it, I’m gonna keep my hopes up! (walks off whistling…”Not gonna come down, down off of these clouds…”)

  • Mel1

Could it also be David is premiering his single?

  • Trina

Why would they use a one week boot song when its the right timing for the Top 12/13 to be announced? I think his “extra treat” wording is being taken too literally. The BIG thing fans want is the album. The boot song (especially a cover or something) is an extra treat.

  • tinawina

Screw it, I’m gonna keep my hopes up! (walks off whistling…”Not gonna come down, down off of these clouds…”)

I think I’m starting to drift over to the light side with you. LMAO.

Why would they use a one week boot song when its the right timing for the Top 12/13 to be announced?

Because on some years they didn’t debut it until the first elimination on Top 12 results night, and used something else in the semis.

But like I said… I think I have been convinced that this is it. :D

It could mean an extra song in addition to the album.

It could also mean that it gets put on the album as a bonus song. At least that’s one way to link this Idol “treat” to the album launch in some form. Yeah, I don’t know if it will do any good, considering how BSC a handful of fans can be. I guess this latest round was triggered by his vacation with Sauli? But good for Adam in defending Tommy and sticking up for his right to have the personal life HE wants — not the one a few of his fans want him to have.

Agreed. And I suspect the ones it’s directed at will totally miss the point.

But I’m still going to be crying tears of “I wish my Idol had your Idol’s problems” if the boot song is announced as Cook’s first single off DCTR2. Because I still want a Cook-written single, dammit!

If this “extra” song is a cover — as “great track for him” hints, though I wouldn’t be shocked by distracting equivocation at this point — releasing it as the first single would dramatically undermine the entire “Cook as singer/songwriter involved in every stage of his album” message that’s been consistent throughout the teasers.

Were that to happen, I’d feel justified in experiencing (fleeting) professional rage at a poorly designed and deceptive marketing campaign (I’m also rather cranky about the new Gap logo). But I’d also be extremely surprised: an awful lot of time and effort (and by implication, money) has gone into promoting this album as an old-style super-authentic rock album. Presumably, RCA means it.

  • SpenserJ

Agreed. And I suspect the ones it’s directed at will totally miss the point.

I cannot imagine that a lunatic who has the balls to tweet a stranger about their personal life, would ever get the message that they were way out of line. Some people are just too nuts to reason with.

ESCtoday.com: Jedward enter the Irish top 50 singles chart (Lipstick #2; Falling #44)

This year’s Irish Eurovision entry Lipstick performed by Jedward has just entered the official Irish top 50 singles chart at number 2. The song was released by Universal as a CD single in Ireland and the United Kingdom today. Also, the runner-up of the Irish national final, Falling performed by Nikki Kavanagh has entered the chart at number 44.

Jedward’s growing popularity in Ireland is underlined by the latest edition of the official Irish top 50 singles chart provided by IRMA. Lipstick entered the chart at number 2 and is expected to top next week’s tables. The official CD single was released today by Universal in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Also, Nikki Kavanagh’s Eurovision bid entitled Falling peaked number 44 in its first week on the chart. The single is expected to be released by MRP in Ireland this week.

So this week Jedward are #2 behind Lady Gaga, but next week physical release will get them to #1? Who would have thought?

I got to see Allison sing live tonight!!! I went to Monte Pittman’s concert and he brought her out for the encore. She did a killer cover of Madonna’s “Crazy for You”!! I didn’t take video, but lots of people did, so it should pop up on YT.

PS – Unless Adam was hiding, he wasn’t at the show. Tommy was there, playing bass. The concert was really really good. You can forget what a great guitarist Monte is. His vocals are not great, but it was still a really fun gig.

I can’t wait to hear the new music from Kris, it’s wonderful to see that he is so excited about it.

Kris & his tv viewing habits, Ninja Turtles, Boy Meets World and now Heroes.

    @KrisAllen
#Is it sad that when I watch Heroes I actually think I have super powers?

    Then there is Jim.
    @jambajim
#KrisAllen It’s just sad that u are watching Heroes period. That show was good for about 5 minutes. Priorities! Get some Everwood DVDs STAT!

And Jambajim- Heroes was FANTASTIC – the best show EVAH for one full season, lol. It’s right up there with the one full season of Freaks And Geeks.
