Idol Headlines for 02/13/12

oh for the love of all that is holy please don’t do an entire round of Whitney on idol. 

Kat McPhee was just on Live with Kelly (Randy is the co-host).  They showed a brief clip of her made up as “Marilyn” auditioning on Smash, and Kat says that tonight’s episode will reveal who gets the part in the musical.  She was asked about Whitney by Kelly and said that on the request of Clive Davis, she sang a “Bodyguard” medley for Whitney at a charity event a few years ago.

I remember Kat did Whitney’s “I have Nothing” on Idol and knocked it out of the park only to be slammed by Simon for the performance.  It’s the only time I can recall Simon coming back the next night and apologizing and admitting he was wrong. 

Kat was on the 4th hour of “Today” with Hoda and Kathy Lee and they showed an extended clip of her in a song/dance number in Smash.

David Foster and Andrea Bocelli were acting as mentors and I think this was where David began his association with Kat.  David is a tool though.  lol

Time #2: Finale of Season 7, Cowell apologizes to David Cook for proclaiming the previous night that David Archuleta had “knocked him out” in all three performances.  

This.  A Whitney night just has disaster written all over it.

Singing Whitney would separate the real talent from the others. She has so many amazing songs to chose from.

yeah I remember that but I think that was more to save face because he knew Cook had won at that point and he didn’t want to look like a jackass.  With Kat it was a genuine “I was wrong” apology with no hidden agenda to save face. 

Thanks for the clip Fuzzywuzzy. I voted for her that season, but I had forgotten how really good she was then! I hope Smash becomes a huge hit for her!

You could be right. I’m sure there may have been hints. But, whose to say what’s in Cowell’s head. I just recall him looking awfully happy and almost relieved when Cook’s name was announced as the winner. In any event, as time passes, his “memory” seems to fade and he touts himself as knowing how everything was going to work out and how he was right.

I saw Adam tweeted Megan Hilty his congrats about “Smash” and how he was hooked on the show. I guess they worked in “Wicked” together?

Can’t believe what he has accomplished in such a short time over there.  I guess the Filipinos will get to see some very large billboards of David in the Bench ads.  There was a huge crowd at the signing at the pre-purchasing of the CD he has recorded over there.  People said he stayed long after he was scheduled to stay to sign all of the purchased inlays.  Fans will show their receipt and inlay and get their CD when it comes out supposedly the first part of April.  Hope that we can purchase it here in the US.

Journey, I love the picture of David A they used at the “pre-purchasing” signing for his new CD. I find that the photos of him in Asia always seem to make him like more mature and adult. I do wonder when he had time for the CD photoshoot.

I noticed on the picture from the signing that Sony Music is releasing the OPM CD. That is great for distribution in Asia but I wonder what that means for North America. Pretty sure Sony Asia is not allowed to release stuff in North America. I don’t see Jive or RCA releasing an OPM CD. Hopefully Sony Asia can find a distributor in North America.

I’m glad to see the rumors of David endorsing a clothing line were true. I can’t wait to see the pics of the photo shoot. It would be awesome if there were billboards of David’s ads. I saw the Bruno Mars ones. It would be great if they had David do something similar. Bruno also had commercials.

Thanks for posting the music video for Nandito Ako. I think I am going to have fun watching this show.

Just the other day I got into a debate with a fellow about that S7 finale and Simon’s actions.  I dont know why he backpedaled and if he was sincere or not, but if there was ever any doubt he wanted DC winning just look at the professional pictures that were taken that winning night and dig up his interview from Ryan’s show from the next day. Ryan even teased him about being giddy over the results.

Adam is at Fuse today filming Fuse Top 100 Sexy Beats.  I believe it will air on Wednesday, the 15th, at 8:00 PM:

It was obvious Simon wanted Cook to win. Before the finale he went around on talk shows promoting Cook and insulting David A.

I am glad that the rumors of David endorsing a clothing line were true. The information is also up on his website.  I saw the billboards and commercials that Bruno Mars did for Bench.  It would be awesome if David had billboards up as well.  I liked the photo shoot they did with Bruno. 

Idol should stay far far away from a Whitney theme…especially with this years crop of contestants

Please no Whitney night no no no bad idea.

I’m a brand new Kris fan too!  I don’t know how I didn’t notice how good he was before.  Probably because I was obsessed with Adam that season!

I always liked Kris as a person, but wasn’t impressed by his debut album. His sophomore album on the other hand has me totally fangirling. The Mint show was so good!

Zorro is Kris’ dog.

If Zorro is on the album cover I will not be held responsible for my actions…..I’m not even kidding. With Kris you never know-he would probably leave himself out totally and just have Zorro on there! Hopefully RCA will squash that idea quickly.

I’m a brand new Kris fan, so bear with me. Who’s Zorro?

Zorro is Kris and Katy’s dog.  I am of the opinion that unless you’re three dog night, snoop dog or some other artist identified as dog or with a dog you should not have a dog on your album cover.  Kris and Zorro on on the cover together would make it look like a children’s album.  I’ll never fully understand Kris’ or his managements lack of marketing on what many view as his hottness.  Personally he does nothing for me (too short) but he’s got a nice body and his face is cute so obviously they could be playing that up a bit more.

Oh no, no no…they can’t seriously be considering putting a dog on the cover, can they?

I think that a photo that makes him look like a nerd is fine, because there are a lot of very popular and successful so called nerds in music, John Mayer and Jason Mraz to just name two.  I would like for them to stay away from any Kris and Zorro photos that make him look like they are trying to  appeal to children, this isn’t Kidz Bop, or a demo that’s much older than what should be his core demographic of 16-40 year old somethings.  That’s not a knock and the 50 and up crowd who like Kris, I’m just saying that they need a picture that makes it clear that his music is young, mainstream, and current.  And they need to stay away from any photos that can be labeled as “American Idol” Kris Allen.  They need to show that he’s grown into more than just someone who won a television talent show. 

There’s a wide range of shots that can include Zorro that could work,  including ones that showoff Kris’ sex appeal.  It just depends on the setup.

Does 19M just consist of two people now?  It makes sense, since Kris and Lee seem to be the only ones left with the company, who aren’t represented by some other management firm.  I don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes, and change is hard, but I hope that Kris gives a great deal of consideration to going to another firm, when his contract with 19 expires.

Hopefully RCA and 19 have more sense than to put him on the cover. It’s nice that Kris loves his dog tat much, but c’mon. 

I don’t think any cover with a dog on it works. But I also think RCA is smart enough to know that.

IMO, it appears to me that Katy & Zorro are taking photos for some type of Bio photo spread and not for the album cover.

Call me silly, and obviously in the minority, but I think Kris including Zorro is a great idea. I can think of a ton of great shots they could do. Yay for Katy being in on this shoot too.

When Kris first mentioned he’d like to have Zorro, the first thing that came to mind was the old Gramophone ‘His Master’s Voice’ label. Kris and Grammy’s go well together for me.

Back in the early 80′s, Rick Springfield used his dog on two of his album covers… Working Class Dog and Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet.  Both were on RCA, too. 

Van Morrison used his dog with him on a cover too. It didn’t kill his career.

I agree with you Miz, as long as Kris is on the cover with Zorro, I don’t care, even though I think inside the album cover would be a better idea, but I sure don’t buy the album because of the cover, even though I’M sure a lot of people do. Who know’s maybe some people will see Zorro on the cover and decide WOW what a cute dog, if this dog is so cute the guy singing can’t be to bad. Just being silly about that part but the rest am serious about. Zorro is like Kris’s baby so of course he wants to show him off, and I’ve seen a lot of worst covers on an album than a dog being on it.

yeah but the album was called Farmer’s Daughter and the cover was Crystal outside some farm, so having a dog on the cover fit into that whole theme they were going for. :)

Kris looks good but IMO that style does not connect with his new songs at all :/ I’d love to see something similar to what he wears for his shows.

I was negative on the Zorro idea when Kris mentioned it.  Esp. since he said he doesn’t like to pose, or something like that. Which made me think he would avoid pictures of himself. But that’s unlikely, since they do want to sell albums. And the photo of him taking a break shows him looking good and obviously dressed and groomed for a photo shoot.

So now I think they probably have a cool concept in mind, and good ideas for publicity, image-building, etc. He said he had some ideas, and I think most of the time he has pretty cool ideas. After all, he knows who he is more than anybody else does. His previous album art was great but also left out a lot of what makes Kris who he is. I’m pretty sure us fans are going to like the concept when we see it.

I refuse to get sucked into all of the lurid details about Whitney’s death. I mourned on the evening of the Grammys and all day up until the awards show. It may sound harsh, but I am ready to move on. 

You’re right about Kris’ cool ideas :) I hope he has his say about album cover and press photos – I don’t mind that much what pics they will use in the booklet.

For years and years we’ve been complaining about boring Idol album covers. Head shot. Head shot. Head shot. Head shot. Head shot. Sometimes they look serene. Sometimes they look pensive. Sometimes they look like they are about to have their brains eaten by aliens. Every once in a while, there is a hint of something else interesting in the scene, but the head shot dominates.

So, here is Kris talking about including his dog. Could be something different than a head shot. Maybe Kris and Katy are playing poker with the dog. Maybe Kris is being all hipster and re-creating the cover of “Awkward Family Pet Photos”. Maybe it’s just the dog. At least it would be something different to complain about.

But, this is RCA we are talking about. They could take 99 awesome pictures of the dog and one crappy head shot of Kris and they’d go with the head shot. Labels are terrified that we won’t know who the album is from so we get the artist’s name in big fonts and a head shot. Gone are the days when we would get the Nirvana baby or Depeche Mode’s lady harvesting wheat with a scythe cover. Sure, Bruno Mars got something other than a head shot, but he’s Bruno.

Crystal was with Jive at the time, not RCA.  

Crystal’s album cover told a story.  I’d love it if Kris’ did the same, just not a similar story, since Crystal’s album really highlighted that she is a folk artist, with strong country ties.  You really knew what type of music to expect by looking at her album.

110% no to Whitney Houston night on Idol.  10 or 12+ people, butchering the heck out of the high notes? The country or rock guys going over her songs with a fine tooth comb to come up with anything that would work? Um no.

Maybe on a results show with a few Idol alums, Jordin, Carrie or even one of the guys like Adam, but not for the freshman class.

Glee has enough talent, a Whitney/Bobby episode could work.

Yay for Kris photo shoot day!! Getting closer and closer to the single release. Though at this point I’m just as excited about the new photos as I am for the new music. I’m a bit of a photography spaz(No I’m not a pro photographer by any means.)so throw Idols in to the mix and my spazing goes through the roof. lol Speaking of which. I hope the Idol photographers go back to taking photos of the Top 24 in natural environments. Not empty space.

So excited to see where his next album shoot will go. His last one was wonderful, and while I do like what was used for his debut album’s cover I’m still annoyed about that mirror shot not getting used instead. Or you know…Being used for much of anything. I know I’m not the only one who would have bought a poster and/or t-shirt featuring that image. Wish fans had more of a say in merch creation in general. :/

Anyway…It’s sweet of Kris to want to include his family members in his photo shoot. Says a lot about him. Those family shots will probably end up in the booklet, but if Kris and Zorro both make the album cover there are ways to make the shot look unique. Since there’s a chance this shoot will take place outdoors a simple shot of Kris walking with Zorro could end up looking really cool depending on how the shot is treated. I would prefer to see a mix of seriousness and lightheartedness for this cover and for the shoot in general. Capturing Kris’s wonderful personality on camera really shouldn’t be difficult.

I don’t see a problem including Zorro in the photo shoot and even for the album cover (as long as it’s not just a head shot of the dog, LOL). To me the dog is no different then any other “prop” used in a photo. A couch, a chair, a rocker, a guitar…..done right it will be nice. Remember that photo of Kris sitting on a bathroom floor near a sink. It was a great shot. Who would’ve thought to pose Kris with a sink??? OMG Those silly photographers. Kris loves his dog, it’s part of who he is. I don’t think the cover on it’s own is really that big of a deal. Remember how much hate went towards the cover of Adam’s debut cd???? It still sold.

ETA maybe I’m confusing pictures and I’m thinking of the one of his face reflected in a bathroom mirror but I think my point still stands.  

I think there’s a picture from the same shoot, where he’s sitting on the floor by a radiator.  It’s an incredibly good picture.   

 Ahh I bet your right. I did some surfing to see if I could find it but didn’t. Regardless I think Kris will look good for this album cover and any other press  stuff they put together.

Now this is an excellent idea. I listened to all of the Mint songs (first time I’ve ever really concentrated on a whole slew of Kris songs) and “Better With You” is the most amazing, wonderful tribute to his wife. I wish that would be the first single and yes, ITA, to make this the theme of the cover art would be fantastic.

While in theory I agree with you… the problem is is that most of the idols haven’t made it yet and have little name recognition outside the bubble. So yes, they need a head shot – and not a profile shot. Kris and everyone else whose name is not Kelly, Carrie or Daughtry need to fight for some end cap space and “face time”. So while I’d love to see something different its not a rational decision IMO. 

I can’t fathom why anyone would think it would be a good idea to put Katy or Zorro on the cover. I’m fine with Kris being married and I wish him the best, but the whole thing could come off as really cheesy.

Also, Kris is young and ridiculously good looking. It’s a really good selling point. Mr. Happy Family Guy just isn’t going to sell as well even though that may be what is.
