The GRAMMY Pre-Telecast Ceremony comes into its own as a major stand-alone event – The annual GRAMMY Awards telecast is known as Music’s Biggest Night, but, in the hours leading up to the telecast, music enjoys a pretty big day as well. This year, approximately 70 of the 78 GRAMMY categories will be announced at the Pre-Telecast Ceremony on Feb. 12, with the final categories showcased on the CBS telecast. While there’s no denying the unique excitement that’s part of every GRAMMY broadcast, the Pre-Telecast has come into its own as a major stand-alone event with a distinctive character, an expanding audience, GRAMMY-style live performances, and, of course, no commercial interruptions. Those not lucky enough to be a nominee (or a close friend of a nominee) can still see the event streamed live online via GRAMMY Live, beginning at 1 p.m. PST. – Read more at Grammy.com

And there, Yahoo! caught up with him to talk fashion faux pas (he seems to regret wearing a bolo tie to the 2010 Grammys) and his collaboration with Grammy darling Bruno Mars (the man who ironically beat him out for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at last year’s Grammys). And yes, he addresses the gossip out there about his possible future collaborations with Queen, too:  (Adam will be at tonight’s Clive Davis party, he’s working on a dance song with Bruno Mars, confirms he will sing with Queen this year) – See the Video at Yahoo.com

Behind-The-Scenes Grammy Blog #1 – On Wednesday as part of the GRAMMY Camp Media Team, I attended two GRAMMY Week events in Los Angeles, GRAMMY Camp – Basic Training in the morning, and GRAMMY in the Schools Live! in the evening. Jam was joined by “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” music director Rickey Minor, singer/songwriter and “American Idol” contestant Didi Benami, and songwriter and producer Evan Bogart, among others. Several sessions featured unique participation by both panelists and students. One, which featured an array of music directors, producers, and instrumentalists, concluded with a rousing performance of singer/songwriter and “American Idol” contestant Lacey Brown’s hit “Let It Go.” Another on music production included a contest to find the most talented singer in the room. Lots of shouting and cheering ensued.  – Read more at Cambio

Possibly not anymore, Whitney Houston was just announced to be have died and Clive was super close to her.

Breaking News:Pop music vocalist, film star Whitney Houston dies at age 48 on.today.com/A3Cy6J

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yeah, since I’m not an intense fan, I don’t watch or listen to every single interview or performance that Adam (or Kelly) gives.  I really just want to know when new music is released so I can see what music I like and buy that.  lol

  • koshka

Sometimes it really is that simple. :)

  • fuzzywuzzy

Wait… so Adam’s “collaboration” with Bruno is a duet?  Really?  When did he divulge this information?  I’m confused again.  lol

    ETA: Nevermind. lol

  • Anonymous

That’s horrible news about Whitney Houston. I can’t believe this happened one day before the Grammys. Wow.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Woah!  That’s a real shock!  No cause of death reported yet.  RIP Whitney.

  • Moria Polonius

Hahaha, definitely. I was so relieved when Adam changed his tune and stopped saying that the album would be like WWFM and IIHY.

One thing makes me wonder: Adam’s been saying many times that during the tour he learned who his fans were and factored that into the overall album. I really wish he’d elaborate on that because I believe he also said that he had been planning to go pop/rock route like the radio singles because that’s what he had thought his fans wanted from him.  So what made him change his mind about his fanbase, aside from “be true to yourself” stuff that might have come from Pharell Williams? Did he realize that it’s more diverse than he originally thought and that he would cater to the portion he identifies with the most, or did he come to the conclusion that WWFM and IIHY weren’t actually the fanbase’s most favorite ones…?

Lol, I wish I could interview him personally with these burning questions.

One day after she performed for the first time in a long while too. Whitney performed at a party last night.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to guess that after all this talk about the party, Clive Davis will probably cancel it. He was a big friend of her’s.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I agree all this discussion is moot. The important thing is for her family and friends to do what they need to do, and Clive was extremely close to her. I hope he (and everyone else close to her) takes any and all the time they need in the face of this tragedy.

I would love to sit in with you on that interview….LOL

I remember him saying early on in the writing when his directions starting to change that he wanted not to sing songs he thought his fans wanted so much but concentrate on more what he wanted.  He still wanted to please his fans but still not go that same route and I am glad he changed.

Twitter is reporting that the Clive’s Grammy party is cancelled.

  • DragonFly

Just taking one line of defense for Nikki & Paul McDonald–she did record a duet with him–it was feat. here.  Can’t say she didn’t go down to the studio w/him.

  • musicality

Who is Paul’s wife? Never heard of her. Front row at fashion week is not too shabby. You need pull to get that.

Getting an invite to Clives’ party is huge. As several news sources have reported it’s the must have invite.

I was on twitter and Shirley Halperin (and several others) reported that Adam Lambert and Britney Spears sat together for the night.

I guess fans in the bubble in the last few years expect the
Idols to be 100% involved in making new material and not just recording the
    vocals.

Not just in the idol bubble, it depends on the type of artist. A
singer-songwriter would be expected to be more involved no matter if they are
from Idol or not. Finding singles for someone would occur if the artist wasn’t writing their own material and the turnaround probably would be faster for this type of artist.

What I think does, or has, hurt the Idols the past few years is not enough
singles were released from the debut albums even though the albums or other singles were successful. The time that the idols have taken for their next album the next few years is about the same as it was for other artists who write
their own material (2-3 years). And this includes KAty Perry, Lady Gaga, and
Adele, who had successful second albums, who all had successful albums in 2011
when their debuts came out in 2008.

The other thing I wonder about is that normally artists work with A&R
before their albums come out. WIth the Idols, it’s only a few months for the
debut album, and maybe they are working on this more on the second albums.

I do think in recent years that one reason that the second albums are taking
longer is so that they could work on what direction they truly want to go in
with their music. And there is evidence that RCA has supported this, because of
who they are working with and cowriting with on the albums.

It’s so easy to sit here and analyze someone elses’ life/career but we aren’t in their heads and hearts. So who knows what Paul is thinking (or any of the others). Maybe he wants a break, maybe he wants people to forget he was on AI, maybe he’s contemplating a career change and doing something besides music. Maybe spending time savoring his marriage is more important to him right now (life can be short). Who knows? For me whether or not it makes sense I have to believe that they have their reasons for doing what they do.

If someone just wants to be a singer and sing songs other people write then more power to them, there is nothing wrong with that. But if someone prefers to actually create the music they sing/perform out of their own heads or collaboratively because they have something they want to say, then they should do that. If that takes longer then so be it. If they are great live performers and they have fans who will pay to see them then they should tour. If you have fans all over the world it will take longer to tour all those places. I think besides the money to be earned there are a lot of positive intangibles that touring provides. Different life experiences and cultures to explore. Learning how it feels to perform their music live and see fan reactions to different songs and visual cues. All of that comes back into finding/creating the next thing the artist may want to say with new music.

I can’t see A&R people spending a lot of time/effort finding a singer new songs to sing until they see how the debut album is selling. If the album/singles sell well then the label will invest time/money into a second album. Seems to me there will always be a time lag waiting to see how released music is received before beginning the next project.

    But YMMV
