The warm and fuzzies followed Kelly Clarkson last night as she arrived in San Antonio last night for her next gig. Her band and crew made her a sweet sign. See it Here. Right after the game, Kelly tweeted, “Guess what ….I’ve never been more nervous in my life than singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl tonight ….wow that was almost not fun I was so nervous! Fun night overall though! Thank you everybody for all of the nice things you’re saying about my performance! I really appreciate it”

Adam Lambert: ‘My new album contains f**k you songs’ – Adam Lambert has revealed that he has included a collection of “f**k you” songs on his new album. The singer will release his second studio LP Trespassing later this year, following his new single ‘Better Than I Know Myself’. However, Lambert admitted that he talks about a range of controversial topics on the record, including cruising for sex and celebrating his insanity.
He told the Daily Star: “There are songs on the album about me rebelling against society and saying, ‘F**k you, I’ll do what I want’. “‘Cuckoo’ is about me acknowledging I’m insane and celebrating that fact. And ‘Shady’ is a sleazy, disco funk about cruising for sex, so it will be interesting to see how Middle America interprets that.” – Read more at Digital Spy

Who is the worst dressed dude on ‘American Idol’? – The men of “American Idol” – that would be Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest – earn big bucks questioning superstar hopefuls. I love me some Kelly, but half of her catalog is ‘screw what everyone thinks, I’m doing it my way’ songs. Same attitude, same subject.

Unless Adam has added a verse to Trespassing, the song he’s referencing, he doesn’t actually sing Fuck You. It’s an I’m doing it my way song. Props to both!

Early ratings for The Voice – they are CRUSHING.

    http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/02/06/early-ratings-the-voice-27-higher-than-last-years-post-super-bowl-glee/118736/

19.4/33. No hard numbers, but I would guess somewhere between 30 and 45 million (although it has a much younger audience than Idol so higher ratings don’t necessarily mean more viewers).

That KILLS Idol’s episodes this season – like by a factor of 3.

Next question: how much of that will turn out at 8 tonight? Even holding half of that means Idol falls behind…

    Here is the tvbythenumbers blurb:

    via NBC press notes:
The second season premiere of “The Voice” averaged a 19.4/33
in metered-market household figures from 10:15-11:30 p.m. ET, up 120
percent versus the biggest metered-market household rating for “The
Voice” last season (8.8/14 on May 31, 2011).  Last season, “The
    Voice” debuted with a 7.5/12 on April 26, 2011 in metered-market
households and the series averaged a 7.6/12.  Time zone-adjusted
national ratings for last night’s telecast of “The Voice” are due from
    Nielsen later today

“The Voice” is up 27 percent in metered-market households versus last year’s 15.3/27 for Fox’s post-Super Bowl telecast of “Glee.”

The Voice has had killer promo. And they are hitting the right demographic. I still don’t think the singers who come off this show are going to do anything commercially, but they aren’t hiding the fact that the real competition is between the judges. When the judges talk about who is going to win they aren’t referring to the contestants.

Here are last night’s early ratings for the Super Bowl.

We’ll have to wait for time zone adjusted fast nationals to know if it broke viewing records. But with the metered market overnights being (very) slightly lower than last year but fueled by the #1 market (i.e. last year’s game might have had more appeal for middle America), I’m not betting on record viewers despite the close game.

    Press release:

SB XLVI EARNS 47.8 OVERNIGHT RATING
3rd Highest Super Bowl Overnight Ever, Less Than One Percent Behind Super Bowls XLV and XXI (47.9)

14% Higher Than Last NBC Super Bowl

7% Higher Than Last Time Giants and Patriots Met in Super Bowl XLII

Boston Registered a 56.7/81, Best Overnight Rating Ever for an NFL game in Boston

New York Registered a 49.7/74, Second-Best Overnight Ever for an NFL game in New York

Final Half-Hour of Pre-Game Show Best Since 2003

INDIANAPOLIS – Feb. 6, 2012 – Super Bowl XLVI in which the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 21-17, earned a 47.8/71 overnight rating/share last night on NBC, the third-highest overnight rating in Super Bowl history and less than one percent off the highest (47.9 for both Super Bowl XLV and Super Bowl XXI), according to overnight data released today by The Nielsen Company.

The 47.8/71 is seven percent higher than Super Bowl XLII on Fox when the Giants defeated the Patriots 17-14.

The overnight rating is 14 percent higher than the last Super Bowl on NBC (Super Bowl XLIII, Steelers 27, Cardinals 23) and higher than any of NBC’s previous 11 Super Bowls in which there were metered markets.

Tops all other Super Bowls involving the Giants and Patriots in Nielsen People Meter History (Since 1988).

Looks like HUGE ratings for The Voice!  We’ll see if it holds up for the rest of the season and if they can find a breakout star this year.

I hope the headlines in the next coming days spur Idol producers to put on a better show.

  • Anonymous

I’m not surprised at The Voice’s ratings. They would have done very well after the Super Bowl & had a lot of promo for their premiere.

I was one of the people that predicted that The Voice would average 15 million this year. I think that will happen even against competition like CBS shows & DWTS returning later. I think they have a core audience that will keep tuning in especially in the 18-49 year olds. I think they did keep their fanbase from last year & gained some new fans especially considering how Idol hasn’t been as good this year. It has very good buzz & is an entertaining show. Frankly, I don’t think many of their viewers care that Javier is not successful. I think they just want to be entertained & right now the blind auditions, the entertainment factor, & the chemistry of the judges/mentors are better than XF & Idol IMO.

I love Idol & have been watching since the beginning. But I think if Idol doesn’t have good contestants, have good buzz, & have the judges become entertaining & judge well that Idol could be in trouble & The Voice could overtake Idol with the best ratings for a singing competition. It might not happen this year, but if Idol’s ratings keep on the downward spiral it could happen by next year.

Here are last night’s fast affiliate ratings w/table.

Of course NBC topped the night in a landslide, but we’ll have to wait
a little while (but probably not too long) for time-zone adjusted fast
national program ratings.  Early metered market overnight household
ratings (which are time zone adjusted) are available for The Voice, and the Super Bowl.   Based on the metered market numbers I speculate (and it’s just a guess!) that the Super Bowl won’t set any viewing records but that Bill’s guess for The Voice after the Super Bowl is in the right zip code (he guessed better than last year’s Glee, but behind Undercover Boss two years ago).

Again, ignore the NBC numbers below. You can pretty much ignore the
rest of the numbers too — they’re not subject to significant revisions,
but they just aren’t that interesting. Ah well, happens every year with

30.3 million seems to be the best number, the upper number is likely skewed high from the Super Bowl postgame.

The younger-skewing demographic for The Voice means its Nielsen rating will not translate into as many viewers as Idol (which gets a lot more 50+ viewers).

  • durbfan

Aside from Rock on the Range (Columbus, May 17-19), nothing else specific yet. He said in his backstage interview at AFR that he’ll be touring throughout spring and summer so I think we’ll hear deets any day now.

I think that the original poster’s point is that Kelly has been successful based on her music, and not what she does outside of that.  She’s been bashed by some fans for not living in LA, and for staying out of the tabloids. When My December and All I Ever Wanted didn’t perform like Breakaway, fans said that it was because of the way that she dresses, her weight, and because she stays out of the media spotlight.  But without changing anything, she’s still one of the top performers today, and has had a longer career than a lot of other people, who basked in the media spotlight.

  • Anonymous

The Voice couldn’t keep people tuning in last year, so I think it’s going to take some effort to make that happen this season.  They’ve made some changes, but only time will tell if they were the right changes, and if they stop the leak that developed last year.  It’s just hard for me to say that a show that drew one of its lowest ratings of the season for the finale is going to draw 15 million people on the season.

  • Anonymous

I agree that the show doesn’t really help it’s contestants. The judges comments make it seem that most of them don’t intend to do more about it. I hope the record labels don’t feel the same way. But like I said I think people just find it entertaining to watch. The blind auditions gimmick does help. But it helps that the judges are entertaining. I love Idol, but the judges are so bland & not interesting this year. I’m still watching Idol. I’m just saying that some people might have stopped watching Idol because it’s not as entertaining anymore especially when there’s other options.

  • Taro

I agree. The S2 premiere of The Voice was entertaining and I’ll be catching the next episode. To me it’s so much more entertaining than Idol this year. The Voice is a refreshing change in format and presentation.

Not bothering to watch Idol this year unless there’s a “buzz-worthy” contestant in the voting rounds.

  • Anonymous

I agree it’s finale didn’t do well. But I think DWTS is losing more of it’s luster. I think it’s ratings have gone down partially because it’s an old show. Now DWTS will still have good ratings. I think it will just be down from last season. I actually think Idol has tougher competition than The Voice. Also, I think some Idol viewers have left for The Voice.

I think The Voice will be helped by Smash this year. I think Smash will do very well & become a breakout hit. Also, I think The Voice realized their blind auditions is what makes people watch so they have more episodes this year of that.

  • Anonymous

DWTS ratings are going down, but The Voice will have to attract those viewers on its own merit.  I think they hurt themselves last year, when they didn’t properly think through the season, and made it clear that the show was not as important as America’s Got Talent.  They are going to need a contestant with a lot of buzz in order to get those people who watched, and then ignored, last year’s show.

  • Anonymous

I’m not saying that The Voice will attract DWTS viewers. I think they will attract different viewers than DWTS especially since The Voice is now with a musical show in Smash. Of course, The Voice needs buzzworthy contestants. But I definitely think Idol needs the same thing especially since their ratings has taken a dramatic drop. The one thing going for The Voice is it is still a young show which has the potential of beating out Idol & DWTS in ratings since they’re old shows. I’m not saying it happens this year, but I think it will happen especially if Seacrest leaves next year.

New interview with Archie in Singapore yesterday. Talking about his decision to go on a mission, he said:

“It was a really hard decision and it took me a couple of years to make the decision.”
[...]“There were a lot going through my head
when I was making the decision. I am giving up what I worked so hard
for, leaving my family and fans behind,” he said.
“But I know it’s worth it. It is a calling from within and it’s
exactly the same feeling when I went ahead to quit my job to audition
    for American Idol,” he added.

The baby face Idol finalist, who turned 21 two months ago, feels very
fortunate to garner support and encouraging words from his family and
fans. “My family was very surprised and made sure I thought about this
thoroughly. My mum taught me to follow my heart and I did,” he grinned.
“My fans are mixed about it though. They don’t want me to go but it’s
cool to see how supportive they have been and the respect they have
shown towards my decision,” he said earnestly.
[...]But Archuleta will not be leaving his fans in a lurch. The singer has
it all planned out. “Even though I cannot perform while I am gone, I am
still going to record music before I leave,” he said.
“I am not going to leave my fans empty handed. I am not sure what the
rules are going to be like but I will update my fans with a quick email
or video whenever time permits,” he added.

While you may be proud that this song may bring to light what is really going on in the gay underground, I interpret “cruisin around for sex” synonymous with a description of a sexual predator. Whether the recipient of the advances will give consent or not, it does not change the intention of the person who is “cruisin” (and I don’t care whether one is gay or straight or looking for a  male or female). It sounds as if they are stalking like an animal for another human being to use as an object to satisfy their own sexual urges.

I just became less of an Adam fan.

  • Anonymous

Awwww I hope Adam gets better soon.  It sucks to get sick when you’re away from home.  He has fever and feels dizzy, he tweeted earlier.

Also he’s performing BTIKM in Stockholm tonight at a Gala for LGBT company and it will be aired on national television Friday night I think.

  • GS61

    I agree.
Pretty sleezy, distasteful and classless, gay or straight.

  • http://twitter.com/poppetawoppet Emily

I guess for me for you it depends on the context of how the phrase is used within the song….

  • Anonymous

I hope it’s nothing more than a 24 hour bug. Hopefully, they will let him get a few hours of rest today before today’s big events. Sounds like the band is feeling better, so they can help Adam make it through his performance tonight.

  • CindyM

As has been said many times with regards to Idol winners who didn’t meet expectations, the lack of success for last years contestants may not make any difference with regard to The Voice. It will succeed if its an entertaining TV show. So far, for me this year, last nights The Voice was more entertaining than any idol show yet this season.

  • http://twitter.com/ms0712 M S

Adam only gave a one sentence description of Shady.  I’ll wait until I hear the song and then decide on what he means to convey in the song.

  • CindyM

Eh, I don’t get sexual predator when thinking about cruising. Sexual predator has a context of non- consentual in my mind or taking advantage because of power or position. I don’t get that from bar-hookups or cruising. It’s a reality every night at nightclubs, bars and other places for some people. Not my place to judge.

  • Avari

(hope this isn’t a duplicate; my post disappeared into cyberspace. Hope it doesn’t show up in the wrong thread!)

That’s too bad, but I understand that sometimes you can’t help your gut reaction to a song’s lyrcis. I confess that I HATE a lot of songs on the radio right now because their lyrics objectify women in the worst possible way. But it’s all in the presentation, and sometimes a song is just telling a story. Hopefully you’ll listen to the whole song before you pass judgment on Adam’s morals.

What did you think of the lyrics to FYE?

  • Anonymous

“Shady” is the song I have been dying to hear most ever since we started getting reviews

  • Anonymous

What?  LoL, looking for a hook up is equal to being a sexual predator?  Sorry, but I cannot disagree more.  One is consensual, the other not.

  • Anonymous

I have absolutely no moral or ethical issues with anything that Adam sings about, but I just wish he wouldn’t spell it all out for us, you know? It has so much more impact when the listener can make their own interpretation. I don’t think that he’s a famewhore, by any stretch of the imagination – I think that he is just a very open, honest, and literal guy. But statements like the following just make it appear that he is actively courting controversy, almost taunting, even if that is not what he is intending to do. It kind of dilutes the message and strikes me as a bit unsophisticated.

He told the Daily Star: “There are songs on the album about me rebelling
against society and saying, ‘F**k you, I’ll do what I want’. “‘Cuckoo’
is about me acknowledging I’m insane and celebrating that fact. And
‘Shady’ is a sleazy, disco funk about cruising for sex, so it will be
interesting to see how Middle America interprets that.

I agree, the Voice was a lot more entertaining. The biggest reason is the forum and the Judges. You have a lot of big egos, but they make it work and it’s obvious, they love what they do. One of the biggest reasons I enjoyed it, was the song choices. The Voice was lot more contemporary and I enjoyed how they staged the performances. The performances felt very intimate and unlike Idol, they actually had people who had memorable, showstopping moments. I love those wow moments. I’m really looking forward to not only what the Judges do, but also the contestants. I can’t say the same about Idol.

  • Anonymous

I think the Voice really grabbed the “we are making a TV show here first” by the horns and ran with it.  The musical careers of the contestants would defiantly be a distant second in regards to making a successful reality TV show.

  • Anonymous

I would much rather for a artist to tell me what they were thinking and the process how they got there, then the types who don’t say a whole lot or show any enthusiasm for their own music. Maybe it seems like he’s courting controversy or taunting, is due to the fact that in the Idol bubble, no one else is that open about sex and relationships in their music. Everyone else is pretty predictable, boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy meets another girl, girl dies and then the process is repeated with another I lost by boyfriend or girlfriend song. Adam sometimes sing about just picking someone up and losing yourself in them for a few hours. True love is not always easy to find, sometimes you have to experiment a little or a lot until you find the one perfect for you. It’s real life and sometimes it raw and not so pretty.

He’s honest and open, and I love that about him. Wouldn’t want him to be any other way, tbh. Many of my friends, gay, straight, male, female, went through what Adam describes as a “slutbag” phase. You go through it, then, if you’re lucky (Adam was :D) you find someone to love, and get over it. Nothing shocking, disturbing, controversial, or upsetting. Mad respect for his openness.

I think The Voice is there to be a entertainment show not a stepping stone to music greatness. So far the Judges have proved to be a lot more interesting and entertaining than the contestants, because they are very diverse and all so very talented. I won’t be surprised if a few more duets came out from this groups of judges.

  • Anonymous

No, don’t misunderstand me. I love WHAT he is singing about and am excited to hear the actual songs. And I agree, I’m glad that someone is tackling these underrepresented subjects. I guess he just sounds a bit like a kid trying to be naughty to me – hence the unsophisticated comment. I do love his obvious enthusiasm for it though.

“‘Shady’ is a sleazy, disco funk about cruising for sex,”

Honestly, other than music style, this could describe a large number of current and past Top 40 hits. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard some male hip hop/R & B singer talking about hitting on all the girls in the club, and taking them home for a one night stand.  Not seeing the controversy here. At least I don’t think I’ll have to hear him referring to women as “ho’s.”

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

While you may be proud that this song may bring to light what is really going on in the gay underground, I interpret “cruisin around for sex” synonymous with a description of a sexual predator. Whether the recipient of the advances will give consent or not, it does not change the intention of the person who is “cruisin” (and I don’t care whether one is gay or straight or looking for a  male or female). It sounds as if they are stalking like an animal for another human being to use as an object to satisfy their own sexual urges.

What in the absolute world?  This isn’t just the gay underworld. Did you ever go to bars or clubs when you were in college? Lots of people are there looking to get laid…. men and women both. That’s reality.   And there’s thousands of pop songs that directly address this.  You might have heard one just recently on the radio. Enrique Inglesias “Tonight I’m Lovin’ You.” (Actually, that’s the clean version. The song is actually “Tonight I’m F****** You.”) And it’s hardly anything new.  Rod Stewart sang about it with “If You Think I’m Sexy.”   Of course, since Adam’s singing about dude on dude or girl on girl quick hook-ups, it’s going to be more controversial.  That’s also a reality.

True dat. I totally went through that phase and honestly I don’t think my marriage would be as strong now without it. I learned a lot those years. Can’t say i regret it either.

Sometimes you gotta kiss a lot of frogs.

ETA: never did I consider myself a predator or anyone else who I might have hooked up with. Sometimes people need to figure themselves out, sometimes people don’t want to be alone, sometimes people are just plain horny. It’s hard to see the context of anything in colorful quote.

I love the idea of Adam being open and risk-taking on his new album.  Just that in itself though doesn’t guarantee a great song so I will have to hear the melody, production and lyrics before I pass judgment on it if it is a good song or not, but I am certainly responsive to artistic statements on individual freedoms.

Are Actors considered immoral for playing hookers and pimps, for having simulated sex on screen, or for being in shows that are all about sex and violence.  Can’t understand why singers have to be held up to a higher standard.

When you think about it, ”cruising for sex” isn’t anything different then the college bars your kids are going to. Just the other day I was at one of those bars with my extended family. In the back there was an 80′s band playing but in the front of the bar it was a dance floor packed with kids. That is ALL that is going on- just kids looking for other kids to hook up with. It is the same exact thing.

Probably the biggest lulzy shock I ever got in my life was when i went to download a song by Lloyd called Dedication To My Ex. It seems the real version of the song that I downloaded- he really didn’t “miss her lovin, her lovin, her lovin” at all, but just a certain part of her anatomy, lol. All I did was delete it and downloaded the clean version instead. i cannot tell you how many Eminem songs I have done that with. If the song lyrics are that risque, it will probably have a clean version.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

LOL! I did the exact same thing Studio57.  I heard the Lloyd song on the radio, thought, “I love this! So catchy!”  Didn’t realize I’d downloaded the “raw’ version until I was wearing my iPod while out walking. My neighbors probably thought my face was red from exertion. HAHA!!

Oh, I have to disagree with that- I think the worst thing a singer can do is let their political affiliation be known. She really stirred up a hornets nest with the Ron Paul thing. Nothing is more sickening to me than when singers won’t just sing and  feel they have to shove their political views down my throat but that’s just me. Any politcal affiliation- left or right.

But she got alot of mileage out of that one so good on her. radio stations are chalk full of right wingers. Smart gal.

Well besides the stalking like an animal part you’re right on the money.  That is what cruising for sex means.  You wanna get some and you’re out looking for people who wanna get some too.  It’s about getting off nothing more nothing less.

This isn’t exclusive to the underground gay community either.  Try going to any singles bar on the weekend and regardless of age or sexual orientation there are people there whose main goal for the night is hooking up.  If you’re single I see no harm in it.  Be safe and have fun.

  • CindyM

See and I have the opposite feelings about Kelly. I like some of her songs, but I feel no connection to her at all. Her spat with RCA and her put downs of Ryan Tedder didn’t endear her to me and to be honest, her “he did me wrong” songs have gotten a little repetitive to me. It’s just different strokes, I think. Some people like the reclusive nature of some artists and some appreciate the openness. Neither one is the only approach.

just who is Adam saying f**k you to?  Middle America?  That’s me – I guess he’s saying f**k you to me then.  ):

I think you’re getting two different songs mixed up. The Middle America quote is about Shady, and the fuck you song that we know about is Trespassing.

While I’m sure it’s relatable on a more general level to anyone who’s been told “we don’t want you here you don’t fit in,” the lyrics we’ve gotten so far appear to be about Adam trying to break into the music industry despite all the people that told him he was too different, that it would never happen. And about believing in yourself and saying fuck you to the doubters and going for it despite that. No insult there.

Kelly deserves all the kudos and recognition she is getting. She did a fantastic job and she did it live.

As for the Voice, I really enjoyed it last night. I’m on the fence with them inviting people to compete, but it’s also nice to see and hear decent singers I might not otherwise.

Of course, it’s all about the judges … but I’m even enjoying that competition so far. I’m sure my feelings will change a few times. I’m fickle like that.

Yep.  Could’ve been easily describing Enrique Iglesias Tonight I’m F*ckin You (changed to tonight I’m Lovin You for Radio)

or how about Rihanna’s S&M song?  Britney’s 3some song. etc.

Pop songs are predominately about sex and from what I can tell the interviewers are asking Adam what the music is about and he’s just giving them an honest answer.

  • Anonymous

Well, the one song which he says that in (assuming it to be Trespassing) it’s seems to be referring to those in the music industry saying “you’re not welcome here.” The “fuck you” statement seems to be presented a bit out of context in the article.

I love Kelly and I agree that she gets by on her talent and personality not on tabloid gossip and bad behavior.  I love that about her.  She always seems to take the high road.

rewind to 2007 and Kelly surely doesn’t always take the high road.  She was all over the tabloids for her fight with RCA/Clive Davis and she was not shy about saying exactly what was on her mind either.  Also during the Breakaway era, at the height of her popularity she was a fixture of the gossip rags.

The celebrities who feel a need to constantly be in the news any way they can get there just seem a little pathetic to me.

Some celebrities just garner more attention than others, through no particular effort of their own.  The difference of course is that Kelly is from TX and always lived a more quiet and low key lifestyle.  If she were from LA originally her lifestyle might be different.

She is very thoughtful and appreciative of her fans, but she doesn’t seem to need to tell them every detail about her life.  Some things are not our business.

This is very true.  I don’t personally need to know when Kelly’s dogs need a bath but she seems keen on sharing that information with me just the same and as a fan I’m happy with any tid bit she wants share.  As for being thoughtful and appreciating her fans, yes she does.  The wonderful thing about Idol is that all of these contestants seem to hold their fans in very high regard and are very vocal in how much those fans mean to them.  That’s why I love the idols, not a snob or diva in the bunch from what I’ve seen in the last 10 years.

To be fair, to the extent Kelly was in the rags during the time of her very public fight with Clive/RCA, it was because they were having professional/artistic differences and both sides were choosing to fight their fights in the media rather than in private.  Now, though I personally dislike it when people take professional/artistic fights like that public, it is not the same as getting in the gossip rags because of who you’re dating, because you got arrested, because you said something that was calculated to get picked up by the media, or for otherwise bad personal behavior.  There’s a big difference IMHO.

Media outlets take a 10 minute interview, pick out three quotes from the interview and then fit those quotes into their own narrative.

Adam has already given hours upon hours of interviews where he discussed the songs on his upcoming album. Never once has he said all of his songs are a big Fuck You to society.

If you really want to know what the album and songs are about, go back and watch some of those interviews. I’m certain there are some fans here that can provide links and help to put your mind at ease over this issue.

  • Anonymous

Trespassing is the only song we know of that has anything to do with going against the norms or “rules” of society. Shady does not go against the norms of society in any way as many people view sex as simply an activity with no strings attached. I’m not sure if it’s a generational thing, but I’ve never even questioned that people do this regardless of sexual orientation, it’s not a taboo subject at all. It’s like half what the bar and club scenes are all about and it’s about consenting adults finding one another for at least a night.

Adam used to introduce a song on tour with the words “you won’t find true love in a sleazy bar” but he ultimately did (he would argue the bar he met his boyfriend is was no actually sleazy, but that’s semantics).

In the end, I think looking for companionship with someone else doesn’t always have to end in commitment. It’s nice when that happens, of course, but it’s also sometimes just about a temporary connection. It can be very fulfilling, if not long lasting.

  • Anonymous

Adam has undoubtedly faced a lot of disrespect in his life, and his reaction to this is coming out loud and clear in his music. Aftermath on FYE is another example.  I think it is great how, because of the unique position he is in, he is giving a voice to those who have been voiceless for too long.

  • CindyM

The original article that Digital Spy used was a little different. Adam has spoken of Trespassing song as the song about people telling him he couldn’t go there, he didn’t belong, he can’t do that, etc thus the “Fuck You, I’ll do what I want’ attitude of the song. He also talks a bit about his past and his very committed present.

I have heard many songs about hooking up, looking for sex, having sex, getting down on, rape, you name it. They have been around for a long time. Oh yeah, and some people like singing about whores. I don’t find it shocking or perverse to hear that another song may cover it some more. Cruising for sex is no different than “hoping to get lucky.”  It goes on everywhere! (even in this tiny town where I live)

I could swear that the info about her relationship with David Hodges as impetus for het songs on My December came from tabloids. Yep, just looked it up and Kelly talked about his cheating, her low standards etc. Kelly hasn’t really had a lot of personal life since then, by her own admission she hangs out with a group of four girls most of the time and not in high media towns.

I love Kelly too, but we must stan a different girl! lol

Kelly isn’t some mild, sweet little wallflower with a meek personality. Her actions, words and her personality have landed her in trouble with the media, tabloids and inside the Idol bubble many times over the years. The video for MKIA was all about the tabloids and gossip sites.

Kelly fired her guitar player in the middle of a concert. Recently, she got major backlash for supporting a certain political candidate. Kelly says and does some controversial things sometimes. All of this makes me like her even more!

Trespassing isn’t about going against the norms of society! Where did that come form? Adam has said repeadedlty it is about him being himself and going forward and being himself despite NOT BEING ACCPETED! I think this could include being gay and also ABCs banning and the reluctance of radio to play sexy music from a gay man.

LOL, Adam does not hold the monopoly in the music world on singing about cruising and sex. To the contrary, this theme permeates music. Madonna put out  a book where the sole subject was sex and had to sold in a brown rapper. Now Adam broaches the subject in a song and he is a sexual predator? I just don’t get it.

I’m sure if Kelly were dating someone the tabloids would discuss it.

Kelly has been very open about the fact that she likes to drink but she does it at home with her friends.  If they are getting into drunken brawls no one is the wiser.

I think that during Hollywood week they should teach these idols how to give an interview so that the things they say do get picked up by the media.  It’s free PR and raises their profiles which can in turn raise the interest in their music.  If more of the idols could hone their soundbite/interview skills it wouldn’t seem so rare or odd when someone is good at it.

by the by, Kelly has been in the rags for things outside her control which were fabricated, because that’s what rags do sometimes.  Some of these stories included her ungrateful attitude towards AI, at the very beginning of her career she was labeled a cheater because it was falsely reported that she had a prior recording contract with made her ineligible to compete on Idol, she was rumored to be sleeping with Justin Guarini; she was supposed to have eaten an entire red velvet cake by herself at a party (that one made me seriously LOL), nodes on her vocal chords, the lesbian rumor, etc. etc.  So not even Kelly is immune to gossip rags which report things that aren’t necessarily true.

Lets be blunt about what “cruising for sex” means in the gay community.  Here in my town there is a local park that has gotten the name “the fruit loop.” Men go there, total strangers, to meet in the woods and get it on. Some do it at malls, restrooms, highway rest stops ect. I have never heard of straight people doing this, besides maybe the old fashioned days where straights would go “park,” and then be asked to leave if a cop sees them. If a gay couple gets caught doing ANYTHING, they get arrested. I highly doubt Adam is talking about one night stands at a bar where usually you at least talk to the person. So…It’s going to be interesting to see where Adam takes the song.

Lol, does no one remember Kelly swigging whiskey on stage with Metal Skool?  Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but come on, I don’t think she ever tried to present herself as some goodie two shoes.

As for Shady, I think a lot of assumptions are being made about a song none of us has heard yet.  And looking for sex as a theme in pop/rock/country music isn’t exactly a new concept. That’s all I’m gonna say about that.

    I’m left confuzzled.

You don’t need anything so extraordinary to hook up except a cute outfit, a drink and a club on a Saturday night, for example.  It’s a simple as that.  Is this such a new concept?

And Adam has stated himself he has had sex with random strangers (flirting and dancing and talking with someone for two hours does not make him much less of a stranger really) more than once or twice.  I don’t think this is a shock for anyone, or that he’s the only damn person in the world who has done it.  It’s the most normal thing in the world.  I don’t understand why people are so torn about it.  His boyfriend was a damn one night stand!  It doesn’t mean he’s “cruising for sex in some damn wood/park” or is a sexual predator!  It’s called being a human being.

And Adam has stated himself he has had sex with random strangers (flirting and dancing and talking with someone for two hours does not make him much less of a stranger really) more than once or twice.

If you know someone’s name and have had a conversation with them and then take them home with you they aren’t a “stranger” per se.  I think what Ronnie D is referring to is more like glory holes which is where someone goes into a restroom and has sex with someone who is behind a wall and you never even see their face.  Personally Adam strikes me as being to romantic for something like that.  I think he’d at least like to know their name and see their face LOL.

His boyfriend was a damn one night stand!

well, technically no he wasn’t. If it turns into a relationship it can no longer be considered a one-night stand as by definition those only happen once. Not to mention they have never verified that they had sex the first night, people assume they did but only they know for sure.

I’m sure Adam had more than a few one-night stands during the tour though and so much the better for him. That’s HOT

It makes me proud to see a Gay guy using his music to REALLY tell what’s going on!

I like it for that reason, but also to let people know as he has said before – he’s not America’s babysitter.  If that’s what people want, they’ll have to plop down $40 to the local teen for their night out.

It’s sort of like the Queen ‘fans’ who leave comments saying they don’t want a gay guy fronting the band – i.e. they’re not now and never were actually Queen fans.  Srsly, who do they think they’re fooling?  It’s like all those straight women pretending to be gay guys to pimp their favorite.  HELLO – everyone knows they’re straight women!

There are some fans artists just don’t want and there are some artists fans don’t want.  Some fans are happiest with the family and bible-friendly CAC genre, some prefer Country, and some want a little kick-ass pop/rock and the attitude that goes with it.  Adam doesn’t lose anything by being clear to those that don’t like his kick-ass pop/rock attitude that they have other choices and good luck to them, no harm, no foul.

Oh with that I agree completely with you.  In fact I already said that I don’t think the song is about that, or even Adam’s life has ever been a part of that, but of course that’s a personal opinion, because we don’t know anything really.

We just have a different definition of a “stranger”.  Let’s go with random acquaintance?  LOL s’all gooood.

ETA: This really isn’t a reply to Randi, but to the person Randi was replying to previously. Hit the button before thinking to go back ……

One of the reasons people who are gay resort to parks and public restrooms and the like is that there are often no traditional places ( bars, social hangouts, etc.) where they would be accepted to publically hook-up in the manner that straight individuals do all the time.
I know this was the case in my area of the world until one of our very popular local TV personalities literally got caught with his pants down at a local park. he was arrested along with his partners, and his name was printed in the crime report along with all the other arrests that week.
It forced the issue out into the open and started a discussion. Now not only are there gay bars which operate openly, folks of the same gender are able to meet in some of the popular nightspots without being harassed.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/NBACS2XHDEHKIEDHSUMSQYMKHQ tap

I have never heard of straight people doing this

Come on, you’re kidding, right?  You do know what Kelly’s song ‘I don’t hook up’ is about, right?  Even if she doesn’t, the song makes it clear that it’s a popular and common thing to do.   And it’s not a new phenomenon either – all generations have dealt with this issue, to a larger or smaller degree dependent upon the cultural mores of the time, which has gone up and down throughout all of recorded history.  And since when do pop/rock stars have to conform to christian CAC expectations for their performances and recordings?  Never, imho.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ACMLXLYSSX73RNYQOUZWSO2I4U Enough already!

    1) Come on now, ppl watching the superbowl were too tanked to turn the tv off.  2) Adam isn’t breaking new ground, everyone saying FU these days.
    3) Elton John looked amazing, so did the gal made to look like Liz.   Wondering why Simon with all his millions couldn’t have paid to get Melanie her own song and not Aretha’s anthem.  Not that she didn’t do a nice job with it.

There seems to be a lot of assumptions on what Adam meant and on what type of one night stands or hook ups he has had in the past. Adam has stated repeatedly that he strongly prefers to be in monogamous relationship. That is what he has wanted in his life for a long time and it is the type of relationship he is in currently.

The Shady song could be about sometime in his past or it could be about a lifestyle he has witnessed, but not been involved in as a participant. Artists often sing and write songs that are non-autobiographical.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/NBACS2XHDEHKIEDHSUMSQYMKHQ tap

Adam only gave a one sentence description of Shady.  I’ll wait until I hear the song and then decide on what he means to convey in the song.

As for me, I won’t be judging the content much at all.  I like Adam and I know he’s a sexual human being, so I not only expect, but look forward to him dealing with that theme in his music.  I don’t care if he’s gay or straight – I’m straight and I think sex is pretty damn fine.  Most human beings do if they’re being honest.  I’m great with him singing about how fine it is without knowing to what degree he’s acquainted with his bedfellows.

ETA: And I’m really looking forward to Shady. I think it’s going to be among my favorites.

Adams’ statement to the people of the QX Gala

Ladies and gentleman, I’m so sorry I will not be printable to Attend the gala tonight. I was really excited to be a part of the evening but I SEEM To Have caught a violent flu bug that’s been going around. I was resting this afternoon feeling a little strange but When it came time to head out for sound check I got so dizzy I could not stand.  it hit me so solid. I’m sure you-can imagine how singing SUCH an intense song just Is not Possible in the state I’m in.
I promise to somehow make it up to you in the near future. Good luck to all the Nominees and I hope all the guests have a great evening.
    Thank you for your understanding.

Honestly, other than music style, this could describe a large number of current and past Top 40 hits.

Remember Jelly Roll Morton?  If you don’t know the origins of his nickname you should wiki or google it.  And ‘Good Golly Miss Molly, she sure likes to ball’?  Meaning was literal folks.  There’s nothing new under the sun where sex is concerned, or pop/rock singers singing about it either.

eta: to cross off pop/rock because even country western singers have sung about it – a lot. Johnny Cash was great at double entendre and at subtle (and not so subtle) inuendo

Wow, this is the first I have ever heard of him cancelling an performance.

Well if he has food poisoning (or stomach bug or w/e) like his backing musicians, then I think the last thing he wants to do is risk being in public or on a stage singing with that condition.  I know when that happens to me I don’t leave the house until it’s done and over with.

I think Adam singing “They say we’ll rot in hell, but I don’t think we will” broke new ground on the equality issue.  I know I was very moved by the honesty and poingnancy of OLL.

Me too!  I’m happy to see him saying ‘fuck no, I’m not a second-class citizen!’  It’s past time that happened, imo.  It’s hard to believe that ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ was done away with only so recently given it’s anti-democratic intent.  I’m thrilled to see Adam taking such a public stand.  I’m not talking about Shady or any other of his songs, because that’s nothing new, but in his personal life and the way he doesn’t make excuses for it.  He doesn’t have anything to answer for to anyone imo, any more than the rest of us do in the way we’ve chosen to live our lives*.

    * eta: unless you’re a serial killer or pedophile or something like that – hope that goes without saying.

Actually, all “cruising for sex” means in most of the gay community is looking for a hook up.  Most of us, if inclined just go to a bar/club or use Grindr, Manhunt or similar.  While there are guys who do hook up in places like you mention, they are not the majority, and they tend to be the butt of a great deal of ridicule.

That video with Casey & his Dad is hilarious! I loved how he called Haley during the shearing! So happy that the IBD campaign was successful! I know Casey has been in London for a bit working on his album–so maybe this was done before he left. Hope Casey is feeling well. I am sure the beard will be back soon–LOL!

  • Tess

Isn’t “trolling for sex” just the same thing as paying for it except that its sort of free and more acceptable in our society.  And most gay hook-ups in rest rooms and other sundry places is just the equivalent of hookers and johns in seedy hotels.  Why is one any more repugnant than the other.

  • Anonymous

I have to agree with Melinda and Michael in that the Idol Auditions need to be changed up somehow.  I’m not really sure how, but they were kind of stale by my third season watching.

  • CindyM

No Tess, I don’t agree with you. The hooker/john relationship is also about apower. The hooker often needs the money desperately and often would not participate if they didn’t have to. A hookup implies a concensual agreement between two parties for the pleasure of both (hopefully, lol) I also don’t get the ‘gay” hookups in the bathrooms, because believe me I’ve seen and heard many heterosexual incidents that follow that pattern.

Smeggingnuts it looks like you used google translate on that page since the rest of it was in Swedish, which garbles the English a bit and adds weird capitalization. Here’s the original:

haha yeah I should have untrasnlated it first….woops

  • CindyM

    Sorry RonnieD., I strongly disagree.

Cruising for sex can mean bars, clubs etc. Maybe your town has none of those places, but your assumption is invalid in many areas and I would say in Adams area there are plenty of places to go. As far as straight people, have you never heard of craigslist, MySpace, strip clubs and the like? Straight people cruise for sex as much as gays do.

  • Anonymous

Ohhh, Nakia – I’m liking that song a lot!

All I have to say is that I really don’t have any desire to hear songs about cruising for sex so Shady will be one I skip on the CD……way out of my comfort zone.    TMI for my taste.

Wasn’t there an Idol that got busted for “cruising for sex” on the internet? Who was that again?

That calls for a collaboration, lol.

Both straights and gays participate in impersonal sex. Where the “pickup” happens can be different, mostly because of different experiences in the two communities. Since gay sex was illegal for so long, and since many people still react negatively to a same sex couple walking hand in hand in public, the gay community’s tradition of impersonal sex and personal relationships is more hidden than the straight community’s tradition. Your “fruit loop” park and the immediate arrests which happen there are examples. By contrast, the straight community’s one-night stands happen in bars, frats, parties–ie, in more public places.

…and the fact is, impersonal sex is impersonal sex, whether the people involved pick one another up in a park or in a bar, whether they are gay or straight.

Re Shady–so many songs on the radio deal with impersonal sex that the topic is not even remotely controversial. The only thing that makes “Shady” different is that Adam is talking about picking up boys, not girls.

I’ve said this before and it bears repeating: If it’s not OK to stereotype LGBT, it’s also NOT OK to stereotype “Middle Americans” southerners, etc. Stop for a second and consider the contradiction.

This is what is sadly missing from this discussion and comments about “cruising for sex.”

If we had to discuss safe sex and contraceptives every time a song about sex appeared, we wouldn’t ever be talking about anything else though.

  • almondean88

I just want to remind people that when you talk about “cruising for sex” you need to have some responsibility to the other person and to yourself and your health.

  • Moria Polonius

Give me a good, sexy, dance song any day and especially from someone that can sing. In the world of music, there is something for everybody and right now I am enjoying Adam’s world.

Does anyone remember if Shady was described as being on the dark or light side of the album? Because Adam saying that he’s met and slept with many great people (one of whom became his boyfriend) sound like Adam’s pov on the subject could be enjoyable.

ETA: Forget the question, disco funk sounds like the light side.

  • Anonymous

sabbia, so if people go to a bar looking for a hook up (cruising around for sex) means they’re sexual predators? Well.. that means bars are full of them sexual predators then. Oh .. good thing I don’t drink and so don’t go to a bar. LOL

By the way if you like Adam song’s Soaked… Wasn’t Adam explaining Soaked similar to Shady?

    Soaked to the Bone
    Sink like a Stone
    I will take you home
    It’s not the firs time
    It’s not the worst crime
    Our soul will be okay

I’m looking forward to Adam’s album very much – I’m sure there will be something on there that everyone will like.

  • Anonymous

It’s not even clear who the song is about. Someone cruising for a hookup, whether it be Adam, a friend, a girlfriend, Senator Larry Craig ;)

It could be about the dark side and the loneliness in that and someone wanting more than one night. Or it could be celebrating the freedom of one’s sexuality and discovery.  For every positive there is a negative, right?

All I know is Nile Rodgers plays on the track, so I’m damn sure not going to skip it, I might just play it first.  Dying to hear the lick he contributed.

Read the article in Sunday’s Parade about Kat – comes across as a really down-to-earth kinda gal – very likeable.  Hope her show is a success.

  • GS61

I wouldn’t call Adam a sexual predator, but I would call him a pig if this is how he really behaved.
    Gay or Straight, doesn’t matter.

But I do think its all for the buzz, like the Queen rumor. Probably more crap like this to come until his album drops.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

I think what some might be missing is that the term itself “cruising” has a certain meaning within gay culture. It’s sort of slang, and has a specific meaning when referenced in that culture. So a person outside of it might think of it as totally something different. I didn’t mean to say all gays do it or all straights don’t ect. There is actually a site called cruising for sex. It’s a whole subculture.

  • http://twitter.com/riskyladyfla MAS

Soaked lyrics, written by Matthew Bellamy of Muse……similar subject matter so could have had simiilar experiences (most musicians I think have).

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

And ‘Shady’ is a sleazy, disco funk about cruising for sex, so it will
be interesting to see how Middle America interprets that.”

Well now we know. It’s OK to stereotype the gay community but once you stereotype middle America it than becomes not OK.

It is (for me) getting a bit difficult to discern the criteria here.  I posted two simple benign comments and they were both zapped – maybe got caught in a “raid.” (?)  But, again, it’s MJ’s turf and, although hits are needed at any site, she has every right to lower the boom as she sees fit.

  • Anonymous

I wouldn’t call him a pig.  I would call him a normal, sexual human being – one who, when you come to know him, love and admire him.

  • Anonymous

Cruising for sex?  Definitely an 80s phrase my gay friends used…and boy were they fun to listen to talkin’ about it.  I can’t help but think of George Michael’s “Fast Love” though. Especially since there’s a discussion about public bathrooms..  LOL

I liked the beat (and I could dance to it) which is all that matters.

  • Anonymous

And I am still going to disagree. Maybe the older gays do, but I’m in my late 30′s and no-one I know around my age or younger refer to cruising in that manner. Any form of looking, be it bar, internet or Grindr is referred to as cruising. Sorry, but parks and malls have been out for years for the majority of us.

  • Moria Polonius

Gay people look for hook up and call in cruising. Straight people look for hook up and call it looking for hook up.

If that’s what you wanted to say, then I might be inclined to agree.
