X Factor: Simon Cowell signs off €1million budget to make Mary Byrne a global star

Mary Byrne was ecstatic last night after Simon Cowell phoned from Barbados – to give her a €1million record deal.

The mega investment is set to make the X Factor star, 51, one of his biggest stars.

Cowell spent most of New Year’s Eve on the phone from his Carribean holiday home to plan Dubliner Mary’s future.

A source close to the former Tesco check-out girl said: “Simon thinks there’s a huge gap in the market for her.”

Simon Cowell and Mezhgan Hussainy to set up home together

But things are looking good for Mezhgan Hussainy after the X factor judge revealed the couple are, finally, setting up home together.

And it could pave the way, whisper it, to a full-blown wedding.

Yep, 18 months after getting together, and almost a year after he got down on one slightly creaking knee, Si has let Mish share his space.

Before you can “happy new year”, the American make-up artist has sorted out her visa and is preparing to move into Simon’s West London mansion. The multi-millionaire mogul has told pals Mish will move in at the end of next month… on a trial basis.

Come on, come on, Take That… and party! Gary Barlow and co. perform energetic set at private event in Barbados

Tickets for their tour sold out in a matter of hours when they went on sale late last year.

But on Wednesday night a select group of fans were treated to an exclusive performance from the man band as they took to the stage for a 35-minute set at Simon Cowell’s private pre-New Year party in Barbados.

Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Jason Orange performed hits including Back For Good and Pray, although one member was noticeably absent in the form of Robbie Williams, who was seeing in 2011 with wife Ayda in Los Angeles.

Mary Byrne has a decent personality, unlike mega-star Susan Boyle who sells millions despite lackluster live performances and cancelled appearances. To be honest, its the older demographics that seems to be the ones the industry can count on to buy full albums on a consistent basis. Its a wise investment on Simon’s part. Mary may be the biggest seller of that X-Factor season.

  • lorismile

Happy New Year!!!!! Thanks to everyone for the fun this past year!

  • tripp_ncwy

The music guru signed off on a budget to financially back a glitzy video, album, tour and series of TV appearances and told the former Tesco check-out worker: I’ll make you my biggest star in 2011.

It seems like a lot to squeeze out of the million dollar budget. I guess she will be doing an album of cover songs to keep costs down. Simon will make sure he gets his money back before she sees a dime. Look forward to the Susan Boyle & Mary Byrne Senior Divas Tour 2011.

to make Mary Byrne a global star

So for the x-factor uninitiated in the world…who the hell is Mary? No way is Simon going to pull another SuBo out of the hat. Mary has no viral you-tube video…apparently isn’t mentally challenged…isn’t being highlighted on every day time talk show…and there doesn’t seem to be “free marketing” floating around for Mary (something that Simon uses to his full advantage).

This whole article sounds like a complete fake and someone’s way of filling up space on a cheesy gossip site. But even if it were true…a measly million pounds ain’t going to make a stah out of this pound of flesh…no hook no interest.

  • Valentin432

Following up on yesterday’s post: Gaga gave info on the release dates for the single (13/02) and album (23/5). That’s a lot of time between the two for someone who has such momentum, enough time to release a least two singles and more if one of them doesn’t perform as expected.
Avril performed her single yesterday and if I had to guess on how well it fits top 40 radio, I think it’s going to be a n°1 Hot100.
Britney’s single is set to be revealed next week.

All this could have a lot or nothing to do with Cook’s and Kelly’s release dates.

  • tripp_ncwy

Britney’s single is set to be revealed next week.

This was only a rumor. Her manager sent out a tweet that was retweeted by RCAPromo shooting down this information.

Everything I’ve seen online has been about how horrible Avril’s single is. Everyone seems to hate it…so of course, watch it shoot right to No. 1

As for Mary Byrne, Simon will probably pull enough strings to make her album relatively successful, but I doubt she will be SueBo v.2

I haven’t looked at Pulse. But on twitter, people seem to hate it. But maybe that’s just the people who show up on my feed.

I think it will likely do well, because it’s got a catchy hook. But it’s just meh for me — one of those songs I’d get sick of after hearing it a few times

  • girlygirl

    CindyM

    Yup.

  • loveroftalent

I really like Avril’s new song. She looked and sounded great. It’s really up to the radio stations, how well the song does.

  • Valentin432

To me WTH is like the Raise Your Glass of Avril, it’s an up tempo catchy tune that is totally what top 40 is playing right now, but still carries the singer’s identity. Avril’s image has always been the bratty, immature, slightly emo teenager and her voice and look have always matched that (which is becomming kind of creepy ten years later).
I actually prefer the verses on WTH than on RYG at least on first listen.

This was only a rumor. Her manager sent out a tweet that was retweeted by RCAPromo shooting down this information.

    Thanks for the info.

OMG that Avril song is so damn catchy. I’ll be shocked if it doesn’t explode on radio. LOVE it!

I watched NY Rockin Eve last night and saw Avril’s performance. While I’m not a fan of hers, that song is very catchy, I was dancing to it so my guess is that it will be successful in the least and a smash at best.

Good find Steph re the CT concert. Going into Danny concert withdrawal. After 9 months of concerts every week (or multiple per week) it has been difficult not knowing what 2011 will bring.

I guess the Tampa Hockey game is sold out (20k) and the weather is nice. Hopefully a decent amount will stay to watch him- although it will be late (10pm) and a long evening for game goers.

Looks like Danny (The Wolf Den cap.300) will be competing against Rascal Flatts (Mohegun Sun Arena cap.10k) at the same venue, day & time for concert goers.

Happy New Year everyone! Especially to you, MJ — thanks so much for everything you do for us. :-)

  • Indigobunting

Wow, that is gutsy for Danny to go up against Rascall Flatts, lol!

Very small venue for him, true, but still a direct superstar country competitor!

  • asics85

I agree Indigobunting…Danny going up against Rascal Flatts is gutsy…and they are one of his personal favorites too!

The real question I thought of is will Danny sing the Rascal Flatts songs he usually does in his show (“What Hurts the Most” and “Life is a Highway”)? Now that would be gutsy with them in the same venue! But then he does do them so well I say go for it…lol! If I wasn’t on the other Coast I would so be there for this showdown!

  • steph6449

Looks like Danny (The Wolf Den cap.300) will be competing against Rascal Flatts (Mohegun Sun Arena cap.10k) at the same venue, day & time for concert goers.

    http://www.mohegansun.com/entertainment/schedule-of-events.html?page=8&

Lol, yes, I saw that. Knowing Danny’s love for Rascal Flatts, maybe he will want to finish his own show early so he can go to the arena and catch their set ;) Probably won’t work though if Danny will still be signing at the merch table after all his shows in 2011.

If the Wolf Den is 300-person capacity (didn’t look that up), it’s quite a bit smaller than Danny normally plays but it looked to me as if they book a lot of good acts into the Wolf Den venue, in addition to those who play the arena.

The following day, Danny is also doing a fairly intimate club in Annapolis MD (Rams Head On Stage), for an afternoon event which is even more unusual except for charity benefits. I wonder if Danny & co. are hitting some smaller clubs to try out some of his new material before the major tour season starts in the spring? Hope so, as one of those two February dates is near me and I’m hoping to go :)

  • tripp_ncwy

Both Jordin Sparks and Kara DioGuardi have played the Wolf Den. This is a free show for Danny so it is a good deal for anyone in the area. It’s a steal versus paying $85 or $115 for Rascal Flatts and you still get a very good show.

  • asics85

Wow… possibly new material and free for that Danny show at the Wolf Den? Maybe it’s not too far to travel from the West Coast for after all!

I have seen Danny perform live and you are right tripp_ncwy, it is a very good show!

  • girlygirl

At this point in time in his career, Danny likely has little to no say about where or when he gets booked. I wouldn’t call him “gutsy” just because he happens to be booked in the same venue on the same day as Rascal Flatts — this happens fairly often– a big name gets booked into the bigger of the venues, a less established act gets booked into the smaller venue. Sometimes the two acts might have fans in common, sometimes they are entirely different in musical style. And since it’s a free show for Danny, he really isn’t competiting for anyone’s ticket $$$

    JMO – YMMV

  • asics85

Oh just a little teasing with the “gutsy” comment girlygirl….I’m sure you are right about artists having little say in where and when they are booked.

It did make me smile though to see that Danny and Rascal Flatts end up on the same night/time knowing that Danny loves them and that he usually likes to cover some of their songs in concert too.

I hope you are right Steph, and he has new material ready by then to try out!

Yes, that is how they described in on their website for all the acts who play the Wolf Den. Presumably the acts get paid, but for the audience it’s a free part of the casino experience, I guess?

Yeah, I thought that was pretty funny when I saw who was also at that location the same evening. Not even just Rascal Flatts, who Danny loves and who seem to have made some effort to be supportive of him behind the scenes. But also Luke Bryan, who Danny toured with on the Sugarland tour last summer and seems friendly with; and Chris Young, label-mate and also someone Danny seems friendly with. There was a really funny interview on a radio program after one of the awards shows where Danny and Chris were both sharing their personal nerd stories from high school :)

Have been to Mohegan Sun more times than I ever want to admit. The Wolf Den is great exposure for who ever plays there. It is not closed in. Anyone in that part of the Casino can hear you & many more people sit on the outskirts to watch the show. I’ve heard lots of great singers there.Never made it over to SEE who was actually singing but I always ask around by the end of the night. A Friday night ought to be busy (depending on the weather). Will be many more than 300 ears, more in the thousands :) Rascal Flatts will be at the arena in the newer part of the Casino. Good for Danny :)

Max Martin. One of the producers that make ear candy.

I thought that Avril’s single sounded like a Pink song. I think that’s a problem with too few producers working for too many people. And I think he worked on Allison’s cd too, and that was the sound of hers too.

Didn’t really like the song though.

I’ve been to the Wolf Den too. I’ve been inside for a few shows, but it’s true you can watch and listen from the floor of the casino also. And it’s a totally free show, even if you get into the Wolf Den. The difference is that there are tables in the Wolf Den, and of course, you get closer. You do have to get there and get in line at least a couple of hours before, but they usually start letting people in about an hour before, to get the table, but then they give you a ticket if you want to go out into the casino after you are seated.

I might actually go to this, I did like Danny’s voice on the show, though I haven’t followed him that much after the show, not really a country fan, but am curious to see what he is doing.

I mean some of the songs that Allison did on her album sound like more of an Avril songs, or Pink. It makes sense because if they used the same producer, I believe Allison worked with Max Martin on some of her songs.

It’s good exposure because some country fans that are going to see Rascal Flatts might see him on the way to the arena. Except they should have Danny start before they do for it to really work. I was there once and there was a concert with a similar genre in both the Wolf Den and arena, and that’s what happened, though that show started an hour before the show in the arena. Though people could decide to see Danny instead if theres an opener for Rascal Flatts.

Mohegan Sun pays guests to sing at the Wolf Den to keep the gamblers entertained. They’re hired help for the night if you will. Mohegan isn’t going to “coordinate” the times to help Danny’s career. If Danny’s show starts before the bigger arena show, then it’s because it fits for Mohegan, not because it fits for Danny. He isn’t going to get a large crowd, even with minglers, IMO, but at least it’s exposure I guess.

Max Martin and Shellback produced “Friday I’ll Be Over You” and “Just Like You”. FIBOU was the most radio-friendly song on the album and when that one didn’t go anywhere, I kinda knew that the radio won’t give her a chance.

X FACTOR SUPREMO SIMON COWELL IN RAGE OVER CHERYL COLE

I can see the U.S. producers’ resistance to Cheryl being a judge on the American X-Factor. Why is Simon so intent on having Cheryl be a judge? I don’t see any special qualities or credentials that make her so indispensable.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

I can see the U.S. producers’ resistance to Cheryl being a judge on the American X-Factor. Why is Simon so intent on having Cheryl be a judge? I don’t see any special qualities or credentials that make her so indispensable.

Umm, let’s see … She is young and pretty, so Simon wants her to sit next to him on the panel. Her bambi eyes, perfect smile and dimples help even Simon look good sitting next to her.
Cheryl and Simon have great chemistry and Simon knows that the panel needs chemistry more than big stars.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Sure, Cheryl is young and pretty, but so are a zillion other women. I guess that when I wrote “special qualities or credentials”, I was referring to aspects other than merely physical attributes.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

What “special qualities or credentials” does she need to be a successful judge on the X Factor?

She is a pop star. She auditioned for Popstars and was chosen to be a member of a very successful girlband – Girls Aloud. Then she released two very successful solo albums. That’s more than enough to be a mentor and a judge on the show that wants to produce popstars.

She is also a great TV personality.

She is more or less unknown in the US, right. But so what? X Factor has 4 judges. Simon and the producers can still cast two more well known judges. I could see the problem if Simon brought 3 completely unknown judges – but he only wants Cheryl. I actually think that one more unknown judge could be good for the show. You know, the element of surprise.

  • Moria Polonius

Umm, let’s see … She is young and pretty, so Simon wants her to sit next to him on the panel. Her bambi eyes, perfect smile and dimples help even Simon look good sitting next to her.

I confess that Cheryl creeps me out. During contestants’ performances she always looks like she’s listening to angels singing, like she’s having a musical revelation, no matter what’s being sung.

I actually think that one more unknown judge could be good for the show. You know, the element of surprise.

I agree. If people think the fame she doesn’t have is not a factor in her being a judge and that Simon Cowell vouches for her, she may be seen as credible.

  • Indigobunting

Though people could decide to see Danny instead if there’s an opener for Rascal Flatts

Yes, they definitely could if they wanted to. Luke Bryan and Chris Young are the openers for R. Flatts. So you could see Danny’s whole set and still see Rascal Flatts.

Luke Bryan and Chris Young are pretty big names in their own right; both have had #1 hits and are quite popular. So there is no way a significant amount of people would skip them to see Danny, IMO.
But, I could see some of Rascal Flatts pop (non- country) fans doing that if they were aware of Danny’s performance, because Luke and Chris are definitely more on the traditional side of Country vs. Danny and R. Flatts who are pop country.

I hope you decide to go KarenC; I don’t think you will regret it.
