Reality check: Ratings drop for competition shows – Competition reality series are singing the blues again. Ratings for Fox’s American Idol are down about 19% overall — and nearly 30% among young-adult viewers, marking its third consecutive season of steep declines. The return of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars last week dipped by 1.6 million viewers from last spring’s strong start. And CBS’ The Amazing Race is down 14% this season. Even NBC’s newer hit The Voice is a bit pitchy, though it has eclipsed Idol as the most-watched singing show. Although Monday episodes are up 6% overall — it returned in late February after the Olympics, a month earlier than last year — they’re down 15% among the show’s target young-adult audience, so the crowd is graying. – Read more at USA Today
