The American Idol XIII Green Mile episode comes to a conclusion tonight. The Top 30 will be mostly revealed. YOU will have the opportunity to vote in the 30th member! 8/9c pm.

‘The Voice’ Winner Tessanne Chin Signs With ICM Partners – The Voice’s reigning champion Tessanne Chin has signed with ICM Partners, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The powerhouse vocalist from Adam Levine’s team won season five of NBC’s hit singing competition in December. During the show, she was the only contestant to hit No. 1 on iTunes’ song chart — a feat she accomplished twice, with her semifinals cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and her finale performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” Watch a video of her victory-clinching live performance below. – Read more at The Hollywood Reporter

Muskogee country music duo, Voice finalists The Swon Brothers visit Sochi for Winter Olympics – SOCHI, Russia – Some familiar faces from Muskogee are taking in the Olympic Games in Sochi. The Swon Brothers, of NBC’s “The Voice” fame, traveled to Russia with the network that helped influence their rise to fame. Zach and Colton tell 2NEWS they are spending their time playing at private parties. “We’re running into people that want to support us and get on board early,” said Colton. “It’s a very big blessing, actually.” The brothers are also taking in as many events as possible. Colton, for example, watched the USA’s Sage Kotsenburg win a gold medal in the men’s snowboard slopestyle. Read more at KJRH

How Usher Feels About Working With Blake Shelton On ‘The Voice’ – “I’m hoping that Blake can become complacent and that he’s not as hungry as he normally is,” Usher joked in the exclusive video above, adding that he has a new approach and “picked a few things up from him.”

James Wolpert’s first show after ‘The Voice’ at American Music Theatre – He’s getting ready to perform a concert with his “Voice” cast-mate, Cole Vosbury, at the American Music Theatre Saturday and Sunday. (Saturday’s show nearly sold out, so the Sunday show was added.) “I am going to be doing a selection of my favorite songs from ‘The Voice,’ and some I wish I’d had the opportunity to do,” Wolpert said during a recent interview. “And I have had a few songs in my back pocket for a while. I have a home studio thing going on and I am recording a few songs.” – Read more at Lancaster Online

Ryan Seacrest to Launch First-Ever Fashion Collection – It’s no surprise Ryan Seacrest is one of Hollywood’s busiest men — juggling between his hosting gigs (American Idol, On Air With Ryan Seacrest) and producing shows through his company (Ryan Seacrest Productions), among many other jobs — but despite his hectic schedule, he always manages to keep up a dapper appearance. To help guide others with the same well-groomed look, Seacrest is adding another venture to his resume: a men’s clothing line called Ryan Seacrest Distinction. – Read more at Hollywood Reporter

According to the Sun, Nicole Scherzinger is leaving X Factor UK. Also, Cheryl Cole posted a photo of herself and Simon on XF UK today on instagram as Throwback Thursday photo.

I am hoping we get some official news sooner rather than later.

  • nncw

I would go to a show with James and Cole if they came to a venue near me. I thought they would be a great combo – hope they stay together as a band.

Queen guitarist Brian May told VVN that he and drummer Roger Taylor are in talks about an upcoming summer tour, including numerous possible date in the U.S., with 2009 “American Idol” runner-up, vocal powerhouse and major fan of original Queen singer Freddie Mercury, Adam Lambert.

  • justmefornow

From last night’s show in Denver, James singing Love Me Bad.
Okay, it’s never been my favorite song, but James has finally found a way to sing it acoustically to change my mind.

    Well done Mr. Durbin.

  • Marko

    Yay, can’t wait.

  • Matthew Richards

I wonder if Tessanne actually will release a rock record. That would be interesting to hear.

  • curlyenta

Taylor Hicks will make an appearance on the Craig Ferguson Show on Wednesday, February 26!

    “2006 “Idol” winner Chris Daughtry”

    heh

  • roarpen

James Durbin singing an acoustic version of Don’t Stop Believing – lovely.

  • roarpen

Big big huge improvement but I will probably always hate this song. I heard another acoustic version of it once that was really beautiful. The song that is really stuck in my head is Children Under the Sun. That song is fantastic. He calls it his “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” I hope that won’t keep him from releasing it as a single sometime – he slays it.

  • JLE12

I know. Why is it so hard to look up who won?

  • justmefornow

I can’t get over how much better he keeps getting, show after show. Loved the sing-a-long with the audience :)

  • justmefornow

I feel the same way about Children Under The Sun, it’s become my favorite of the new ones. I hope the full production on the album doesn’t f*ck it up. (Yes, it should totally be his next single, the drug references are subtle and pretty mild, IMO)

How FUN!! Proof he’s ready to get a larger audience right in the palm of his hands again—this was great! He will soon be known for his excellent guitar playing along w/that voice. He needs to throw out any thoughts of what happens at 40 or 50—he’s 25 & his time is now. Like it a lot, hard to tell–apologies in advance.

Randy Jackson on Idol and Adam/Chris –
“they were actually in the trenches as people we were judging, so they could [give advice] it from a completely different side.”

  • roarpen

Great interview in which Durbin states that Issues will be the last song about his “issues.” It’s a great song, and focuses on the fact that everyone has issues – but that is the last we will be hearing about it in his music, although he will continue to support Tourette’s, Asperger’s and anti-bullying causes:

  • DragonFly

Here goes the repeat, repeat button.

  • curlyenta

“in the trenches as people we were judging, so they could give advice from a completely different side”?
    —————–
Wha? Sorry, I don’t even begin to understand that statement. Maybe someone could explain that piece of nonsense? Why are they in any unique position to give advice? You’d think they’d want a winner on to more appropriately explain that successful journey and how to get there … not someone who placed 2nd and 4th.

  • Marko

Not being a hater but when you say “a winner” the first person I can think of is Lee DeWyze.

  • mel432

It’s easy to have the impression that Daughtry won because he was/is so much more successful than the winner.

  • HermeticallySealed

And yet, both are more successful than some winners.

The statement seemed pretty straight forward to me. They were in the same spot as the contestants, they know what the kids will be going through, therefore, they are perfectly capable of advising them on what to expect over the course of the season. They both also went on to have good careers, so they both understand the business aspect as well.

This isn’t situation where only one option was acceptable.

  • curlyenta

We’re not talking about post-Idol success. If that was the goal, might as well get Carrie and Kelly on to mentor, eh?

These “mentors” are supposedly giving advice on how to win the show – unless I’m making a presumption that is incorrect. Neither of them did.

Every winner was also a “contestant”, so why not get a “2 in 1″, not just one of the losers.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Maybe someone could explain that piece of nonsense?

Here we go. “They were in the trenches” = they went through actually doing what people do on the show. This Yahoo Answer explains it correctly: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100626122725AAMARSv

“as people we were judging” = Daughtry and Lambert were both competitors who were judged on the show. (Daughtry was S5 and Lambert was S8.)

“so they could give advice from a completely different perspective” = their advice comes from experiences unlike those of a person who’s never been through that kind of competition. With the exception of Urban’s long-ago abortive try-out for some Australian competition, the judges really have no experience as competitors on a reality singing show.

For Jackson-speak, it’s downright coherent and pithy.

  • HermeticallySealed

You are indeed incorrect. It was stated that they were there to advise them on what they can expect during the show, the pressures from the media, how to handle fans, etc..

The problem thinking you can give any advice on “how to win,” is that there isn’t any that works. There is no such thing as a road map to winning. Most of it is pure luck. Is it looks? Song choice? Lighting and staging? There have been several winners who made bad song choices, questionable staging, or weren’t considered conventionally “Good looking.” So in what way is it genuinely advantageous to get a winner over a successful non-winner?

ETA: I DO think that they should get a past female contestant to mentor at some point, as there are definitely different pressures and expectations for female contestants.

  • DragonFly

Not suggesting this was a larger audience –referring to Idol days & festivals we witnessed.

  • curlyenta

LOL! Right, for Randy Jackson, that’s brilliant ;)
But for all his train-wreck euphemisms, he – and Paula – did make a correct decision back in ’06 to send my fave on to the top 24 and ultimately, win. I’ll always have a soft spot for him.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

I have just posted a transcript of Randy’s interview today in a separate post.

He had so much more to say than just stuff that would incite a fan war. ;). We are in a new season of Idol, after all.

I hope you guys read the full interview and comment on it.

BUT LEAVE THE FAN WAR HERE PLEASE.

ETA: No really, I will ban anyone who decides to re-hash old wounds in the new thread.

  • Larc

Something tells me Lee wasn’t the specific winner in mind. ;)

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

ANY of the Idols are in a position to impart wisdom to these kids, because they’ve been through the process! A non-winner also has the useful perspective of illustrating that there is life after Idol, even if you DON’T win. Nothing wrong with that.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

He went out 4th how do you miss that? LOL.

People who don’t follow AI. I know someone who actually semi-watches every season, and she doesn’t remember many of the winners.

  • lovetheusa1776

You sent this to me, mj – hope you are not saying I’m trying to “incite a fan war.” Was never my intention.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

Except that it’s a reporter, who I assume watched season 5?

There was such an uproar in the media after Daughtry was “robbed”…how do you forget that? lol.

  • lovetheusa1776

Good article – love the bottom pic.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

No. Not saying that. Just putting it in a place where everyone will read it. :)

  • curlyenta

I was under the impression that they were giving advice about strategies on the ultimate goal of winning the show. Wrong presumption, I guess, eh?My bad.

I think giving advice about post Idol life is really early in the game for these people, since we haven’t even completed the top 30. Strange, IMO. We’ll see how it plays out next week.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Yeah, but they’re not responsible for interviewing Idols and writing articles on them.

Google and Wikipedia aren’t exactly obscure tools that a normal print reporter would never have heard of.

  • HermeticallySealed

Sheer laziness. I can see thinking it,but to not fact check before putting it out there? Ugh.

  • http://www.mjsbigblog.com/ mjsbigblog

I was under the impression that they were giving advice about strategies on the ultimate goal of winning the show.

I sat in on the actual interview and heard Randy discuss the mentors with my own ears. He never said he was teaching the hopefuls how to win. He and the alums are helping the kids navigate the process, which at times, can be intimidating and overwhelming.

Not sure how you’re coming away from these interviews with that particular take away.

  • Jordana33

Thanks for posting the article on James Wolpert. Even though his songs choices weren’t always great, I though he had one of the best male voices on the show. A concert with him and Cole sounds like fun.

Glad to see that Tessanne is now signed. I don’t know much about ICM partners, but hopefully they’ll do a better job of promoting her than Universal records did with prior winners.

  • bridgette12

Sounds like there are going to be dates in the States and also abroad

  • Adrian Sewell

Tessanne also tweeted recently that she’ll be working with Dianne Warren in the studio also. I’m very excited for her.

  • bridgette12

The ultimate goal of going on this show is to be noticed by a label and continue your singing career after Idol. What Chris and Adam will tell them that you have one performance each week to make a statement and be remembered for that performance. So leave everything on the stage and don’t half ass it through the performances. Also let them know, that their dreams don’t have to end no matter if they or lose. You take advantages of opportunities and grow as a person and a artist.

  • jan

There are 31 contestants they are working with – only 1 will be the ultimate winner. So the mentors advice is for all the contestants – to help them be the best they can be – and make the most of the process.

  • Larc

Sold Out is great! The Gillioz in Springfield has reserved seating for 1015 or can accommodate 1300 general admission.

  • girlygirl

I was a journalism major and reporters/editors not bothering to fact check (or have someone else fact check) articles before printing them is a huge pet peeve of mine. It would literally take them 10 seconds to google American Idol winners to find a list for every season. It’s just pure laziness.

  • Anny_nanny

    Marco Meneghin ?@MarcoMeneghin

If you’re in the Bay Area, I’ll be playing tonight to @yoshisSF_OAK with @LeeDeWyze and @trumpetjory. We’re gonna bring it (acoustically).

  • standtotheright

It’s precisely *because* it’s early that it makes sense. Once they get to voting stages, they have to start relying on the public’s perception of them, and even semi-finalists leaving the show will be dealing with local press and fielding potential entertainment opportunities when they get home. The ones who do advance to the finals are going to be too busy keeping their heads above water to try and learn the performance and media skills they didn’t have already.

  • mel432

Randy hopes to hold this type of boot camp for future shows. It was wise of him to choose both Chris and Adam the first year. I think in the future he will probably have Kelly and Carrie (but not necessarily the same year). I think other good teachers would be Clay (if he is not being a politician), Cook, and Kris. Lee would be very interesting.

  • thirdtime

Great news! Not only about the Conan show, but I like Blake, he’s the cute guitar player, right? That’s fantastic news! With Blake back it feels like the old band is back together.

  • roarpen

    Oops, this was already posted.

  • justmefornow

Yup. I hope that means he’s back too. Very sweet guy, very similar to Justin they would probably get along great.
Dylan was always the odd man out, and a little arrogant, lol.

  • mel432

What’s more important? Winning or having long-term success?

  • stillcrazy2195

Scotty was also in KC Missouri this week, playing at a 21+ club called VooDoo Lounge at the Harrahs Casino. Although I did not go, I heard from several who did that it was a great show and none of them are Idol watchers nor particularly into country music. These friends happen to be regulars at the casino and got comped for his show. They all came away with a favorable impression of Scotty.

  • macfae

I would go see them too. James was my favorite but I also liked Cole

  • DragonFly

Good news that Blake is coming back. He really worked hard w/James through all of this so far & seems nice. Conan was really great w/James & band #1 last time, so this is good too.

  • macfae

happy to see something about what’s happening with James. He said their would be EPs available at the shows. I hope he makes those available for sale online too.

  • Liteasy

I don’t know any winner that isn’t having success.

  • mel432

I’m talking about Chris and Adam level success. They are more successful than the winners from their season, which gives them more than ample qualifications for mentoring. Altho I think Kris would also be a good mentor.

@Cashonktts: Dang, y’all… @ScottyMcCreery has grown so much as an artist in the last couple years. Real impressed with his show. #SeeYouTonight

@Cashonktts: Next time I introduce myself to an audience, I expect the ladies to scream as loud as they did when @ScottyMcCreery introduced himself. Wow.

Both. With Interscope, now it’s much more difficult to get a record deal with a major label unless you win. The contract for the runner-up was modified in Season 11.

Because they are not really losers. They have achieved success despite not being the winner of their seasons.

This is true. It’s also now quite obvious that Interscope’s willingness to invest in a major-label-level strategy isn’t necessarily there, even *for* a winner. Having finalists who can discuss how to network without the assumed resources behind the contract is now pretty much applicable to every contestant, even the winner.
