Clay Aiken shoots ‘True’ with an album drawn from the classics

“We definitely had an era we wanted to hold onto, and the Rat Pack wasn’t it, although it’s very close, ” he said. “Michael Bublé is a good friend of mine, but I felt there was a faction of that ’50s and ’60s era that he wasn’t tapping into. There’s a coolness that comes from the Rat Pack, and I’m not going to kid anybody by thinking I’m the coolest person in the room.

“Guys like Perry Como and Andy Williams who had a very different vibe. Songs like ‘Unchained Melody’ and ‘Moon River’ and ‘Misty’ — those are the songs I gravitated toward most, the love songs from the ’50s and ’60s. And so the question became, how do we fill in around them?”

Sanjaya Malakar talks off-Broadway debut, first full-length album, and new ‘American Idol’ panel

“It’s a kids’ book, but the story pertains to everyone. It’s about people with insecurities, and everyone at some point has some kind of insecurity, ” Malakar told EW this afternoon before heading to his first rehearsal. (He arrived in New York yesterday.) He’ll take on the role of Danny through May 28. “He’s the jock in school. He’s cool. Everyone thinks he’s awesome. He’s good at all the sports and gets all the girls. But really, he’s just like everyone else. He wants to be smarter. Everyone wants to be a little different than what they are. But in the end, you realize that you’re perfect just the way that you were made, ” he says. Danny excels at basketball, and, fortunately, it’s the one sport Malakar played. “I played basketball a little bit, but I was never really amazing, ” he clarifies. “It’s definitely some work getting the choreography down, but I enjoy a challenge like that. We’re dribbling to the beat. I have dribbled a basketball in my day, so it makes it a little easier.” If Danny is “cool, ” does that mean we could see a return of the infamous pony hawk? Malakar has yet to discuss Danny’s hairstyle with producers. “I would assume that it would be a little more mild because the show is about a group of 7-year-olds in school, ” he says, laughing. “I assume it would be however 7-year-olds wear their hair.”

‘Glee’ Creator Ryan Murphy Being Eyed To Direct ‘Annie’ Remake

With Will Smith looking to launch daughter Willow’s film career with a remake of “Annie, ” it only makes sense that he would turn to the man who helped repopularize the musical genre for the American audience to help him. Enter “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy, who Deadline.com reports is in negotiations to direct the project.

In addition to his work with “Glee, ” Murphy is as highly regarded at Sony Pictures — the studio that’s overseeing the “Annie” remake — as Smith is, which is likely what helped him land the gig. He directed this past summer’s Julia Roberts drama “Eat, Pray, Love” for Sony, and the studio was so impressed with him that they signed a $5 million deal for him to direct another picture with the movie star. And Murphy’s success with songs from musicals like “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Wicked” has led him to be courted to helm film versions of those productions as well.
