Whoo hoo! I love me some David Letterman, so this next item is awesome news!

Via UPI

NEW YORK, March 19 (UPI) — Contestants voted off “American Idol” each week will make their first late-night talk show appearances on “Late Show with David Letterman,” CBS said.

The castoffs are to appear every Monday, beginning March 22 with recently eliminated contestant Lacey Brown.

The winner of this season’s competition will also perform on “Late Show” the Monday after he or she earns the title, the network said.

Letterman hasn’t had Idol castoffs on his show since Season 3. Back then, the kids hung out at the Rupert Gee Deli next door, as Letterman interviewed them via remote camera.

I wasn’t surprised when the Idols stopped appearing the following year. Heh.

I’m, like, a David Letterman tard. LOL. I’m in fangirl heaven. Heh.

They used to appear on Leno’s Tonight Show, right? Interesting turn of events. I like Letterman better anyway.

Guess I’m in the minority here. I Prefer Jay Leno!! Ellen is sure promoting Idol on her show and her ratings are apparently up. She has had castoffs in the past but now she talks about the show and other judges. At least now she won’t be promoting her favorite like she used to with Simon. I’m glad for the castoffs getting extra publicity. I really feel bad for contestants 11 and 12 since they are booted off right before the 10 spot that ensures the tour, salary etc.

What happened to the deli guy? I don’t watch Dave regularly but once in awhile and the deli guy, Rupert I guess, was on a lot. Last time I went to NYC (it’s been awhile) the deli was closed and I wanted to buy a tee shirt there…

    Anybody know?

  • ladymadonna

Awesome, awesome news. I love Letterman and this is the perfect post-boot gig for the the Idols. I had forgotten about the remotes from the deli in the earl seasons – good stuff.

  • sylvanaire

MJ, what do you mean, you weren’t surprised when they stopped appearing there the next season? I wasn’t watching Idol then, and never watched any late night TV either. Did Letterman humiliate them or something? TIA for clarification! *smile*

Wow, you mean AI will pay for the cast off plane ticket to New York ? I mean, it is really great for them.
So, will they appear on both Ellen (in LA) and Letterman ?

  • jobbix

Does this mean that the castoffs get couch time with Dave this year? I find it hard to believe. Dave is only interested in “quality comedy” and this year’s contestants are rather bland. Any body still remembers the Crying Girl and the Ponyhawk? :-) Dave had a blast with that.

Idol castoffs spend several days in NYC making the rounds of all the talk shows. But like I said in the post, Letterman hasn’t had castoffs on his show since Season 3.

Well, except for Sanjaya, who read the Top 10 list after he was eliminated…:)

In fact, the Kris and Adam appearances this past fall were the first for newly-minted Idols in about as long.

For several years, Letterman had NO Idols on his show at all, except for the ones like Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry and Jennifer–after they became big stars in their own right.

Did Letterman humiliate them or something? TIA for clarification! *smile*

I wouldn’t call it humiliation, but I thought his attitude was a little dismissive. Funny as hell, though.

Letterman seems more than a little bit full of himself, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he treats the contestants like garbage… LOL

I remember Letterman being very snobby and dismissive in regards to AI. THis seemed hypocritical to me since I remember when he was trying to break into the business. He consistently stunk up the stage at the Comedy Store here. I often wondered if he had any clue who a lot of the people in that audience were. Consensus was he should go back to Indiana or stick to writing. He was very lucky that Johnny Carson took him under his wing.

Last year I was surprised to see he had Kris and Adam on his show and figured he finally caved trying to capitalize on the AI audience and boost ratings. His fairly recent embracing of Kelly, Carrie, and Daughtry was a step in the right direction. It’s interesting that he’s getting first dibs on the late night circuit with the cast-offs.

I channel surf between Leno and Letterman if I’m up to watching at that time. I’ll get to see the appearances online either way, here or at their sites.

Is Lacey Brown really going to get a sit down with Letterman? I’m sure he’ll just use them for some comic relief or something. Good luck Dave squeezing some humor out of the S9 cast.

  • bean99

I’m not a Letterman fan and would rather they appear on Leno. I guess it’s good for them though.

  • Blond Mom

I used to like Letterman, but he has gotten increasingly snarky with his guests…but obviously a corporate decision. It’s a ratings war.

Maybe they will perform at the end of the show, with no interview

Well considering the talent (or lack there of) of the contestants on Idol this year that should be the comic highlight of the night.

I had heard that there was some kind of an agreement that new Idols and eliminated Idols could only be on either Leno or Letterman, but not both. Is this still true? Does this mean Leno is out? Well, I hope so. Sorry, but that whole Conan/Leno thing was so wrong and I won’t watch the Tonight Show as a result. Now Letterman, on the other hand, I think is great. And he has a real high caliber of musical talent on his show, often featuring more Indie bands. I think this is a great move. Maybe this means David Cook will finally be able to perform on Letterman when his new album comes out. I hope so.

Lacey was great performing on Ellen, maybe you missed that Tess?

  • riaspark17

Wow this sucks. Letterman seems like he doesn’t give two crackerjacks about Idol, and Leno’s probably the same but Leno at least appears friendly and more interested in his guests regardless. Besides, doesn’t Leno have a bigger audience?

I used to love Letterman but he really hasn’t done anything new in years and now he’s just a cranky old man. I’m not a fan of Leno either as his jokes are way too obvious. Jimmy Kimmel is where it’s at. He records his show at night, after American Idol has aired. On those nights he jokes about it for up to 5 minutes, showing clips of the show etc. He does a lot of stuff about American Idol and other reality shows and all things pop culture. Not to mention his videos for “I’m f’ing Matt Damon & Ben Affleck” etc. Having the Idol castoffs on his show would be hilarious.

Since Leno has been back, I think he’s been beating Dave, but not by much–not as much as in the old days.

I checked the schedule, and the booted Idols are not scheduled for Leno. Thank God, that’s less Leno I’ll be forced to watch because of Idol.

Kimmel is okay (and some of his bits are inspired), but honestly, Ferguson is the only, I repeat ONLY, late-night talk show host whom I consider worth his airtime (and that was still the case when CO’B was on the air). He actually knows how to engage with his guests and how to write monologues that consistently make me laugh.

Letterman does get better musical guests than Leno, but that’s about the only appeal to his show, IMO.

  • heidijoy

Jimmy Fallon has them all beat as far as talent and genuine likeability but for now I’ll stick with Leno, then Fallon. As an older fan, Conan replacing Leno was like a forced retirement like K mart does with their managers. at last report Leno was drawing 6 million and Letterman 4 million. Conan is rumored to be going on tour. In any case whatever exposure these Idol castoffs can get is good.

I dislike snarky, old, cranky, sexist Letterman, and I always have. Jay is better, Kimmel a sexist bore at least with his stupid Gwirmo and all that . . . and why is Craig Ferguson sooooo overlooked? Not a breath is ever uttered about him, and he’s the funniest, most brilliant and creative of them all. Craig should host the awards shows, and be a judge on Idol. He loves music and knows a lot about it.

Craig would treat the Idols right and have us laughing the whole time.
