Here it is! This week’s Idol Billboard Update

Highlights:

  • Big drops for the Idols on the Billboard 200 this week. Carnival Ride, from 19-29, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Jordin Sparks from 27-50, Daughtry, from 33-54, Chris Daughtry, Some Hearts, Carrie Underwood from 70-84 and On My Way Here, Clay Aiken from 106-162. This, despite sales being up 4.6% from last week, according to Billboard.
  • Carrie Underwood’s latest single, “Last Name” jumps from 5 to the #1 spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. According to Billboard, “Last Name” is her “sixth chart-topper in less than three years and her fourth No. 1 in a row, not counting holiday and charity releases.” Also, Carrie is “the first solo female artist to have four consecutive No. 1s on the country survey in almost 20 years, since Rosanne Cash had a string of six No. 1 titles between 1987-89.” Good stuff for Carrie!
  • David Cook’s “Time of My Life” drops from 9-20 on the Hot 100, 13-29 on the Pop 200 and 3-10 and 4-10 on the Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Song charts, respectively. However, it’s climbed from 21-15 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and from 31-21 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart, due to radio play in these formats.
  • Clay Aiken’s single, “On My Way Here”, debuts on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart at #29.
  • Blake Lewis’s “How Many Words” debuts on the Hot Dance Club Play chart at #48.

I’m confused that the runners-up are listed above for every season except S1.

If that’s the case, then what is David Archuleta’s “single”?

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m confused that the runners-up are listed above for every season except S1.

Justin Guarini did not have a coronation single, that’s why there isn’t one listed.

Like Season 1, David Archuleta will not have a coronation single. His first single will be released right before his album drops.

I am surprised that they decided not to release a single for David A. like they did for almost all the previous runners up … do you have any insight as to why?

  • gelfling

I’m not sure about Kelly but Clay and Ruben had physical single CDs that were priced at about 5 dollars for 2 songs, which is comparable to the EP price for Fantasia and Diana. Their singles were not available for digital download. I haven’t checked but they are most likely still not for sale digitally to count for added single sales since 2003.

I really don’t. I think they should have. It gives the fans something until the album comes out, at the very least. I can’t imagine why they decided to do things differently this year.

I’ve seen rumors that the plans are to release a single during the summer. Nothing that seems to have official support.

I think what’s different this year for Archie was the iTunes factor. He sold lots of downloads and I Believe his ersatz coronation song In This Moment (the original song chosen for the final competition night) sold 61 K or more. His total downloads for the two weeks after the finale was 321K.

The massive amounts of downloads for the idols in the preceding weeks probably negated the need for a coronation single for Archie.

He’s lucky, though, they could have released the cheesy In This Moment. Instead, he will hopefully have a radio-friendly single that hits the pop charts.

Based on Ken’s numbers, David Cook sold an astounding 1,121,000 downloads the week including the idol finale.

He sold another 364,000 downloads the following week. He sold another 80,000 copies of Time of My Life this week, so his total since his coronation week is
    1,525,000.

    That’s impressive.

My count was a little different from those numbers:

    Week one — 944000
    Week two — 239000
    Week three — 80000
    Total — 1,263,000

Still impressive, especially given that a lot of people had already bought copies of his older stuff like Billie Jean and ABMB before the first week of reporting.

  • lovegoodmusic

Does anyone know how many downloads there were for David Cook’s coronation song? Thanks for the information.

  • Lu

Eventhough I’m a David Cook fan I couldn’t bring myself to download TOML. I’m really looking forward to his “real” music. :) I’ll probably never download an AI coronation song – blech.

David’s Coronation song numbers (from the Billboard Update Chart I posted)

    0 David Cook à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Time of My Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 79,800 (-51%; lw 163,287) Total: 479,111 (4)

“Time of My Life” has sold 479,111 downloads so far

    Mj,
This might be a silly question, but are those numbers posted above how many each Idol has sold in total as of last year?

So Based on David Cook’s numbers so far, he has sold more in 3 weeks than Bo,Diana, Kat, Blake and Jordin sold in total?

  • lovegoodmusic

Thank you MJ for answering my question. I think its pretty impressive that Cook’s song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Time of My Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has sold 479,111 downloads, and I think it is safe to assume that this song will hit gold soon.

Also, I heard that the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Time of My Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ will be on his first album, but I am curious if Cook’s newer version (the version he sang on Leno) or this one will be on the first album.

Thank you for providing this information.

    Yes.

That’s a good question. The current version was recorded quickly, perhaps he will re-record it.
