This week’s Idol Billboard Update, at a much more reasonable length!

The only Season 7 singles that remain on this week’s chart are the iTunes downloads that were released on the day after the finale. By next week, the performance singles, which are no longer available, will be off the chart as well. The only Season 7 single left to track will be David Cook’s “Time of My Life”, and by the looks of it, the Magic Rainbow won’t be disappearing any time soon! Heh.

Highlights

  • David Cook’s “Time of My Life” falls from #3 to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100, from #6 to #13 on the Pop 100, from #1 to #3 on the Hot Digital Tracks, and #1 t0 #4 on the Hot Digital Songs. However, it climbs the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, from #30 to #21, and it debuted on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, at #31. Looks like the track is getting most of it’s spins on AC radio stations. This week, 163,287 more downloads were sold, for a total of 399,311.
  • Jordin Spark’s “No Air” debuts on the Hot Dance Club Play chart at #46. And, look at what’s the #2 club hit the past two weeks, “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow”, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.
  • Josh Gracin’s “We Weren’t Crazy” climbs into the Top 20 of the Hot Country Songs chart at #19.
  • Elliott Yamin’s “Wait for You” climbs to the #5 spot on the Japan Hot 100 singles chart.

Go Cookie! I wonder if the tour will do anything for sales of Skittles song. Personally, I hope that fifth song is a new cut from his upcoming CD.

  • sherryw

Congrats to Cookie for being the first Idol to chart on the Adult Top 40 airplay chart with a coronation song. Can’t wait to see what he can do with “real” music!

  • jpfan

Kelly Clarkson charted on the Adult Top 40 chart with A Moment Like This. I’m too lazy to look up the other coronation singles but wouldn’t be surprised if a few of them charted there as well.

  • littlesparrow

Kellie was all over radio with “A Moment Like This”, so I’m sure she hit Top 40. Pretty sure Ruben and Clay got up there, too. Cookie’s doing okay, all things considering.

  • sherryw

According to billboard.com, Kelly was the only one to chart on both AC and Top 40 (not Adult Top 40). Ruben and Clay both charted on AC. Fantasia’s coronation song is not listed as having hit an airplay chart. Carrie charted on AC and country. Taylor charted on AC. Jordin did not hit an airplay chart. DC has now charted on AC and HAC, making him the third winner to chart in 2 airplay formats with the coronation song and the first on HAC.
If these stats are wrong, someone should inform Billboard.

  • Jenn_AI Fan

This may be a silly question, but what are the differences between AC and Adult Top 40?

  • jpfan

Stats for A Moment Like This: I’m a little confused by HAC and Adult Top 40 charts myself. I think Cook may have the highest charting coronation single on the Hot Adult Top 40 chart (whatever that is). Kelly charted on 4 charts including HAC according to this.

    U.S. Billboard Hot 100 1
    U.S. Billboard Top 40 Tracks 8
    U.S. Billboard Top 40 Mainstream 4
U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks 27
U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks 4

JP Fan is right. “A Moment Like This” charted on the Hot Adult Top 40, I looked it up in the Billboard chart archive. David Cook is not the first.

The difference between Hot AC and AC:

Your local “Mix” station is Hot AC, while your “Magic” station is AC.

  • Trina

I think Cook may have the highest charting coronation single on the Hot Adult Top 40 chart (whatever that is).

He is and Hot Adult Top = Hot AC

but “The Time of My Life” manages a record-breaking debut at No. 31 on the Adult Top 40. It’s the highest opening for a career-starting single by a solo male there.

Also, I would think ads like this are done and paid for by the label? I have no idea what’s supposed to be considered good airplay but for me stats like #1 gainer at Adult and most added at Pop (top 40?) looks impressive. http://www.mediabase.com/WebLogon/WebLogon.asp

This is the Billboard chart history to which I was referring http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/retrieve_chart_history.do
The only point that I was trying to make is that radio seems to be rather receptive to Cookie. As of the afternoon Mediabase update, TOML sits at:
    #47 in pop
    #14 in AC
    #23 in HAC
I think this bodes well for his future singles.
If this is frowned upon, I apologize.
