‘Idol’ alum Kellie Pickler charms fans at State Fair

Kellie Pickler must be the envy of every American Idol also-ran.

The sixth-place finisher has somehow escaped the obscurity that most alums are dumped into soon after their seasons are up. Instead, the perky Ms. Pickler, who’s had three top-15 singles and is promoting a new album, was the headliner at the State Fair of Texas Sunday night.

The crowd of a few hundred stood for the hourlong show, during which Ms. Pickler showed off her ditzy charm.

“My shirt keeps blowin’ up and I’m thinking, ‘Whoa!’ ” she said as the wind swirled around her. “But I’m covered up underneath. Lucky for you.”

JLC, London, ON – October 6, 2008

LONDON, Ontario – Carrie’s country carnival ride had thousands along for the hits at the John Labatt Centre last night.

With about 9,000 fans jamming the London arena, U.S. country superstar Carrie Underwood hit the stage with Flat on the Floor from her hit album Carnival Ride.

The fans thundered out the final seconds of a big-screen countdown before a virtual Underwood emerged in faux leather in a video of a desert scene.

Carrie comes to town

For the Kansas Expocentre, a nearly packed house is almost unheard of.

On Tuesday, when Little Big Town and Carrie Underwood came to Topeka, the trend of underachieving crowd support was snapped like a twig.

The stage was set at the north end of Landon Arena, with a catwalk jutting into the audience on the floor. Peering around the arena, it looked as though most of the seats in the stands had been filled, except for the upper corners. However, taking into account the masses who sat floor level where the Koyotes and RoadRunners usually play, there were undoubtedly enough people in attendance to fill the rest of the seats.

Exclusive Interview: Tony Dovolani of ‘Dancing with the Stars’

Arguably, the best part of watching Dancing with the Stars is the cadre of professional dancers who are tasked to teach celebrities who have never danced before to compete in a televised ballroom competition. Over the seven seasons of the show’s existence, we’ve gotten to know these dancing pros and have watched them in awe as they flawlessly perform week after week. They are class acts, these dancers, for their dedication to the show, to their craft and to us, their fans.

One of these special dancers is Tony Dovolani. I got the chance to talk to him about the journey he has been through with his partner Susan Lucci this season.

‘Dancing With the Stars’: An injured Misty May-Treanor, and a chat with Lance Bass

Fans, this seems already to have been a perilous season for “DWTS” dancers. First, Jeffrey Ross sustained a scratched cornea, forcing him to wear an eyepatch during his brief stay on the show. Second, pro Karina Smirnoff twisted her ankle and had to sport an Ace bandage that was at least two shades lighter than her spray tan. And now comes word that Misty May-Treanor suffered an ankle injury — not a broken ankle, as some reports claimed — and her status is uncertain. We’ll get an update on tonight’s show.

In happier news, today I interviewed Lance Bass during a break between his rehearsals.

Dancing With The Stars: Week 3

(S07E06) Week three did not get off to a great start down at Dancing With The Stars HQ. The ten performances we were expecting had been reduced to nine. It seems that while training on Friday night, Misty May-Treanor suffered an injury that would keep her from performing as part of the top ten.

Thanks, DWTS post-production audio specialists, for amping up the volume of the pop for extra horror! God, I never want to hear that sound again. And, sickeningly, I know I’m not the only one who rewound it. Details is actually a men’s version of Vogue. So it is DC’s target audience.

    But yeah, ouch.

  • MrsTrep

Ok, so on the Details thing… Teddy Geiger isn’t some obscure nobody…. he had a hit in 06 and was in a TV show and a movie….Wikipedia is my friend…

  • gingerly

I’m unconcerned who digs at who. I’m concerned if they make good music. I’m concerned most of all if (1) they are happy what they are doing, and (2) I enjoy it.

As far as having a hit and was in a TV show? I’m thinking quite a few obscure nobodies have done so I don’t think either of those things give you credibility…

  • snuffles

Oooh! Does Teddy Geiger have an album coming out soon? I loved his first one. He’s a major talent.

  • MrsTrep

The Details article is supposedly about “new male artists” attempting to climb the charts…. Teddy Geiger’s first song was up to 10 on the adult chart and in the top 30 on many others in 06. It was also on Now 22! And he had another on Now 23! Doesn’t scream ‘new artist’ to me, which was all I was apparently terribly attempting to say!!

And yes snuffles, Teddy Geiger has an album coming out, there’s a link on the site to listen to 33 songs and he’ll put the 11 highest ranked songs on the album…

  • gingerly

I have to agree with MrsTrep…because somebody puts out new music does not make them credible for what the masses of the nation want to hear. People work years to gain that. I seriously doubt that is Teddy Geiger’s focus. He’s more interested, it appears, in giving anybody what they want…The you pick my album doesn’t speak very highly of him to me. Sounds like he hasn’t a clue…

  • sma11ie

Details is actually a menà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s version of Vogue. So it is DCà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s target audience.

I know exactly what kind of magazine Details is, and in fact, you pretty much nailed it with your description. YMMV, of course, but the guys I know who would read Details (most of whom won’t even admit it), are the metro types who don’t exactly prefer rock music.

  • MrsTrep

gingerly, I am not talking anywhere about credibility. I am just saying I don’t think that Teddy Geiger should be in the Details ‘article’ in which he is on a list of new artists! He’s NOT NEW! That is all.

  • gingerly

Ok sorry. You think he’s not new. I think he proved he has no credibility. It’s all good.

  • jersey

Aw, I love Teddy Geiger. I always wondered what happened to him. He definitely reminds me of John Mayer. I also used to love the show he was on “Love Monkey”. Too bad it only lasted 1/2 a season, LOL.

  • kathrynTX

Yeah ITA OUCH on that Details blurb (not an article, IMO) on Cook. Oh well, it’s just an opinion. Everybody has one etc etc. Including ME! Mine matters most to me HAHAHA. Ya know, there are all different sounding kinds of music I think qualify as rock. I think that’s where Cook fits best. I’m just waitin’ for that record, the whole thing. Meantime, enjoying listening to Hold, Close Your Eyes, Just In Case and more from Axium, Analog Heart…and then Light On. Hmmmmmmmm…I imagine I can hear progression…. AND those photos. Well I’m totally biased cause I’m already truly deeply madly over him, and I love them all. I think he’s dorky, sexy, sweet, goofy, dirty, fun…all at the same time. He’s been photographed A LOT, especially in the past year. Whatever. Again, just different opinions!

It’s been so exciting, being able to write with different writers and learn so much from them. I remember a while back when I first had writing sessions with other people, and I was pretty nervous and frozen, but now I’ve been able to open up and just throw around ideas. Haha. I’m sure people of all ages love Crush. I think, however, that the demographic of those posting on Cook’s LO song that they hate him and think Archie was the real winner lead it to seem like a much younger demographic. I think Archie and Minnie doesn’t help with people perceiving he has a much older demographic. The name of his song and the subject matter don’t really really help that perception. Yeah, I’m 52 and I’m sure I’m not immune to a crush but it’s not something I’d sing about like I would when I was 12.

edit: Read my guidelines before you post again. Don’t lecture or tell posters what to post

  • sma11ie

archie1, I like both Davids as well, and agree that the comparisons get old, but I speak for myself at least that I wasn’t purposefully bringing up the comparisons. Both artists were mentioned in the Details article, and one got a more positive write-up than the other, so naturally folks started discussing things like the audience/readership for the magazine, which led to a discussion about the demographics of people who like music such as Crush/Light On. I’m not sure I agree with all the generalizations stated about Crush either, but they’re just opinions/guesses.

That said, my opinion is that I disagree that David C’s song “didn’t go too well” with his fan base. My verdict’s not out for that song’s prospects yet, and won’t be for another month or so. YMMV.

  • gingerly

I’ve been to Disneyland more times than you could imagine. I’ve been there at least 20 times that it was closed to the general public. I don’t think and won’t ever think that it’s something that protrays a maturity. Disney, but it’s very nature, is about fantasy and not at all real life. Just my opinion and as I said before, YMMV.

  • mac

Just want to give my opinion about the Disney thing. I am an adult also who absolutely loves Disney, Disneyland, Disney clothes etc. But I think Disney now has a different meaning when it comes to music artists. Because Disney now has Disney radio and represents various singers, to me, when I see Minnie standing next to David, or Miley having a birthday party at Disneyland, it means a younger audience. Music that is geared to the younger crowd. But afterall, that is what the Disney label is advertising, is it not?

I think David Aà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song just fit alot of the fan base this time and David Cà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s for some reason just didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go too well.

Once again, no more comparisons. That gets old.

But by saying what is in the first quote, a comparison was once again made.

WOW…I learn so much everyday at MJ’s. I have never heard of, read or even seen Details magazine.

Thanks to those of you that brought up the whole Disney/Archie comparison. I kept my trap shut yesterday when the pics of him with Miley and Minnie showed up. I took one look at them and thought…..Not my age group they are shooting for. And before anyone says…” but i’m 30,40 ,50, or 60 and just LOVE Archie” remember he already has you as a fan, but the average person on the street that is not a fan of AI or even has a clue as to who Archie is, may think he is strictly bubblegum pop music and not give him a listen.

  • jpfan

Disney reads kid to me and so does Nickelodeon. But Archie is a very young 17. Or maybe Jive is going the Jonas Bros/Miley route and Disney is the perfect fit. And yes there is a danger in being perceived as bubblegum. However, in the end it’s all about the music and if Archie can get some serious pop songs on the album (Tattoo/Apologize for example), the bubblegum stuff will be dispelled.

A snarky fashion mag like Details giving him the thumbs up is kind of surprising though. There may be more adult Archie fans than suspected.

  • soundscene

He was never photographed with Miley at the party, or any other Disney teen star, for that matter. Just Minnie and Mickey.

An artist can be marketed to more than one audience. Crush isn’t #16 on AC radio for nothing. If you check All Access, it’s been #1 or #2 on the Taking Off chart for AC the past few days. There’s an unconfirmed rumor that the song was used in an ad for the premiere of The Starter Wife (if that’s true, it’s decidedly not teen-oriented).

Yeah, David’s being marketed to teens. That makes sense–Jive would be stupid if they didn’t do that. But they’re not forgetting the rest of his audience. It’s entirely possible for an artist to be successful with more than one group of people.

I’ll also point out that Tyra Banks and Steve Carrell were photographed with Mickey and Minnie, too. I really don’t think their publicists are too worried about that, though.

Yeah, there aren’t any yet for Archie. Those ads are popping up at Pulse as well for DC when you go to his thread in the CHR/Pop forum.

I think RCA is spending more dollars on internet ads than Jive is right now.

I think the difference between Tyra Banks and Steve Carrell vs. David Archuleta is they are already quite established. David is in the period where he’s still establishing himself.

Crush isn’t bubblegum or tweeny, though.

He did record a song written and performed (but not officially released) by JC Chasez that is about the heart-wrenching pain after a break-up, so we know he’s singing more mature songs.

That doesn’t invalidate the success the song has had in adult radio, though.

Tyra and Steve weren’t really the point of my post anyway.

  • gingerly

I don’t believe I mentioned his song at all. I only mentioned he is still establishing himself.

  • soundscene

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe I mentioned his song at all. I only mentioned he is still establishing himself.

Yes, but what I was pointing out was that the whole Mickey/Minnie thing isn’t confining him. I only mentioned Tyra and Steve because they were there too–so obviously being at Miley’s party doesn’t really mean much in terms of the direction an artist’s career is being taken. And the majority of my post was about that, not Tyra Banks or Steve Carrell.

  • baxter

Well said gingerly. Wow…my fault. He wasn’t photographed with Miley but AT MILEY’S B-DAY PARTY AT DINSNEYLAND. Geesh…at a Disney stars party kissing Minnie. How could I have I made such a mistake. Perception is reality!! I see a kid hanging with a Disney crowd and it screams to me….RUN!!!! Not even gunna be something I would listen to or be interested in because I left behind the teen music crowd a long time ago.

  • Kirsten

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll also point out that Tyra Banks and Steve Carrell were photographed with Mickey and Minnie, too. I really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think their publicists are too worried about that, though.

LOL. Who knew Mickey and Minnie were two of the four horsemen of the apocalypse? I better make sure those pictures of me with Goofy never surface or I’ll never get to be the leader of the free world. Seriously, I think Mickey and Minnie are just good fun. It seems half the people who go to Disneyland stand in line to pose with some character or other. I don’t think that most people will give it a second thought. I think 99.999% of adults in the US never even saw those pictures, so Archie can put away that application for a job at McDonald’s away for a few more weeks.

When I saw those pictures I thought, man, Minnie is a little old for him. What is she, 75? I should have thought she was a Taylor fan.

And as for being associated with Disney, Disney is more than Miley. They get some pretty big pop names recording their songs for their movies. I think Randy Newman still has a lot of industry cred even though he’s written songs for like 8 of their movies. Rascal Flatts is on a Disney label, but they seem to be doing okay. And John Mayer, I think he’s had a hit or two since singing on the Cars soundtrack. Brad Paisley, Sheryl Crow. Elton John. All doing okay. Heck, even Mr. Cook himself is associated with Disney (official spokesperson) and it hasn’t stopped him from moving a lot of units. I think a lot of people think Disney is fun. Sesame Street. Disney. They all transcend childhood.

Now, if Cook and Archie start hanging out with the Backyardigans, maybe they’ll have some troubles. Although, if they can find out what the heck Uniqua is supposed to be, I would appreciate the intel.

Awwww bax c’mon. You know you’re going to the NKOTB reunion tour. Don’t try to pretend you aren’t! ;)

  • gingerly

I wasn’t responding to the majority of your post. I was only responding to Tyra and Steve being established and David not yet being so. I’m sure he will…no worries. I just think the majority of what I’ve seen (and no, I don’t go looking for stuff about him–it has to hit me in the face) has him linked to a younger fanbase…iCarly for example. I am absolutely sure you can point out a million ways that he isn’t targeting the young ones, but the fact that somebody mainly sees the young stuff and is an American Idol fan, to me, doesn’t bode well for the general public who has no interest whatsoever in American Idol. I just hope much more for him than a tween audience. I believe he deserves much more. The “adult” charts really don’t prove to me he has an adult fanbase. I’m not saying he doesn’t, because I know he does. I just happen to be of the opinion that they play popular music that isn’t rap or hard rock. That’s the way I see it at least. I really don’t think it defines an age group. The vast majority of songs, at least from what I’ve seen, chart on top-40, AC and HAC.

  • shell29

LOL. Who knew Mickey and Minnie were two of the four horsemen of the apocalypse?

:lol_tb: All’s fair in love and fan wars.

  • jpfan

“When I saw those pictures I thought, man, Minnie is a little old for him. What is she, 75? I should have thought she was a Taylor fan.” :lol_ee:

I think the headling “Archie the Adulterer” on the NY Post blog took some of the bubblegum away from the Minnie pics. They were pretty damn hilarious.

  • baxter

Dammit Sarah…dont’give away all my secrets…LOL

There is nothing wrong with Disney. Hell I have a pic of myself with Mickey…but the point I am trying to make is if perception is reality to the world outside of AI fandom….then for me to see a young kid pictured with Minnie with a headline that reads…” David Archuleta at Miley’s Sweet 16th at Disneyland” I’m thinking teen pop music…not my cuppa!!! and I am not the only one.

ANd Kirsten although I appreciate your comments, DC doing a short vid for Disney’s AI experience to me is completely different. Agree or not…..that’s just MHO…This is the exact reason I didn’t say a damn word yesterday in the Archie thread. Randy Newman, et al recording a soundtrack for Disney is a hell of a lot different than hanging at a sweet 16 bday party for the STAR of the Disney channel.

  • Trina

I don’t see how associating with Disney can hurt a 17 year old. Archie is a sweet clean cut kid. The High School Music cast are even older.

However let’s not forget what the other David will be to doing as Kristen mentioned. Now personally I think it’s adorable, but when this promo starts how will that impact his rocker image? I’m sure they’ll have him kissing Minnie in no time.

  • gingerly

I want the entire song of David Cook singing When You Wish Upon a Star. I never thought that song could be so amazing. I wonder why we are comparing Trina?

  • jpfan

I heard Chris Brown interviewed on the radio and they asked him to name a recent movie he’d seen. And he named one of those cartoon films that mostly kids go to see. Then he said “I’m not a rapper. I don’t have to pretend to be hard.” So I think Archie will do okay in the pop world even if he continues to hang with Minnie.

  • shell29

I just think the majority of what Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen (and no, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go looking for stuff about himà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’it has to hit me in the face) has him linked to a younger fanbaseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦iCarly for example. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see what’s so bad about appealing to a younger audience. Why wouldn’t that bode well for Archie or anyone else for that matter? The kid is still a teenager after all, and I would think most in the general public understand that he is going to appeal to a younger demographic. That doesn’t mean that young kids are the only people who’ll get his appeal. It also doesn’t define who he will be as a singer or recording artist for the rest of his life. Even if the music on his new album skews towards a younger audience, that doesn’t mean that his music or primary audience won’t grow or mature as he matures over the next few years.

  • elle

I think you’ve all pinpointed what is so unique about Archie with this discussion. I feel like we should all get it by now – David crosses all demographics and defies categorization. He hangs out with the teen celebs because he IS one. He has a mature voice and can sing mature songs beautifully so he appeals to more mature fans. You won’t see him guesting on “Desperate Housewives” even though his song may be featured on a promo for it. How cool is that? He can sing pop. He can sing R&B. He can channel Josh Grobin. He has yet to define what his signature style will be and I daresay it will change as he changes.

I don’t see the argument over credibility in appearing at Disneyland leading to defining who will or will not like him – it’s all publicity for him. That’s what he’s after right now and that’s most likely why he even went to the party – besides that he probably thought it would be cool for his little sis to be there with him.

  • cruzceleste

    @Shell
That is a great post. Like it or not, Archie is 17 so its made more sense to him to made music for people at his same age, a little younger or a little older,it has nothing wrong with that, his audience will grow and hopefully he will grow as an artist too, he likes the music that he is doing and he feels that right now thats represent his taste and point in his life that he is…

We have at all read at least 5 or 6 articles about Miley sweet 16, and in all of them David is mention, wich is great, he is getting what he wants… and he also got to ride one of the coolest roller coster with his family… I think that is a great deal….

  • ozarka

In several of his interviews, Archie has said that he does not want to limit himself to any particular kind of music for his first album. His album will be eclectic, a mixture of different types of songs. His dad Jeff has said that there will be some ballads in there. There might even be a Spanish song. So no one need worry that his album is going to be entirely made up of Crush-like songs.

His first single was Crush because David and Jive knew that he had to win over some of the younger audience, since he had established himself a little too much as a balladeer of mature songs during the AI show. I see the brief stint at Disneyland and iCarly as just an extension of the promotion they are going for toward that younger crowd. I’m sure when the album comes out, the promotion will change to match the contents of the album.

  • RV65

If Archie were 35 and hangs out with the Disney kids….then there is definitely something wrong!………..Archie IS SEVENTEEN……………whats wrong with being in a picture with mickey and minnie?………..heck I have one taken a few years back (and am definitely over my teen years) framed and displayed in my den……..one of my many memorable moments having fun…………….

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I think the best thing “Crush” did for Archie was to skew him toward a younger sound, and possibly, a younger audience.

A lot of his material on the show was mature – possibly too mature for him. Sometimes, I got the impression that he was the kid playing dress-up, in a sense.

The Disney thing is definitely not an issue. I love Disney, and I’m 34 years old. Well, I did love it before Miley/Hannah screwed it up.

Anyway, I think Archie is in the best place that he can possibly be.

Now, as RV65 said, if he’s 35 and still hanging with the Disney kids, then there might might be a problem.

    Archie signs with Azoff Management.

Azoff Management…the official management of Idol runner-ups. Katharine McPhee used to be with them. She might still be. Anyway, it’s a well-known management firm, so good for him. Being managed by your dad can lead to issues. You probably wouldn’t hire your dad to perform open heart surgery on you. Hiring professional help is usually a good idea. Just saying.

If I somehow gave the impression that I didn’t think Archie had grownup fans, then I apologize for that. Obviously, he has a huge adult following from Idol. The message I meant to convey was that I don’t think Crush is the vehicle that will earn him many NEW adult fans. But, if his subsequent songs are more mature, then I think he’ll be eventually be able to pull off that feat too.

  • IGetCranked

Well date night was … interesting. I feel like I didn’t even make it to second base though. :/

I didn’t know Katherine was with Azoff management. Should I be scared?

  • E

With the buz DA’s been getting, it’s gonna be interesting how it translates to album sales. I have a feeling it’s going to increase as the date release approaches. I know DC will sell loads as mostrock albums do. Pop are more for singles, so wonder how this will help.

I may be wrong, but I think Jive is trying to market DA as a kind of artist that people of all demographics will like? Is there such a thing? He’s on the news on Disney, male fashion mag, housewives show. Not difficult when you are almost 18, yes uncategorised, he’s in a unique place, that not quite and almost kind of thing in everything.

Azoff represents tons of very well-known clients. I’m pleased with his choice to go with them–it’s got a heck of a lot of resources. And frankly, 19M hasn’t done much for any runner-up. I think Archie is much better off going to an outside firm. As an aside, I don’t think Jeff Archuleta ever intended to manage by himself–they started interviewing managers months ago (not that I believe you were saying otherwise-just that there’s a lot of parents of young artists that do manage by themselves).

  • soundscene

I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know Katherine was with Azoff management. Should I be scared?

No, you shouldn’t. Azoff has been around a long time and has plenty of very successful clients. Kat’s problem was her album, period, not how much she was promoted.

That EW article says it’s a co-management deal with Jeff Archuleta and the dude from Azoff. Which could be very good or could be very bad. And could also be why 19 passed, if they did. (It could be either way after all — 19 passed on the David/Jeff twofer or the Archuletas passed on them.)

Damn, LO is dropping fast on itunes. With the front page ad now gone and radio ignoring it, I guess that is to be expected, though. It’s a shame; a few months ago, there were such high hopes for him but it doesn’t look so good right now.

That Details blurb – that’s just a whole lotta hate there, isn’t it? Where has all of this Cook hate come from? It kinda came out of nowhere.

I have no doubt the media will have a blast raking him over the coals. They always love it when Idol winners fall on their a$$.

  • Layla

RCA knows what they are doing.

The hardcore fans have done their job admirably. Now it is time to open up to the world beyond AI bubble naysayers….thank God. The negativiy really is funny after just a week.

The tiny world of internet AI loves them some fan compettion and to knock other idols…part of the beast I suppose.

LO has done exactly what I thought it would do…a burst of buying from DC fans, a drop, and then radio impact…and the coming of the album. The hardcore competition DC faced..TI, the peroxide blondes…well DC certainly held his own with the big guns for a week. DC will do just great. I do wish he was beyond the whole shitty AI competition thing, though. It’s so uh juvenile? for lack of a better word.

Rock song singles are not like pop flash-in-the-pan singles…rock is about the album (or record as DC lovingly calls it). It’s all about longevity and building a base.

Like Rollingstone said: Red Bull and throaty passion. Hell fucking yeah!

Looking forward to the start: GMA’s concert series…. along with the build up of radio play. Oh yeah…DC will do his thing …

RCA knows what they are doing. Cavallo knows what he is doing. DC knows what he is doing.

  • IGetCranked

I expected the song to drop pretty fast once it was off the front page – how else are people going to know about it? If RCA were really concerned, I’m sure they would have set up radio promo/interviews for DC to do this week. I can’t remember a previous winner who had the leadoff single on their album do as well as “Light On” did in sales the first week out. Cancel the album!

Radio is being slow to let go of TOML, but if they embraced that song, then they will certainly play LO. It’s getting a good reaction from the stations that are playing it. David is not quite Britney or Christina. Top 40 radio is not going to spin his song 24 times a day right out of the gate.

I hate to constantly bring this back to Crush, but it’s the only frame of reference for LO that we have so far. If I’m not mistaken, Crush dropped as low as the 30s during the interim period between its release and its impact date. So, I think LO’s trajectory is following the same path.

  • frogcooke

Noctem, yeah Crush dropped some after the big first week, it went to the low teens and hung around there and around 20 for about 85% of the time. the lowest it hit was about 24 and that was only for a few hours. Mostly at a time when there were songs flip flopping like crazy back and forth and other songs moving up. lol That was just before it went back up to 11 around the video leak time.

So yeah a LO drop on itunes is to be expected. LO will go back up hopefully with some more play on the radio and once the vid is out :)

  • IndyMuse

Somehow this brings to mind Mark Twain’s quote about reports of his death being greatly exaggerated. I think that with the adds date still a week away and little advertising for LO to date, it would be hard to imagine it NOT dropping quite a bit. The initial purchases of the really committed fans are done, and virtually no one else even knows it is out there. I expect it to drop further but then begin to rise as more stations add it after the add date. I know my local station doesn’t even have it in their possession, but they plan to play it as soon as they do. When the video comes out, that should spark a pretty good jump as well. It is simply too early to dismiss it, though I’m sure that will happen in some quarters. RCA is simply pursuing a different strategy, emphasizing the CD over singles, among other things.

  • cheese

Crush was also on the Pop 100 and Mainstream Top 40 airplay charts by the time it went to iTunes, and picked up radio play quickly from there. (I think Archie was added to XM before his add date and getting played on Z100 from the start had to help a lot).

Plus, the song just has the perfect slick Top 40 sound and was probably easier to stick in the playlist with Jordin, Leona, Rihanna, Jordin, Rihanna and Leona even before the add date. If Nickelback is now making weird, poppy Hannah Montana songs, something like “Light On” might not fit in that well. Maybe they should remix it with some hip hop beats or see if Lil Wayne is available.

  • cruzceleste

I hadn’t read this thread, so I just got caught up and will reply generally since I can’t begin to go back and remember who said what.

I agree that DA appeals to all ages, as well as male and female. The males are coming out of the woodwork. My whole family is crazy about DA. My 22 year old son and his wife, my 20 year old daughter (all three of those have a diverse taste in music), my 17 year old son (a month older than DA) and my husband, and I. They all love crush. My husband is a great pianist (a hobby aside from his job as a computer science prof) and he figured out how to play crush on the piano. It has a very catchy rhythm and hook and DA has a wonderful voice.

One thing to remember is that AI (from what I hear) has been losing younger fans for a while, not surprising since the themes tend to be on the older side. I suppose the theme issue also has a lot to do with licensing songs. DA has a huge older fanbase because he did sing so many older songs, and he has a very mature voice. Although his fans knew he could sing anything, Post AI, he had to reach out to the younger generations, so he IS being marketed to a younger audience as well as an 0lder audience. I think the exposure (having his face out there) is good, even if it is with Miley. Even though most of DA’s fanbase aren’t crazy about Miley, she is huge and everyone loves Disney.

I do think it was wise for DA to turn down an appearance on High school musical 3, because then he would be associated with the bubblegum pop kids.

One more thing- someone said something about Chris Brown saying he is not a rapper, so it is ok to like an animated movie. That hit the nail on the head. There is a certain, harder image a rapper or rocker must keep up, but DA, in pop, doesn’t have to do that.
