UPDATE: Listen to Howard Stern talk about American Idol on his Sirius radio show this morning. Stern goes on an endless, non-PC rant. I suggest the sensitive take a pass. (I can’t believe Idol is serious about this). Part 1:

Part 2:

Howard Stern confirmed to his radio listeners this morning that Fox is interested in hiring him to take Simon Cowell’s place at the judges panel.  What’s more, Stern claims to be interested in the gig. via Vote for the Worst.

via the Wrap:

Howard Stern told his satellite radio listeners on Monday that he is considering leaving Sirius – and radio altogether — to become a judge on “American Idol.”

Stern confirmed a report that Fox is interested in hiring the Sirius shock jock to replace Simon Cowell on the reality show.

“There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing karaoke contest,” Stern said.

“It might be possible, we’ll see,” he said, adding: “They’d have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough.”

Stern’s five-year, $500 million contract with Sirius expires at the end of the year.

“It would be the best thing that happened to me,” he said. “What a cush job — $100 million for four months. Who wouldn’t take that?”

Oh man, I can’t believe Idol producers would consider Stern for the job. Hiring the polarizing “shock jock” would be quite the risk for Idol to take. It would mean alienating their core audience of adult women–perhaps to attract a new audience of men and younger viewers? Very perplexing.

Still, I think this is a bunch of posturing on Stern’s part. He’s a radio broadcaster, through and through. He claims he’d give up radio  for the Idol gig, and I just can’t see that happening.

I also can’t picture the New York boy working in LA…

MTV has a more detailed transcript HERE. Stern claims it was Simon Cowell who suggested him for the job. Hm.

If by some wild chance Stern got the job, I believe he’d totally do a 180, and adjust to work within the family-friendly confines of the job (He’d have to).

Oh I “get” him alright. It doesn’t take too many brain cells to figure out his MO. I still can’t stand him though. Lol! He might be good for one episode and then he would become tedious and grating imo. Anyway, Idol ratings are still very high considering it is in it’s 9′th season. They need someone with musical/music industry credibility if they plan on surviving after Simon leaves. If they go with the right person the show will continue to thrive I think.

typical howard crap….adam “f-cked up” and tanked his career, but Howard could have straightened him out (riiiighhhht); he never would have put kris through (riiiighhht); he would have told carrie to lose weight (jerk); he would have old fantasia to get her sh-t together…ok then. I know that this is never happening, but i actually think it makes the show more of a joke to even discuss it.

Howard Stern is a series of huge FCC fines waiting to happen. How can anybody think that Rupert would seriously consider giving him a weekly platform on LIVE television? His old terrestrial radio show was fined repeatedly.

I can’t see Fox taking the risk on this jerk not matter what AI wants. He lives to shock and could give a crap about rules or networks. What are they going to do, move AI to Showtime or HBO? He needs to get over himself cause the rest of the country already has. This happens and that’s the end of AI. It’s a family show – how many people want their kids watching Stern.

  • CFIdolsfan

Well, that’s one way to tank their ratings quickly. I can’t give this any credence at all. I find the man so repulsive that I automatically change the station/channel if I hear even a couple words out of his mouth. The stigma he has created for himself is way too big for the idol audience to embrace him and I don’t see a whole new demographic suddenly tuning in to make up for the loss. So, yeah, pure publicity stunt.

I sure hope it is. I can’t believe Simon would indeed consider him. The show airs at 8 p.m., when a lot of kids are still up; so why would they want him on the show? I’m sure the contestants have learned to brace themselves for Simon; but I don’t know how it would feel to have someone critique me that cannot talk without getting bleeped.

Wow I must have zoned out while listening to the “endless rant” MJ posted, I didn’t hear anything about Adam or Kris. I’ll take your word for it that it was there, I’m not listening again!

    Can’t argue that!!! :)

First time I’ve ever listened to Howard Stern. The woman sidekick is pretty bad, too. Like an evil Ed Mcmahan. She’s fauning all over him. Can’t see idol going ahead with this.

  • Lulu2

Howard Stern? Ew. Way to lose your audience base. Neil Patrick Harris would be very good if he’d do it.

UHuuuuuh, PEEUKE first then Hide the grannies( their hearts would explode)!
Then go get the kids, and put them in front of the TV, just in case they haven’t yet increased their vocabulary ……it’s an education for bullies
in training, and for the kids too kool for school, thugs, and other miscreants!!

If he ends up on the show, my Idol days are done. I despise him enough to never watch the show again.

  • ohiobofan

Me and My wife agree on this one. If Howard Stern is the new judge we wouild never watch Idol again. I can’t believe that they would consider it.

  • MaryS-NJ

Ugh. I said a few weeks ago that American Idol is bigger than Simon Cowell and would go on if they picked a new judge to replace him. But I take it back. At least for me, American Idol is dead if the new judge is Howard Stern. He may be a nice, normal guy in real life (like Simon supposedly) but I can’t stand Howard’s schtick.
