UPDATE: Listen to Howard Stern talk about American Idol on his Sirius radio show this morning. Stern goes on an endless, non-PC rant. I suggest the sensitive take a pass. (I can’t believe Idol is serious about this). Part 1:

Part 2:

Howard Stern confirmed to his radio listeners this morning that Fox is interested in hiring him to take Simon Cowell’s place at the judges panel.  What’s more, Stern claims to be interested in the gig. via Vote for the Worst.

via the Wrap:

Howard Stern told his satellite radio listeners on Monday that he is considering leaving Sirius – and radio altogether — to become a judge on “American Idol.”

Stern confirmed a report that Fox is interested in hiring the Sirius shock jock to replace Simon Cowell on the reality show.

“There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing karaoke contest,” Stern said.

“It might be possible, we’ll see,” he said, adding: “They’d have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough.”

Stern’s five-year, $500 million contract with Sirius expires at the end of the year.

“It would be the best thing that happened to me,” he said. “What a cush job — $100 million for four months. Who wouldn’t take that?”

Oh man, I can’t believe Idol producers would consider Stern for the job. Hiring the polarizing “shock jock” would be quite the risk for Idol to take. It would mean alienating their core audience of adult women–perhaps to attract a new audience of men and younger viewers? Very perplexing.

Still, I think this is a bunch of posturing on Stern’s part. He’s a radio broadcaster, through and through. He claims he’d give up radio  for the Idol gig, and I just can’t see that happening.

I also can’t picture the New York boy working in LA…

MTV has a more detailed transcript HERE. Stern claims it was Simon Cowell who suggested him for the job. Hm.

If by some wild chance Stern got the job, I believe he’d totally do a 180, and adjust to work within the family-friendly confines of the job (He’d have to).

“Still, I think this is a bunch of posturing on Stern’s part. He’s a radio broadcaster, through and through.”

    i think so too… but still… DNW

  • Lauren722

Noooo!!! I don’t like Howard Stern….Losing Simon is bad enough. They need to find a good replacement.

  • jinxx315

If Stern becomes a judge, I will not watch Idol. Can’t stand him and what the hell does he know about music??

  • mmb

I love howard and he would certainly be entertaining but having him as a judge would turn the show into a joke bc its been years and years and years since he has had anything to do with the music bus. His show is talk radio and has been for like 15 plus years. He hasn’t played music on his show since the early 80s. He is not in the music business. So what would he add to the judging panel?

  • J9BT

“There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing karaoke contest,” Stern said.

With this statement, I believe he has already sealed his fate. There is no effing way IDOL would hire someone who thinks the show is an effing karaoke contest.

  • sunny2

I don’t think you’ll be able to call AI a family show if Stern is a judge. I’m pretty sure Stern is using the interest as a bargaining chip with Sirius.

  • http://AINow.org mkdavignon

I think Howard Stern would be perfect! He has great taste in music and often has fantastic musical performances on his show. He has also been responsible for getting a number of artists signed over the years. He is an avid watcher of Idol and his comments after performance and results nights are usually spot-on. He would be honest, but that doesn’t mean that he would berate every contestant. He would be no worse than Simon, and way more entertaining.

  • bean99

I love Idol but not if Stern’s a judge which I doubt would ever happen.

  • jerzytrash

Sounds like they’re going down the list of Media Assholes. LOL

I’ll bet they ask Larry David next…

Howard wouldn’t be a bad choice if it was on radio…but his shtick doesn’t play well on TV. I’ve always found him to be very forced and awkward when he’s been on Letterman.

I’ve heard Conan O’Brien’s looking for a new gig though…

  • CariA

You have got to be kidding me!! As many articles stated, AI and its audience were not ready for Adam Lambert last year. Do you really think they are ready for Howard Stern??? Definitely not.

Let me be clear that IMO, Adam was the best thing that ever happened to Idol and Howard would most likely be the worst.

  • jumpstart

Ugh. Thank goodness for TIVO. Rewind and Fast forward never seemed so appealing …

  • http://www.dancin.ca dancin

as much as i love American Idol.. if howard stern takes simon’s place I just won’t watch it anymore.

  • J9BT

He may be able to find an audience to tolerate him on radio, but he is seriously ugly and would be very painful to watch on TV, even with TIVO.

  • oceana

I would quit watching too (after watching every season) if this happened. I wouldn’t watch it with Conan either, though I like him okay. First, Howard Stern is a deal-breaker for me and would probably signal the end of Idol as we know it. Second, they need to replace Simon with someone who is in the music industry, period. Having Ellen is one thing, but to have two judges, especially one replacing Simon, who aren’t in the industry, would be insane.

It upsets me that the producers are even interested in Howard Stern. I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with Idol and this is one more reason to hate it. (The kids, the singers, are the reason to love it.)

“There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing karaoke contest,” Stern said.

This comment illustrates what a vulgar ass Stern is. The fact that they are interested in him makes the producers hit a new low.

  • tierbee

Ick, no. That’s it for me if Howard Stern is on there.

  • ross

Ick, no. That’s it for me if Howard Stern is on there

    Ditto. I hate him.

  • oceana

Stern claims it was Simon Cowell who suggested him for the job.

Maybe Simon’s into a scorched earth policy? Wants to destroy the show on his way out?

  • Pixie Baker

Ah, I don’t think this is *gonna* happen….but….if it does…..this will be the last year I watch! ( and that would make me sad!)

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

    Who dat? Lol

I just don’t want Simon or Paula to go :(

  • Rub

Idol will finally get the much sought after demographics – the 21 and up male!

  • TwigLA

Why is it no surprise that Simon Cowell MAY have suggested Stern? I’ll bet there are a lot of other similar bad fits that Simon has suggested. He wants AI to fail after he’s gone.

He’s a perfect replacement for Simon’s ego, though.

  • sammi

They have NOTHING to gain by hiring him. I absolutely will NOT watch idol if he is on the show. They would be sending a negative message by hiring him and I believe would lose a lot of viewers. I have already gotten to the point that I don’t even watch the show any more. I just watch the videos on this blog. But if they hire him I won’t even do that.

  • TopCatDC

I’m sure Ellen is thinking “Over my dead body!”

  • Kate8

I wouldn’t mind if Howard Stern was a judge for idol.

  • oceana

Oh my god yes, I don’t think Ellen would like that at all.

  • idolwatcher

Ha, ha – we won’t even know what he is saying with the amount of “bleeps” we’ll hear. I don’t see this happening but if it does I won’t be watching anymore. Can you imagine Ellen and Stern together — NOT!

  • Laurie

If that person becomes a judge, I am so done with Idol. It won’t happen, so I am not worried. He is just an idiot imo. Personally, I think Elton John would be fabulous. He knows music, he’s opinionated, surly, and British. I doubt he’s interested though. Did he ever guest mentor on the show?

  • ross

Can you imagine Ellen and Stern together

The press buzz and the ratings would probably be phenomenal. Unfortunately, the show would suck.

Actually we don’t even know if Ellen is going to any good, yet, never mind this jerk.

  • ggdoorsfan

i just can’t work up any angst or emotion other than extreme lmbo thinking about stern possibly being an idol judge… talk about your gonzo outta left field kinda possibilities that man would bring to the table… i am in stitches just thinking how crazy that would be if he were to do this… i’m not so invested in idol anymore that i care who they have on the judging panel… and for all intents and purposes, however crudely he may have worded it, idol is just a hi tech, hi stakes glossy karoake contest… albeit one that has given us some great talents… it’s not until after the contestants leave the show that we really get a sense of who they are as singers and artists, and what they’re capable of producing with original material… i would probably tune back in just to see the cray cray go down if stern is for real about this – though my head tells me it’s just another game the big boys like him play in the media and hollywood for added leverage in other areas… this development has me more interested than anything going on this season, lol

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I guess they figure they need a big name? I’d like to see someone who’s involved in the music biz.

    How about Kanye? ;-)

  • BootStar

Oh, please. This totally reeks of a publicity stunt. Never gonna happen.

  • ggdoorsfan

Oh, please. This totally reeks of a publicity stunt. Never gonna happen.

i know, really, lolol… i swear, this is the funniest thing i’ve read about related to idol in a while… it’s just cracks me up thinking about it…

  • ozarka

I thought $50 million a year for Simon was obscenely too much money for what he does. If TPTB has another $50 million lying around to throw at Stern for an even more obscene salary of $100 million, then they might as well have kept Paula for the paltry amount she was asking for. Yep, this can’t possibly be true. But if it is, it will be the death knell for American Idol for sure. Long live X-Factor.

  • tinawina

    This rumor makes me itch.

  • KayGee

I found his statement to be arrogant and rude…I don’t want to watch Howard Stern on anything, and if he is the judge that replaces Simon, I would have to mute the TV after each person sings…Just YUCK!!!

  • sma11ie

Um… I get where they’re going with this. I was rewatching S7 and realized that particularly in the earlier rounds, Simon’s brutal honesty and zingers made everything a LOT more interesting to watch. If we have Kara, Ellen, and Randy or whoever constantly giving nice critiques to bad performance to let the contestants down easy, it would get really really… dull. We need a meanie, or the panel would just be not great TV. Just my opinion. That said, I don’t really like Howard Stern as the particular choice… I’m sure they can find an industry insider who naturally has that Simon-esque cynicism and mean streak? C’mon, Hollywood is full of execs like that. If s/he’s good enough, we don’t need the name draw… I don’t think.

  • IdolThoughts

Wow. It’s hard to look forward to someone joining a show that you love when they’re looking at it as a cash cow and an “easy gig”. I find this type of transparency really distasteful. Not shocking though…

  • will

I think Howard himself planted the story with Page Six, and now he’s “confirming” it. It’s all a negotiating tactic with Sirius, which has fallen on hard times and will likely be looking to cut back his huge salary. Him throwing around the ridiculous figure of “$100 mill for four months” is a giveaway. I don’t believe a word of it is true. Nobody from AI has said anything that gives it credence, even anonymously or off the record, that I’m aware of.

  • jms

Well, that’s one way to tank their ratings quickly. I can’t give this any credence at all. I find the man so repulsive that I automatically change the station/channel if I hear even a couple words out of his mouth. The stigma he has created for himself is way too big for the idol audience to embrace him and I don’t see a whole new demographic suddenly tuning in to make up for the loss. So, yeah, pure publicity stunt.

  • May

Stern claims it was Simon Cowell who suggested him for the job. Hm.

Simon you evil genius. I will defnitely pack my virtual bags and follow you to X Factor if they hire Stern.

  • Kirsten

That said, I don’t really like Howard Stern as the particular choice… I’m sure they can find an industry insider who naturally has that Simon-esque cynicism and mean streak?

Howard Stern would be a disastorous choice. He would turn off the existing fan base and only draw in people who love to mock the show (and would never buy an Idol CD or attend a concert).

But you’re talk about cynicism and mean streak has me thinking about Sue from Glee. Paula had scripts written for her and Glee is already on the same channel, think what a great job Jane Lynch could do as “Sue – the mean judge”.

Some auditioner starts getting weepy – “You think this is hard? Try being water-boarded!”

Some male contestant wears too much product in his hair and she starts in on “little birds building nests in his hair”.

Some female contestant tries a little hairography only to be cut down.

Kara tries to drink from her coke cup and “Sue” slaps it away saying “that stuff is crap!”.

If “Sue” isn’t available, how about the Ohio State Professional Cynic who judged sectionals. “If I had to pick a singer I hated the least…”

  • J9BT

If “Sue” isn’t available, how about the Ohio State Professional Cynic who judged sectionals. “If I had to pick a singer I hated the least…”

LOL! Prefaced by “I have no idea what the hell I’m doing here!”

  • jack5791

Doesn’t seem like he is into it for the right reasons. Please Idol, you got us Ellen, which I am thankful for, make another good choice!

  • luval

I love Howard Stern but this will never happen.

  • larc

    I have just two questions:

1- What does he know about singing?

2- How will the AI makeup artists ever manage to make him look human?

  • sma11ie

But you’re talk about cynicism and mean streak has me thinking about Sue from Glee. Paula had scripts written for her and Glee is already on the same channel, think what a great job Jane Lynch could do as “Sue – the mean judge”.

Yeah, someone like Sue would be great. Too bad she’s fictional, haha. They just need to hire someone in the industry who speaks like that, is witty, and quick. That’s Kara’s problem. She is not without good critiques at times, but she is neither witty nor quick. Like it or not, people want quick-to-digest soundbites, not you rambling on about artistry or commercialism. You can say those things at times, but in much fewer words. Everyone just talked WAY too much in season 9.

  • glamertitis

Why is Howard Stern worth 100million a year? HUH? There is something really wrong when someone like that gets paid that much. Do radio stations really make that much money that they can pay someone like that so ridiculously high?
I don’t see why Idol would have to pay that kind of money just to find a snarky, mean judge. I am sure they can find someone in the 5-10 million dollar range who will do just fine.
And I do not think Simon is worth all that money he got either. He is very replaceable and for loads less money. Funny how he is so nice on X Factor, yet the snarky one on AI. He was paid to be the snarky one on AI. Big Deal.
I think AI are fools for paying that kind of money to any of the judges or the host.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

It is a TV show and a cheesy one at that, its not the Olympics, – why else would you want to be on Tv show but for exposure, power, fame and lots of money? Thats what all the up and coming Idols are shooting for, you think different? I tell you I have some swamp land in Florida that I can get a real good deal on for you

  • Caffiend

I love Howard Stern. Most people who hate him IMO simply do not “get” him. He’s raunchy and adolescent, yes, which sometimes makes him hard to listen to. He does not kiss up to anyone and hates anyone who thinks they’re too good to be made fun of. I think Idol’s ratings will go through the roof if he joins the show.

  • J9BT

He’s raunchy and adolescent, yes, which sometimes makes him hard to listen to.

That’s exactly why he will never be hired for IDOL, a show watched primarily by women and tween/teen children.

2- How will the AI makeup artists ever manage to make him look human?

LOL. They will never be able to make him look human! No one can see what he looks like on the radio!

  • Laurie

Oh I “get” him alright. It doesn’t take too many brain cells to figure out his MO. I still can’t stand him though. Lol! He might be good for one episode and then he would become tedious and grating imo. Anyway, Idol ratings are still very high considering it is in it’s 9′th season. They need someone with musical/music industry credibility if they plan on surviving after Simon leaves. If they go with the right person the show will continue to thrive I think.

  • mmb

typical howard crap….adam “f-cked up” and tanked his career, but Howard could have straightened him out (riiiighhhht); he never would have put kris through (riiiighhht); he would have told carrie to lose weight (jerk); he would have old fantasia to get her sh-t together…ok then. I know that this is never happening, but i actually think it makes the show more of a joke to even discuss it.

  • will

Howard Stern is a series of huge FCC fines waiting to happen. How can anybody think that Rupert would seriously consider giving him a weekly platform on LIVE television? His old terrestrial radio show was fined repeatedly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=227878099299 ai_fan

I can’t see Fox taking the risk on this jerk not matter what AI wants. He lives to shock and could give a crap about rules or networks. What are they going to do, move AI to Showtime or HBO? He needs to get over himself cause the rest of the country already has. This happens and that’s the end of AI. It’s a family show – how many people want their kids watching Stern.

  • CFIdolsfan

Well, that’s one way to tank their ratings quickly. I can’t give this any credence at all. I find the man so repulsive that I automatically change the station/channel if I hear even a couple words out of his mouth. I sure hope it is. I can’t believe Simon would indeed consider him. The show airs at 8 p.m., when a lot of kids are still up; so why would they want him on the show? I’m sure the contestants have learned to brace themselves for Simon; but I don’t know how it would feel to have someone critique me that cannot talk without getting bleeped.

  • will

Wow I must have zoned out while listening to the “endless rant” MJ posted, I didn’t hear anything about Adam or Kris. I’ll take your word for it that it was there, I’m not listening again!

    Can’t argue that!!! :)

First time I’ve ever listened to Howard Stern. The woman sidekick is pretty bad, too. Like an evil Ed Mcmahan. She’s fauning all over him. Can’t see idol going ahead with this.

  • Lulu2

Howard Stern? Ew. Way to lose your audience base. Neil Patrick Harris would be very good if he’d do it.

  • justjude

UHuuuuuh, PEEUKE first then Hide the grannies( their hearts would explode)!
Then go get the kids, and put them in front of the TV, just in case they haven’t yet increased their vocabulary ……it’s an education for bullies
in training, and for the kids too kool for school, thugs, and other miscreants!!

  • http://iluvmychis.com/blog iluvmychis

If he ends up on the show, my Idol days are done. I despise him enough to never watch the show again.

  • ohiobofan

Me and My wife agree on this one. If Howard Stern is the new judge we wouild never watch Idol again. I can’t believe that they would consider it.

  • MaryS-NJ

Ugh. I said a few weeks ago that American Idol is bigger than Simon Cowell and would go on if they picked a new judge to replace him. But I take it back. At least for me, American Idol is dead if the new judge is Howard Stern. He may be a nice, normal guy in real life (like Simon supposedly) but I can’t stand Howard’s schtick.
