69,000 for Laurens first week sales.  She was number one on itunes a good part of that week and high at walmart  meh at Amazon.  Different week differnent number of albumns being sold so it is hard to guess James but I am thinking based on the varies outlets placement he is in the 15,00-30,000 range.

Thanks for info. I was really hoping for better numbers.

I’d like to see original songs on Idol. Not every week, but maybe one week could be original song weeks. And then the final 2 should be allowed to have the choice of  performing either an original song of theirs or whatever dreck the producers come up with for the coronation song at the finale. The winner’s song then should be pushed to radio, a la Scotty’s ILYTB, rather than just left to wither and die and the first week or two after the show ends.

The producers wouldn’t let Kris or Blake Lewis rearrange their coronation songs, so I doubt that they would allow one person to perform an original if the other person in the final two doesn’t want to, or can’t come up with one on their own.

I’m not sure why some people seem so surprised with James’ numbers.  Everyone could see after the release of Stand Up that James doesn’t have the usual rabid fan base as some other Idols, meaning either it is smaller or it is not the typical Idol fan who will just buy anything their favorite puts out to show support (or even multiple copies).  On top of that, he seems to be in line with other 4th place finishers of the show (Daughtry was of course the exception).  He’s had very little promo, and released in a week with stiff competition in rock with Nickelback and Daughtry.  As with all Idols, if his songs catch on and start getting huge radio play his sales will increase.  No one can make it on their Idol fan base alone (although it’s a good start) – if people like James’ music it will catch on, if not then so be it.  The music  business is a tough business, and very few of the Idols make it to the really big time - Carrie, Kelly and Daughtry have because they have had some really huge hits.

I think that’s an excellent idea.  Michael Slezak has been pushing the concept of original songs for a few years now.  Idol moved away this year from the “Rearrangement” Idol focus onto “Definite Style But Young Enough to Push Around” Idol, but I think it could still be a great addition to the show.

This is the way I would work it:  I would pair all the Top Eight finalists with a songwriter who works in their chosen style.  (i.e., I would have Scotty and Lauren start working with country songwriters, James with a rock songwriter.)  So, that would be the perk you get for making it to number Eight.  (Giving them something to shoot for after making the tour.)  The ones who make it to either Five or Four would then get to debut their songs on the website (and itunes) that week.  Another goal to hit.  The final Two would get to sing their original song as part of the final voting show.  Maybe the show could even factor the sales from those two songs into the final vote tally.

During the weeks up to the final, we could see see some backstage clips of the Idols working on their songs.  (Maybe it could be on the Idol site if it’s too boring for TV.)  Anything that emphasizes the Idols as artists with their own vision is good — and it differentiates the show from X-Factor, where the singers tend to come off as pawns of their mentors.

It would really help the Top Two Idols come off the show with an artistic identity that would carry into their first cds.  Hopefully, that way there would less of a disconnect between what the person projects on the show and what they eventually produce.

By the way, this idea is already happening (in a slightly different fashion) on Majors and Minors.  The kids on that show (who are incredibly talented) are all writing an original song.  It’s fascinating to watch.  At the end of the series, all 12 kids will each perform their song, and the winner will get a recording contract.  But all of them are going to come out of the process with a song they can be proud of.

I think the reason some are surprised (and I’m not a James fan so this is from the outside to some extent) is that during the season and even during the tour, the impression was that James really was a forerunner or maybe even should have won (e.g., Scotty crying because he thought James should have stayed and Scotty go when James was eliminated)…   He also has many vocal fans here and so on…

My impression from reading all the blogs and what-nots after each tour stop (okay, so I’ve been addicted to this season’s idols) was that Scotty was the true winner (loudest spontaneous cheering, most signs, etc., etc.) but that  James certainly seemed to be the second favourite at virtually every stop (except maybe in Toronto where there might have been a bit more
Haley-love happening. But then, Canada seemed to love them all. :)

Oh I agree that there is a lot of James love out there – everyone I know personally loved him on the show, and that’s one of the points I’m trying to make – James has been released with very little promo, and his fans may not be the typical fans that follow these kinds of forums and may not even know he has a CD out there yet.  That’s why I’m not surprised with these numbers at all.  I happen to think his debut CD is really good, I bought it for myself.  And if he starts to get radio play or a lot of promo, I think his sales will really increase.  If not, at the very least I think he should be able to make some kind of living in the music industry like a lot of the Idols have - I think he is definitely popular enough to do that and has opened a lot of doors for himself through Idol.  He may never achieve super stardom, but he does have a lot of fans out there. We have to stay realistic here on how very few of the Idols become super stars. But none of these kids are a flop if they can make some kind of living doing what they love to do. It’s a tough business.

I’m foreseeing a potential problem with releasing LMB to HAC and Top40. Even if the people that listen to those formats like LMB, they aren’t necessarily the people who are going to like the rest of the songs on the album enough to purchase it.

If I was on the WindUp team, I would be pushing only the edgier singles to the Active Rock radio stations b/c those listeners have a better chance of purchasing his entire album (especially thru iTunes to get the 2 bonus tracks which IMO are the best tracks on the album). I just don’t see how getting spin for HAC and Top40 is going to do anything for him short term or long term except to possibly increase sales of LMB as a single and hoping it will make the charts (and I would be absolutely shocked if LMB cracked the lower end of any chart)

I totally agree with you.  I think that’s also evident in the fact that May is being bought right now by people who have obviously listened to the whole album and decided the rest of it is not for them.  People seem to be loving May, but in the long run, even if that became a hit, the people who love it would probably not like the style of the rest of the CD and may never buy it.  I know I personally will not buy a whole CD unless I like most of the songs on it (which I do on James’ CD but then again I prefer rock music, so you are probably right that he has a better shot at a rock audience).  I think they made a mistake by pushing him in two directions at one time – that works with bands with a more mainstream sound like Daughtry, but some of the tracks on James’ CD are really heavy – heavier than Daughtry or Nickelback.

I agree, Sabbia, that by targeting HAC/CHR they are looking for a short-term gain; and it is nothing that will help him in the long-term/ big picture.  The very fact that they had James on Z100, a station that isn’t going to touch his stuff, speaks to the fact that they are looking for quick money from Idol fans.

But this isn’t a new “problem” in the world of post-Idol music.  I think Cook faced a similiar problem this year.  And there are no easy answers when you are a rock artist coming off AI.

I have always said, WindUp should have forgotten about CHR and HAC (fact is, James isn’t going to go anywhere on CHR) and released his best rock song to rock stations.  They should have put all of their time and resources behind a real push to rock; and that would include actual promo with rock stations.  Get him touring with an established (and relevant) act and move on from there.

The only thing I would caution is building theories about fanbases based on on relative sales rankings in iTunes. I would wait until you have actual numbers to go with those rankings.

I had no idea the producers didn’t let Kris re-arrange his coronation song, who confessed that? No wonder that he sounded so awful on it, it was way too difficult for him.

I’ve thought this for awhile and that this should have been the next step in the evolution of AI, and would differentiate it from X factor.

BTW they did do something like this on both Rockstar seasons and it really did show who they were as artists.

I really thought he would do better than Lauren’s first week of 69,000
