Hits Daily Double posted their one day sales prediction for Carrie Underwood’s Play On, and it’s good news.

Carrie is expected to debut at #1. Congrats Carrie!   Glee: The Music Vol. 1 is expected to do pretty well, too.

She’s the one Idol that keeps on giving.

Hits to her record labels, that is. 19/Arista Nashville country crossover queen Carrie Underwood’s Play On, her third album and first since 2007′s Carnival Ride from the 2005 American Idol champ, is headed for a first-week bow at #1, with a total anywhere between 300-350k.

Columbia’s Glee, Vol. 1 will choreograph a pretty solid week of sales between 100-125k, where it will be neck and neck with Decca’s operatic icon Andrea Bocelli, not that he’ll know the difference, but we digress.

Check out Carrie tomorrow morning on Live With Regis and Kelly. Check your local listings for time and channel.

I am not surprised at all. I actually thought she would do higher. More like 400-450K But Great For her…I love the Album

  • CarrieRocks

Congrats Carrie! I bet she sells more then those projections though, because HDD always underestimates her for some reason. For Carnival Ride, they projected 400k at first, and she ended up selling 527k first week.

Since album sales are so bad in general right now, 350k is pretty great, actually. Her album is amazing, and I personally think it is the best one of her career.

    Go Carrie! :)

  • haruhi

Carrie really is amazing. Great job!

That’s the range I was expecting so I hope Carrie stays in there and if it’s more than that it’s gravy. I know she’s got the big i-Tunes thing but tbh her 1st week promo hasn’t been that big. Cowboy Casanova’s obviously a hit but other than that she’s had a USA Today main story, Billboard covery story, and Letterman, GMA, and Regis & Kelly, plus interviews on CMT and GAC. It’s good promo but there’s a lot of other acts that have done a lot more in terms of getting magazine covers and more 1st week TV and stuff like that. Plus her album has no bonus tracks anywhere which is actually annoying for me because I’d love to get more music from her.

That being said Carrie’s got a great TV schedule lined up the next month or so which makes me happy.

    Good numbers for Glee too!

  • CarrieRocks

PS- Carrie is on Regis and Kelly tomorrow, and VH1 Top 20 Countdown on Saturday. :)

On 11-10, Carrie will be performing an outdoor concert with Brad Paisely on Good Morning America from Nashville. Then the CMAS are on 11-11, which she cohosts.

Following week is Ellen, Jay Leno, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel, etc- and then she performs at the AMAS.

They are also doing a biography for her on the A&E channel this month.

Whew! That gets a sigh of relief from me. And a yay! As I posted on Pulse, here are the first-week sales of the latest studio albums of country’s big names, and when they were released:

    MARTINA MCBRIDE (March 2009) 41,457
    KEITH URBAN (April 2009) 171,525
    RASCAL FLATTS (April 2009) 351,025
    BRAD PAISLEY (July 2009) 129,527
    REBA MCENTIRE (August 2009) 95,817
    TOBY KEITH (Oct 2009) 90,217
    TIM MCGRAW (Oct 2009) 136,574

    300-350K is awesome!

Im thinking she will go 400-420k

  • lydia

Good for Carrie. I also think this is her best record so far. There is not a bad song on the album, and I see 6-7 potential singles.

  • skat-girl@allycatlover

100 – 125k for a soundtrack of only covers(not dissing it I love glee) is pretty damn impressive for a established artist let alone a unknown cast from a tv show.

  • sylvanaire

I’m listening to the album right now, and the songs are all great! This is the first whole cd I’ve bought from Carrie. I’ve cherry picked a few of her really big hits, but never a whole cd. I checked it out because DC asked his fans to buy her record so he could stay friends with her, lol, but I wouldn’t have bought it if I didn’t like what I heard from the snippets. I may go back and get Carnival Ride, too. I like a lot of the songs there too! Go Carrie!

Very True!!!!! The power of Tweens!!!

  • leilamaurizia

The individual tracks are doing well too. Carrie has 5 entries in iTunes’ top 100 songs in all genres:

    29 & 65 – Cowboy Casanova
    57 – Quitter
    72 – Play On
80 – Someday When I Stop Loving You

Plus, aside from Play On being #1 on all-genre albums, the 2 previous albums are also making a showing:

    78 – Carnival Ride
    105- Some Hearts

  • leilamaurizia

I may go back and get Carnival Ride, too. I like a lot of the songs there too!

It’s discounted this week on iTunes– only $7.99. Now’s the best time to get it :) Same with Some Hearts if you’re interested.

Is that high? I don’t really follow album sales. How much do #1 albums normally sell?

except for rap albums, this year I would say the norm to be between 120k to 240k.

  • Margaux

I am really liking “Unapologize” the track Carrie cowrote with Raine Maida and Chantal Krevaziak (sp?) — wonder if there was a David Cook connection there?

They should get working on that Cook-Carrie duet for Dave’s next CD.

  • amiroamor

I heard that they predicted the same number for Carnival Ride but the real projection was 500k +

  • leilamaurizia

I dug through the HDD archives and the initial prediction went like this:

    October 24, 2007

Next week, the industry goes on a Carnival Ride.
Arista’s American Idol and Grammy Best New Artist winner Carrie Underwood kicks the fourth quarter into moderate gear with a first-week total that is looking between 400-450k, more than enough to thrust her into the top spot on the next HITS Album chart.

    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news06857m01

The first week sales actually ended up being 527,101.

  • amiroamor

Thanks leilamaurizia! Play On numbers are still great though :)

  • monte

I’m also one of those that cherry picked from her first two albums but bought Play On. I didn’t start out a huge Carrie fan but sure have become one. She just seems to get better. I am now thinking about buying her other two albums as well.

I didn’t realize that some of the big country names had modest first week sales. I would have thought they sold more. GO CARRIE!!!!

  • leilamaurizia

    Definitely!

Is that high? I don’t really follow album sales. How much do #1 albums normally sell?

I’ll just post some tidbits to give a general idea.

    - Michael Jackson’s 373,000 first-week sales for This is It is the fifth-best sales week for an album in the U.S. this year.

    - Kellie Pickler’s second album has sold 328,805 units thru 11/1/09. If Play On sells 300-350K in its first week as predicted, it would do in 1 week what Kellie sold in 57 weeks.

  • leilamaurizia

What happened to the “edit” button? It doesn’t show up for me. Anyway, another tidbit…

    - Daughtry’s Leave This Town also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 269,299 units sold.

  • TwigLA

Great news for Carrie and very deserving. From what I’ve heard so far, this is her best album and it’s good to know that it has more of herself in it.

What she has going for her is the ability to cross over musical boundary lines and a lot of that can be credited to her exposure on Idol. Well, maybe with exception to rap. I think it would be hilarious seeing Carrie do rap or hip hop music.

  • dietcoke

Wow, congrats to Carrie! She is just awesome.

  • yeahyeahsure

Is that high? I don’t really follow album sales. How much do #1 albums normally sell?

I think it depends really on when the album was released and who are competitors for that week. You can get a #1 album and only sell about 100K if you released during the dead months of the 1st quarter and you can sell 300K and still end up being #2 if you release during the more competitive Fall period.

Does anyone know what the highest opening week for this year? Was it Eminem?

  • oceana

Carrie’s an unstoppable mega-star, wow. I normally find her songs too country for me, but several on this cd sound good so I’ll probably pick a few to buy.

  • jumpstart

The first week sales actually ended up being 527,101.

Amazing, I had no idea. Good for her, she’s an exceptional talent.

  • windmills

Does anyone know what the highest opening week for this year? Was it Eminem?

You’re right – it was Eminem. He got 608k according to Billboard.

  • maturin

With this opening and the holidays about to kick in, her total by New Year’s is gonna be O-Mazing.

Daughtry and Kelly will probably pick up a lot too in the gift giving season. The Idol big three had a great year.

  • SashaB

Is that high? I don’t really follow album sales. How much do #1 albums normally sell?

It depends. Some weeks, #1 debut can be much lower in terms of units sold.

Other BB #1 debut in 2009
    Rascal Flatts’ Unstoppable — 355,000
    Keith Urban’s Defying Gravity — 171,525
    Pearl Jam’s Backspacer — 189,000
    Daughtry’s Leave this town — 269,000

Not only will Carrie be #1, she’ll also trend higher in terms of more units sold at #1, too. Go Carrie

  • jack5791

This is awesome news. CD sales are not what they used to be, so to push these numbers is really impressive. She deserves it all!!!

  • Duke

The Glee CD is fucking awesome. Arguably the best CD of all time…

  • Tess

The Glee CD is fucking awesome. Arguably the best CD of all time’ ¦

I just have to laugh about this…I feel like I’m being sucked into late night TV where they are selling the “best of” CDs for the amazing price of [fill in the blank] and they compile all the love songs, or dance songs, etc. But at least these CDs usually have recordings from the actual artists.

The Glee album says a great deal about the “laziness” of many song buyers. The kids on the show have adequate voices and the songs are OK but, for the most part, they don’t hold a candle to the originals…but then kareoke is the name of the game (hence the popularity of Glee and AI and Rock Star, etc).

It’s nice that the show highlights some great songs…but I think I’d just as soon buy the originals. Even though I have bought AI songs from my favs….then it is much more about the Artist than the songs and it just tides me over until original music comes a callin’. And then the kareoke stuff just becomes a nice memory and gets quickly filed away.

  • RocktheFort

Well I don’t consider myself a “lazy” song buyer, but the Glee songs are fun versions of songs that I have liked for a long time, and its a fun show and they sing the songs well, not “better” than the originals. I plan on buying the CD for what it is, covers of cool songs from the past and present. I own some of the original versions of the songs, and just like to hear different versions, that’s all.

    Updated HDD predictions:

    * Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 320-340k
Michael Jackson’s This Is It (Epic) 160-170k
    * Glee, Vol. 1 (Columbia) 115-125k
