HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Nov 18-24 (UPDATED)

With 68.46% of reports in, Eminem is set to regain the top of the chart in his third week. He’s already topped a million in sales and will probably sell well during the holiday season. The top debut this week will have to settle for number 2. Metal band Five Finger Death Punch looks to sell 75-80K.

The soundtrack for the latest Hunger Games is currently sitting in third. HDD predicted on Friday that they would end further back, but the movie release may have pushed more buyers than expected into the stores. It certainly filled the seats.

Last week’s number one has, expected, taken an epic tumble. Lady Gaga’s “Artpop” is witnessing a massive 80% drop and is sitting at number 4. And they didn’t even fire-sale her album debut week this year. Gaga is going to have to re-tool if she wants to be the next Madonna, but maybe she’s content with her music and her fans so she can stay in her groove. Jimmie would be pulling out his hair if he had any left.

Now 48 (which will be an easy gift for the Christmas season) is 5th, the stupid Ducks are quacking their way to the best selling Christmas album of the season (seriously, buy Kelly’s. At least you will want to play her album next year after the Duck fad wears off) are 7th, Yo Gotti (rapper) is 8th and Katy Perry roars to 10th.

In the top 10, we have two Idols. Daughtry is debuting their “Baptized” in 6th. Sure, it’s a drop from the heady days when their style of rock dominated the charts, but they are at least outselling the debut compilation from Nickelback. Like Lady Gaga, you have to decide if the genre you are in is who you are or whether you evolve with the time. There is nothing wrong with doing the kind of music you love. Sometimes it is in style and sometimes it is less in style.

Kelly is also in the top 10 with her far superior Christmas album than that Duck garbage. She is holding in there at 9th. There is a Christmas tinge to the rest of the Idols/Talenters on the list too. The Best Man Holiday soundtrack features Idol winners Jordin Spark (Christmastime To Me) and Fantasia (What Christmas Means To Me) and a host of other people who can actually sing! The album is at 19th. Susan Boyle from BGT has her latest Christmas offering holding steady-ish at 21st.

Finally, we have Scotty McCreery with two albums in the top 50. His Christmas album from last year has returned and is sitting at 48th. His latest album remains in the top 50 at 40th.

One Direction released their album yesterday and HDD is predicted 500K in sales. Their one-day predictions should come out today. Danielle from the Voice also released an album this week.

ONE DAY SALES PREDICTION FOR ONE DIRECTION:

After one day of sales, we’re projecting the first week of One Direction’s SYCO/Columbia album Midnight Memories at 550-600k, which would their previous release, 2012’s Take Me Home, which opened with 540k.  (HDD)

  • Garrett Clayman

great adds for Kellie! Hope she gets the success she deserves and Dancing With The Stars gave her a push

  • bscfan

You’ll be happy that Kellie’s album just got a rave review in the New York Times this morning. Danielle Bradberry’s album got panned by the same reviewer.

  • Garrett Clayman

Success well deserved. Does anyone have the iTunes #s from yesterday to see exactly what push she got from DWTS

  • CanadianLady

I like Kellie, but unfortunately, I didn’t think her song was done very well at all last night. It was hard to hear her and when she went low, the words were totally lost for me. And the whole performance seemed kind of lackluster. Not sure why. Plus she went first on the show, which isn’t a great place. So I hope she sold some, but I have low expectations.

  • justmefornow

Interesting that James is back charting, maybe that AMA appearance did effect it a little.

But an even more interesting thing I just noticed on Itunes, Parachute has already surpassed both Stand-up and HTH in popularity.
And Parachute is no longer listed under Rock. It’s now under Pop and is currently at #170 there.
    Hmmm…..

  • Madilo

hahahaha Kirsten is so pissed that the Ducks are selling well.

  • Q_3

I cannot believe the Ducks album is selling :(

  • ThreeDirections

Wow! There are like six Kelly songs in there!

That all sounds good, I guess. Except for not being under rock. But if they’re going for pop…

  • elliegrll

The popularity bars show current activity. It does mean that the new song has sold more or is more popular than the first two, it just means that it is selling more volume at this moment in comparison to the other two, which just makes sense.

  • justmefornow

Well I’m assuming Wind-up changed it’s category and just recently too, because I saw it rise up the Rock chart on Friday.
I find it, IMO, an example of another piece of the puzzle how they are re-branding him this era.
But with it now being the second highest of his downloads after Will You Stlll Love Me Tomorrow, the only remaining Idol song on itunes that Interscope didn’t yank, their A&R so far seems to be on track.

  • justmefornow

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow is still by far, ahead of all the other songs, and I doubt people are currently downloading it now 2+yrs later.

Still the change of Parachute recently to Pop kind of surprised me.

  • thirdtime

…you have to decide if the genre you are in is who you are or whether you evolve with the time. There is nothing wrong with doing the kind of music you love. Sometimes it is in style and sometimes it is less in style.

This is so true Kirsten, well put. Good for Daughtry to be able to sustain his sales as well as he has so far. It will be interesting to see if he evolves his sound for the next album or not.

  • Madilo

All the songs above her are peaking, she’ll be #1 in no time

MEMORIES IS MADE OF THIS: After one day of sales, we’re projecting the first week of One Direction’s SYCO/Columbia album Midnight Memories at 550-600k, which would their previous release, 2012’s Take Me Home, which opened with 540k. We’ll give you additional new release projections as soon as we finish counting. (11/26a)

    Decent numbers.

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

There were 3 recurrents at Billboard: Chris Young’s Aw Naw and Tim McGraw’s Southern Girl out of the t10 and Brad Paisley’s I Can’t Change The World out of the t35. There were 2 Mediabase/Aircheck recurrents: Chris Young’s single out of the t10 and Miranda Lambert’s All Kinds Of Kinds out of the t20. There may be 1 recurrent at Billboard this week: Love & Theft’s If You Ever Get Lonely out of the t35. There will be 1 Mediabase/Aircheck recurrent: Tim McGraw’s Southern Girl out of the t15.

Cassadee’s Wasting All These Tears had a good week gaining 2.404 million AIs and moving up 2 spots to #12 Billboard. Cole Swindell closed to 195k behind by outgaining WATT by 1.141 million so odds are he’s going to pass this week. David Nail closed to 1.623 million AIs behind by outgaining WATT by 495k so he’s not an immediate threat to pass. Luke Bryan’s Drink A Beer is shooting up the charts and trails WATT by 5.727 million AIs after outgaining it 3.565 million. Luke will probably pass in 2 weeks. So look for WATT to finish the week down a spot to #13.

At Aircheck/Mediabase, WATT had a solid week gaining 934 points and moving up a spot to #13. Since Sunday, Cole Swindell’s Chillin’ It, which started the week 143 points behind after outgaining WATT by 588 points, has passed. David Nail’s Whatever She’s Got trails by 605 points after outgaining WATT by 164 points so he’s not likely to pass this week. Luke Bryan’s single was 3527 points to start out the week after outgaining WATT by 2423 points. He is probably not going to pass until next week. So look for WATT to finish the week holding at #13.

Scotty’s See You Tonight had a good week gaining 2.002 million AIs and moving up 2 spots to #21 Billboard with an assist from the 1st wave of t30 countdown spins. However, Danielle’s The Heart Of Dixie closed to 173k behind by outgaining SYT by 587k and Jason Aldean’s new single closed to 623k behind by outgaining SYT by 4.365 million AIs. SYT will pick up the 2nd wave of t30 countdown spins this weekend but I don’t see that being enough to hold off Jason Aldean, who’s going to pick up the 1st wave of t30 countdown spins himself this week. Meanwhile Thompson Square also closed to 604k behind by outgaining SYT by 414k. So we have a week where Jason will pass and Danielle and Thompson Square could repass. I’m going to guess that SYT will stay ahead of at least 1 of those but I don’t know. Look for SYT to finish the week anywhere between #22 and #24.

At Aircheck/Mediabase, SYT had a good week gaining 1279 points and moving up 4 spots to #23. It’s pretty close in that part of the chart: SYT only leads Thompson Square by 59 points after outgaining them by 35 points, Dustin Lynch’s song trails by 233 points (SYT passed it by outgaining it by 501 points), and Dierks Bentley trails by 340 points (SYT passed it by outgaining it by 561 points). The addition of Sunday’s countdown spins should help SYT stay ahead of those songs. However, Jason Aldean’s When She Says Baby trails by 1036 points after outgaining SYT by 2432 points. Odds are Jason’s single will pass this week. Look for SYT to finish the week at #23.

Danielle’s The Heart Of Dixie had a strong week gaining 2.589 million AIs last week and moving up 2 spots to #22 Billboard. This week could be a good week for Danielle since it’s her album release week but on the other hand, Thanksgiving weekend may mean an extra amount of preprogrammed playlists/special programming that slows most songs down. As already mentioned THOD closed to just 173k behind Scotty’s SYT by outgaining it by 587k, though SYT will gain the 2nd wave of t30 countdown spins this weekend. THOD slightly extended its lead on the Thompson Square single 431k by outgaining it by 173k AIs. Jason Aldean is going to pass this week, so look for THOD to finish the week by either holding at #22 or dropping a spot to #23.

At Aircheck/Mediabase, THOD had a good week gaining 1167 points and moving up 2 spots to #22. Scotty’s SYT did close to 456 behinds after outgaining THOD by 112 points. So THOD did better at Billboard, where it trails SYT, but SYT did better at Mediabase, where it trails THOD. SYT will likely close even more this week with last Sunday’s countdown spins counting on this week’s chart but I’m guessing THOD will stay ahead. Jason Aldean’s new single trails THOD by 1492 points after outgaining THOD by 2544 points. Odds are Jason’s single will pass this week, so look for THOD to hold at #22 this week.

Kellie’s Little Bit Gypsy lost 237k and its bullet this week at Billboard, dropping a spot to #52. Odds are the new singles from Billy Currington and Brad Paisley will pass this week, though there’s a possibility LBG will repass American Young’s Love Is War. So LBG could finish the week anywhere between #51 and #53.

At Aircheck/Mediabase, LBG gained 66 points and moved up a spot to #47. George Strait’s new single I Got A Car started out the week trailing by 103 points after outgaining LBG by 94 points, so IGAC could pass this week. I don’t think there are any other immediate threats to pass, and you can look for The Henningsens’s single I Miss You to drop below LBG now that it’s peaked. So, look for LBG to finish the week at #45 or #46.

Idol-related ads: Mercury Nashville has a full page ad for Scotty’s SYT in Aircheck mentioning its improved chart position on both charts, saying it has 10k average weekly downloads with 305k sold to date, and listing some positive Callout America data. Republic Nashville has a 1/2 page ad in Aircheck continuing to campaign for Cassadee at the CRS New Faces show.

Recommended reading: Country Aircheck starts with an interview of the new host of Cumulus’s flagship evening program: Nash Nights With Shawn Parr (who for 5 years hosted mornings at LA’s KKGO Go Country 105). It’s part of a trend towards syndicated programming within ownership groups. This goes along with the deal Clear Channel announced today with CMT (link”) for a multi-platform partnership that includes CMT’s Cody Alan taking over as host of the After Midnite program for Premiere Networks.

Both Aircheck and Billboard Country Update have featured rundowns of the 4 hour-plus George Jones tribute concert that took place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena last Friday.

Sorry, but I love the Robertsons. I also bought my copy of Duck the Halls.

  • standtotheright

Sure, some people like them. But between the camo socks and blankets and can coozies and bobbleheads (maybe camo bobbleheads) and every.other.piece.of.merch. that they are proffering, I find it strange that people are willingly choosing to buy *this* to support them.

  • Craigin

I guess its better to support them than someone else… At least they’re half decent people…. the money will be spent somewhere… its not like Americans to save afterall :P

  • nycguy

It looks like Alex & Sierra will win X-Factor barring some last minute surge by someone else. They are the only ones who seem to be able to chart on I-Tunes.

I will be happy if they sell more than 550K. Their previous album sold 540K and it had no big radio hits. That’s why I expected a decline in sales.

Right now things are looking good for “Story of My Life”.

  • jpfan2

Sales are pretty lousy considering we’re moving into peak gifting season. Hopefully Black Friday will raise all the boats this week.

YOUR NEW RELEASES: After one day of sales, Midnight Memories by One Direction looks set for an even bigger bow than that of their previous release, 2012’s Take Me Home, which opened with 540k. Here’s what we’re looking at for the week’s key debuts.

    One Direction (SYCO/Columbia) 550-600k
A Day to Remember (ADTR) 45-50k
    Danielle Bradbery (Big Machine) 35-40k

    29 22 BEST MAN HOLIDAY RCA 15,532 +52% SOUNDTRACK

Speaking of this, I hope that RCA sends Fantasia’s “What Christmas Means To Me” to radio. She doesn’t stand a great chance of getting AC and Hot AC stations to play it, but the song is too good to be ignored.

On the other hand, since her current single is still at the beginning of its run, RCA may be reluctant to release the the WCMTM, even if it’s two formats that wont’ be playing The Side Effects of You.

  • elliegrll

People may want to buy a song, but that doesn’t mean that they are going to vote, or vote enough to make a difference.

  • BluSky

win or no win, as long as Alex & Sierra record an album, i’ll be good :)

  • HMc

And moving up … its at #108 now …. interesting

  • thirdtime

#108 pop, and the last time I looked at the top 400 songs he was #327 – he has risen 200 spots since earlier today.

  • girlygirl

I see James’ single is being sold for 69 cents on iTunes, rather than 99 cents or $1.29. Perhaps that’s one reason it is starting to move up the iTunes chart?

When the originally released it the other day, was it going for 69 cents?

  • HMc

Yes, it has always been 69 cents

  • Madilo

Isn’t there a rule that you can’t discount unless it’s 3 months old or it’s just for albums ?

  • Madilo

No decline in sales for sure compared to last album imo but i think they’ll sell 600K.

  • Madilo

So Danielle is predicted to sell 35-40K

    what do you think ?

  • Sicola789

Seems pretty low, especially for Black Friday week. It’s not terrible, but nothing to brag about either

  • Valarie

Yep. Glad to see Wind-up using a little promo discount. Hopefully it bodes well for the era.

  • Anny_nanny

I wonder if Interscope manipulated sales of Eminem to get #1 for Gaga.

  • Valarie

No. You will see some artists albums available for $9.99 for weeks or months, rotating between the chain stores. Others only get that price for drop week.

Labels manipulate to get a number one opening all the time. It looks good in pr releases to say that artist X had a #1album.

  • Anny_nanny

It is one thing to organize big promo before release, to make discounts in the first week or bonuses for first time buyers. The other thing to ship less the albums of other artists or agree with retailers that they would hold the sales reports until next week.
I’m not saying that it is illegal, but it was very convenient for the label to have two of the biggest sellers of the week, to “improve” the results of the debut of the week.

  • justmefornow

It has always been 69 cents. I thought the AMA appearance could be playing into the rise, but now I think being featured in the Singles section on the itunes main page is the reason.

It’s moved up to #95 on Pop this morning :)

  • girlygirl

I don’t see a separate “featured singles” section on my iTunes home page. All the new music — albums and singles — are lumped together. There’s dozens of releases on that page. Where is the separate page for”featured singles” only?

  • ptebwwong

Actually, I was thinking about these numbers would be decent. She’s not getting a lot of mainstream promotion (Ex. talk shows). I actually think she has a pretty dedicated & big fanbase. IMO if she had a decent amount of promotion this week she would have probably done 55K-65K.
