HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Dec 9-15

With 47.18% of reports in, Queen Bey is set to rule the charts. Without any advance single, without any promo, without even a physical copy, Beyonce is predicted to sell 600K of her latest album. All hail Queen Bey! There is a Santa Claus. A lot of nattering nabobs are saying that Beyonce has revolutionized the album release, but I’m going to be the negative one here. Sure Beyonce can do this because the mere fact that one of the biggest acts of our times is dropping an album in an unusual way is news. The wave of news and excitement creates its own form of viral advertising and her album sales like hot cakes. Lesser beings than Bey could drop an album and not have an iota of her success because it isn’t going to be news. No news, no excitement, no viral advertising. Plus, this is going to only work a couple of times. By the fifth time somebody tries this, it is just going to generate yawns. So, good on Beyonce for creating an event and moving some units. The marketing teams are going to have to stay creative to keep getting this kind of result.

In other news, I would feel sorry for R. Kelly getting the number 1 album and release of the week yanked out from under him, but he named his album “Black Panties” and I just can’t with this guy. Dude! Seriously.

Childish Gambino surprised me because its not very often people I’ve never heard of end up in the top 10 a few weeks before Christmas. He also surprised me by being a hip-hop artist. I was thinking Indie Rock with an Italian twist. Apparently, he also acts. Of course, he goes by a different name there. He’s been on 30 Rock and Community and was even in the Muppet Movie. So, there! I know nothing and wiki/imdb knows all.

Kelly Clarkson (woot! – can I do that or should I continue to make disparaging remarks to trick the Gods of Music Sales?) is 4th with the top Christmas album. Right behind her is One Direction’s “Midnight Memories” in its third week.

The top 10 is rounded out by Eminem, the Frozen Soundtrack, Lorde (Queen Bee!), my besties the Ducky Dynasty Dudes (can’t hurt can it?) and Katy Perry.

Pentatonix continues to ride the viral wave with their Christmas album sitting at 16th. Susan Boyle holds steady around the top 20 as she has done since her album release in Octover. Danielle Bradbery is sitting pretty at 24th and Daughtry is 38th. The Sound of Music soundtrack featuring Carrie Underwood is 36th.
