With 37.17% reporting, Queen Adele continues to reign. Van Halen who is currently in 3rd is expected to challenge her for the top spot during their debut week. If Adele manages to hold the lead, this will be her 20th non-consecutive week at number 1 on the BB200. The last album to last the number of weeks at #1 was Whitney Houston’s “Bodyguard” album. I just can’t imagine the headlines.

The top debuting album right now is “NOW 41″. These ever-popular collections of Pop songs often feature Idols, but not this time. It does feature “Stereo Hearts” from Gym Class Heroes which does feature Voice judge Adam Levine. It also features the much discussed around here Hunter Hayes. Interestingly enough, it isn’t his current single “Storm Warning” or his next single “Wanted”, but an entirely different track. I suspect somebody is determined to make this kid happen somewhere.

4th belongs to the 2012 Grammy Nominess [sic] which features Kelly, Adam Levine, Christina and Blake (who continues to be the only Voice judge without a Grammy). Country singers Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan and Tim McGraw take spots 5th through 7th, the bopping Kidz are in 8th, Adele makes it 2 in the top 10 at 9th and those loveable goofballs LMFAO round out the top 10.

The first solo Idol to show up is Kelly Clarkson at 20th. She also appears on Jason Aldean’s 12th place album, NOW 40 at 23rd and that 2012 Grammy album at 8th. Scotty is at 25, Daughtry is 39th and Kellie is 41st. Maroon 5 featuring Voice judge Adam Levine is at 47th. Whitney is 15th.

Reporting from Billboard Country Update & Country Aircheck:

There were 3 recurrents this week at Billboard: Eric Church’s Drink In My Hand, Hunter Hayes’s Storm Warning (which got pulled despite gaining over 500k last week at Billboard), and Justin Moore’s Bait A Hook.

Scotty’s TTWG had a pretty good week gaining 1.181 million AIs on Billboard and moved back up to #19 from #22. It stayed ahead of Tim McGraw’s Better Than I Used To Be but just barely-BTIUTB gained 1.439 million AIs and now trails TTWG by only 112k AIs. But even if it passes TTWG, TTWG will pass Brad Paisley’s Camouflage (and Camouflage is going recurrent) so that’s a wash. I’m not sure if there’ll be any other recurrents in front of Scotty though Luke Bryan’s I Don’t Want This Night To End could go recurrent if it loses enough airplay (I can see it losing enough spins to fall out of the t10 and go recurrent, though not enough AI. But losing enough spins would be enough).

The next threats to pass are the singles from Zac Brown Band and Jason Aldean but they’re a few weeks away. There’s also Carrie’s upcoming single that’s coming out next week that could be a threat in a 2-3 weeks depending on how fast it gets moved into t20 rotation at country radio. At Mediabase Scotty’s already moved ahead of Brad and Hunter’s singles which are on their way down, Tim McGraw isn’t gaining points fast enough to pass next week, and Luke Bryan should go recurrent moving Scotty up to #17 by the end of the week despite Lee Brice moving ahead of him last week.

CaseyJ’s LDCIAN had a solid week gaining 495k at Billboard moving up 2 spots to #27. There was a lot of chart action in that area: LDCIAN got passed by the singles from Zac Brown Band and Jason Aldean, but moved up because of 3 recurrents and passing Billy Currington (whose single has peaked). LDCIAN outgained Gloriana and Andy Gibson’s songs behind it but lost ground to Chris Cagle’s single ahead (Chris Cagle’s single is now ahead by over 600k AIs). Josh Turner has picked up the pace some but he’s still a few weeks away from passing. Camouflage going recurrent will help LDCIAN move up a spot at Billboard this week. At Mediabase, CaseyJ’s been passed by Zac Brown Band and was passed by Jason Aldean this morning (which will be offset by Luke Bryan going recurrent). Justin Moore and Brad Paisley are also going recurrent so that should move LDCIAN up to #26 Mediabase by the end of the week. The next threat to pass is probably Carrie’s new single.

Lauren’s Georgia Peaches had a strong week gaining 661k to move up to a new peak of #33 at Billboard. All the songs ranked between #36 and #41 lats week had strong weeks. Josh Turner did pass but recurrents helped. GP gained slightly on Rodney Atkins’s He’s Mine (which gained 532k and leads by less than 100k). However, Eli Young Band gained on GP (gaining 748k AIs and trailing GP by less than 10k) so EYB will pass Lauren this week. Jana Kramer’s picked up the pace some and could be a threat to pass in the next couple weeks. Ronnie Dunn’s Let The Cowboy Rock and Eric Church’s Springsteen also now appear in the rearview mirror. At Mediabase GP passed Billy Currington’s single this morning and will have the benefit of the 3 recurrents that were already mentioned. But, Eli Young Band’s on pace to pass this week so that should move GP up to #32 Mediabase. T30 Mediabase is looking really good though it may take 2-3 more weeks.

Kelly’s Mr. Know It All debuted at #59 with 236k AIs. Billboard detected 10 spins as opposed to the almost 30 Mediabase detected on WUSN alone. Here’s what Billboard said about MKIA:

Concurrently, Kelly Clarkson makes a second solo appearance on Hot Country Songs as “Mr. Know It All” (19/RCA) opens at No. 59 based on unsolicited album play at two monitored stations (WUSN Chicago and WBCT Grand Rapids, Mich.). She first appeared when lead single “A Moment Like This” charted for one week (No. 58) in October 2002 after she became the first winner of “American Idol”. She subsequently peaked at No. 2 as Reba McEntire’s duet partner on “Because Of You” in September 2007, then spent three weeks at No. 1 with “Don’t You Wanna Stay” (a duet with Jason Aldean) in March 2011.

On the Indicator chart Kellie Pickler moved up 2 spots to #33 with 526 plays (+40) and 5k AIs.

Great to see “Stronger” both the song and the album hanging in there on iTunes with all of the other increases due to the Grammy’s.

This is great, but it still bothers me that he has that many views of the video and yet the single has almost fallen out of the top 1000 on iTunes again.  Why aren’t the single sales matching the video popularity?  Is that normal?  It seems like usually they go hand in hand, don’t they?

  • ronnie

It would be great if I will Alway Love You became a Hot 100 #1 hit again.  Casey James has really hung in there with that song.  With all those millions of views on his video, I figured Adam would be selling better, but #996 is terrible, I hope they go ahead with the 2nd single as soon as possible.  His album’s debut numbers will not be big with a flop single on his hands.

  • fuzzywuzzy

    Hi, Windmills!

    Couple questions:

do you think Hunter’s song got pulled because they are going to release his next single in the next few days?
I can’t see MKIA getting more than a handful of random spins on country music stations. Can you?

  • Avari

BTIKM is currently showing at #2 overall in music videos on Canadian itunes. I can’t see genres on my phone.

Which really doesn’t mean much in terms of sales volume, but it’s fun to see.

isn’t Chris Rene’s single supposed to get released to iTunes today? That’s what I’ve heard, anyway

    Hi yourself :)

I agree, Billboard pulled Hunter’s song because it had kind of been struggling, was almost 30 weeks old, and the previous week’s gain was like a last gasp before it totally plummeted. Billboard probably consulted with Hunter’s label Warner, got confirmation they’re moving on to a new single, and did a little chart cleaning despite Storm Warning technically not meeting the recurrency criteria.

With the way MKIA sounds I don’t imagine it’ll test that well, which is what would lead to a subcontracting promo arrangement with Sony Nashville or an indie for country radio. The wild card is that Kelly herself and her voice have a pretty wide appeal that extends to country fans. What it comes down to is how much Kelly’s personal appeal will offset the MKIA’s lack of country feel.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

They don’t always go hand in hand. There are a lot of factors that go into driving video views that don’t necessarily go with buying the song. For one, those views are likely coming from all around the world. Also, a lot may be repeat views or curiosity views. Some people may love the video’s concept/visuals but not the song.

That said, lots of video views is never bad! It all helps in some way I think.

RCA has already made noises about dropping another song and/or pushing back the album, so I think the label is committed to the success of the album even if this turns out to not be the right song to launch the project.

Windmills:)  I saw where TTWG jumped from 22 to #10 on Callout…does that mean that in the surveys people answer at radio stations?  Or is it requests?  And is this is as good as it seems?  Thanks:))

My, sometimes working, feminine intuition tells me that Adam Lambert is going to backdoor himself into the US market this time around.  I think he will do OK with his US debut of era II but it won’t be anything “out of this world” right away.  I think he will get more traction with his singles and his album “world-wide” especially as he plays more over-seas festivals which I think we are just now starting to hear about.  The joint release of his album, here and abroad is a marketing strategy that may pay off.  I really think that Adam will gain momentum as summer comes and the US will take note of his international fandom.  A girl can dream, can’t she.

I hope it works. This is where BTIKM vid is being watched.

    Thanks Windmills!

Casey actually gained less on Billboard then I thought he would. But so it goes, you cant always guess from Mediabase.
On Call out America LDCIAN has jumped to no. 14 with 14th favorite for core females and 15th favorite for core males, so I guess that shows it isn’t his idol fanbase voting for the song. But out of curiosity what exactly is core females and core males, age wise?

With the SuperBowl, Madonna’s songs (old/new), The Voice, Glee, SMASH, Grammys, Whitney’s songs, I’m surprised to see that BTIKM is still hanging on iTunes Top1000 this week. What a tough month to release a single!

  • LVD

Windmills:)  I saw where TTWG jumped from 22 to #10 on Callout…does that mean in the surveys people answer at radio stations?  Or is it requests?  And is this is as good as it seems?  Thanks:))

That is from one online survey, like Rate the Music. But of course it is always good to move up. :)

Just saw a DJ tweet that Adele is planning on taking 5 years off from touring and recording to work on her relationship. The source was Vogue.

Not sure how I feel about that. 5 years in a fickle industry seems like career suicide.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

LOL. I think we know that already. :)

I do need to get up on which in which countries Adam is the strongest. I remember asking that question last year in the middle of his album cycle but at that point I don’t think it had been released everywhere. Valentin was very helpful with that last time.

I think he had multiple big hits and the album went multiplatinum in Canada, right? Maybe Finland too? How about Australia? And then there were the countries where he did very well but not multiplatinum well, which I guess would be the US and I don’t know where else. And then there where a bunch of countries were  WWFM was a big hit, and I don’t know what all of them were but there were a lot. And then the UK, where nothing much happened but they do seem to be making a big effort to fix that this time. I probably screwed that up. LMAO. Do I have it at least partly right?

Lexie: Windmills:)  I saw where TTWG jumped from 22 to #10 on Callout…does that mean in the surveys people answer at radio stations?  Or is it requests?  And is this is as good as it seems?  Thanks:))

Callout America is a randomized national phone survey where people hear clips of 35 country songs and rate them, not an online thing. The results can be volatile, as evidenced by the fact that TTWG was down to #22 last week (it’s been solidly t20 for a few weeks). I don’t think it means much to look at one week’s results in isolation. You usually want to break down the numbers to see if they’re trending in the right direction as airplay grows, you want to look at stuff like the “passion” score (that’s how many people say they really like a song) and what percentage of people dislike/strongly dislike the song. A high neutral score either means people aren’t that familiar with the song or it doesn’t move them either way (which actually could be a bad thing). Breaking down demographic data to see if a song has major appeal to a certain age group and gender can also guide a station looking to attract people in a specific demo.

The Radio Feedback chart that BCU posts is the online poll. I noticed Kellie’s 100 Proof has been tested there, hoping that’s a sign of an eventual main chart push.

Callout’s an indication of what a random sampling of country radio fans like but it doesn’t give you the whole picture. Downloads are another part of that picture. Also, sometimes local callout differs from national callout and that affects how a station treats a song.

Hunter Hayes’s Storm Warning consistently did not test well (consistently between #30 and #35) but it nearly made t10. I’d guess radio saw something in the demo numbers that made them support the song. Like, maybe he had strong appeal to teenage girls or something like that.

girlygirltoo I had to correct a typo from my response to you: Storm Warning was actually 41 weeks old when they pulled it.

LVD: But out of curiosity what exactly is core females and core males, age wise?

People between the ages of 25 and 44.

  • Anonymous

don’t think BTIKM is doing any better in Canada than it is in the US. At least
in terms of radio, I don’t know what it’s selling there. So I really don’t why

Well, in addition to Canada and Australia/New Zealand Adam has done very well in Finland and Germany (and, I think, Sweden). WWFM was a hit through most of Europe, I think. I’m no expert on this stuff though, other fans may know more.

OMG. There are no words for Adele’s numbers. Both Billboard and HDD were predicting on Friday that Van Halen would take the week and she would have around 180K in sales. Unreal.

HDD is predicting she’ll get her 21st 1st week (for 21) this week and have her biggest selling week (previous 399K). This woman is unstoppable. Can she have the number one album 2 years in a row? 399K would put her at a million for this year already and it’s just February. Unreal.

Great numbers for Kelly & Scotty. Looks like Kelly had a boost from the Grammy’s. Scotty’s album sales stayed about the same despite the drop in chart ranking. Since many artists received boosts from the Grammy’s, Scotty’s numbers look great. He will still be the #6 country album.

Sad to see Kellie & Daughtry drop out of the top 50 albums.

  • Anonymous

    From HDD

“21 GOES FOR 21: After remaining at #1 on today’s HITS’ Album sales chart, XL/Columbia recording artist Adele’s 21 will have its best sales week yet next Tuesday (2/21), the one-year anniversary of the album’s release. Early indicators suggest the six-time Grammy winner, in her 52nd week on the chart, will blow past the 399k she achieved during Christmas week 2011. This will also be her 21st week at #1, setting a new record for the Soundscan era and tying MC Hammer’s Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em, which logged a pre-Soundscan tally of 21 weeks. Next up are the soundtracks for Purple Rain and Saturday Night Fever, each of which held the #1 spot for 24 weeks in 1984-85 and 1978, respectively.”

That house is only rented, but it still is probably expensive.  Has Adele toured in the U.S. at all?  I remember that she had to cancel her tour, but I don’t know if that was before she started or part way through?

  • Listening

Adele’s sales are insane, are you kidding me this woman is a beast. I just get giddy over the fact a woman who doesn’t flash her body or just sing club songs made it to the top. She sings with power and passion and her songs are moving what more could you ask for. I just feel happy for Adele because of her success it’s well deserved.

I love a good club song but i’d like to think we’re more than that and that there’s depth in a song/individual and the fact that most female singers strut around in barely anything just gets annoying. Those women who don’t perform like that deserve acknowledgement.

  • Anonymous

She has this incredible reputation now so her recordings should continue to sell indefinitely – as you say “24″ “25.”  I don’t see her doing extensive tours of any kind – doubt she has the stamina.  (A review I read of her live performance was not overly enthusiastic.)  And her performance at the Grammys, while lovely, was not 100% – her jumping from chest to head voice too abruptly was not good and she obviously was not singing full bore.  And, from my point of view, her stage presence is slightly boring – would do well in small venues – no arenas for her.  But, she’s a zillionaire so it’s all good.

  • Anonymous

Holy cow at Adele. That women is an alien. But her sales are well-deserved. She has an AMAZING voice and she can dang sing live.

Curious question, though? Will sales continue to increase next week or does only apply to Adele?

  • Anonymous

I think a powerful singer belting out moving songs makes a wonderful concert.  On the other heand,  a Katy Perry type of show takes a lot of creactivity and skill that is also super entertaining and fun for the audiance.  To me you really get something when a singer can combine both of these types of shows.  Looking at you Pink.

Adele blogged that the five-year retirement rumor wasn’t true. She said it’s more like a five day break, but she’s doing the Brit Awards and going back into the studio.

Curious question, though? Will sales continue to increase next week or does it only apply to Adele?

Sales will probably increase for most of the artists featured on the Grammys. Also, Valentine’s Day takes place during the week, and music is a popular gift, so that will raise album sales in general most likely.

I’m not represented there – one of the remaining millions who doesn’t own the album or the singles…and doesn’t plan to. Well, unless she sings I an “I dumped the fool” song. Maybe then. Heh. But that’s not her life experience, so I guess not, at least not in the forseeable future.

Still, happy to see her performance style and her vocals receive praise (and massive sales) and give an alternative to what has been the predominate ‘hands in the air, clothes barely there’ trend in Pop. The audience seems to be eager for some music that was a complete contrast, and didn’t employ auto-tune.

Also. Nice if there is finally a backlash against electronic voices. IMO.

Yeah, I don’t think Adele will be doing a big tour anytime soon. Small intimate venues are out of question for her now due to demand and her limited stamina.

Ryan Tedder confirmed there will be a 4th single (RHI). Obviously, the label will milk this album for all it’s worth.

I find Adele, her voice and her music overrated and her sales numbers are just puzzling. Especially considering how many artists with material  of better or comparable quality sell much less or almost nothing.

I don’t think Adele is all that different from popstars of today. She herself is not a popstar (she is adult contemporary), but her image is just as carefully  calculated as images of popstars. She will turn 24 in May. It’s hard to believe she is that young under that pile of make up and clothes suitable for women twice her age.

Hopefully she will fade away soon. But I’m sure in a few years another female singer with soulful voice will come along.

    Wow.

There are many great artists who are underrated and never sell anything.  It’s not new.  That just how it goes.

As far as Adele, of course she is different from current pop stars.  Her hair isn’t blue, she doesn’t hatch from eggs, or wear meat dresses.  She doesn’t sing almost exclusively about fucking, and she didn’t try to market her new baby.

As far as her makeup and clothing, been there, done that.  I don’t ever by something bases on how someone dresses, or the amount of makeup that they wear.

I don’t mind if she fades away for a while now, but talent like that will rise again.  She’s already proven her value.  I just don’t get this backlash.  Does Katy Perry have the same kind of backlash, or Gaga?  Talent is talent, and in an industry that is foundering and full of some pretty bad shit passing for music, I applaud Adele.

“I find Adele, her voice and her music overrated and her sales numbers are just puzzling.”

    Ah. I echo abbysee’s “WOW”.

As in… I think Adele has this amazingly unique voice, husky yet flexible and always, always on tune. Filled with emotion and guts. Her song’s lyrics are intense, unbelievable poems filled with a woman’s search for love. A true love. How universal is that?

When I first listened to “Turning Tables” I cried. Yes. Cried. It was something I’d just gone thru. I highly doubt I will ever CRY when Britney or Katy sing. Or Lady Gaga. Or Nicki Minaj… WTF?

“She will turn 24 in May. It’s hard to believe she is that young under that pile of make up and clothes suitable for women twice her age.”

Gosh. A singer who puts her voice and emotion and “take on life” front and center. An artist who doesn’t use her body and crazy ass antics to draw attention to songs that a year from now (much less a decade from now) will be forgotten as trash.
” Especially considering how many artists with material of better or comparable quality sell much less or almost nothing”

Really? I’d love to know who these undiscovered, brillliant artists are. Seriously. Because I will buy their music. Honest.

Just because WWFM was successful in those countries, that doesn’t mean that BTIKM will be.  I don’t think that the IIHY did as well in as many countries as WWFM did, and that could play a role in how well people embrace BTIKM.

  • Karen C

I find Adele, her voice and her music overrated and her sales numbers are just puzzling. Especially considering how many artists with material of better or comparable quality sell much less or almost nothing.

Being that she has had such high sales, it shows that there is a huge audience for her type of music.  I think it’s a possibility that the decrease in record sales we’ve seen the past few years has to do with people simply not liking the music, being that her music is different than what we’ve heard the past few years and is doing so well.

So is a woman her age supposed to walk around half dressed to be considered young looking, like a lot of the other pop stars?

I’m sorry, didn’t see that you had qualified your statement.  You just asked if they got that kind of backlash. Most of the backlash I have seen was pure overexposure of their music,  just like with Adele. I see it all the time with any artist whose music if overplayed.

  • Anonymous

Not to dissect what is being said here, but I don’t understand why anyone would want any of these artists to fade away.  Even if you don’t like them, most of them work hard and have some degree of talent.  They’re doing the best they can with the chance they’ve been given.  So kudos to them, I say.

Everyone has different tastes, but Adele has struck a chord with a lot of music lovers, myself included.  Why take a swipe at it? On the same token, songs by Gaga, Jessie J, Robyn, Lykke Li, Lana Del Rey and several others have also impacted me.

Adele wears tea dresses.  Gaga wears bird cages.  Nicki Minaj wears hot pink chicken wing necklaces.  Katy looks like a bubblegum wrapper. Rihanna doesn’t wear much at all! But I like them all.  It’s who they are, and it suits them. And they’re all so different. Why choose just one color of rose when they’re are so many?

It’s almost liking not opening oneself to a new sound.  Who wants to do that? I don’t get into the whole ‘can only appreciate one kind of singer.’  Heck, most of them have put out something I like.  And if I were hoping they would ‘fade away,’ I would have missed out on some great music.  And how sad would that be, to deny myself something I that enjoyed?

It’s why I get so fussy about those who discount R&B.  Are you even trying some of it out?  Imagine if everyone felt that way about a genre you liked.  Why be close-minded to something that can’t possibly hurt you?  And who knows?  You may like it!

If it’s just about hating what’s popular at the moment–I don’t get that mindset, but it’s a dominant one, so I can let it go.  But how nice would it be just to kick back and enjoy whatever comes on the radio at that moment?  No turning the dial!  Just absorb it and have a good time with it.  :-)

Two years ago, I was almost ready to give up on female pop music. There’s just too many awful music (Gaga, Beyonce, Kesha, Britney) being shoved down our throats that I gag everytime I hear them. And then Adele came along. She’s such a breath of fresh air in a sea of mindless and mindnumbing music. Such talent and artistry. Many serious artists look up to her. Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl said, “I said, take the Adele record, for example. It’s an amazing record and everybody’s so shocked that it’s such a phenomenon. I’m not. You know why that record’s huge? Because it’s fucking good and it’s real!”

Gaga and Katy Perry get a ton of backlash.  I see them routinely derided for their singing (Katy) or performance style (Gaga).  Like Adele, their success could also be used to varifiy their talent.

But I didn’t see that caveat either.  It was like her sales were offensive because she was selling.

By the way I llike Katy and Kesha.  They are pop fluff and fun, I can get down with that.  Katy’s latest is my favorite of hers, and Kesha has my favorite when I am down in the dumps always cheers me up, Tik ToK, love, love, love it.  Love Adele too, not mad at her for being successful.

lolwut? first of all how is releasing 4 singles from an album that sold 18M copies (as of yet) milking? that doesn’t make lot of sense

I think she is one of a kind songwriter, one of a kind singer, one of a kind performer

Just like Amy Winehouse. I find nothing puzzling about the success she is having

People underestimate the power of a ‘simple’ love song. The most beloved songs that transcend genres and generations are often quite simple love songs.

And she definitely is not a typical pop star, in fact when someone wrote on pulse about a year ago that Rolling in the deep will be a huge pop hit they were being mocked relentlessly for thinking that the fat english girl singing weird mix of soul/pop/blues/jazz/country could complete on pop radio with rihanna or katy perry.

How soon people forget about these things.
