HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Nov 5-11

With 54.02% of reports in, Taylor Swift is set to lead the chart for the third week. When you start with sales that high (that aren’t driven by 99 cent gimmick pricing), even large drops leave you with a lot of units being moved. She’s predicted to move 200-225K this week which would be impressive opening numbers for most artists. The ever popular NOW series is the top debut of the week which probably explains why they are already up to version 44. This one features songs by American Idol Kelly Clarkson, Canadian Idol Carly Rae Jepsen, Voice Judge Adam Levine and new American Idol judge Nicki Minaj. Now 43 is still on the chart at 28 and features Carly Rae Jepsen, One Direction, Cher Lloyd, XF US judge Demi Lovato and Voice judge Adam Levine. Even Disney is getting in on the NOW act with NOW Disney (22), but I think that features the original artists. The only song on this release that I think is related to this blog is the pop version of “Reflections” from Mulan which was sung by Voice Judge Christina.

Speaking of judges, there is former Idol Judge Steven Tyler and his band Aerosmith still turning out the hits at number 3 on the HDD building chart. Idol mentor, Rod Stewart is next and he leads the charge of Christmas album. IDK. I’m a Christmas song addict and even I’m a little surprised by the number of Christmas albums in the top 10 this early in November. Besides Rod, Voice Judge Blake Shelton (7), Lady Antebellum featuring Idol reject Hillary Scott (9) and Voice adviser Michael Buble (10) all have Christmas albums in the top 10. That only leaves room for Jason Aldean (5), Ne-Yo (5) and Little Big Town (8). There are two albums in the top 5 named “RED”/”R.E.D.” – kind of odd.

Speaking of Christmas albums, Scotty leads the charge of reality show contestants with his recent album currently at 12th. Not too shabby for a couple of days of work. Carrie Underwood is next with her “Blown Away” at 19, One Direction’s “Up All Night” is 25th and Jackie Evencho rounds out the contestants at 38 with “Songs from The Silver Screen”. Voice Judge Adam Levine’s Maroon 5’s “Overexposed” is at 27 and the Glee kid’s “Grease” special album is debuting at a relatively dismal 30.

    Go Scotty!! :)

Carrie’s Blown Away went recurrent at Billboard and Mediabase. Also going recurrent at Billboard were Toby Keith’s I Like Girls That Drink Beer (which went recurrent out of the t20) and also went recurrent at Mediabase, Randy Rogers Band’s One More Sad Song (which went recurrent out of the t40), and Katie Armiger’s Better In A Black Dress (which went recurrent out of the t45). This coming week Easton Corbin and Lee Brice will both go recurrent at Mediabase, and Easton will go recurrent at Billboard too.

CaseyJ’s Crying On A Suitcase officially made t20 Billboard in its 22nd week on the charts with a tiny gain of 57k AIs. This is CaseyJ’s 1st time hitting Billboard t20 (Let’s Don’t Call It A Night peaked at #21 Billboard though it made #20 at Mediabase/Aircheck). Congrats to CaseyJ and COAS on that. It was still a pretty flat week for COAS though and Thomas Rhett, Little Big Town, Jason Aldean, and The Band Perry are all likely to pass this week. Thomas Rhett is the only one CaseyJ has a chance of staying ahead of since Thomas Rhett is 507k behind and outgained CaseyJ by 738k (if CaseyJ picks it up at Billboard this week there’s a chance he’ll stay ahead). So, look for COAS to drop back to #23 or #22 at best this week at Billboard. Hunter Hayes and Kacey Musgraves are also closing and will likely pass in 2 weeks. With all these big songs lining up to pass and COAS not likely to be able to repass them Sony Nashville’s probably going to have to make a decision as to whether it wants to keep COAS alive and then see if it can grow after this wave of big songs.

COAS had a decent week at MB/Aircheck gaining 334 points as it reentered the t20 at #20. 4 out of the 5 songs behind COAS outgained it but it is still probably safe from being passed at MB for another week. In a couple weeks though COAS will likely be passed by LBT’s Tornado and Jason Aldean’s The Only Way I Know (which features Luke Bryan and Eric Church). You’ve also got The Band Perry and Hunter Hayes gaining fast, and Thomas Rhett may also pass in 3 weeks. That being said, COAS had a good sized spin gain this morning of +41 so maybe it’s going to start making a stand. Its AI gain was only 5k so it may have just been an overnight spin gain. COAS should end the week at #18 MB/Aircheck when recurrents are removed.

Lauren’s Eighteen Inches reached a new peak of #34 Billboard and kept its bullet despite losing 63k. Tim McGraw passed, George Strait closed to within 152k, and Chris Young closd to within 443k. Expect George and Chris to pass this week which should drop 18 Inches back to #35.

At MB 18 Inches gained 187 points which enabled it to pass Gloriana’s Can’t Shake You (they were separated by 121 points as of Sunday). However Tim McGraw and Thompson Square have both passed since Sunday, Gloriana isn’t far behind, and Chris Young was only 377 points behind as of last Sunday after outgaining 18 Inches by 243 points. Lauren picked up another 3 MB adds this week though all of these were stations already playing the song (2 of the adds were still manual adds). It’s still not exactly taking off and it’s suffering somewhat from the effects of the rolling chart. With Easton Corbin and Lee Brice going recurrent this week, Lauren should be able to regain the #33 position by the end of this week.

Kelly’s Don’t Rush shot up 8 spots to #46 which a nice gain of 652k. Like I predicted it lost a little ground to Jana Kramer’s Whiskey, though Whiskey’s only 78k AIs in front. DR should be able to jump into the Billboard t40 this coming week by passing 5 songs (The Lost Trailers, Craig Morgan, Brantley Gilbert, Kelleigh Bannen, and Parmalee) and moving up another spot because of Easton going recurrent. Billboard has DR picking up 11 adds this week.

DR picked up 21 new MB adds this week, a good haul that was good enough for #5 most added. MKIA picked up 22 adds when it went for adds in addition to a bunch of early adds but, this is a tougher time of year with more big name songs soaking up adds. DR charted this morning at MB at #50 with 341 spins (+214) and 2.124 million AI.

Kristy Lee Cook’s Airborne Ranger Infantry finally reentered the Billboard chart at #51 with a +295k AI gain. It stands a chance of making Billboard t50 this week by passing Craig Campbell (who’s 122k ahead but only gained 3k this week) and gaining from Easton going recurrent but only if Carrie’s Two Black Cadillacs doesn’t pass.

ARI is still not showing up under Aircheck activity so I have no way to figure out how close it is to charting at MB. Kristy Lee’s adds have tailed off in the last few weeks, with 0 new MB adds this week. That’s not necessarily a big deal as long as it doesn’t become a trend. There’s a bunch of new singles out right now that are probably soaking up a bunch of adds.

Carrie’s Two Black Cadillacs debuted at #55 Billboard with 796k AI gained. It’s 2 weeks away from its adds date but, it’s not too surprising it’s picking up early play after the radio edit was sent out last week. I don’t expect a huge surge this week since there’s no ad support and Billboard/Aircheck still don’t list its official adds date as 11/26 (it’s up at All Access though). There’s a solid chance 2BC moves into the Billboard t50 by passing Kristy Lee Cook, Craig Campbell, Jerrod Niemann, Colt Ford, and Clay Walker. Another week like this one would actually let 2BC pass Tyler Farr and the FARM too. If it did that it would land at #47 Billboard. 2 Black Cadillacs picked up 7 MB adds this week.

Idol related ads: Full page ad in Aircheck for Kelly’s Don’t Rush with testimonials from DJs and a mention that it’s t5 most added this week.

Recommended read: The lead story in Country Aircheck is an interview with CMA Executive Producer Robert Deaton. Among other things he reveals that Brad & Carrie never got to rehearse their opening monologue in its entirety because things were still changing and getting cut 20 minutes before the show started. One thing that got cut was parody based on Willie Nelson’s To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before that they called To All The Girls There’s Binders For. It was going to be a tribute to the women of country music. LOL! He also reveals that the cameras didn’t cut to Taylor Swift during the part of the opening monologue when Brad & Carrie were doing their Never Ever schtick because the camera director “couldn’t tell” whether Taylor thought it was funny, which IMO is his nice way of saying she was sitting there stone-faced and couldn’t take a joke. I’m totally judging Swifty for that. I mean cmon, if there was like ever a song that begged for parody it’s Never Ever Like Whatever.

There’s also a story where Cumulus announces its new label visiting procedure and their new “streamlined” music add policy. Cumulus is the group of stations that’s notorious for group adds that often come really late for acts that aren’t established in the country world, and that’s gotten a lot of stations kicked off the Billboard and MB panels lately for not playing the required percentage of current music. In their new procedure there will be a monthly “cattle call” where all the PDs and labels are expected to come to Cumulus’s head office for country in Atlanta, and the labels will make their presentations there. Weekly adds will also be finalized and reported from their Atlanta office by 1 person.

Congrats to Casey for making Top 20 on Billboard. Very cool!

I’m interested to see what HDD’s 1-day predictions show for the new 1D album. I’m expecting it to be a pretty big number, although nothing close to the 1+ million that Taylor Swift had her first week,

Congrats to CJ for his first Billboard top 20. The first of many, I hope!

Congrats to Philip topping AAA – awesome accomplishment for him, and IIRC, he’s the first Idol to make significant inroads on that chart. I’m guessing by now we can officially declare Trespassing dead on radio? Have seen nor heard a peep about that song anywhere on radio or the charts. It’s unfortunate, because 3 failed singles won’t be easily forgotten by TPTB on radio if/when he releases another CD.
Good to see Casey James still hanging in there – always liked that guy, respected his guitar skills especially, so watching his career evolve will be nice.
