HDD – Album Sales Prediction : May 7-13

With 54.02% of the market reporting in, Carrie Underwood seems destined to top the BB200 chart for a second week in a row. When was the last time an Idol did that? Have they ever done that? In any event, not many acts get to do that. Adele, of course, has, but we’ve established that she’s a very special case indeed. If anybody threatens Carrie’s domination of the chart this week, it is Adele who is lurking at number 2 and predicted to finish there.

NOW 42 features songs from Kelly Clarkson and 1D. It is currently third. Lionel Richie, who was recently a mentor on The Voice, is showing a lot of legs at 4th. B.O.B. is 5th with Luke Bryan is 6th. The two “Up All Night” albums are again right next to each other on the chart with 1D’s version at 7th and Kip Moore’s at 8th. Mary Mary is the top debut at 9th and the Avenger’s Soundtrack rounds out the top 10.

Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” is at 35 and she appears on Jason Aldean’s album “My Kinda Party” at 12th. Jennifer Hudson sings the title track of the “Think Like a Man” Soundtrack at 30th. Katharine McPhee is featured on the “Smash” Soundtrack residing at 48th. Voice judge Blake Shelton’s album is at 18.

As you can see from the chart, NCOE climbed fast for the first two weeks, and reaching 150 spins. This was good. In the last two weeks, it gained 49 spins. This is not so good.
We’ll have to see what happens after the adds date.

With 54.02% of the market reporting in, Carrie Underwood seems destined to top the BB200 chart for a second week in a row. When was the last time an Idol did that? Have they ever done that?

I’m not sure if it was for consecutive weeks but didn’t Daughtry’s debut album top the BB200 for more than 1 week in January 2007?

I’m hoping Carrie’s Blown Away can hold off Adele’s 21 this week for a 2nd week at #1. It’s not crucial or anything but it’d be a nice feather in the cap. I do think yesterday’s HDD update was very front loaded for Blown Away.

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

Carrie’s Good Girl had a good week at Billboard gaining 1.315 million AIs and moving up 2 spots to #5. Eric Church’s Springsteen outgained GG by a little over 300k and now trails by about 850k, and he got a BCU ad this week. Luke Bryan has also picked up the pace and trails by just under 3 million AIs after outgaining GG a little over 1.25 million AIs. GG would still have to pick up the pace to hit #1 but it will have a window after Jason Aldean, Kip Moore, and Zac Brown Band are done with their current singles. I don’t think GG will peak at lower than #3 country.

Kelly’s MKIA had a mediocre week gaining 213k and moving up 1 spot to #29. MKIA got repassed by Alan Jackson’s So You Don’t Have To Love Me Anymore. Easton Corbin had a good week gaining 881k AIs and trails by a little over 900k but probably won’t pass this week. Hunter Hayes also closed the gap by 200k but still trails by 1.1 million AIs. Blake Shelton’s new single is also probably going to pass in a couple weeks. There will probably be 1 recurrent ahead of MKIA this week (Rascal Flatts’s Banjo).

Scotty had a decent week gaining 191k and moving up 3 spots to #46. Little Big Town’s Pontoon outgained WTT by about 50k and trails by a little under 90k and Jon Pardi’s Missin You Crazy outgained WTT by about 90k and trails by about 110k so they’re both threats to pass this week. Kristen Kelly’s ahead by only about 150k but Ex Old Man outgained WTT by 50k this week. There’s also Kenny Chesney’s new single that’s likely to have a big debut and Lady A’s new one Wanted You More is very likely to pass.

Kellie’s 100 Proof kept its bullet but lost 24k AIs and dropped 3 spots to #53. Jake Owen and Lady A will both pass this week and so will Kenny Chesney. Lee Brice’s new single may also be an issue.

Bucky’s I Wanna Be That Feeling is showing up under New &  Active with 186k AIs (#60 this week had 460k AIs) and 6 new adds (9 stations total). I don’t think it’ll chart at Billboard next week but it may become a contender to chart in a couple weeks.

Idol-related ads: There’s a page 10 1/4 page ad for Bucky’s single in Country Aircheck mentioning the 8 stations it’s new at this week and quoting the Music Row mag review: “Hearty and engaging, this comeback single has plenty of melodic oomph and production excitement. With pile-driving punch a-plenty, it’s exceedingly radio-friendly. A real contender.”

There’s also an Aircheck ad for Gwen Sebastian’s new single from Flying Island Records (indie) with a testimonial from Blake Shelton. Speaking of Blake, there’s a full page ad in Aircheck for his new single Over that also congratulates “Team Blake” for winning The Voice.

There’s also a Bucky “Off The Record” interview on p10 of Aircheck. Bucky answers questions like whether there was ever a radio station gig that freaked him out, what happened the first time he heard himself on the radio, and what cover song he never wants to play again. His answers are hilarious. Sample question/answer:

Have you ever wanted to buy anything from SkyMall?
Are you kidding me? I can’t even look at one without ending up with useless junk all over my house. All the trees in my yard would have faces on them.

Recommended read: Aircheck’s lead article talks about how a bunch of country stations have started giving their highest rotation songs 60-70 spins per week (with some even trying a CHR-level 100 spins), up from the mid-40s which used to be the top level, why certain PDs are doing it, and how they determine which songs go and stay at that level of rotation. The article says that’s not just because of the influx of pop PDs into the country market, it’s also about ratings. The interviewed programmers don’t seem worried about “separation” (meaning, spacing out plays by songs by the same artist) and they say they favor “passion” (the number of people who’d pick out a particular song as a favorite) over “burn” (the number of people who are tired of a song). Check the new Aircheck out here.

Ew. Way to not give anything but a tiny handful of artists a chance. Of all the things to copy from CHR, they pick this one. And I thought I couldn’t hate radio any more than I already did….

I would love it, too but unless we wrestle all the Adele fans to the ground as they’re walking into the store I don’t think it’s going to happen. Not to mention the Carrie fans. We’ll have to see how they finish up this week but I am more interested in the numbers than the ranking.

    Adele is a phenomenon.

Woohooo!!! I knew TP could do it. I don’t know how long it will last but soooo good to see. The album is fantastic and pure pleasure. Hope the visibility on Itunes gets more people to check it out.

There are multiple signs that  Trespassing has got a lot of people excited.  Such an awesome album it is bound to do well!
What about Runnin’ being the single that made it into top 400?  People are awed by that super human range.

Music Week releveales some album sales numbers for X Factor UK season 7 TOP 3 finishers.

Rebecca Ferguson appeared on both Britain’s Got
Talent and Alan Carr’s shows to sing Teach Me How To Be Loved (BGT) and
Glitter & Gold (AC)  last week. It makes a 182-116 climb with 2,209
sales in the week, while parent album Heaven leaps 13-6 (9,901 sales).
Also helped by the fact iTunes are advertising it on TV and selling it
for £5.99, Heaven has climbed for six weeks in a row since reaching its
lowest chart ebb (60-54-43-41-30-13-6), and has now sold more than half a
million copies, with Saturday’s sales lifting its 23 week tally to
501,338. Ferguson, of course, came to fame in the seventh (2010) season
of The X Factor, and Heaven is making up ground on One Direction’s Up
All Night – the biggest selling set to emerge from an act on the
programme that year. Up All Night ebbs 20-29 with 5,459 sales in the
week, raising its overall tally to 608,382. Ferguson finished second,
One Direction third… and the winner of The X Factor 2010 was Matt
Cardle, whose debut album Letters has so far sold 268,865 copies – only
    302 of them last week.

Album sales are really low right now in the UK. Anyway, it’s good to see Rebecca’s album hanging on. Hearing that iTunes is advertising her album on TV is amazing. Her single “Nothing’s Real But Love” was featured in Nescafe TV commercial in February and that was also amazing for her sales. Hopefully her album eventually reached 600K and goes 2x platinum. One Direction are already there. It’s too bad they didn’t perform on BGT too. I guess they don’t have the time, they are recording their next album in Sweden for fall release, probably. They also have tour DVD coming out soon.

Adam’s Runnin being #350 sure is a great happenstance. The song has no promo at all, it hasn’t been played or performed even once, and still, there it is. (It was separately mentioned as the best song on the album in one review.)

I’s thinking that either people purchasing the regular album are now checking out the bonus tracks (Runnin is definitely the best of them), or the “Wow, listen to this, it’s almost a three octave range in one song!” -reaction has spread from fans to wider audience.

  • mmb

Wow wasn’t expecting Trespassing to hit itunes No. 1 today!  Thats great and must be really exciting for Adam to see.  Hoping for a nice Idol bump on Thursday

  • Anonymous

Not surprised to see Runnin’ on the iTunes chart. It is very common to see several non-singles show up on iTunes when an album is first released. And since Runnin’ seemed to be one of the songs named by a ton of people on blogs and on twitter as a favorite when the album was streaming, it makes sense to me that that is the one that is highest on the chart. I think it’s one of the best songs on the album, so am happy to see other people liking it.

I bought my copy-OK, two copies-of Trespassing from Adam’s website. My fanpack/with the vinyl arrived yesterday. I’m buying those bonus songs on ITunes. I’m sure I’m not the only fan doing this. usedtobelucy: Ew. Way to not give anything but a tiny handful of artists a chance. Of all the things to copy from CHR, they pick this one. And I thought I couldn’t hate radio any more than I already did….

I agree, though the article didn’t really answer whether the spins were being taken away from recurrent songs or from current songs by lesser acts. It definitely explains the bigger AI gap between some of the top 2 or top 3 songs and the songs behind them.

We got an extended Mediabase Country chart look for this morning’s update too. Here are Kellie and Bucky:

    51 54 KELLIE PICKLER 100 Proof 207 198 9 1.029

EmyR: Something like 40% of first week album sales are digital, aren’t they?

I haven’t seen that statistic. At best that would be an average and it would be very different for different acts. 40% of Carrie’s Blown Away 1st week sales were digital which was a huge figure for a country act. It was probably bumped up by the fact that Itunes was streaming her album the whole week leading up to the release with a main page and/or music page ad (then again, the album wasn’t on sale at Itunes so maybe the percentage could’ve been even higher).

Here’s the Nielsen Soundscan PR with lots of music sales data. In 2011 it looks like digital album sales were 31% of the total album sales.

Lots of great data in that PR by the way including a rundown of total sales volume by genre. Spoiler alert: your best-selling genres in order are: rock (by a mile), alternative, R&B, country, metal, rap, and Christian/gospel. There’s no pop category though. They also cover current sales versus catalog sales, digital album sales by genre, digital track sales by genre, and so on. One really annoying thing is the digital categories have a pop genre but the physical categories don’t and we’re left guessing where it goes. My guess is pop albums are counted under “rock” for physical sales.

Luckily Glee hasn’t been performing as well as it use to. But I guess you can always hope it does well, right?

Maybe you meant to direct this to someone else, since I never said anything about how well Glee would or wouldn’t do.  I’m not making any wild predictions based on Itunes rankings, or anecdotal stories concerning stores in my area.

  • Anonymous

Actually, someone on twitter was linking to research about it and that’s where I got the number. I’ll try to find it again and post it here.

Carrie had about 105k of her first week sales come from digital, correct? That lines up pretty well with the 40% stat, esp for a genre that is known to do much better in brick and mortar stores.

ETA: And windmillis already covered that. Resume must not be working properly.

  • Anonymous

Personally, I’m skeptical of anecdotal accounts of such thing simply b/c we hear about them every time an album is released, but it’s great if true. Hopefully it’ll be proven true when we get estimates. Still keeping my expectations in check due to lack of radio presence until then.

  • Anonymous

I wasn’t talking about total sales, but rather first week only. Like I said to elliegrll, the research I saw on it was from someone on twitter, which I’ll try to find again. It doesn’t sound unreasonable, but I also didn’t look extremely close at the figures used to come to that conclusion. I’m fascinated with the intricacies that go into sales breakdowns.

Thank you for the link to Nielsen.

  • windmills

Here’s the HDD item on the 1st week digital album sales by Carrie, Norah, and B.O.B. (all new albums that came out 5/1). EDIT: Oops, that’s digital sales for Carrie and B.O.B. but online sales for Norah – I guess that means physical CDs bought online:

CARRIE ON DIGITALLY: Country observers have to be marveling about the 40% digital marketshare for Carrie Underwood’s chart-topping Blown Away
this week, with fully 107k of the total of 267k bought as downloads,
remarkable for a genre that usually generates more physical sales. By
contrast, more than 68% of the #2 album, B.o.B’s Strange Clouds, were digital, while 43% of Norah Jones’ purchases were of the online variety. With NARM in session this week in L.A., the worm seems to be turning even more toward digital. (5/9p)

Like I said though, IMO that was higher because Itunes had the featured free stream of Blown Away available for a week before the album came out.

Speaking of which, Carrie’s Blown Away was again the best selling album at Itunes last week according to the Associated Press:

    Top Albums:
    1. “Blown Away,” Carrie Underwood
    2. “Neck of the Woods,” Silversun Pickups
    3. “21,” Adele
    4. “Strange Clouds,” B.o.B
    5. “Up All Night,” One Direction
    6. “Hello,” Karmin
    7. “Strangeland,” Keane
    8. “Making Mirrors,” Gotye
    9. “Blunderbuss,” Jack White
    10. “Little Broken Hearts,” Norah Jones

I think Cowell sees Rebecca F as a more urban sounding Adele / modern day Sade, and is marketing her in that vain (to an older audience).
She gets a reasonable amount of what (in the US) would be AC radio airplay here in the UK, but the singles haven’t really been a success, though it obvious supports the albums sales – along with the other promo you mention.

  • Anonymous

Interesting. The only thing I remember about the report I read was that it was averaging the top 10 albums from January to April (excluding the last week, I believe), but there was definitely no breakdown for genre. There were likely more digital sale oriented genre representatives and perhaps that why the number skews to 40%? It’d be interesting to see a deep analysis of that breakdown as well as between the two top digital retailers iTunes and Amazon. I know iTunes is still on top, but Amazon this last quarter saw a much higher growth, so who knows what the future holds.

Yay Carrie! Despite the fact that I do love Adele, I’m so sick of seeing her at the top of the chart. What gives?  I would think everyone would own the album by now. Are people starting to buy copies for their unborn children?

And yay Adam for scoring a great Top 40 add – Chicago – WKSC.

Yes he does. His current single Wont Make A Fool Out of You, that is currently charting on the Urban charts is on the soundtrack. I did not know that he had a song on a soundtrack before you pointed it out. I looked up the soundtrack on itunes and saw his song on it.

I am actually surprised that song has a such a slow climb. It is actually a good song. I like it and this is coming from someone who wasn’t a really big fan of his on the XFactor.

I am actually surprised that song has a such a slow climb. It is actually a good song. I like it and this is coming from someone who wasn’t a really big fan of his on the XFactor. I really could hear Usher singing this and making it a hit. The song is just moving slow because marcus doesnt have a big name.

It’s also more of an Urban AC song.  It would still be moving slowly, if LA Reid pushed it to that format, but it would be a better fit, and give him more of a radio presence ahead of the release of his album.
