With 69.42% of reports in, Justin Timberlake is sailing to an easy and impressive victory on the charts. His first album in several years is currently predicted to sell 760K with reports still to come in. Clearly, I’m a minority in thinking “Suit and Tie” was completely underwhelming (and I still think that it would have had a hard time becoming a hit if it was sung by anybody of lesser stature than Timberlake).

Kacey Musgraves is also debuting this week, but she is currently way back in send with 20 times fewer sales. That’s actually pretty impressive considering this is her first album since an independently released album in 2007. That was also the year she appeared on the country singing competition show, “Nashville Star” finishing 7th. While the show didn’t produce much in the way of immediate stars, Miranda Lambert and Chris Young would later go on to become successes after a lot of hard work and dues paying. Will Kacey join their ranks?

Bruno Mars is 3rd, Luke Bryan is working the Spring Break angle again for 4th, P!NK is 5th, last week’s number one Bon Jovi is 6th, Imagine Dragons are 7th, NOW 45 (featuring Phil, Kelly and One Direction) is 8th, Les Miz pops back onto the chart in 9th (renewed interest because the DVD is out?) and Mumford and Sons rounds out the top 10.

Phil Phillips is still riding high from his Idol performance and his “World from the Side of the Moon” is in 16th. One Direction is 29th, Kelly Clarkson’s Greatest Hits are 32nd and Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” is 35th. The Grammy Nominees CD is 30th and Now 44 is 43rd (both feature Kelly Clarkson and Carly Rae Jepsen)

Any special reason for the meh update for GGG on HAC? I’m hoping it’s a temporary glich and the song continues to move forward like a shark.
Basically that’s how songs function on radio. You either keep moving up or you die. ;0

  • http://twitter.com/joelhss joelhss1

Good for David A. Pretty good for someone that has been out of the country and not performing for a year. Always good to see him on itunes. Received my download last night with digital liner notes. He is an amazing young man. Not just talking; he is doing.

WGWG strikes again. Interesting to contrast this with the massive lead in the here for Judith Hill here. It might suggest that those who frequent here are not your typical viewers.

I like you, MJ, was not impressed with Suit & Tie, esp. hearing JT use cuss words and JayZ on the CD, that was a turnoff to me. The video is watchable and well done, but his CD is getting mixed reviews if you read across the web.

  • hcpoirot

Justin album after several years, in March 2013 (not a good month to release new album) just blow any competition AWAY. Just show you that Justin still had Major Star Power.

The number 2 album probably only sold less than 5% of his album sales this week.

  • tripp_ncwy

The latest HDD estimates had Justin’s album selling upwards of of 950-980k

Well, I feel like I’m the only that liked Suit & Tie, but that brand of R&B is the type people don’t care for these days unfortunately. Everyone, including myself, loves Mirrors, because it has the typical pop stylings that’s accessible to mainstream audiences.

And your right, Kristen, if another R&B artist made Suit & Tie, it would have flopped, because that R&B act would have lacked the mainstream appeal that Justin has.

  • http://twitter.com/desireechick Kesia Monteith

I think he’s about to hit a million at this rate…

  • KrisKD

I love Suit & Tie. It is my favorite lead single of his. I prefer it to Mirrors. I do love the outro to Mirrors though. As a long-time fan, I am so proud of how well Justin is doing. It is not too many people who can take so many years off and still have people interested in their music and sell even more than they did with their previous albums. I love this album. There is not one song that I dislike. It truly is an experience from start to finish.

  • jpfan2

The current update at HDD with about 69% in shows no changes in any numbers but JT’s. I’m going to say that the chart that came out yesterday will be final numbers for everyone but him. S&T should probably end up below a million but pretty close.

  • Madilo

sometimes it has 0.1… something update but it’s not frequent so i think it’s ok, nothing alarmant lol

  • Indigobunting

Not a JT fan (of his music- I do like his acting and love seeing him on SNL) and don’t enjoy this music but wow, good for him.

Re Kacey Musgraves- the answer is Yes, she will be a player in Country Music; she’s a breath of fresh air and although I’m not the biggest folkie type music listener I love her album. Her debut is extremely impressive for a woman newbie who is not an American Idol (yes, she released independently, but that isn’t really counted-just like Idols) and her debut number is refreshingly due to strong critical reviews for her album.

  • Madilo

i hope he can reach 1 million, it would be so cool

  • KrisKD

You are definitely not the only one that liked Suit & Tie. I think that is obvious by its sales and how well it has done on Rhythmic, Urban, and Pop. I know for some people it was a grower but I liked it from the very beginning. I definitely thing it is the type of song that you never get tired of hearing. For me, it still sounds fresh after hearing it several times.

Well, she was on the fifth season of Nashville Star. She got 7th place. But I think it’s helped that she’s been trucking around the Texas Country Music scene for quite a few years now. She did a duet with a popular Texas Country and I know that’s when I heard of her and started to take note. It also helps that she wrote Miranda Lamberts current single. But all that aside, the album is amazing.

  • iani

I don’t like it either the Suit& Tier song, for me has been like “let’s hide the sexy back, yeah”, hello the retro quickstep moves-classy-nerdy look. It’s great for him he sells so much thought, he’s not the only artist who sells a lot of albums no matter what, based on successful carrier built over the years on hit songs-back then.

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

First off, you know how yesterday I posted a blog called What’s With The Country Music Surge On Mainstream TV? Yesterday’s Billboard Country Update lead story was: “The New Reality: Country Turns It Up On TV” and talked about Trace Adkins on Celebrity Apprentice, Kellie Pickler on Dancing With The Stars, Blake Shelton on The Voice, and Keith Urban on American Idol. More on the actual article later but I’m going to simultaneously pat myself on the back for a timely post and reassure ya’ll that I’m not so deluded (YET) that I think Billboard is taking its cues from me ;) BTW there’s some great comments and discussions going on in that thread.

There were 3 recurrents out of the t30 at Billboard, with Little Big Town, Tim McGraw, and Toby Keith all going recurrent. Next week, there’s a chance of either or both Idols currently charting going recurrent at Billboard: Carrie would have to drop out of the t10, which is possible though Two Black Cadillacs would have to accelerate its losses and either George Strait, Eric Church, or Darius Rucker would have to accelerate their gains, and Kelly would have to have a solid loss of audience, which is also possible. It’s also possible Jana Kramer will go recurrent at Billboard. There were 2 recurrents at Mediabase: Tim McGraw and Toby Keith. Next week at Mediabase, there will be 3 recurrents: Little Big Town and Kacey Musgraves out of the t20 and Love & Theft out of the t40.

Carrie’s Two Black Cadillacs has peaked, and dropped from #2 to #5 Billboard and #1 to #4 Mediabase. Its dropoff at Billboard is notably lower than the dropoffs for several other recent hits. Here’s 2BC’s dropoff as a percentage of other recent dropoffs:

    2BC/Tim McGraw’s One Of These Nights (3 week Billboard #1): 110.6%

    2BC/Little Big Town’s Tornado: 68.6%

    2BC/Taylor Swift’s Begin Again: 54.6%

    2BC/Brad Paisley’s Southern Comfort Zone: 45.9%

So 2BC’s dropoff was slightly higher than the dropoff for Tim McGraw’s song but significantly less than the dropoffs for Tornado, Begin Again, and Southern Comfort Zone. That supports the idea that the push for 2BC wasn’t that aggressive.

Although Carrie tweeted out that See You Again is her new single, the song has not been sent to radio yet, nor has an adds date been announced. This week is going to be about Blake’s heinous new single Boys Round Here, and Luke Bryan is going to own next week with his new single. Little Big Town’s next single (Your Side Of The Bed) is known but has also not yet been sent to radio. I’d guess LBT’s single will go for adds 4/8 and maybe See You Again will be announced/go for adds 4/15.

Kelly’s Don’t Rush did not have a great week, though it maintained its bullet and moved up 3 spots to #27. DR was flat for the week, losing 38k AIs, which is better than the 63k AIs Jana Kramer lost but still. Easton Corbin still isn’t a threat to pass this coming week though he closed to 1.021 million AIs behind by gaining 448k and will start picking up countdown spins this weekend. Since DR is 21 weeks old, a down week could send it recurrent. Based on improved callout I feel like the song has the ability to grow if the label sticks with it. On the other hand having a bad week after making the t30 is not a great sign. Too, with the ACMs coming up, it may be that Kelly and the label will pull the plug and send out You Ain’t Gonna Like This. This morning’s MB update shows a good-sized spin loss but a small AI gain which points to a loss of an overnight syndicated spin. DR did pick up 2 adds this week so lots of mixed signals right now. DR could still pass Jana Kramer’s Whiskey which is 341k ahead but Jana’s song had the better MB update this morning. If DR stays on the chart, it could move up to #26 if Carrie goes recurrent.

At MB/Aircheck DR held onto its bullet but lost 8 points and held at #28. Jana Kramer closed to 200 points back by gaining 101 points. Other than Jana there are no immediate threats to pass so DR could end the week as high as #26, #27 in the worst case.

Tate Stevens’s Power Of A Love Song moved up 5 spots at Billboard to #53 by gaining 78k. It’s still very tight in that part of the chart but I’m going to guess Tate will move up a spot to #52 next week. Blake’s new single will pass. Tate’s single is not showing up under Aircheck Activity yet and picked up 1 MB add this week.

Idol-related ads: Columbia Nashville has a nice half page ad for CaseyJ’s The Good Life with a cute fakeout testimonial from the Clear Channel Regional Programming Manager who works at Birmingham, Alabama’s 102.5 The Bull. The ad repeats that TGL goes for adds next Monday.

Recommended reading: As mentioned above Billboard Country Update’s lead story is about country’s increased presence on reality TV. Here’s an excerpt:

It wasn’t that many years ago that Nashville publicists complained—regularly — that they couldn’t get their artists booked even on latenight talk shows, the one mainstream vehicle that seemed the most logical pitch for country.

Now, even primetime reality gigs, while not country-centric, are certainly keeping country in the mix.

It’s fair to say that country’s performance on “Idol” has played a big part in the turn-around. Carrie Underwood parlayed the show into a superstar career, while a ream of additional artists—including Pickler, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, Josh Gracin, Kristy Lee Cook, Bucky Covington and Casey James—have had varying degrees of post-“Idol” success as recording and touring acts.

Keith Urban is quoted about country fans being a big part of the viewing audience for these shows and how it made sense to incorporate country into the judging side of The Voice and Idol. Blake talks about scheduling issues. Kellie and Trace are quoted talking about how what they’re doing is “extracurricular” as Kellie puts it – not the core of what they do professionally, but something fun on the side. At the end, Keith addresses the question of returning to Idol again:

Which is why Urban, who now has his Light the Fuse tour booked through Dec. 8, left some very specific holes in the fall calendar. He has no idea if he’ll be back at “Idol” auditions next season.

“We haven’t even talked about it,” Urban says. “But we did have to make provisions on the chance that they want us back, that we want to do it and that we can do it. So we just carved out the time to work around that.”

Meanwhile Country Aircheck leads with a couple stories about radio and new technologies. One story talks about how regular radio is targeting Generation Y and its increased use of smart phones and digital media plus its greater expectation for interactivity and another story talks about the portability of music and how dialed in country fans are into that trend.

Seeing Timberlake’s numbers makes me think there are some people out there chowing down on humble pie today. The Suit&Tie into Mirrors strategy, coupled with some brilliant live performances and fun appearances, worked brilliantly. The guy is an amazing talent and taking time off between albums allows him to come back each time with a new twist on his style.

  • EvenMoreron

Jordin Sparks’ co-write with Ariana Grande The Way (feat. Mac Miller) is #1 on iTunes.

  • Face

I think the initial levels of success of Suit & Tie & Mirrors says a lot about the difference in markets of USA and UK…
S&T didn’t make much of a sales dent here (given JT was huge here in the UK with his 1st two albums)… and the live performance of Mirrors coupled with the fact that it was the more favoured radio song here as well saw it catapult to the UK chart top spot…
I think Mirrors will do very well in the USA, but I also see why Suit & Tie, with its edgier hip hop feel, and with Jay Z as guest was the lead radio single in the US…

  • Face

interesting to see chart positions of The Voice contestants… so far it looks like the WGWG & RnB diva will be the ones to watch… I think the fact they both have oodles of performance experience will be helping them massively…
be interesting to see if multiple similar WGWGs and RnB divas get through the other blind auditions… and if so will these 2 be lost in the mix, or still dominate through the middle round / live stages…

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

I’m thrilled for JT. I think the album is BRILLIANT. I was one of those people chomping at the bit for JT to return to music and he did not disappoint!! I’m hella impressed he was able to come back so strong after being away for so long.

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

    That song is amazing

  • windmills

Congrats Jordin! I haven’t listened to the song but this is a mighty nice feather in her cap.

  • windmills

I’m pretty sure Kacey’s number went up because she was at around 26k at 54.02% reporting and now she’s at 38k. This is key because I really want her to get the #1 country over Luke Bryan’s Spring Break album (which has already been #1 country for several weeks).

  • girlygirl

Not bad iTunes positions for Crystal’s and Archie’s albums, especially given the fact that, aside from Leno last night for Crystal and all the tweets from Archie’s team, neither one has gotten much in the way of promo.

  • taylor

Justin’s number’s are freaking amazing at this time of the year! Just think, his album is #1 in dozens of countries outside of the US.

I wanted to get the Target edition for the extra songs, but every store I went to (across three states last week during Spring Break) was completely sold out through the weekend. There wasn’t a single copy left in any of the stores. The sales people in the area told me every CD they had sold out by midday the first day they put them out and were awaiting more stock. I finally found ONE CD, the last one, at a Walmart. lol

They must have severely underestimated the demand for JT’s new CD! It’s too bad because they could have sold a ton more of the Physical CD over the past week if they had more in stock.

  • Caro3278sweet

Go Kacey Musgraves! I love her. A new favorite.

  • Anny_nanny

    I can’t find this song. It’s a special chart?

    Oops! Already I see.

  • girlygirl

I bought JT’s album. I was very excited about him finally releasing new music. I like the new album, although some of the songs are too long…not just in terms of radio play, but in terms of they start to lose their impact/interest for me. I think several of them would be stronger if they were edited down a bit.

Still, overall, it’s a strong album. I’m not surprised at the sales preductions…people have been harrassing him about making another album for years, he has a huge fanbase and his label promoted the crap out of this.

Good for JT, it’s great to have him back :)

  • Caro3278sweet

I’m looking forward to seeing CaseyJ back on the charts. I have managed to get over my severe disappointment that Drive didn’t get to be a single and am now on board with TGL. It’s a good song. A happy, summer song.

As far as Tate – is he making good progress or just kind of doing blah. My impression is the blah, but maybe I’m missing something.

  • http://www.facebook.com/djafans Fan Dja

Gina Orr is probably very pleased. Not to bad for Indie labels and with one of them out the country for year now.

I agree, Tate’s progress is “blah”. I’m not expecting much, and there’s about to be a new wave of high profile releases sweeping by. I expect even making the t40 to be a challenge.

  • sdmama

Wow, look, #1 album sold 20 times more than #2 album, and passed gold and reaching platinum in, how many days? I had a vague idea that JT was popular, but I did not realize how much popularity he retained over 6 years hiatus. I wasn’t keen on S&T, but like Mirror a lot, and S&T turning into ear worm slowly, this may be his star power. Congratulations! I love that guy. He is such an entertainer, and seems to have a good sense of humor about himself despite that he has been a big star since he was young.

I too can’t wait for Casey J.to be back on the charts.KILT in houston still play coas at least 3 times a day got lucky and heard it twice in 1 day.T.G.L. will be a bigger hit I think.his name is def out there now.

  • Trina

Count me in with those that love Suit & Tie. I like Mirrors better but also love S&T. And yeah LOL I’m sure the peeps on music boards that said JT would flop because he spent too much time away and that S&T wasnt the type of song radio would embrace is chowing down on some crow. Same for the ones who said Justin had no right to be treated like a legend by SNL. IMO hes a legend in the making. What’s really amazing is not so much his longevity but how in a period when album sales decline, his have gone UP since the time Justified came out. Not many can do that.

Good for Jordin! Ariana is a very very popular teen star, but the catch is that only teens know about her currently. I see the song doing well on radio though. It’s been noted that it sounds Mariah-esque, Jordin could’ve even recorded it herself.

  • revolution

Crystal got more promo than you think…the tour was well thought out…lots of media in Chicago, Toledo, Boston, New York, Washington, and Philly…She was also on NPR nationally, and tons of coverage of the Patsy Cline news, that usually included mention of the Album. Crystal’s rise on the itunes chart leveled off before the Leno performance… She also has Rolling Stone, AOL, grammy.com premieres of 4 songs from the album…people wondered what was the real single…seems her new label didn’t care what was called a single, they were creating buzz for the Album…Dead Weight is also on Vevo…She has West coast gigs coming up…

  • fuzzywuzzy

Phenomenal sales for JT’s CD, almost 7 years after the release of his last CD. 20/20 is currently on sale at Amazon for $7.00 and at iTunes for $10.99.

  • patriciajames

Me too …. I was really disappointed about Drive not being the next single and when I had mentioned that to my husband when we went to see CaseyJ perform here in San Jose, opening with TGL, he said he really liked TGL alot, said it sounded very “mainstream country” ….

Gina Orr has done a great job with Crystal. Crystal has been off the map for a couple of years and still got some great promo, topped by her well-received tour, Rolling Stone and Leno. Not quite sure what Gina has done for David Archuleta promotion wise but whatever it is, it seems to be working because he is surprisingly close to Crystal on the iTunes charts.
