With 54.02% reporting in, Adele is currently handily beating the feisty lad band from her home country. One Direction is not out of the game yet and are hoping to top the final chart. Adele’s “21″ is in first and her “19″ is in 6th. 1D is currently 2nd.

Whitney Houston’s sales are starting to fade. Leading the charge is “Whitney – The Greatest Hits” at 4th followed by “I Look to You” at 7th and the “Bodyguard” at 10th. “Whitney Houston”, “Just Whitney” and “Triple Feature” and “I’m Your Baby Tonight” are hovering just outside the top 10 at 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th. “MY love Is Your Love” is at 20th.

The ever-popular NOW series (now numbering 41) is 4th and Bruce, last week’s chart topper” is 5th. Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean represent Country with 8th and 9th.

Jason Aldean’s album features a prominent duet with Kelly Clarkson. She also appears on her solo album “Stronger” at 17 and the Grammy Nominees album at 23rd. The Grammy album also features Voice judges Blake, Christina and Adam. Blake’s solo album is at 31st. Last year’s Idol winner, Scotty McCreery, is at 27th

More than half have reported in and One Direction is more than 21K off of Adele’s numbers. That seems strange they said it would be closer probably 10K difference. Can’t wait to see who comes out on top before I saw these numbers I was positive 1D would pull it off now i’m thinking not gonna happen.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

It’s 54% of the RETAILERS reporting, not 54% of the overall total. I don’t think Walmart has reported in yet. 1D had a Walmart Exclusive with them and they were charting way above Adele on their web site.

Haley’s single is out now. MJ can you put a thread up for discussion please?

And it’s here! YOUNG HOMIE video!

What a great, feel good vid. I didn’t watch X Factor other than a handful of performance vids, so I’ve never heard this song before. It instantly felt like a hit song to me.

The Young Homie video is really good; the message of the song came through nicely, at least to me :)

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update & Country Aircheck:

There were 2 recurrents with Keith Urban and Kenny Chesney going recurrent with You Gonna Fly and Reality respectively. I’m not expecting any Billboard recurrents in the t10 next week though George Strait’s Love’s Gonna Make It Alright is probably going to take a nosedive this week. I figure it’ll be 2 Billboard recurrents (Dierks Bentley and King George) 2 weeks from now. Maybe 3 depending on how hard Taylor Swift’s Ours crashes. Carrie moved up 4 spots passing Jason Aldean & Tim McGraw and gaining 2.350 million AIs. She’s about 1.1 million AIs behind Miranda Lambert at #10 and outgained her by about a million this week so it could be tight between them next week for the #10 spot. Behind Good Girl, Eric Church’s smash in the making Springsteen is at #16 and gained 3.260 million AIs which leaves it about 5.2 million AIs behind Good Girl. IMO that one’s a biggie to watch and likely to be a multi week #1. At this rate it would catch Good Girl in about 6 weeks so they’re likely to be competing for the top spot.
CaseyJ had a so-so week gaining 449k AIs and moving up 2 spots to #22. LDCIAN did temporarily hold off Luke Bryan’s new single Drunk On You but that song is definitely passing next week. Josh Turner’s Time Is Love at #21 outgained LDCIAN by about 550k so that gap is back up to almost 800k.
Lauren had an OK week gaining 219k AIs and moving up 2 spots to #28. Georgia Peaches gained a little ground on Andy Gibson’s single at #27 (which lost 66k) but got outgained by The Farm and Dustin Lynch who trail by only 39k and 89k AIs respectively. Another week like this one and they’ll both pass. But, that would still leave GP in the t30. The Band Perry’s probably going to be a factor in a few weeks, and maybe Easton Corbin, Chris Young, and Toby Keith somewhat after that. But, there should be enough recurrents to offset that. Safe in the t30 (on both charts for now) which is key.
Kelly moved up 4 spots to #48 with a strong gain (for that part of the chart) of 450k and +33 plays. We know from Mediabase that Houston’s KLIT autoadded with 21 spins so the song is basically charting because of some major markets giving it bigtime spins. David Nail and possibly Toby Keith are threats to pass next week, and Chris Young will be a factor in a couple weeks. Kelly gained 190 points on Mediabase/Aircheck and has a total of 546 points through 79 spins. The #50 song has 660 points so MKIA’s not that far off from charting at Mediabase. But, there’s people like Clay Walker and Toby Keith who may block her this week.

On the Indicator chart Kellie’s 100 Proof lost its bullet and dropped 2 spots to #33. It’s only a spin loss of 2 so it could recover but it’s been clear the last few weeks that it’s slowed. tripp_nwcy had told me a few weeks ago that Unlock That Honky Tonk was being tested by Hit Predictor but I don’t know if there was something more to it. I know that’s the song Kellie wanted for a lead single. I prefer 100 Proof but UTHT is catchy (not my favorite though). I’m not sure what’s going on here. Idol related ads: There’s a page 1 ad (1/8 page) for Lauren’s Georgia Peaches that mentions GP being t30 on Mediabase/Aircheck and that she’s on tour with Sugarland this summer.
Recommended read: There’s an interview with a couple Edison Research execs about country radio and expanding it beyond its core (P1) listeners who listen to the on air broadcasts in the new Country Aircheck. There’s more at the link but this is the quote I found most interesting because we’ve talked about the rock influx into country:

The format skews female and so does your data on non-P1 fans using Country. And yet, so many PDs tell us there’s a music movement with edgy male artists (Church, Brantley Gilbert, Dierks, Justin Moore) that seem to appeal to younger demos disillusioned with Rock. How long will that brand of P2 sit through Taylor Swift or Sugarland to be rewarded with Eric Church?
JR: There is an incredible amount of variety within the format right now. If you like traditional, there’s Chris Young and Joe Nichols. If you like edgier, there’s Eric Church and BrantleyGilbert. Lady A and Taylor Swift cover the pop side.

The variety’s overstated because it’s the male country rock side that dominates and there isn’t a whole lot of traditional. But, I thought the point about the edgier/rock side creeping in is interesting and also the idea that people looking for that aren’t necessarily going to want to sit through the soft rock/AC/pop of Lady A and Taylor.

Thanks for the country news, Windmills.  :)

Any idea when Scotty’s TTWG will go recurrent?  And more importantly, when will his next single be released to radio?

Kathleen Moore: Any idea when Scotty’s TTWG will go recurrent?  And more importantly, when will his next single be released to radio?

Scotty’s TTWG is already recurrent on Billboard – it went recurrent last week. TTWG will go recurrent on the Mediabase this Sunday afternoon.

As far as his next single, I’m thinking the PR announcing his new single will come out whenever his Idol appearance is announced. So, sometime in the next couple weeks. They may wait until the morning after the ACMs (assuming WTT is not the next single, if it is then the announcement will come sooner).

    Woo Hoo! Go 1D!

I know the final numbers will change a bit but I think they’ve got enough of a cushion ahead of Adele (21K) to hang onto the #1 position.

    4. 21 – ADELE
    5. Up All Night (Deluxe Version) – One Direction
    11. Up All Night – One Direction
    19. Casey James – Casey James
    30. 19 – ADELE

Am I looking at the wrong chart in iTunes? It shows Casey’s album is #14 all genres.

In the final numbers he was below the Top 50, so he’s not listed.

For those asking about CAD.  It’s not listed in the final #’s here because it fell out of the top 50 with the final update.

I’m not surprised. If boybands actually stay together, getting #1 would likely be a common occurrence.

As far as I know, a boyband hasn’t had as successfull a billboard performance since 2008…(Day26 #1-$190,000).

A girl band, platinum selling group Danity Kane, actually charted better than the boys EACH time they released an album (2006, #1-$234,000. 2008, #1-$236,000)

I believe that there has always been a market for boybands…the key is to put together as few egomaniacs as possible…because US bands usually break up soon after their success.

British bands seem to be different…i wish 1D and The Wanted much success (and longevity)

Well i’ll be one direction got to number 1. They must be ecstatic they’re the first X-factor act since Leona Lewis to make it here.

Their success makes me so surprised Intensity didn’t take they had 5 or 6 boys who were cute and the girls looked cute they were all good singers what happened. I guess they were really too large to work. I always thought if we saw a group formed on television it would work but none of the groups took.  Hmm possible flaws Intensity -too big audience couldn’t focus. Stereo Hogzz I think they peaked at Judges Houses and the 1st live show after that they started to get corny. Lakoda Rayne -too engineered tried to be country and country fans weren’t buying into it.
