With just over 50% of reports in, Bon Jovi leads the charge (remember back in Season 6 when Bon Jovi was a mentor and a lot of people thought Lakisha was going to crash and burn because she could no longer pick a song from the “Little Book of Big Diva Songs” and she walked into the room and told Jon she’d never even heard of him before? Remember how she absolutely killed it? Sometimes, those theme shows that forced people out of their boxes yielded the best results. Just sayin’). Bon Jovi will have the top album and top debut of the week.

Right behind them is Luke Bryan with his annual spring break release. David Bowie is debuting in 3rd, Bruno is an unorthodox machine who just keeps selling in 4th, the Sound-City Soundtrack is in 5th, Florida Georgia Line is another act for Scott to manipulate to number one on the Country charts and is currently 6th, P!nk is 7th, Now 45 (featuring Phil, 1D and Kelly) is 8th, Eric Clapton is 9th and Imagine Dragons fills out the top 10.

Phillip Phillips is riding high from his Idol performance and surges to 14th. One Direction is currently in 36th with their second album. Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” is 41st while Kelly Clarkson’s Greatest Hits are at 43. Now 44 at 40th features Kelly and Carly Rae as does the Grammy Nominations CD at 42nd.

Oh the horror, a 12 year old show getting lows! Idol had an incredible run, you can’t remain king forever.

  • justmefornow

    LOL. No kidding.
But look at those numbers, How come it hasn’t been a steady year after year decline that would be expected of a aging show.
Why the blip up to decent ratings for S10?
    – Because it was a very diverse music genre cast. This year, just the opposite and tanking ratings.
They have no one to blame but themselves.

  • blackberryharvest

There’s only so much they can do, Season 10 was an exception because there were no other music shows flooding the marketplace. Plus the cast was miles better than 9. Now its in its 12th year with other singing shows airing in the fall and now idol is no longer “event” television. Not to mention it is 12 years old and its ratings decline would be inevitable. No show is king forever or lasts forever and idol is no exception.

  • justmefornow

The Voice was on the same year then in it’s first season, the one where Javier Colon won, but yes, XFactor hadn’t started yet.

I agree that the show is old. But my point is that by limiting the music genres represented this year, TPTB have made it worse of a ratings decline than it could have possibly been with a more diverse cast.
It just seems they did everything wrong and are actually speeding up the show’s decline.

The Voice was airing right at the end of Season 10 so it didn’t have an impact. The ratings started out lower this season compared to last before people knew who the cast would be, so its not that either.

  • justmefornow

But the ratings have been dropping each week this year. In other more popular years the ratings increased week to week if the cast was appealing and interesting to watch.
If the ratings start to rise from now on this season, then this could be attributed to this year’s cast being appealing as well.
If they continue the downward trend, one can assume the opposite.
    We’ll see.

Lots of factors are responsible for the lower ratings but I think the cast isn’t helping matters. I like some of the girls but it’s not going to be a very interesting season when all the guys are basically fodder.

  • blackberryharvest

Ratings have always decreased from the auditions then go back up once we get to the end.

This last week was also daylight savings time, and yes, it is a legit excuse. Tvbythenumbers even had an article about the trend.

It was another popular Idol winner from the season before returning to the Idol stage for the first time with a new song from their debut album. It’s a good and fair comparison.
What kind of album boost did Cook get when he returned to the Idol stage for the first time? How about Jordin? Carrie?

Thank you very much for data collecting and excellent analysis!
The only thing I’d wished the dates those performances took place (or maybe the numeric number of elimination show top10, top 5 etc) were included as well. For me, it would allow to put the results in the context of Idol ratings and industry overall sales.
But anyway this one goes into bookmarks and thank you again!

  • Madilo

don’t forget the period they appreared because it’s key (january, february and march are not known for huge sales )
i don’t know if the time is the same but if not then the comparison might be biased IMO

She’s performed on it before though? I know she said she wouldn’t judge because she wanted to keep her private life private, but I don’t think a mentoring session would violate that mantra.
