With 54.98% of reports now in, rapper NAS is easily out in 1st (selling more than twice as much as second place). With Urban artists tending to do better on the second day, nobody can threaten to take away his lead. “Life is Good” is his tenth studio album. Looks like life is indeed good for him.

Nipping at his heels are those ankle biters, Kidz Bop. The Kidz Bop series feature a bunch of no-name kids covering a bunch of popular songs. Doesn’t sound like a long-term recipe for success to me, but then I watch Idol which is nothing but covers. Anyway, they frequently cover songs by Idols, this time (round 22) they have Kelly’s “Stronger” as the lead-off track followed by Carly’s “Call Me Maybe”. Maroon 5′s “Payphone” and 1Ds “What Makes You Beautiful” are also on there. Somebody even gets named because there is some 8 year old youtube sensation singing “Set Fire to the Rain”. I’m sure he has the real life experience to sell that. What is with little boys tackling that song? They are also covering “Somebody that I Used to Know”, so lots of bitter post-break-up kids out there this time around. So you can go and take that little piece of * with you….

The Zac Brown Band was 1st last week and is currently 3rd. The soundtrack for the latest Batman movie is debuting in 4th, Justin Beiber is leveling out his sales at 5th, Adele is 6th, X-Factor’s One Direction is 7th and Kenny Chesney is 8th, Chris Brown (Blah!) is 9th and Luke Bryan continues to sell well at 10th.

The first Idol that shows up on the chart is, as usual, Carrie Underwood (16th). She just keeps moving those units and with another single marching up the charts, she should continue to do well. Next up is Phil Phillips with rock steady sales of his Walmart album. Every week, he’s in around the 20s and this week he is currently at 19th. Finally, we have Kelly who’s solo album is at 31 while also appearing on Now 42 at 15th and Jason Aldean’s album at 27th. 1D is also on the Now 42 album.

Finally, the judges from the Voice. Maroon 5 (featuring judge Adam) is at 12th and Blake is on Now Country 5 at 24th.

Looks like another slow week, but at least Adele is moving back up. Yay.

  • windmills

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

There were 2 recurrents at Billboard: Luke Bryan & The FARM. Brantley Gilbert and Toby Keith are likely to go recurrent at Billboard next week. At Mediabase/Aircheck there was 1 recurrent this week and there should be 2 next week (Brantley Gilbert & The FARM).

EDIT: UGHx10. Apparently Toby Keith’s got an hourly Clear Channel deal going, so you can bump everybody’s projected Billboard/MB rankings down a spot.

Carrie’s Blown Away had another strong week (helped by t40 countdown spins) gaining 2.884 million AIs and moving up 2 spots to #28 (Jason Aldean debuted ahead of BA). BA moved within 130k of Chris Young’s Neon (which it outgained by over 2.5 million AIs) and 490k of Lady A’s Wanted You More (which it outgained by 2.276 million AIs). With t30 countdown spins being phased in over the next couple weeks, BA’s a good bet to pass those 2 songs this week. BA also moved up to 990k behind Lee Brice’s Hard To Love, which it outgained by 2.108 million AIs and a little under 1.7 million AIs behind Rascal Flatts’ Come Wake Me Up which it outgained by a little over 2 million AIs. There’s a chance if things break right of BA moving up to #22 Billboard this week including recurrents if BA keeps up last week’s pace this week. I expect it to slow a little bit though and it’s more likely BA will end the week at #23 or #24 Billboard.

At MB BA gained 1917 points to move up to #30. Other than The FARM which will go recurrent this week anyway, the next attainable target to pass is Lady A’s song which is 860 points ahead and which BA outgained by about 1350 points. Chris Young’s Neon is a little over 2k points ahead and got a couple big adds in Aircheck this week so I think the push is on to get that song going. I don’t see BA passing Chris this week but it’s possible BA will pass Lady A’s song this week to move up to #27 MB/Aircheck.

CaseyJ’s COAS had an OK week gaining 296k AIs at Billboard and holding at #38. Kip Moore and Eric Church both passed this week (so did Jason Aldean) and it’s not likely CaseyJ will repass either of them. But, COAS is now only 285k AIs behind Kristen Kelly’s Ex Old Man which COAS outgained by around 315k AIs this week so COAS could pass that song and pick up 2 spots with recurrents to move up to #35 Billboard since there aren’t any immediate threats to pass.  CaseyJ is listed among the t10 most added at Billboard with 7 new adds.

At MB/Aircheck COAS gained 445 points and leads Kirsten Kelly by 56 points. That’s not a lot but the trend is in CaseyJ’s favor seeing as he’s already passed her and has been outgaining her song the last few days. CaseyJ has closed to 114 points behind Eden’s Edge’s Amen and outgained them by 259 points last week so he’s trending to pass them. Phil Vassar’s Don’t Miss Your Life is also within reach seeing as it’s just under 400 points ahead and COAS outgained it by almost 630 points last week. On the flip side, Kip Moore’s Beer Money is closing and its pickup of Sunday countdown spins will be reflected in this week’s chart. I think it’s likely to pass this week. I think CaseyJ will probably be safe from being passed by anybody else this week (including Eric Church) so that should net him a 3 spot gain to #33 MB at the end of the week.

Scotty’s WTT regained its Billboard bullet despite losing 27k AIs and moved up 2 spots to #40 in its 15th week. WTT’s position in the Billboard t40 should be safe this week if it can hang on. Luke Bryan’s Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye could threaten this week (it’s a little under 900k AIs behind) and will definitely pass next week if it doesn’t pass this week.

At MB/Aircheck WTT was down 59 points. Chris Cagle’s Let There Be Cowgirls is 372 points behind and gained 204 points last week so it’s a threat to pass. But if WTT can pick up some spins this week then it should actually make MB t40 this week after 2 recurrents are removed, which means countdown spins. Whether WTT makes MB t40 this week or next week, its position there should be safe for now as long as it can hold steady or gain.

Lauren’s 18 Inches debuted at #55 with 510k AIs (+259k AIs). The 7 songs directly ahead of Lauren are all within 200k AIs of her and 18 Inches outgained all of them. I’d say 18 Inches has a great chance of passing 6 out of those 7 if it can even gain 150k AIs next week. On the flip side Brantley Gilbert debuted with his new single which goes for adds next week so odds are Kick It In The Sticks will pass 18 Inches. Florida-Georgia Line’s also lurking off the charts with 342k AIs. With 2 recurrents though I think 18 Inches has a great chance of making Billboard t50 next week. 18 Inches didn’t make Billboard’s Most Added this week (it had 3 adds last week) which means Billboard counted less than 7 adds in its reporting period.

At MB/Aircheck 18 Inches is showing up under Aircheck Activity with 512 points off 161 spins. The #50 song this week had 695 points but it looks like Parmalee, Katie Armiger, Craig Morgan, and Luke Bryan will all compete to make the MB chart this week.

Recommended read: Billboard Country Update’s lead story is about all the truck songs at country radio. They talked to songwriters Brett Beavers and Dan Wilson, who cowrote the truckless Dierks Bentley hit Home with him, and also Kip Moore, who scored his breakthrough #1 hit with Somethin Bout A Truck:

The Nashville songwriting community has been quite aware of the truck’s recent prevalence. It’s why Bentley and Beavers were so thrilled to write “Home” without a pickup—and why one occasionally sees an eye roll from Music Row executives when the topic gears up. That made Moore a little concerned that “Somethin’ ’Bout a Truck” would be perceived as a cliché.

Kip Moore explained why he was worried and then the Universal Nashville promotion head basically says it was never an issue.

That’s because the fears of truck oversaturation are based on the industry’s self-analysis and not in the real world, according to Capitol/EMI senior VP of promotion Steve Hodges, who regularly reminds his staff to ignore what it hears in the “glass bubble” of Music Row. The truck is “such a common part of our format’s core lifestyle—especially the male core of our audience,” Hodges maintains. “That’s their vehicle of choice.”

The conclusion of the article is the truck songs haven’t hit saturation point yet at country radio. *le sigh*

Lloyd Cole won South Africa’s most prestigious award for Best Pop Album earlier this year. That is the album that includes his cover of Kris’ song, Before We Come Undone.

Anyone know if the individual writers on albums get any sort of award if they have a cut on an album that wins something like this?

Speaking of KidzBop, the girl who won the contest that Kris helped judge last fall just released her single and video. I saw Sony tweet about it.

Will this be the week One Direction crosses 1 million in album sales?

  • Mateja Praznik

Probably. They need to sell around 30K.

    1D’s album certainoy has legs…

that must be 4 months now that they’ve been in the US top 10… and almost a million sales…

esp impressive given the general state of album sales stateside and globally
