With 68.46% of reports in, it’s obvious that the Grammy high is gone and we’re are rapidly crashing back into the grim Q1 album numbers. Mumford and Sons are saving us from total number shock and their Grammy Album of the Year “Babel” is expected to sell 60-65K to top the chart. Bruno Mars needn’t worry about his impersonator/”All About Eve” Elijah Lui because he has the number two album of the week. Now 45 (featuring Idol Kelly, Phil and One Direction) rounds out the top 3.

Josh Groban who laughs at radio airplay is number 4. This guy is just going to keep selling week-after-week. Just watch. The Grammy Nominees (featuring Kelly and Carly Rae Jepsen) slides to 5th while BNA nominees Alabama Shakes rises sharply to 6th (they were on Saturday Night Live). Taylor Swift is 7th followed by Tim McGraw. The “Pitch Perfect” Soundtrack at 9th is showing much longer legs than the movie ever did. What’s up with that? The DVD is selling pretty well. Sometimes Soundtracks just connect. Rihanna is unapologetic as she finishes up the top 10.

The reality contestants are all clumped together around 30th. Carrie Underwood leads the charge with blown away at 27th. One Direction’s “Take Me Home”, Phil Phillips “World from the Side of the Moon” and Kelly Clarkson’s Greatest hits are 30th, 31st and 32nd respectively. One Direction’s previous album clings to the bottom of the chart at 50th. Now 44 is 43rd and features Kelly and Carly Rae.

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

There was 1 recurrent at Billboard: Gary Allan’s recent #1 hit. This coming week the Jason Aldean/Luke Bryan/Eric Church collab I expected to go recurrent last week will definitely go recurrent. There’s a chance that after its crazy label push last week Taylor’s Begin Again will fall out of the t10 and go recurrent at Billboard too. At Aircheck/Mediabase there were 3 recurrents: Jason/Luke/Eric, Chris Cagle, and CaseyJ. This coming week Brad Paisley will go current at Aircheck/Mediabase.

Carrie’s Two Black Cadillacs had a solid week at Billboard gaining 1.813 million AIs and moving up 2 spots to #6. Blake closed to about 1.013 million AIs behind by outgaining 2BC by 404k AI. 2BC closed to 1.152 million AIs behind Dierks Bentley’s Tip It On Back by outgaining it by 991k, and judging from this morning’s MB update, the push for Dierks’s song is finally over. You can also expect Taylor Swift to crash hard this week. 2BC also gained 556k on LBT’s Tornado but LBT is 2.624 million AIs ahead and I expect them to stay ahead until they hit #1 (which will be after Tim McGraw’s 2nd week at #1). Look for 2BC to move up to #4 Billboard by the end of the week.

At Aircheck/Mediabase, 2BC had a solid week gaining 1012 points. Blake’s single closed to 1025 points behind by outgaining 2BC by 321 points. 2BC outgained Dierks’s song by 36 points but like I said, Tip It On Back took a pretty big hit this morning and is finally done. In fact 2BC passed Tip It On Back this morning to move up to #5. 2BC also closed slightly on LBT last week, outgaining them by 230 points to close the gap to 1974 points. I expect 2BC to have a pretty good week this week, and possibly pass The Band Perry and Taylor Swift to end the week at #3. Carrie is cohosting Country Countdown USA next week, which gives a hint as to when the label thinks 2BC is likely to hit #1. Odds are it will be the week after she cohosts CCUSA.

Kelly’s Don’t Rush had a solid week at Billboard gaining 567k and moving up a spot to #30. DR isn’t going to pass anybody still bulleted in front of it but it should get some extra adds from making t30, and it’ll start getting countdown spins this weekend (and round 2 of countdown spins next weekend). The Tim/Taylor collab I’ve been predicting would pass DR the last couple of weeks will either pass this week now that the Taylor solo single has finally peaked or next week when Tim gets his 2nd week at #1 Billboard. Easton Corbin isn’t likely to pass in the next couple weeks: DR actually outgained All Over The Road this week by 195k. Jason Aldean’s lolzy new single 1994 is likely to pass this week but that will be offset by Jason’s collab with Luke and Eric going recurrent. I’m going to guess DR holds at #30 this week but there’s a possibility it’ll drop a spot to #31. That won’t affect any countdown spins it gets.

At Aircheck/Mediabase DR also made t30, gaining 359 points and moving up to #29. Jake Owen’s single outgained DR by 538 points and trails by 583 points. DR may hold it off this week because of countdown spins but it’s a matter of time before Jake passes, especially since Jake is going to make t30 Mediabase this week and start picking up countdown spins himself. There are no other immediate threats to pass – Jason’s new single will probably take 2 weeks to pass and the Tim/Taylor collab will probably take 2 or 3 weeks to pass. Look for DR to end the week either at #28 or #29 this week. The good thing is its t30 spot isn’t vulnerable to songs passing, so DR isn’t going to get countdown spins coming off.

Idol-related ads: Columbia Nashville has a full page ad, half of which is devoted to Kelly’s DR celebrating the fact that it’s t30 on both charts now and talking about its strong feedback from female radio listeners, plus its new adds at stations like LA’s KKGO and syndicated programs like After Midnite. There’s a banner across the bottom of that ad saying a new CaseyJ single hits radio 4/1, so right around when I was predicting :) No hints of what that single might be but I’d guess we’ll get at least a hint at CRS depending on what CaseyJ performs at the Sony boat show (it’s an assumption he’ll play there).

RCA Nashville has a full page ad for Tyler Farr, whose single just went for adds, but no mention of Tate’s single going for adds 3/11. There’s still next week and the week after that for ads, but I’m not feeling much interest or much of a push right now. I assume Tate will play the Sony CRS boat show this week and we’ll see how much he makes the rounds meeting radio people during CRS.

Recommended reading: Page 10 of Country Aircheck has the “after hours” guide to this week’s CRS events, which includes several of the big CRS events not on the official CRS schedule. That includes the Big Machine Label Group/CMT Radio CRS Kickoff showcase that will include performances by Tim McGraw, The Band Perry, Justin Moore, Thomas Rhett, and Cassadee Pope, who is also one of the BMLG acts scheduled to perform at the ACM Party For A Cause on April 5th in Vegas, which is one of the lead up events to the ACM Awards. Heh. Cassadee mentioned in a recent interview that she’s basically making pop/rock music but they’re marketing to country because the lyrics “tell stories.” This could be lolzy. Raelynn is not mentioned as one of the people on the BMLG lineup.

The Opry at CRS show is mentioned, with Scotty among the many performers. So is Thursday evening’s General Jackson Show & Cruise, which is Sony Nashville’s big showcase event, but no roster is mentioned (it’s generally not revealed in advance). Blake will be part of the Warner Nashville showcase on Wednesday night.

There aren’t really any new rumors or clues at this point. Everybody was surprised when Two Black Cadillacs was the 3rd single off Blown Away and Arista Nashville/Carrie are usually pretty good at keeping the next single under wraps until it’s time. I wouldn’t believe any rumors now.

That being said Carrie’ll likely be performing at the Sony boat show on Thursday. I’m guessing she’ll play 2BC and Blown Away. But if she sings 2BC and a different album track then that’s where the label’s likely leaning.

I don’t know what caused this, but GGG go up. I understand that this is a trifle, but it’s pleasant. Waiting for the return of Top-100.

  • jpfan2

GGG is up because P2 did it on the Elvis Duran show this morning (a big NYC station that’s heard around the U.S.) Breaking the top 100 would be a nice move (even if only temporary).

Well, I don’t think there was any doubt about TBC. Mark Bright was on record saying it was the best song on the Album and his favorite. I knew it would be a single since it had a radio edit from the studio early on. I’m playing with another act performing on that boat Thursday so I’ll make sure I pay attention to Carries performance if she’s there.

  • sdmama

I am hoping that his return to American Idol might push GGG up a bit more. There has to be some people left in the viewer that only bought Home and not album, that we can convince to get GGG, too.  LOL.

Most people expected 2BC to be a single at some point because we knew there was a radio edit and all that. But people weren’t expecting it to follow Blown Away because that was 2 dark singles in a row with a body count and Carrie’d been showcasing Do You Think About Me a lot.

There’s always rumors about the next Carrie single. More often than not they don’t pan out. I definitely have my preferences but I can’t change what the label picks. If the next single isn’t what I’d like then I’ll whine a little but be glad they picked 3 killer singles to start off the Blown Away era.

Enjoy your time on the boat Thursday night :)

I have predicted 13K for “The World” two weeks ago, but have completely forgotten about Valentine’s Day and it’s uplifting power (not really celebrated in my neck of the woods).
Now Phil is going back to the numbers he would have posted if not the the VD bump.
