No wonder Lionel quit “Duets”. He’s got some major marketing mojo working for him and is living at the top of HDD chart. He doesn’t need any new duet partners. While one could dismiss his first week of topping the chart as a result of his appearing on a CBS special, the dude is still selling well weeks later. Clearly, he’s found an untapped market for 80s Pop tunes re-imagined as Country duets. Right now, Duran Duran and Madonna are fighting over the phone number for Zac Brown’s agent.

Nevertheless, Lionel is not predicted to top the final chart this week (he’s set to finish third). The chart topper is predicted to be a debuting Jack White for his first time ever. There are two Country acts also set to debut in the top 10, Lee Brice and Kip More (currently 3rd and 5th). Luke Bryan, who has been kicking around the top 10 for quite some time, is there again this week at number 9.

To match up the trio of Country artists in the top 10, there are 3 British acts. Adele is currently at second (as she often is when she’s not first or third) while rival British Boy Bands One Direction and The Wanted are currently 6 and 7. Nikki Minaj and Train complete the top 10 at 8 and 10th respectively.

Kelly Clarkson is the only solo Idol in the top 50. Her “Stronger” album is currently at 27th. She also appears on Jason Aldean’s “My Kinda Party” at 19th. Jennifer Hudson sings the title track on the “Think Like a Man” Soundtrack album at 17 and Chris Richardson is featured on a track on Tyga’s album (47). Voice judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine (in the form of Maroon 5) are at 28 and 45 respectively.

That’s a passionate response, but I doubt that RCA surveyed every PD.  As I recall, it was the opinion of PDs that caused RCA to change Lee Dewyze’s first single from Live It Up to Sweet Serendipity.  I’m not saying that history will repeat itself, just that there are no guarantees, even when RCA gets the  opinion of those in radio.

I think people need to calm down and be patient. The normal doom and gloom naysayers do what they normally do. Even if these Idols get no radio play so what. Their careers no matter how low key or high profile will carry on.

I think it’s too early to be overly optimistic and too early to be pessimistic.  Who knows what will happen.  It’s all up to the label and the program directors.

All those artists released songs that could have been played by pop radio. Pop radio is a melting pot of different genres.
Clay was insanely popular at that time (arguably more than any contestant in the past 5 years), he didn’t get aiplay even tough he had a huge fanbase.

I don’t think the crop of artists coming from recent seasons were more “pop” ready, far from it, so I’m not really getting the difference in treatment from the start to now.
X Factor UK for instance has progressively gone towards a poppier direction and acts like Alexandra Burke, JLS, Olly Murs or 1 Direction, etc. have had big pop hits, which is a contrast to earlier season who produced mainly Shane Ward and Leona.

I am not ready to throw in the towel on radio play for Adam.  He is just too wonderfully talented, smart and charismatic not to make his dreams a reality.  In addition he has a powerful label and many people respected in the industry on his side.  If radio didn’t think he was a draw to their listeners, it would make no sense for them to book him for concerts.  A lot of people who are trying to get radio play would love to be included in these gigs, and I refuse to think they have no meaning.

Clay had a huge fanbase, but he wasn’t going to get airplay on pop anymore than Taylor Hicks’ was.  Both Clay and Taylor are great examples that radio pds have never been fooled by big AI fanbases, and that they know that many of these fans are fans of the tv star, and not the contestants, and that the fans do not normally listen to pop stations, so why should they program the music of someone like Clay?

I’ve always found it funny that people expected the fanbases to sway the opinion of program directors, who want to appeal to people who will listen to their stations all of the time, and not just when their AI fave is on.  The PDs know that these people won’t change their musical tastes, and won’t turn into regular listeners of the station.

And we’ll just have to disagree, but to my ears what Clay, Bo, and the others that you mentioned, released were not pop songs.

Nobody said that the concerts and station visits have no meaning.  It’s been said a million times that these things are expensive, so labels would pay for them, if there was no hope that they wouldn’t lead to the PDs playing their artists music.  What has been said, and I guess misinterpreted or completely ignored, is that there are no guarantees that these things will lead to airplay.

Someone mentioned Chris Renee earlier, and actually listed the number of stations that he visited that are playing his song, and the ones that haven’t.  Z100 had Adam in to promote BTIKM, but they didn’t play it.  One that I always bring up is that they had John Mayer in to talk about the first single from his last album, and they had him perform at the Jingle Ball that year, but they never played the song.

KIIS in LA had Matthew Morrison play their Wango Tango concert, but they never played his music, and would never play any song that he released.  His music just doesn’t fit their format.  But, they were happy to have the guy from Glee show up for their event.

True, there are no guarantees in radio, it’s a gamble and all the labels and the stations are fully aware of how it works. But hopefully if a label books enough radio station events for an artist, at least some of those stations will get on board provided they don’t hate the song. To use Adam as an example, a couple of the stations he is doing radio concerts for have jumped on NCOE early. And a couple of the stations he visited in San Francisco are early adopters as well, and this particular market did not really get on board with Adam until late in the game during the FYE era.

So it’s not hopeless or anything, but sometimes it requires more patience than fans seem to have to build up a song’s presence on radio.

LOL I’m going to the Queen concerts in the UK, too. And I’ll probably buy his UK single with the two extra tracks on it as well. I know a lot of fans who are travelling this summer to see him in concert somewhere, even if it’s only a radio concert with a few songs. He gave one concert last summer – in Quebec – and 8800 of us showed up.

    Whatever happens, he’ll do alright.

I’m voting for and requesting Adam’s new single on my local radio station every day (I’m writing in NCOE, even though BTIKM is at #10) and no amount of people running around saying it won’t change anything will stop me.

NCOE is very catchy, has gotten some very nice reviews and Adam has a pretty good track record with Top 40 and HAC radio (WWFM and IIHY to a lesser extent.)

The fact that he is out there giving radio concerts means he’s courting them and I’m not going to let down the back end of his efforts by sitting on my hands. It may not get play if we vote but it definitely won’t get play if we don’t.

Scr*w the other factors. We can’t control the other factors.

I’m sure Stefanos song will slide down, but it got higher than I thought it would and it his idol bump sure lasted longer than a few other idol bumps. He may do well with it. :)

At first I didn’t like Stefano’s song but after a few listens I think it can do very well. It kind of fits with everything that’s out there he just needs radio to jump on board.

With the large majority of singles sent to radio, the first two weeks is almost always too early to be OVERLY optimistic. It’s not too early, however, to be optimistic for NCOE. It is showing some good signs of growth early on and there are many good promo opportunities scheduled over the next three weeks that could possibly have a positive effect on this single.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Throw in the towel? The song has been out at radio stations for less than two weeks! We are still being patient and trying to be optimistic with songs that have been out for two months with lower AIs than NCOE has. We should give this song at least that much time.
NCOE has some early adds, a healthy bullet and AI. It is doing well in Canada. These are things to be optimistic about.

Adam’s new cd has signage in Walmart. It’s featured along with the Glee cd so it will be around for a while. Not everyone gets that sort of product placement. It’s a sign that RCA is making the effort and that at least one big retailer is receptive to his marketability.

Just another sign that Adam’s fans should be putting in a supportive effort.

I agree! It’s never a guarantee, lol! They need people for their concerts and usually people they think their listeners want to see perform but sometimes they play their songs, sometimes they don’t. Chris Rene already have 10 radio concerts scheduled for May -July, luckily all those stations are playing him.

I don’t think there have been a lot of Idols releasing slam dunk radio singles lately, so I don’t think its all radio’s fault. Most of the songs have been good songs/so-so singles IMO.

This is true, and it’s always been the case.  The names that were thrown out yesterday, Diana, Bo, Clay and others, just show that the AI label has never been a guarantee that someone would get airplay.  Despite how everyone’s favorite idol alum is the greatest singer ever, the alums still have to have good songs and the support of their labels and management.

If you’re talking about the signage for Trespassing someone spotted yesterday, FYI it was in a Target store not a Walmart, just for accuracy’s sake.

There is signage for Trespassing in Walmart as well as Target.
