HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Apr 15-21

With 52.57% of reports in, Fall Out Boy look like they may have the number one album. That’s pretty impressive considering that “Save Rock and Roll” is coming out almost 5 years after their last album. Five years is a long time in the life of artists on the Pop chart and their style of emo-ish rock isn’t as popular as it once was. Giving them a run for their money will be rapper Kid Cudi who is right behind them and is predicted to sell in the same 150K-ish range.

Justin Timberlake is holding steady at 3rd, Voice Judge Blake Shelton moves up a notch to 4th, The Band Perry is at 5th, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis who should have more than $20 in their bank accounts are at 6th, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are debuting in 7th, Florida Georgia Line is 8th and Paramore moves down from 1st to 9th this week.

Our top selling reality singing show contestant this week is X-Factor’s (UK franchise) Olly Murs. He is rounding out the top 10 by debuting in 10th. While this is his third studio album and he has had a lot of success in the UK (all three albums have sold more than platinum and peaking at 2, 1 and 1 respectively), this is his first serious release in the US. He seems set to exceed the predicted sales from HDD and BB last week.

After Olly, it’s a long drop down to 33rd to Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away”. Kelly Clarkson’s “Greatest Hits” are at 37th followed directly by Phil Phillips at 38th. One Direction climbs back onto the chart 45th. Now 45 features Kelly, One Direction and Phil. It is at 30th.

Reporting in from Billboard Country Update and Country Aircheck:

There was 1 Billboard recurrent last week, Blake Shelton’s Sure Be Cool If You Did and 2 Mediabase recurrents: Hunter Hayes’s Somebody’s Heartbreak and Jerrod Niemann’s Only God Could Love You More. This coming week Lee Brice’s I Drive Your Truck will go recurrent out of the Billboard t10, Rascal Flatts’s Changed will go recurrent out of the Billboard t30, and there is once again a chance Kelly’s Don’t Rush will go recurrent out of the t30. At Mediabase, Lee Brice will go recurrent out of the t10 and Dustin Lynch and Rascal Flatts will go recurrent out of the t30 for a total of 3 recurrents.

Kelly’s Don’t Rush had a down week at Billboard, losing its bullet and losing 142k AIs but getting a grace week on the chart as it dropped a spot to #28. Rascal Flatts dropped below but Luke Bryan’s Crash My Party, Brett Eldredge’s Don’t Ya, and Gary Allan’s Pieces all passed while Hunter Hayes and Jana Kramer stayed ahead. Jana’s Whiskey actually gained 145k and now leads DR by 497k. The updates later this week will tell us if DR will continue treading water or if it’ll suddenly in its 26th week on the chart starting taking off or if RCA Nashville will finally let it go. If DR stays on the chart then it should hold at #28 because Carrie will pass and offset Lee Brice going recurrent. I don’t expect DR to repass Gary Allan or Brett Eldredge’s singles.

At Mediabase/Aircheck DR actually moved up a spot to #25 despite losing 161 points and its bullet. Since Sunday DR has passed Dustin Lynch’s crapfest (which has peaked as is going recurrent anyway) and been passed by Hunter Hayes, who was 596 points as of last Sunday. Gary Allan closed to 634 points behind by outgaining DR by 733 points and Brett Eldredge closed to 654 points behind by outgaining DR by 750 points. So, another week like this one and they’ll both pass DR by the end of the week. Carrie will also pass by the end of the week unless DR starts showing solid gains. So, DR has the chance to move up to #24 Mediabase but is more likely to hold at #25 or drop a spot or 2 to #26 or #27.

Carrie’s See You Again had a great week at Billboard, gaining 4.086 million AIs and moving up 12 spots to #30. See You Again was the 2nd biggest AI gainer of the week (Luke Bryan’s lead single was the greatest gainer, helped by t40 countdown spins coming in last weekend). See You Again will pick up t40 countdown spins for the first time this weekend which should help make for another good week. Carrie will pass Rascal Flatts (which is going recurrent anyway), Kelly, Gary Allan, Brett Eldredge, and Jana Kramer and end the week at #24 with Lee Brice going recurrent.

At Mediabase/Aircheck SYA gained 2,534 points and moved up 17 spots to #34. Since Sunday SYA has moved up to #30 which means it has outgained Craig Morgan by at least 562 points this week. I figure SYA should be good to gain another 2k points this week which means it has a pretty good chance of moving to #24 or #25 this week. SYA will pick up the 1st wave of t30 countdown spins next weekend (not this weekend), and the 2nd wave the weekend after that.

Tate Stevens’s Power Of A Love Song gained 97k and held at #53 in its 6th week on the charts. Lennon & Maisy’s cover of Ho, Hey did pass but that was it. It’s very tight in that part of the chart: Drake White trails by 42k and could pass with another week like this one, Scotty’s See You Tonight could pass (more on that a minute), and it’s a matter of time before Pistol Annies pass (they are probably being held back until Miranda’s solo single peaks). So Tate has a chance of making t50 this week, especially his album release results in some radio promo and extra spins. More likely he’ll move up a spot to #52 or hold at #53. Tate’s single is still not showing up under Aircheck Activity.

CaseyJ’s The Good Life gained 83k to move up 3 spots to #57. Not a great gain this week but even a small gain is better than nothing. Scotty is a strong threat to pass this week but at worst, The Good Life will move up a spot to #55. TGL is showing up under Aircheck Activity with 630 points from 203 spins. The #50 song on Aircheck/Mediabase had 1058 points last week so TGL is probably at least a couple weeks away from charting at Mediabase.

Scotty’s See You Tonight debuted at #59 Billboard with 427k AIs (a gain of 332k). Nice seeing him back on the chart. Another week like this one and SYT will jump 8 spots to #51 Billboard.

Idol-related ads: Arista Nashville devotes 1/3 of its full page ad to Carrie’s SYA, mentioning that SYA is the #1 most added for the 2nd straight week, #34 MB and #30 Billboard, and has sold 65k downloads despite just being released as a single. World Vision has its usual 1/3 page ad in Aircheck and Billboard Country Update featuring a picture of Scotty among 9 acts, also including Gwen Sebastian. Big Machine also took out a full page ad in support of Outnumber Hunger, featuring thumbnail pics of Cassadee Pope and Rae Lynn among 12 acts. There’s also a 1/3 page Big Machine add for Lennon & Maisy’s Ho, Hey talking about its short runtime (1:58), its new stations, and its designation of #1 most viral track of the week on Spotify. Big Machine also took out a front page banner in Aircheck for Lennon & Maisy’s Ho, Hey.

Recommended reading: Billboard leads off with an article asking whether somebody could come along and jumpstart another neo-traditional country movement today like Randy Travis did in the 1980s. Most of the beginning of the article though makes fun of a small demonstration of people who went to the CMA’s offices in Nashville and demanding more attention for traditional country (apparently only a dozen people showed up). The article points out that even traditionally traditional acts like Brad Paisley and George Strait have incorporated pop influences into their production lately. Then it say:

Thus, if a traditional artist should come along that changes the game, it will likely be a more energetic act akin to honky-tonk Merle Haggard than to a balladeer such as Travis, [DigSin CEO & digital era music analyst Jay] Frank suggests.

“When you think about it digitally, the songs that break through, they’re loud, they’re boisterous, they command a significant amount of attention because they command you to have to stop and listen,” Frank suggests.

Despite the protesters’ assertions, labels still stock their rosters with plenty of traditionally influenced acts. Big Machine’s Greg Bates, RCA’s Chris Young, Mercury’s Easton Corbin and Kacey Musgraves, and Broken Bow’s Dustin Lynch are all relative newcomers who’ve had recent hits and whose music leans toward tradition in one way or another.

The article also talks about how younger listeners are working rootsier, bluegrass-influenced music into their playlists, and ends with this quote from Jay Frank:

“If there’s a radio station broadcasting 50,000 watts that plays it all the time and then there’s a TV station that plays nothing but traditional artists 24 hours a day, it ceases to be special,” Frank notes. “Traditional country music might work best as the underdog that is worth fighting for rather than

an ever-present being that is taken for granted.”

Meanwhile Country Aircheck leads with an interview of the new PD at WNSH New York (the new country music station in New York City): John Foxx. John Foxx is ALSO the PD for New York City’s big Hot AC station WPLJ and will maintain both roles. Among other things they talk about the influx of pop PDs into country music stations. John Foxx really emphasizes how much he loves the level of listener engagement among country fans and how much he loves working with country acts because of their accessibility.

One other numbers note: late last week Billboard came out with a Top Tours article based on grosses where Carrie came in at #3. Here’s her blurb:

Scoring a No. 3 Hot Tours ranking is Carrie Underwood with more than $2.9 million in grosses from the continuing world tour that began last summer in support of her Blown Away album, released last May. This week’s reported box office totals come from three Canadian and four U.S. arenas, all with sellout crowds in the house. Since the Blown Away Tour began last year, more than $40.6 million in ticket sales revenue has been reported to Billboard. The overall attendance count is 682,661 from 84 performances.

The North American total within that from Billboard Boxscores is 78 shows, $38,957,809 grossed, and 661,165 tickets sold so the reported totals from Australia and the UK (I don’t think Carrie’s Ireland shows have been reported) are: ~$1.6 million over 6 shows (~$274k grossed per show), and 21,496 tickets sold (an average of 3,583 tickets per show).

windmills: I was wondering what’s happening with Casey’s new single TGL. It seems to me to be rising very slowly for an artist that had 2 top 20 recent hits. Is it due to the single being a bad pick, too soon to tell, 3rd single off an album, or other factors (Ex. push from his label for other artists)?

  • http://www.facebook.com/bweitzel Becky Weitzel

I’m not Windmills but I think it’s in part to a bad choice. I loved his first two but I just can’t get into this song. It’s not a bad song by any means I just don’t think it was the right pick for radio. I’ve actually barely heard it on my local stations and I heard his first two all the time!! I think he’s starting to have the same trouble Scotty had. If you remember his first two singles were top 20 songs too but Water Tower Town I don’t even think cracked the top 40 (maybe even the top 50, can’t remember). While I like WTT, I can admit it wasn’t the greatest choice for radio. I think he shoulda gone with YMTLG (and signs pointed to him doing that at first). Don’t know how well it would of done, but I believe it would if charted higher than SYT. For Casey’s sake I hope things pick up and he can see the top 20 again, he was my fav contestant from that season and I was disappointed when he was voted off.

I think TGL got out of the gates slowly because it went for adds the 1st week Blake’s new single could get adds and then had to face Luke & Hunter getting added by everybody. Those 3 songs plus Carrie getting 121 adds in the past 2 weeks hasn’t left a lot of room for other new songs at a lot of stations.

I’m even seeing Little Big Town’s Your Side Of The Bed not taking off yet which is weird considering how well they’ve been doing lately (they’re #30 on the small market Billboard Indicator chart but at #42 in week 3 on the main Billboard airplay chart). Kacey Musgraves is coming off a t10 hit and has industry heat but she’s moving a little more slowly than I’d like (she made t40 Billboard in 3 weeks but her week 4 AI total is lower than Merry Go Round’s was in week 4). Kacey went for adds the same week as CaseyJ and LBT went for adds the following week.

So, I think the slow starts may have to do with these last couple weeks being an even more brutal time to launch new songs than usual. From that point of view, Scotty’s label holding off SYT’s official adds date until May 6 and giving all these other high profile songs time to soak up all their adds is probably smart. He may still have to face Lady A releasing a new single the same week and Big Machine is going to push hard for Thomas Rhett but it’ll still be better than how it’s been lately.

We’ll see if P2 stays in the top 50 on BB. I think with an appearance on Idol WFTSOTM should make it to 900K fairly easily. I’m not sure about platinum. It all depends on radio and GGG.

Is Phillip scheduled to appear on Idol again?

  • Madilo

if they discount the album or GGG, it’ll boost it for sure

I think he will be singing Gone Gone Gone while a montage clip of the season from the auditions to the final 2 playing in the background.

He’s touring with John Mayer so that will help him boost his sale!

Awe – look at little Kelly
    chuggin away with her ‘Hits. I didn’t think she’d do 200K …

  • TheOther

I think it will at some point. I can’t see Interscope not aiming for that considering that after the next Idol appearance, Worldwide, TWFTSOTM will be very close to 1M. Also, the CD is only 5 mos old and Phillip hasn’t really done a lot of promo lately, instead focusing on his college tour. I agree that the John Mayer tour will be a big deal. Rock of Rio will be huge. I can also see a 3rd single later. It is far from out of the BB200.

At this point, I think her album will be certified Gold by the end of the summer. The tour with Maroon 5 will help her continue to sell her album.

good to see Olly exceed the HDD prediction. I was listening to his album the other day. It’s pretty good

for the first time the TWFTSOTM is out of the itunes top 100, i hope it comes back. His appearance on Idol could not come faster lol

Moving up nicely. This could go top 9 when Kelly’s last single drops down in a few days.
