The big news on the Idol radio front is that Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean have reached number 1 on the Mediabase Country chart. They reached this level on Billboard last week, but due to the differences in how Mediabase calculates positions on the Country chart and maneuvering by other parties, “Don’t You Wanna Stay” took until this week to reach number 1 on Mediabase. Congratulations!

Jennifer Hudson is also having a good week. Her debut single, “Where You At”, from her sophomore album reached top 10 on UAC and top 20 on Urban. Jennifer Lopez and Pittbul hit top 40 on Rhythmic with “On the Floor”. Interestingly, her song is sitting at 35 on both the Pop and Rhythmic charts.

The final milestone goes this week to Glee. No, not their original songs, but to a song that was performed last year that has backed into the top 50 on HAC. Gwyneth’s version of “Forget You” is at 49.

Congrats to Jason/Kelly! They’ll hold on to #1 this week for 3 weeks at Billboard #1 and 2 weeks at Mediabase #1. Next week there’s a possibility of Billy Currington making a run for #1 depending on how this week goes and also Thompson Square.

Thompson Square is new and on a sister label to Jason Aldean so that label will have to decide whether it wants to give Thompson Square its 1st #1 or if it wants Jason to have another week at #1. Jason’s their cash cow but a new act arguably has more to gain from getting #1.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Cool for Jason and Kelly! :) It’s good to see Jason succeed. If his Wiki page is accurate, he’s certainly had a fair amount of disappointment and setbacks leading up to his current success.

  • sr4mjc

Congrats to Jason/Kelly, not a fan of the song, but kudos! Now lets see her new single do that!

  • wellhesback

a numbers question – will there be any word out on number of David Cook albums pre-ordered or boot song downloads, I wonder?

  • windmills

One other thing I just noticed: Thompson Square’s got the new #1 song on i-Tunes country now.

Kristy Lee Cook must be pretty excited seeing the success some of her labelmates are having on radio right now.

  • Eileen99

Congratulations to Jason & Kelly! Love that song! Now we wait to see what kind of crossover appeal it has.

What Are Words will pick up an auto add today from KLLY in Bakersfield (HAC). A few other stations gave test spins last week, will be interesting to see if any HAC or AC PDs decide to pick the song up today. It’s fallen to #104 on iTunes, but I’m not sure if Chris has additional appearances this week. I thought I saw a tweet from him last night that he’d been at Sirius XM.

  • BootStar

Kristy Lee Cook must be pretty excited seeing the success some of her labelmates are having on radio right now.

Wouldn’t it be hilarious if she ended up with a huge hit after being a perennial punching bag in the Idolsphere? I was never a huge fan, but I never got all the hate either.

  • J9BT

Brian Mansfield posted the full IDOL airplay chart from this past week.

“Jennifer Hudson’s Where You At reaches some milestones this week, hitting the top 10 at Urban AC and the top of the Urban chart. It’s also in the Idol airplay top 10 for the first time.

Two songs show up in the Idol airplay for the first time this week — Chris Medina’s What Are Words at No. 89 and Crystal Bowersox’s Mine All Mine at No. 97.”

  • Miss Blue

Jason Aldean’s been booked as a headliner at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI this summer. I’d love to see them book Kelly for an adjacent night and have them do the duet together both nights.

Be a nice forum for Kelly’s new songs as well.

  • Valentin432

DYWS is getting a lot of spins, according to people at Pulse, it reached n°2 all time in terms of spins per station per week. It’s a massive country hit.

  • luly

Congrats to Kelly Clarkson and Jason Aldean!

  • Incipit

will there be any word out on number of David Cook albums pre-ordered or boot song downloads, I wonder?

wellhesbackI don’t expect RCA to part with intel on how many pre-orders and free downloads through the DCO site have occurred since Thursday morning – did they spill hard data on AO about anything sold through that site?

But starting tomorrow morning, the iTunes orders for “Don’t You Forget About Me” will be tracked on the Numbers thread at DCO.

  • tinawina

Congrats to Jason/Kelly! They’ll hold on to #1 this week for 3 weeks at Billboard #1 and 2 weeks at Mediabase #1.

    Dang! Congrats Kelly and Jason!

a numbers question – will there be any word out on number of David Cook albums pre-ordered or boot song downloads, I wonder?

I expect nothing on the pre-orders. Those never get leaked. Honestly, I don’t expect the boot song to sell much of anything… do they ever sell much without radio play? Maybe if it was for charity or something. Its just the boot song, people don’t generally buy that.

  • Joyed

Honestly, I don’t expect the boot song to sell much of anything… do they ever sell much without radio play?

    I was curious too!

Here is a glimpse at how all 6 of the boot songs have done historically in terms of sales:

TOTAL SALES (Week after finale aired. All performed at the end of the season)

S5 1,366,107 Daniel Powter “Bad Day” (+2% increase to 86,825)
    05/30/06
    S6 603,125 Daughtry “Home” (+17% increase to 85,925) 05/29/07
S7 7,000 Ruben Studdard “Celebrate Me Home” 06/29/08
S8 287,846 Carrie Underwood “Home Sweet Home”
    (+184% increase to 32,812) 05/24/09
S9 50,000 Will Young “Leave Right Now” (+704% increase to 30,000)
    06/02/10

FIRST WEEK SALES (Week after first boot song airing. Note: Not all charted)

S5 41,219 Daniel Powter “Bad Day” (This was a 45% increase from previous week’s sales of 28,461 for a total of 156,541)
S6 16,723 Daughtry “Home” (However, with his previous album single sales it came to 69,472 total, percentage increase is unknown; he saw a 54% increase week 2)
S7 UNKNOWN Ruben Studdard “Celebrate Me Home” (Didn’t chart)
S8 112,170 Carrie Underwood “Home Sweet Home”
S9 UNKNOWN Will Young “Leave Right Now” (Didn’t chart)

    Charting for first 2 weeks
S5 Daniel Powter “Bad Day” charted at 9, then 2
S6 Daughtry “Home” charted at 62, then 36
S8 Carrie Underwood “Home Sweet Home”charted at 10, then 40
    S7 & S9 didn’t chart due to low sales

    Charting after finale
S5 Daniel Powter “Bad Day” charted at 2
S6 Daughtry “Home” charted at 5
S8 Carrie Underwood “Home Sweet Home” charted at 49
S9 Will Young “Leave Right Now”charted between 32 and 55 (based on Lee & Crystal)
    S7 & S9 didn’t chart due to low sales

    Notes:
“Bad Day” was released as a single around the time of Idol airing and peaked 05/15/06 on CHR
Daughtry’s song was already on his album, and eventually became his 2nd single, which was revealed in a NYT article posted on 3/22/07, within weeks of it becoming the boot song.
“Bad Day,” “Home,” and “Leave Right Now” were the only boot songs already on albums – therefore fans of the song had the option to go for the entire album rather than just the single.
Ruben’s is a cover of a Kenny Loggins song.
Carrie’s is a cover of Motley Crue song and was a charity single – donations went to the Humane Society

  • Trina

I dont expect much either in the way of downloads on itunes. Its a cover,no charity involved, and many fans pre-ordered the album already.

  • Kirsten

One other note on “Bad Day”, it went on to be the number one single on the Hot100 from Apirl 8-May 6 in 2006. It was the first song to sell 2M in downloads and was the BB Hot 100 song of 2006.

  • Indigobunting

Jason Aldean’s been booked as a headliner at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI this summer.

Chris Young is the second act and Thompson Square the opener. Should be a great show.

Summerfest is the world’s largest outdoor music festival- and the best :)

  • tinawina

Thanks Joyed! So I guess I would expect maybe something along the lines of Ruben’s. Whatever total that had this should have, maybe a little extra because of the new album hype – if they make a big deal of it on air Thursday, perhaps it will make a little bit of noise. Other than that I can’t see it selling much.

  • windmills

An ad on the front page of i-Tunes would probably help too.

I’m all for realistic expectations but David’s in pop/rock and has a pretty good track record of download sales for singles (as opposed to Ruben who’s in Urban AC and never has been big for downloads). The fact that it’s been a while since new David Cook music could work against him but it could also mean pent up demand for his music. Plus AI fans like him, they really really like him. I’m not saying the cover becomes a gold single or anything but Celebrate Me Home-like sales for David’s boot song cover would be a big surprise to me because I expect much bigger 1st week sales than that. I won’t say how high because I don’t want to put out some impossibly high bar so suddenly the sales are a disappointment whatever they are. But I think a David Cook cover will play very well inside the bubble.

  • sr4mjc

So I guess I would expect maybe something along the lines of Ruben’s

I expect much higher than that! If Lee can sell 18k copies of SS his first week from a season not many were interested, Cook should be able to beat that easily. He and S7 were very popular. I also expect an Itunes ad.

As for Aftermath this week, I expect there to be confusion. I wonder if the Acoustic!Live version will get the bump instead of people going to AO to get the remix. I’m not sure I agree with them waiting to put it on itunes. And the huge dvd ad on AO is annoying, unless it’s blocked by your browser.

  • mmb

I expect some nice sales for dyfam. Not omg humongous, but nice. Cook fans have been waiting a long time for new product and I would expect many fans to also spring for the 1.29 iTunes download to show support even if they get the download with their cd preorder. Plus it’s a catchy song and idol seems to be talking it up. ITA that wrt aftermath there will likely just be utter confusion.

  • Chicagolaw

David’s boot song should sell well. He has gotten some good buzz. At the very least, I would think it would give some indication of his fanbase size—the hardcore fans will order off iTunes, even if they already did the album preorder on DCO :)

  • tinawina

Alright windmills, I’ll go with your version of boot song predictions. LOL. I just find it hard to believe anyone cares about these things without the charity incentive (if its not on the radio). I hardly ever notice them myself, so I guess this is an instance of me projecting my boot song feelings on everyone else.

Everything you just said was what I as counting on to kick in for his lead single. But I guess this comes first, so I can see how you may be right.

  • Chicagolaw

I can’t get edit to work. Anyway, I think David should outsell Ruben. DC is enormously popular with AI fans (moreso than Ruben, I think) and fans have been waiting a long time for something new.

In terms of Aftermath, I think there is a ton of potential for confusion. And, while I understand why they are putting it up for sale at AO first, I think they will be missing out by not having the charity version on iTunes after the show.

  • tinawina

I can’t edit anymore and the last few comments keep disappearing. I meant to edit my comment to acknowledge everyone who posted after the windmills comment I was trying to respond to! Anyway, I am taking you guys’ more optimistic view from now on, since it seems I’m the only one who thinks boot songs are meaningless afterthoughts. LOL

  • Chicagolaw

Tinawina, I agree that boot songs are generally, “meaningless afterthoughts,” lol, but they mean a lot in the Idol bubble, and they mean a lot to a fan base. David had/has such a huge AI fanbase that I can’t see the single NOT doing well in sales. (again, nobody is predicting astronomical sales, but they should be significant and certainly higher than Ruben’s)

  • Eileen99

One would think David would sell more than the Ruben boot song, but I also don’t want to set an unrealistic bar. How much did the Jumpin’ Jack Flash single sell? That could gauge pent-up demand for a single but on the other hand, this is a different situation as the boot song will be heard over many weeks unlike JJF or even Let It Be, which was not mentioned again after the show Kris performed it on (plus that was for charity). Basically, I really have no idea, but I’ll download it so there’s one sale.

  • windmills

Eileen99: One would think David would sell more than the Ruben boot song, but I also don’t want to set an unrealistic bar. How much did the Jumpin’ Jack Flash single sell?

That’s a great question. I checked and apparently it didn’t make the digital chart? That surprises me but I’m now remembering how they never announced it’d be on i-Tunes to buy and it didn’t go up until late the next day. But the boot song will be up on i-Tunes 2 days before it get played on AI. But unlike David’s Rolling Stones’s cover it won’t get a live performance.

Maybe tinawina‘s right and it’s going to take original Cook music for him to put up the numbers.

  • Trina

The lack of JJF sales is what’s making me think this won’t sell much (and ITA its original music fans want). At the time when it failed to make the digital chart the big reason given was that it wasn’t announced it would be for sale..but really when did Idol fans ever had to be told?

  • hoosiermama

I’m wondering if Idol will do anything to promote the 10th anniversary cd? Isn’t that coming out soon? I think an ex-Idol performance would tie in nicely to that, but I haven’t heard of anybody scheduled. Thoughts?

  • Joyed

I think the thing to take away from previous boot song numbers is that it can really vary, and that the first week does not tell the entire tale.

Carrie actually sold the most the first week by far, but trails the totals of “Bad Day” and “Home,” for obvious reasons, many of which are radio / original song related. Her first week is just less than a third of her total sales of the song after the finale.

Will Young looks to have sold only 20,000 total before he performed on Idol – then he saw a huge week (comparatively) with 30,000 sales.

In other words, the first week may not necessarily indicate what the final total may be, even if the song doesn’t chart.

(Also, I’m shocked Ruben only sold 7K total – I remember thinking the song didn’t work for montages, but still!)

  • tinawina

At the time when it failed to make the digital chart the big reason given was that it wasn’t announced it would be for sale..but really when did Idol fans ever had to be told?

Oh, I totally think that’s true for the hardcore internet types, but I don’t those are the people that matter in the JJF and now boot song case. Its the people who like someone but don’t stan them. To keep it Idol related, I love Brooke White and have purchased everything she put out, but I don’t even know if she has an operational fansite. I know she did at one time, but I never joined it. And when she performed that Elvis song last year, I didn’t buy that either. It was nice seeing her and I enjoyed it, but that wasn’t a real Brooke song to me, it was a cute thing she did for Idol. I could say the exact same thing for dozens of non-idol artists I love, like Jill Scott, Pink, Arctic Monkeys, Lauryn Hill, Jay Z, etc etc. If one of them popped up doing a cover on, say, Glee, maybe I’d buy it, but then again maybe not. I don’t think I’m particularly unusual either.

Plus, I think the time to expect that kind of hardcore fan buying frenzy for any and everything is in that year immediately coming off idol. After that, people may still like you but they aren’t going to be as invested, save for the diehards.

But I do agree it is probably reasonable to expect more than Ruben – he’s probably more popular with AI viewers now than Ruben was then – but perhaps not as much as what Carrie did, since hers was for charity and she’s… well.. Carrie.

  • sma11ie

I showed my support when I got the song with the preorder. There’s no way this Cook fan is shelling another $1.29 plus tax to get another copy of the SAME COVER just to show support. I mean, pent up demand or not, that just makes no sense to me.

And when she performed that Elvis song last year, I didn’t buy that either.

LOL, did you know they put that up for FREE on iTunes for a bit? That’s how I got it, and I gotta say, I love me some Brooke White but I NEVER listen to that free track.

    Crystal got 1 Add today
    * WRVF-FM Pub 9 AC Toledo 19/Jive/JLG Clear Channel Communications 92 3/7/2011 3:03:00 PM

Crystal got an add (an auto add) today – for Mine All Mine. WRVF (101.5 The River, the Toledo AC station) played it 9 times last week.

I wondered when I saw that MAM made the Idols airplay chart this week. Of course, it’s in her hometown so it’s hard to say if the song has had ANY impact anywhere else, but perhaps this could be a sign of things to come. WRVF has played her a good bit in the past…I didn’t realize they’ve been playing her as much as they have recently though. They played Mine All Mine 9 times in the past week, Holy Toledo 5 times, and Up To The Mountain 6 times. Interesting though…they didn’t play Farmer’s Daughter at all.

Would there be any reason that Jive might sorta use her hometown as a “test market” and encourage them to play what might be her new single to see if her biggest fans – her hometown – like the song, before going for a push nationwide?

  • mozart4898

MJ/Kirsten…I didn’t mean to try to delete my last post either…something screwy happened and I’m not sure if the post is showing up right now or not.

Anyways, checked the Idols airplay link and someone else was obviously playing Mine All Mine because it had 19 spins total. Again, interesting.

  • girlygirl

The station that added Mine All Mine is an AC format one

I looked on the mediabase adds board and it claims that no stations (monitored or unmonitored) besides that Toledo AC station spun Mine All Mine last week. So I don’t know where those other 10 spins are coming from

  • Elliegrll

They added Farmer’s Daughter on January 3rd, but stopped playing it two weeks ago.
