Have a Nice Day? Mine Has Been Insane…

Warning! This post has nothing to do with American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, X Factor, Glee, or any of the shows I cover on this blog.

But I’ve had such an insane day, I feel the need to share. I live on the Boston Marathon route. The runners come right by my house. There was a big marathon party on the top floor of my 5 story building today.  Somehow, party-goers  made their way to the roof to watch the race….

I was sitting at my desk happily blogging away this afternoon when I heard a huge CRASH. I rushed out of my apartment to see a young man, covered in blood, with glass strewn everywhere laying on a landing a few steps below where I was standing.

Suddenly, his friends appeared, completely fearful, panicked and SCREAMING for help. It was total pandemonium.  I rushed back inside to call 911, still with no idea what happened, or why some guy was unconscious and bleeding with glass all around him in the vestibule of my apartment building.

Long story short–the man and his friends were partying on the 5th floor of my building and somehow made their way to the roof to watch the race. Then, somehow, the guy fell through the roof skylight,  tumbling  all the way down a narrow passageway, hitting railings as he fell. Remarkably, he was sort of conscious when the paramedics took him out of the building on a stretcher.

The police swarmed the building, taped off the entrance, warning us not to touch anything. Hours later, it’s still a mess out there. We aren’t permitted to clean it up yet. I live on the 1st floor. If I had been standing outside my door, he would have whizzed by me, landing just a few feet away.

He’s at Mass General Hospital in serious condition right now. I hope he’s not permanently injured.

Meanwhile, it’s been crazy around here all day. The police and paramedics were first to show up. Then the print reporters arrived, followed by the news trucks and a frigging helicopter to shoot the skylight.

PS: I just let a hazmet team in to clean up the blood. They tell me that the investigation is closed. The incident has been ruled an accident.

You deserve a nice adult beverage right about now…..

  • butterbean

So sorry about this, MJ. I’ve been keeping up with you on twitter about all this today.

  • jinger

Wow! So sorry for your stressful day, MJ. I hope that guy is going to be OK.

  • poster

You deserve a nice adult beverage right about now…..

Yes you certainly do, just stay on the first floor whilst drinking it :)

Sounds like a crazy day…I sure hope the guy is okay.

  • tierbee

    Good grief!

  • ellectra

    Oh my goodness. *Hugs*

  • Pam

Whoa! I so am glad I’m not in your shoes mj. I think I’d want to go somewhere and hide. Hope the guy is ok.

  • alison8701

jesus! Do you feel like vomiting? I would probably vomit.

  • ptslittlecomment

I too have been reading your tweets about this and praying for the guy. It looks like must have been standing on top of the skylight when it gave way. None of the sides seem to be broken.
Prayers for you too as well.

  • songsungblue

Jeebus! That would be totally unsettling.

  • sunchick

Holy hell. I hope the guy pulls through, and you get that adult beverage to take the edge off asap.

  • http://emuisemo.pbworks.com eilonwy

Yikes! Yeah, here’s hoping dude recovers. That’s just scary all ’round.

Definitely adult beverages for you, while staying low to the ground.

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ Zsus

Oh my gosh! I hope the guy ends up being okay. But, you take care of yourself, too, MJ. That’s a horrible shock to you to witness something like that. Treat yourself well tonight! (Adult beverage might be the best medicine!)

  • CindyM

Wow! So sorry about all that! Have a good cape cod to unwind (my favorite drink, but appropo for that area :) )

  • Pam

After seeing your videos, I’m surprised the guy managed to survive considering how far he fell! That is bizarre how it all happened.

  • sagi

Wow! I feel for you, I can’t even imagine what it would do to me to open my door and see something like that! :( I am shaking just thinking about it. Sure hope the guy escaped disabling head or spinal injuries and turns out okay. Time for miracles. :cries:

  • Mel1

Wow, mj. I thought one of the runners got injured. I hope that guy is OK.

The last marathon I ran was in Chicago. Thousands of people completed it, but many thousands had to stop because they cancelled it half way through. I was one of the latter. After training, making the trip, and not being able to finish, it took something out of me. I hadn’t had the desire to sign up for another one. (Not that I would ever qualify for the Boston Marathon.)

  • kathrynTX

Oh geez! I hope he will be OK. And his friends. And YOU, mj! You might find yourself reacting later. So take care, try not to freak out if you suddenly feel panicked or start crying, could be your reaction to all this. Ugh. Best wishes to everyone, esp the injured man.

  • butterbean

How weird. Why would they cancel a marathon while it was going on?

    Horrible.

About 10 days ago fire started in a house 100-200m from my home. I was in my room, studying and then I heard fire engines coming towards us, from another village. Usually our firemen drive past our house the other way, but this time the others were coming. So I got up and stepped on the balcony to see the road. As soon as I opened the door, I smelled fire. So I went downstairs and told my parents that something is burning near us.

Then I opened the door and saw smoke, butI couldn’t see the house that was burning. Later we found out that the burning house was two houses, really small forest and small field away. It’s was awful to see the walls of the side that was burning. Fire went from the basement to the roof. They fixed the roof the very next day and it looks like everything will be fine. The house is only a few years old.

  • hapfish

OMG, I used to live right on the Marathon route in Brookline. (Now I live in more sedate Newton). That was one crazy story on the news this evening!

Hope you don’t have to live with a hole in the roof for too long since rain’s a-coming!

    Great race though!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Wow! What a strange accident! Hope that the guy will be OK. A pretty big shock for you too. Take care, MJ!

  • heidijoy

MJ, How traumatic for you and good for you for responding so fast and calling 911. I hope he will be ok. I’m sure his friends are really freaked out.
Be sure you talk it out with someone as PTSD can follow.
Good for you posting it and getting out your reaction.

  • HappyDaisy

So sorry! Saw your tweets about this earlier, MJ. The videos you posted really show what happened. My gosh what a weird accident.

Hoping for the best for the young man.

So glad that you are OK. What a stressful experience for you. Be good to yourself. Tomorrow is a new day….

  • carolinacharms

MJ, Kudos to you for your cool head and quick actions. I surely do hope that the victim will make a speedy and full recovery.

  • tinawina

Whoa. I hope you were not too traumatized. I know I would be! Get out of the house and have a good friend take you somewhere for some good (distracting) times!

  • spirit62

what a horrible thing to see, prayers to the injured man, and prayers, hugs, and a good stiff drink to you Mj.

  • anemicandholding

You’ve got a hell of a lot of nerve trying to profit off of someone’s misfortune this way. Did it ever occur to you that not everything revolves around YOU and your five minutes of fame?

Disgusting. Really disgusting. You are not the freaking victim here.

  • Dlynne

This is so sad. I hope he’s ok. Five stories is a long way to fall. It’s got to be traumatic for you, too. Take care.

  • PamReid

It is exactly because of days like you have had today with that horrible accident that make us appreciate the fantasy and entertainment value of AI and Glee. At least that is true for me. My husband doesn’t get it – why do I spend time trying to figure out what they should sing on Idol when I have NO control and NO idea what the songlist is? Why I do await these programs so eagerly every week instead of watching (as he does) MSNBC and CNN? I need to get away from tragedy and the miserable state of the nation once in awhile. Thank God for the entertainment programs!

The 14 month old granddaughter of my friend and neighbor died suddenly last week. I am heartbroken for that family, and am grateful that there are things like these programs to take my mind off of the tragedy for a little while.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

Geez, mj! Didn’t you first think he crashed his car into your building? This is crazy. The guy hitting the landings/railings on the way down probably hurt like hell but slowed him down some which could very well be the reason the dude’s still alive.

  • Fettes

Thanks for sharing MJ — I rarely post but really, anemicandholding, what is your problem? How exactly is MJ profiting? I checked in to read the best AI blog there is and now I will send my prayers to the injured man and hope that MJ is holding up ok.

  • jersey

Gosh, MJ, I hope the guy is ok. How horrible. I know I would be completely shaken.

  • glamertitis

I appreciate you sharing this experience with us, your readers MJ. Sometimes there is news to share and it isn’t always about a reality show in my opinion…

  • Duke

OMG MJ! I JUST SAW THIS ON THE LOCAL NEWS! thats insane! small world! hope that kids ok

  • larc

Sorry you had to go through that, MJ. I hope you are able to get a good night’s sleep and that tomorrow will be much better.

  • karenc

    Wow, that’s awful !!! Hope he’s ok.

  • GreenHippo

Oh wow, what an experience. I would have been totally freaked out. I also followed your tweets and I was thinking she has a cool head, if she can tweet this calm :)
My prayers to this young man hoping for a speedy recovery.
On a side note, we all know now where you live….hehehe

  • TexasWannaHoldEm

So sorry for the victim, his friends and bystanders like you, MJ. I know scenes like this can be so traumatizing. My 20-year old nephew witnessed a man put a gun to his head and pull the trigger in a home improvement store parking lot this summer. My nephew was the first to reach the man, call for help, etc. The man died. It was really tough for my nephew to work through that experience. My prayers go out to everyone involved in your experience today.

  • cher

OMG MJ! Your own real life reality show! I would have freaked! I really hope you don’t have nightmares tonight and that the young man fully recovers.

  • standtotheright

Wow. I hope that guy makes a full recovery. How awful.

  • bentley1530

Good thing no one was walking through when he fell or there could have been more injuries. I hope he has a full recovery.

  • TwigLA

What an experience. I really hope that kid comes out of this ok. Just imagine if someone had walked in just as that was happening. We might be reading about 2 tragedies.

You and the other neighbors must be shaken as are his friends. Take it easy and be good to yourself.

  • wolfsbane813

um it is her blog. she has a right to share some of her personal life stories. god forbid it isn’t a post about song spoilers, glee, or billboard records.

and even though she wasn’t the person who fell, she was still there and experienced it. she is an indirect victim, but a victim nonetheless. sharing the story is one way of dealing with the experience. so how about you not be so angry/disgusted/rude and just be glad that the guy isn’t dead and that mj isn’t more than a little shaken up.

    Anemicandholding..

In no way, shape, or form do I think MJ has posted this to “benefit” or “profit”….?
What an odd thing to say.
When something crazy happens to me, I need to talk about it and get my feelings out too. If that was you I don’t think you’d just keep it to yourself.
Anyway, hope that guy makes a full recovery…
Thanks for always providing me with hours of blog reading MJ!

I’m glad you were able to make the 911 call so quickly. Wow, what an experience. I agree with the others, take care of yourself mj and process this however you need to. I think having a blog is good therapy. :D A good stiff drink can be too!

My prayers are with this young man.

  • TwigLA

Anemic, maybe you don’t realize this, but MJ is merely sharing a piece of her life with friends here on *her* blog. Something tragic happened that directly affects her and writing about this is therapeutic.

I think it is unseemly to accuse her of trying to capitalize on it.

  • Inconnu

Oh gosh, I hope the guy is ok. This is awful.

  • abbysee

Wow, just seeing this now….. MJ, how awful this is. I hope the dude is gonna be okay, and I hope you weren’t disturbed too much by this. Seeing carnage at your footsteps can be rather traumatic.

ETA: For many years I lived along the NYC marathon route, and I’ve seen many thing, but never this!

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/luvadamlamberts-american-idol-tour-2009-washington-dc-re-cap.htm luvadamlambert

Damnn mj that’s awful!!! I’m soo sorry and I hope you’re feeling okay!!! (hugssss)

  • sherimoonzombie

Holy cow, I always assumed that sky lights were made out of some kind of safety glass. Those are some nasty big shards of glass.

MJ – Is your roof one that folks are supposed to be able to go out on? Or were they in an area no one is supposed to be able to get to?

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

MJ – Is your roof one that folks are supposed to be able to go out on? Or were they in an area no one is supposed to be able to get to?

People are not supposed to be up there, no. It’s not a roof-deck.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Wow, MJ. How frightening. I hope the dude is okay and that you aren’t too shaken up by it. :(

  • sherimoonzombie

People are not supposed to be up there, no. It’s not a roof-deck.

Ahh, that explains why they didn’t bother with safety glass or a railing around that thing. Kind of like the problem we have out here with ‘out of bounds’ skiers/boarders. Folks get hurt.

  • MollyAnnMay

Good lord, MJ I’m glad you weren’t standing in that stairwell when that happened. Must have sounded like an earthquake. I hope the guy pulls through…

  • jessabean

he’s lucky you were home to call 911 so fast. wow!

  • IdolThoughts

So sorry MJ…that sounds really scary.

As far as I know, one needs revenue first to derive a profit. Exactly how will revenue be earned with a headline of “Have a Nice Day?…..”

I have never been involved with a situation exactly like this (thank God), but I have experienced 1st hand situations involving peril, and they are quite unnerving. I can only imagine the feeling of seeing someone in such danger outside of my front door, and I don’t think the feeling would be pleasant.

    Hang in there, MJ!

  • Nina1

I’m so sorry, Mj. I heard this story a few times on the news today. Some things are best not to be experienced first hand; I’m sure you must have been shaken. I hope the story ends well, with the faller okay and you returning to blissful calm.

  • Mtlfan

    what a story mj!
That so unpleasant to see something like that happens real close like you were!
I hope this young man’s condition is not too serious

  • milwlovesadam

Wow, MJ how scary. Hoping he’s OK.

  • Lulu2

What a disturbing day for you, mj. And how awful for the person that fell. I hope he will recover as well.

  • jessabean

I just caught this tweet from Denis Leary and thought it might cheer you up … or at least make you laugh (given all your years of dealing with the Boston Marathon):

“@denisleary: Kenyan wins Boston Marathon. That’s also next year’s headline.”

  • hoosiermama

I’m so sorry this happened right outside your door, MJ. So scary! Hope your nerves have recovered and that he’s ok.

  • Shadow_i

That’s awful. Its like a scene out of a movie falling through a skylight, glass and crashing down rails and floors. That’s scary. He’s lucky he was conscious and still alive.

  • Indigobunting

    Holy Cow!

Real life is stranger than fiction.

It is people like you that need to be banished from the surface of this Earth. How dare you make this nasty comment? You are pathetic and so disgusting.

May God save you from Hell!!!

  • bean99

That’s horrible, Mj. I hope the guy will be okay.

  • Kirsten

What a scary thing to have happen for all involved (including MJ). MJ, it’s a good thing that you kept your head and got help. Hopefully, the guy will be okay.

When you need a hazmet team to clean up someone else’s blood right outside your apartment, you have been victimized/traumatized by a violent accident!

And further more, this is her freakin’ blog and she can discuss whatever the hell she wants to on here, so back off!!!!!

  • http://MJO judes

MJ my thoughts & prayers are with both you & the man who was injured. Hopefully you can talk about this with your neighbours -to help you come to terms with this traumatic experience.

  • Truthiness

How horrible for that guy, and how scary for everyone involved. I hope he recovers.

  • asifclueless

    Oh Dear! MJ.

Hope you feel alright now. What a traumatic experience!!!
    It’s so scary.
Fortunately, you were there and on your feet to get help and call 911.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the guy. Hope he has a fast recovery.

And MJ, take a double shots and shake this horror experience out of your head.
You’ve done your part to help him.

    Thanks!!!
