TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Feb. 23, 2012) – ole is pleased to announce it has signed a worldwide publishing deal with songwriter and 19 Recordings/Interscope recording artist, Haley Reinhart.

“We are very excited that Haley chose to sign with ole,” says Michael McCarty, ole President. “In addition to the gifted voice and million-watt charisma evident on American Idol, she can really write songs and has the soul and vision of a true artist.”

Haley Reinhart adds, “I am so delighted to be a part of the ole publishing family. They see me for the true artist I’ve always aspired to be. They’ve welcomed me with open arms and I can already tell this will be a long-lasting and successful affair.”

Haley’s time on Idol brought wide attention and praise from a number of notable musicians and celebrities including Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres, among others. Music legends Robert Plant and Jimmy Page paid her the ultimate compliment by approving her to perform the Led Zeppelin song, “What Is and What Should Never Be,” for Top Three week.

Haley’s rendition of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” quickly established her as a fan favorite. That acclaim led fans to search for more and the reaction to her postings on YouTube has been nothing short of spectacular. Haley is the only Season 10 contestant to generate over one million views on four of her performance videos. Haley also teamed up with fellow Idol alum, Casey Abrams, on a jazzy ensemble of the Holiday classic “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. The single and video both debuted in the iTunes Top 10.

Haley’s first single from her upcoming debut album will launch this March.

    Congrats to Haley!!

Just curious…what are the advantages of signing with a publishing company as opposed to starting your own (e.g., Brad Paisley did so very early on…)?  Thanks…

Great opportunity.  Its not the glamorous side of the business but song writers can make a really good living and have long careers.  Audiences tend to fall in and out of love with pop stars e.g. we all love Adele, but she’s going to need to take a year or two break because we are all going to be Rolling in the Deep to death that song has been played so much.  Its happening now to Taylor Swift some people are starting to complain more than cheer and Whitney wrote that happened to her as well – too much I.I..I.I… Will Always Love You.

    Love that press release!

Can’t wait to see all that she’s capable of as a songwriter. “Wasted Tears”(Or is it “Wasting Tears”? I’ve seen both names used so I’m still not sure. lol)is a great start.

A music publisher (or publishing company) is responsible for ensuring songwriters receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. Through a publishing contract, a songwriter “assigns” the copyright  of their composition to a publishing company. In return, the company licenses compositions, helps monitor where compositions are used, collects royalties and distributes them to the composers. They also secure commissions for music and promote existing compositions to recording artists, film and television.

A music publisher (or publishing company) also ensures that another entity gets a piece of the pie. ;)

  • Anonymous

True,  but it makes the pie a lot bigger than what an artist would get without the help… or tried to handle writing all the letters and contracts ,  fielding phone calls, and monitoring if anyone was illegally using the content themselves.

Like it or not,  few businesses in this day and age don’t require the services of other businesses.  Even basic businesses like building contractors hire subcontractors like plumbers or electricians.

Stil,  : )  my gut impression was the same as yours even if my rational mind tells me otherwise.

Forbes has a cover story that says Kathy Ireland is worth $350 million because of licensing deals. I know Haley’s deal is for her music, but it gives you some idea of the potential for a celebrity who plays their cards right.

“That $2 billion at retail (for comparison, Martha Stewart sells about $900 million at retail, based on industry estimates) translated into about $850 million in wholesale sales last year, of which Ireland got a royalty payment of roughly 6%. That’s around $50 million in revenue for Ireland’s company, and with a meager staff of 42—the beauty of licensing, of course, is that everyone else has to actually make and sell the stuff—the vast majority of that is pure profit, flowing straight into pockets of Kathy Ireland Worldwide’s photogenic 100% owner.”
