Haley Reinhart on Her Record Deal "I'll Probably Have to Fight My Way In"

Haley Reinhart is a fighter! She’s thrilled to be signed to Interscope records, but she plans to fight the powers that be for her vision if she has to.

In this Idols Live backstage interview from the RBC Center in Raleigh NC today, Haley says, “I’m not trying to rush everything just to get something out. I’d rather make something right…I want it to be something I’m really proud of and that defines me. I’ll probably have to fight my way in, and really just stress ‘this is the direction I want to go’ because I know it’s not the general pop style…I don’t think any of the fanbase would expect me to come out with something like that. It should be really interesting.”

Go Haley go. Season 9 runner up, Crystal Bowersox won many of her battles with Jive last year–releasing the single she preferred, recording songs she’d written without fancy co-writes–but it remains to be seen if she’ll record another album on Sony.

Let’s see how Haley fares in her battles with Interscope. It should be interesting, indeed!

    She’s definitely a little firecracker.

  • St.Lucia

Good luck with that Haley. It hasn’t exactly worked too well for any of the people before her…

I’m intrigued to hear what she does put out though.

  • McCreerian

Another Crystal. I admire artists who aren’t willing to sell themselves out. So it sounds like to me she hasn’t even recorded yet and her album will probably be released around springtime-which is good because we already have enough idols crowding up the fall releases as it is-including 3 from this year(assuming Pia’s will be released in the fall).

  • panz

Good for Haley. I hope she can continue to stick to her principles.

A spring release sounds good to me.

  • chessguy99

Looking at the Interscope line up, it is a bit of a mixed bag. IDT Interscope is so concerned with putting out a pop artist, than they are having an artist be successful in the type of music they want to produce.

  • Buffynut

Haley is so cute but how tall is that woman interviewing her! Holy Cow!

I was thinking the same thing – I was thinking maybe Haley was on a “lower” platform or something. Either that or the interviewer is about 6’2″ or so!

A label like Interscope doesn’t just sign any musical act that knocks on their door. I am assuming they already had an idea of where Haley wanted to go before inking her. But I am glad Haley is willing to fight for what she believes in; most artists should do that, and I think they probably do. At the end of the day, there always will need to be compromise.

I think the interviewer is 5’9″ making Haley 4’6″. I also like it that I am not the only Dad who is a fan. Makes me feel less creeperish. :)

  • Pam

Yep, that interviewer is a tall drink of water that’s for sure!

As far as Haley goes pertaining to picking her battles with the label, while it doesn’t always work out well for everyone, at least Jimmy knows what kind of artist that Haley is. She won’t win all of her battles and there will be some compromise but hopefully most of her vision will be on the album.

  • sr4mjc

Go Haley! I hope she makes something she’s really happy with while also making something that is marketable. I think you can do both.

  • sylvanaire

Yay, Haley! Hoping the necessary compromises will lean in Haley’s favor. Am happy to patiently wait for music from Haley. It’s important to get it right. No sense in releasing generic songs that anybody could have sung. She should be proud of her work. That way, even if it doesn’t sell, she’ll have the satisfaction of doing her best work. Ah well, what will be, will be. We’ll just have to wait and see what results from this deal. Still, the possibilities are exciting!

I hope Haley uses Carrie, not Crystal or Kelly, as an example of how to correctly fight for what she wants. Carrie doesn’t publicly hash out her issues with her label, but she remains strong and clear about what she wants. She’s a great example that someone can be respectful, but still be determined, fight for what they want, and be a good businesswoman. Whatever happens, I hope Haley avoids going on a passive aggressive twitter rant, or embarrassing her A&R person in public, or publicly dissing anyone from the label who is working on her album.

Very true, the Carrie route of fighting is the best.

  • Jamcracker

This approach is how you avoid a “This Time.” Good on her for knowing what she wants and having the balls to go for it.

ITA and that she keeps her family/friends at bay too. Its just as bad when those close to an Idol start spouting off on twitter. Casts a small bit of a negative shadow even if one doesn’t have control over their idiot family members.

  • Tera2

She said before her heart is in jazz, and that’s what she’s most passionate about. Yeah, she should fight them to put out a jazzy CD.

Haley can’t be taller than 5ft. That girl looks like a giant next to her – making her look like one of the little people

  • mada23

Whatever happens, I hope Haley avoids going on a passive aggressive twitter rant, or embarrassing her A&R person in public, or publicly dissing anyone from the label who is working on her album.

Definitely not going to happen, since she rarely talks about anything on twitter lol

Oh, and if you want to see how tall that woman is, look at her video with Scotty lol, she’s a giant

Yeah, she should fight them to put out a jazzy CD.

Don’t remember ever hearing her say that she wants to do jazz specifically. But she has said that she wants to incorporate some kind of jazz into whatever she does

  • sr4mjc

Haley hardly ever tweets, I can’t see a rant coming any time soon, lol.

  • MBane

She has stated that she is angling for funky blues/soul in her latest interview with Lyndsey Parker. Previously, she included rock and suggested that she would like to find some way to incorporate jazz. (not so coincidentally, Led Zeppelin generally fits the above description, without the jazz).

On the heels of Adele’s meteoric success I don’t see reaching a workable compromise with Interscope as an insurmountable hurdle. Jimmy knew exactly what he was getting.

On the heals of Adele’s meteoric success I don’t see reaching a workable compromise with Interscope as an insurmountable hurdle. Jimmy knew exactly what he was getting.

Adele is on her second album, and didn’t see a meteoric rise with the first one. I don’t see Haley releasing an Adele type of album, because even though HAC and pop stations have played Rolling In the Deep, they won’t be as open to playing any of the other songs on her album. Adele’s home format is mainly Triple A, that’s where she found her success, and where she became a critical darling, but as we saw with Crystal, that format is not going to play anyone who appeared on American Idol.

  • adolf_hipster

She’s so laid back and likable. I FLOVE her!

Adele just paved the way. Haley will likely have to lean more heavily towards current pop than Adele.

  • McCreerian

This makes me also wonder-Is Haley planning on moving to Los Angeles after the tour is over? Or does she want to settle back in Chicago?

  • SajiNoKami

    hope it all goes well.

  • girlygirl

well, in my opinion, Haley’s basic style is more mainstream than Crystal — there are other bluesy/jazzy/pop types who have done well in the past few years — so I don’t see Haley having as much trouble as Crystal in finding a radio format that will play her music.

Interscope will probably give Haley only so much say. I think one reason Crystal was able to do her album her way is that Jive might not have been expecting much in the way of commercial success. Interscope might be thinking Haley could be a big success in the mainstream pop market — if they do think that, that are unlikely to let Haley have free rein. So Haley will likely have to pick and choose her battles, rather than feel like she can get whatever she wants.

  • sr4mjc

Adele is on her second album, and didn’t see a meteoric rise with the first one.

She did win best new artist Grammy with the first one, so it’s not like she came out of nowhere with album two though.

But I do think Adele’s second album is more pop than 19 was, which was definitely more jazzy. I could see Haley going either or those routes. Do I expect something like BNA for Haley? well likely not, but I’m happy she’s signed. I’ll just wait patiently and hope Interscope finds a good fit for her.

  • girlygirl

    MBane

Have to disagree with you. Pop and Hot AC stations are more than happy to play Adele’s other songs. Her next single, Someone Like You, has already cracked Top 40 on Hot AC (currently #38) and is moving very steadily up the mediabase CHR chart

    (Wednesday’s HAC Mediabase chart)
    40 47 38 ADELE Someone Like You XL/Columbia 2011 412 190 222

    (Tuesday’s CHR chart)
    80 66 ADELE Someone Like You 161 85 76 1.364

Now, Adele is a Grammy winning artist who has sold more than 2 million copies of her current album, so radio stations are naturally going to be more open to playing her music than they are to playing the music of some newbie who finished 3rd on Idol. But still, it can be seen as a good sign for Haley that Hot AC and Pop radio have been supporting Adele’s music.

  • tibitibis

Yeah, i would don’t like to see something like that, but tbh i don’t think she’s gonna do that either, i’m confident she will win some of that battles, not all ;| ,since she is really a newbie in the business, but i hope the most important ones will work for her and her fans, finger cross for a good single and album.

And she looks adorable in the video and so tiny , boy!! that woman is really really tall lol.

  • tomk

This makes me also wonder-Is Haley planning on moving to Los Angeles after the tour is over? Or does she want to settle back in Chicago?

Her best friend from Idol (Julie Zorilla) has stated on Twitter that Haley is moving to LA.

ITA and that she keeps her family/friends at bay too. Its just as bad when those close to an Idol start spouting off on twitter. Casts a small bit of a negative shadow even if one doesn’t have control over their idiot family members.

This should be very easy for Haley. She doesn’t tweet much, and when she does, it is a very casual/laid back type of chatter she does.
Her family has talked a few times (single on finale was first “leaked” by them, I believe) – but they are a family of musicians, and I just don’t see them doing something stupid like criticizing the label or Haley’s team. I think everything Haley fights for will be behind closed doors. Even with all of the rumors about her signing with Interscope, we never heard one thing from Haley’s camp. We never even heard that Haley was meeting with anyone, etc. We have no guarantees that she’ll stay this way, but for now, she seems like a very “closed door” type of girl when it comes to this stuff.

  • tomk

I hate to even bring up Adele when it comes to Haley…because although she is red-hot right now, it’s going to be nearly impossible to emulate her success. I think back to the mid-90s when you had people like Meredith Brooks trying to hit the mainstream riding the coattails of Alanis. It got her a hit song, but that was pretty much the end of the gig. Nobody wants a copy of the original – they want the original :)

So I just want her to do her thing – if it is jazzy, fine. If it is bluesy, sultry, rock girl that is fine (And I think she can pull this off). I don’t want her being mainstream “pop”, but then again mainstream pop includes names like Pink, Colbie Colait, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Perri, and of course Adele herself. So it’s not like it is all Ke$ha :)

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Good for Haley. I imagine, as mentioned by others, some compromise will be necessary. That said, I think she’s smart to push for the vibe she wants and what clearly made her popular on the show. I hope it turns out good. I just love her voice.

  • Elliegrll

I don’t see Adele’s new single taking hold at CHR, especially, and HAC like her first one did. But, more to the point, I don’t think that Haley will release an album that is in the same style or has a similar sound to Adele’s.

  • chrislongisland

I love Haley sticking to her guns. Jimmy also loves her so I hope that helps her on her path.

  • wonderings

I’m very excited to see Haley officially officially signed and with a great mindset about her upcoming work.

I love that she’s not in some mad rush to record whatever’s sittin’ on the shelf at Interscope, has a good feel as to what she wants to sound like, and knows she might have to show some backbone to get it there. But I think Jimmy knows this about her as well. Here’s hoping they find some cool writers & producers that Haley feels comfortable jamming and collaborating with….

  • marco5ny

I think most artists have to feel comfortable with whatever they are recording to have any measure of success. Hopefully any discussion of “fighting” is premature.

I haven’t heard any of Haley’s music so I’m not sure I understand the link between what Adele is doing and what Haley might do. Adele’s critical and commercial success is tied to her original music. Of course you never know what sort of songwriting talent some Idols have in them until the album comes out. For me, Kellie Pickler is a prime example of surprising potential.

Re: Haley’s height–I see that IMDB lists it as 5′ 2″. Don’t know the accuracy of that, though. Lauren is listed as 5′ 6″ and Stefano as 5′ 2-1/2″.

  • cowboysfan

Ho hum. Like Crystal, she’ll make a big fuss about being an “indie” artist, then turn around and release a forgettable record that goes absolutely nowhere.

  • tomk

Re: Haley’s height–I see that IMDB lists it as 5? 2?. Don’t know the accuracy of that, though. Lauren is listed as 5? 6? and Stefano as 5? 2-1/2?.

Pia is listed at 5’5″ (no idea how accurate that is) – and in videos where she is standing next to Haley, she has a good few inches on her. So Haley can easily be 5’2″…if Pia is 5’5″ :)

  • jonnyk

I don’t know her ability to write songs and if her talent is huge enough to win them over to get what she wants. But a good mindset. Go for it.

  • Ringo

    Stefano as 5? 2-1/2?

Yep, that’s what he is listed at. That female interviewer could wear him like a corsage!!!

  • tomk

I don’t know her ability to write songs and if her talent is huge enough to win them over to get what she wants. But a good mindset. Go for it.

One thing about the idols is that we have no idea how good they are at writing, or if they write at all. Haley has stated that she does indeed write and writes a lot of slam poetry (a performance arts type of poetry, if I understand it correctly). Hopefully Interscope will help her develop that skill….and perhaps (like Lauren) she’ll be able to get a co-write on her album.

At the end of the day, I go back to the fact that I don’t see how Interscope would sign any artist without having some idea on what they want to do. For example, if they go to Haley and say “We want you to be a pop princess!” and she says “No way!”…they probably don’t sign her. So some of this stuff has to already be hashed out – how can it not be? Haley won’t get her way 100%. The label, though they write the checks, will also compromise a bit…and they’ll meet somewhere in between.

  • springboard

Crystal Bowersox won many of her battles with Jive last year–releasing the single she preferred, recording songs she’d written without fancy co-writes–but it remains to be seen if she’ll record another album on Sony.

Crystal apparently won her battles, and as a result she got null support from the label where it counts: radio. I am really hoping that Haley won’t go down this route!!!!

  • chrislongisland

Crystal’s album is amazing, radio or no radio.

Not rrly a smart thing to say right after she gets signed :P

  • LoveDaRocker

Cool! A Haley interview. Let me click on “play.”

    -click-

Holy amazon goddess! Who’s that WOMAN? Makes Haley look like an 11 year-old. Nice deep voice and friendly. I can’t stop looking at her.

    So, was Haley signed?

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Haley has stated that she does indeed write and writes a lot of slam poetry (a performance arts type of poetry, if I understand it correctly).

Really? That’s interesting. Poetry slams started in Chicago in the 80s. They were pretty big in Chicago when I first moved there in the early 90s. I used to go to the Green Mill for their shows. The performances were usually very thought provoking and I enjoyed the element of competition. Most of the shows I attended featured very rhythmic slant rhymes. Don’t know if Haley is any good at it, but I think the interest bodes well for her at least lyrically.

  • tinawina

    Yay for Haley!!!! How exciting.

Yeah, I agree! Crystal is very much a folk artist leaning towards Americana, most people in her niche don’t sell a lot. But lately, there have been a good amount of people singing modernized jazz, blues or soul that have been able to make a career out of it. So I think the possibilities are there for Haley. :)

  • Landmd

Good luck Haley!! Since Interscope has worked with her during the season I’m sure they know she is a fighter!
I would not worry too much about the fighting for what she wants will be public, as she uses the social media very rarely.

  • allstar

Haley is used to fighting. She fought the unprecedented high level of s10 producer manipulation and scraped to the top 3. Now, round 2.

  • randomjoe

Good persona for Haley: Scrappy little fighter or as her dad says, a pistol.

  • LaleyFan

Stupid thing to say publicly Haley. Not to mention, you are NEW in the biz and have to pretty much let them have their way with you or you’ll go nowhere. Wait til you sell a few million albums before you start talking about getting your way.

  • JerryT

Stupid is a harsh word to describe someones intentions.Haley has a dream and she is fighting to live that dream, she accepts advise and works to improve herself with every performance.Haley has always said she has a goal and in order to reach her goal she knows when to compromise. many successful people,in any career, has to be a little stubborn to reach their goals,It doesn’t pay to settle for just anything.

  • Miguel

Lyndsey Parker of Yahoo! Music first broke news of Haley signing. Just days before that she asked Haley if she was signed and if she was, what would she like her first album to be like.

She denied being signed but responded to the question of the album with this:

“I would love, in a perfect world, I would love to have it be bluesy, (???), soulful, funky, you know, a lot of stuff incorporated. I think it’s possible.” (smiles)

To which Lyndsey said she thought it was probable.

I think at this point Haley had already made clear to the label what she wanted to do. I think any fights will be over the timing and actual song choices rather than the genre.
