A thread to discuss who is submitted where, what their odds are and who was left out (and “that was a really odd choice”). We’ll be collecting submissions in the main post. The lists are long, so this will take some time. Submissions will start appearing after the jump.

If I miss a name, please let us know and we’ll update. Only human and all that. Apologies in advance.

Best New Artist–realistically only Jordin has a shot, and it’s probably a long shot given this is the year of Katy Perry, Leona Lewis, OneRepublic and other more buzzed about singers. Not sure about the Jonas Brothers. On the one hand, the Academy has nominated “teen bands” before. Or, rather, a teen band–Hanson got the nod back in ’98, but the Jonas Brothers are a bit like a poor-teenie’s Hanson. lol.

Then again, Jordin has managed 3 top 5 CHR songs this year. But the fact that her biggest hit, “No Air,” was a duet may hurt her when it comes time for Academy voters to mark their choices for nominations. They may attribute the song’s success primarily to Chris Brown and, while I think she did the heavy lifting on that song, it’s true that his name helped to carry it further than it might have otherwise gone.

Blake? Uh, no. Ace? Good on him for being submitted, but I don’t think he’s on the radar.

For some reason Carrie’s label submitted All American Girl and Last Name instead of what would almost positively have gotten her a 3rd consecutive win in the Best Female Country Vocal Performance category: Just A Dream. On the bright side this makes it more likely Miranda Lambert will win her first Grammy in that category, for Gunpowder & Lead.

Here are all the Idol Country submissions:

    Best Female Country Vocal Performance
15 Minutes Of Shame, Kristy Lee Cook
Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful, Kellie Pickler
    All American Girl, Carrie Underwood
    Last Name, Carrie Underwood

    Best Male Country Vocal Performance
    I’ll Walk, Bucky Covington
    We Weren’t Crazy, Josh Gracin

I don’t see anything submitted for Phil Stacey.

    Best Country Song (writer award)
All American Girl (Ashley Gorley, Kelley Lovelace, Carrie Underwood)
Last Name (Luke Laird, Hillary Lindsey, Carrie Underwood)
We Weren’t Crazy (Josh Gracin, Tony Lopacinski, Bobby Pinson)

Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful, 15 Minutes Of Shame, and I’ll Walk were also submitted in this category.

    Best Country Album
    Why Wait, Kristy Lee Cook
    We Weren’t Crazy, Josh Gracin
    Kellie Pickler, Kellie Pickler
    Carnival Ride, Carrie Underwood

How about a category for Best County Album Produced in 72 Hours Or Less?

How about a category for Best County Album Produced in 72 Hours Or Less?

    KLC would be a shoe-in.

LOL. Poor Kristy Lee. Her submission is a little “WTF?!” because her label seems intent on just throwing her to the wolves and hoping she survives.

Carrie’s the only one with a decent shot at a nomination in the Country categories. Way outside shot for Kellie.

  • soundscene

Can small acts submit nominations as well?

Labels (big and small) can submit their artists for nomination, and Academy members can submit as well. The various submission lists contain a lot of artists that you’ve probably never heard of.

I’m new. I have no idea what’s a criteria. For example, New Artist means someone who release albums in 2008? Have to sell at least gold? Please give me some idea. Thanks in advance~

  • itsalleternal

New artist = first album in the eligibility period (from October 2007 to September 2008 I believe). Kristy Lee Cook WOULD be eligible, but David Cook and David Archuleta (and others) I believe have to wait a year.

Yeah, which is why Jordin is submitted for this year and not last year.

  • soundscene

Rock Categories–Daughtry’s “What About Now” is a long shot. It seems a little like a throwaway single from an album that has squeezed itself dry with potential singles. There’s simply not enough buzz around the song for it to register.

Ony one with a real chance: Carrie in any category she picks. Carnival Ride is an excellent follow up album.

Someone who might have a shot: Bucky Covington

One I would like to see get a shot at a Grammy or other award: Josh Gracin

And as much as I hate to say this, because Chris Sligh was certainly not my favorite of Season 6, I heard his latest release on the radio and really like it. He sounds great and might have a shot in the Gospel category.

New artist = first album in the eligibility period

I think it’s a bit more vague than that. Both Amy Winehouse and Feist had released multiple albums prior to being nominated for BNA last year (Amy won). Amy’s first album I believe was a bit of a hit in the UK. I think the artist has to have “made it big” during the year for the first album to count. Cookie won’t be prevented from submitted next year even though he has released albums on his own before. I think you only get to submit once though, so you have to decide if you are big enough to be nominated. That said, you can’t have several successful albums and then expect to be nominated in BNA. People aren’t going to vote for that.

Best Male Pop Vocal Performance (Cat 6)

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“On My Way Hereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Clay Aiken
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Crushà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – David Archuleta
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Break Anothaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“How Many Wordsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Blake Lewis

Realistically, it’s a long shot for all of them (and no shot for Blake). Archie has the best chance, but his newness will work against him. Plus, this is the John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Chris Brown category. Depending how it goes, Archie may get his shot next year, but I’m proud of him for what he’s accomplished this year.

Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (Cat 5)

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dance Like Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s No Tomorrowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Paula Abdul
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Fallà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Kimberley Locke
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“One Step At A Timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Jordin Sparks

I think Jordin will be thwarted by the likes of P!nk, Katy Perry and others I can’t recall at the moment. But she has an outside chance at a nomination.

Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals(Cat 8)
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“No Airà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown

This should get a nod. It would be a bit of a travesty if it doesn’t. Go Jordin!

“Crush” – David Archuleta (Jess Cates, Dave Hodges & Emanuel
    Kiriakou, songwriters)

But I have a tough time seeing any of these nominated. Carrie has the only real shot, but even then there were much bigger songs this year.

By the way, I am looking at everyone (and Brooke Barrettsmith is on there several times). A few I thought I might see but never did (yet) were Brianna Taylor, Sarah Burgess and Jeff Johnson. No semi-finalists seem to have anything even remotely notable this year.

I know this sounds a litle snobbish, but when DC is nominated I want it to be for hiw own music not the little rainbow that could. I wish it would go platinum then disappear into the sunset.

  • smartcookie

Does anyone have any theories about why a music company would or wouldn’t choose to put a single up for nomination ahead of the album? And will the singles that were released between Oct 07 and Sept 08 be eligible between Oct 08 and Sept 09, or is it a one-shot eligibility deal?

Obviously, Jive chose to put in “Crush,” when the album itself won’t be eligible till next year, while RCA chose not to put in “Light On,” again from an album that is not itself eligible. It could be that they just don’t like “Light On” that much, but I doubt they would’ve chosen it as the single if that were true. So I’m thinking there must be theories on this kind of thing. Like company A thinks it’s good promo for the upcoming album to possibly score a nom, or they think nobody will remember the song if they wait, or they expect to have other singles from the same artist to push next year, or even that they don’t want to create a connection with the later-releasing album because they’re all about singles. Or, if it really is only eligible this year, that this is their only shot.

And for company B, I can think that they might think the single’s chances for awards will be better if they are attached to the album (if it is still eligible next year), or that they worry that the album will be overlooked if they already put the single up last year, or that they are all about the album and don’t want to mess with the single. Or that it somehow affects future campaigns for Best New Artist.

Just curious what the prevailing wisdom behind these decisions might be. I guess I always assumed it was “throw everything against the wall and cross your fingers that something will stick.”

In general, I think Carrie will score several nominations, Bucky might sneak in, and the Jordin/Chris Brown duet may be her only shot. Ever since Milli Vanilli, I don’t think much of the Best New Artist race, anyway, but I guess mostly I think awards are for the winners — if you get one, it’s the greatest thing ever, and if you don’t, well, they don’t mean anything anyway.

  • soundscene

Does anyone have any theories about why a music company would or wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t choose to put a single up for nomination ahead of the album? And will the singles that were released between Oct 07 and Sept 08 be eligible between Oct 08 and Sept 09, or is it a one-shot eligibility deal?

“Crush” won’t be eligible next year because of when it was released, so this is the only chance to score a nomination for the song and performance (long-shot, but there’s no reason why Jive shouldn’t try).

I really don’t think submitting the single of an ineligible album one year will affect the artist’s chances of scoring nominations for the album or another single the following year (or “best new artist” for that matter). I’m not sure voters would really remember the timeline for each single and each album to the extent that it would affect their vote. And the “Best New Artist” category is littered with artists that seemingly should have been nominated the year before, but weren’t deemed successful enough (by their labels, I suppose).

The only reason I would think RCA wouldn’t submit “Light On” is the fact that it just doesn’t have enough buzz. It’s barely getting started on radio, and only went on sale a couple weeks ago. It seems some labels will submit anything and everything that could be eligible, but I do think that some of the bigger labels use discretion. If the song really has zero chance of a nomination, the label may want to hold back rather than being known as a label that will throw anything out there to see if it’ll stick. I don’t think Jive is doing that. “Crush” has enough sales, enough buzz and enough airplay to be a credible submission, but given the short timeline, “Light On” is not in the same position.

Then again, maybe RCA doesn’t want to split the single from the album for Grammy purposes. I still don’t think it makes a difference, but maybe the people at RCA do.

  • ozarka

I can understand why RCA wouldn’t submit LO because of the very good points you made above, but why wouldn’t they want to submit TOML? That has been a huge seller and is practically platinum already.

  • Suzanne

    1. The odds are so much better in the country categories. No wonder Jewel switched over this year.

    2. Crush video not submitted? Hmmm. Actually, the What About Now video is really outstanding. I hope it wins.

    3. It would be great if Sara Bareilles won for best new artist.

    4. What happened to Time of My Life? Not even put forward?

  • sma11ie

Oh cool, you just answered all the questions I had, soundscene. Everything you said makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

  • LK08

I imagine that Cook and/or RCA don’t want TOML to define him. It probably is best if he waits and uses a song off of his album.

  • E

ON TOML not submitted, I’m just wondering if former coronation songs were submitted? Was AMLT?

  • soundscene

I imagine that Cook and/or RCA donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want TOML to define him. It probably is best if he waits and uses a song off of his album.

I agree. Cook wasn’t exactly subtle about his … well … uncertainty about TOML. At the concert I went to he said, “I’m not sure about a song with a magic rainbow in it, but here we go.”

Even the possibility that his first Grammy nomination could be for a song that he didn’t choose and felt ambivalent about performing wouldn’t be the best start to his career.

  • tigervixxxen

So let me see if I got this right, you said RCA might not want to split LO from the album which will be eligible next year, does having all singles together during the album year make a stronger case for the album next year? So that RCA doesn’t want to throw LO out when it won’t win this year and rather hold it back to support the album as a whole next year? Because say it becomes a hit then it would lend more to the album’s nomination? Is LO for sure not eligible next year a a single song/record because it could have been submitted this year or does it have the chance to be submitted next year because its part of an album thats eligible for next year? Just trying to get handle on how all this works. It seems like there is a good reason they didn’t submit anything for Cook this year because apparently anyone can get sent in. So I’m just trying to figure it out.

Josh Gracin totally deserves a nomination. His second album is so good. Actually the song that should be nominated from the “We Weren’t Crazy album is “Unbelievable”.

I can’t believe some of those nominations. I guess anyone can be nominated.

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe some of those nominations. I guess anyone can be nominated.

I think it’s more anyone can be submitted for nominations.

I really like the “What about Now” video and would be really happy if it won.

I would also love to see Jordan win something.

I really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think submitting the single of an ineligible album one year will affect the artistà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s chances of scoring nominations for the album or another single the following year

Nope. It doesn’t. I know there are a lot of cases where an album was nominated one year and a single from the album was nominated the next. Example of this is “Ironic” by Alanis Morrisette. “Jagged Little Pill” was nominated (and won) Album of the Year but the single, “Ironic” wasn’t released until the followng year and therefore eligible for nominations despite the fact that the song is part of the album (and one of my FAVORITE, FAVORITE, FAVORITE albums of all time, btw)

    Blake? Uh, no.

I don’t know why Blake Lewis shouldn’t be submitted for nomination. I think he made a really good pop album with some really good pop songs on it. I think the Grammys acknolwledge and recognize talent and contributions other than just “making it big” in the music industry.
