Slash, guituarist for the bands Guns and Roses and Velvet Revolver just tweeted the following:

American Idol has asked me to do the mentor bit for Rock Week. #fb

That’s probably next week for the Top 4, as Top 3 is typically reserved for hometown visits and the judges/producers choice.

So, what do you think about rock week?   A pretty broad theme, nobody who is left should have problems finding suitable songs…

ETA: According to Paula Abdul, Natalie Cole will be performing this Wednesday for Rat Pack week.

ETA: Chris Daughtry is in LA right now, rehearsing some new songs.   Here’s what he tweeted on April 21st:

Should know this week what 1st single will be. Will let u know as soon as I know:)<

This is pure speculation, but I would not be surprised if Daughtry is the musical guest for Rock Week’s results show–a perfect opportunity for the band to debut the new single…

And, as it turns out, Daughtry WILL be debuting their new single on American Idol, according to the band’s latest VLog. Chris doesn’t specify a date, but I think Rock Week is a good bet.

Please be true! I agree mj that all of the ones remaining should do ok with Rock week, but I think Adam & Allison have the best shot at a real ‘moment’.

I’ve been waiting all season for Adam to bust out some GNR, and what better time than with Slash as a mentor?

Adam, if you’re reading, ‘Sweet Child ‘o Mine’, pretty pretty please? :innocent1_tb:

If there’s a shock boot this week, please don’t let it be Adam or Allison, they have to get to Rock week.

  • t2

Shock boot will be Kris — and I guess rock week will be how they get rid of him. If Adam can stop all of the schlock of the last couple of weeks and get back to Satisfaction, that would be a good thing.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Shock boot will be Kris à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and I guess rock week will be how they get rid of him.

Kris will have no problem whatsoever with rock week. He’s shown a ton of versatility tackling genres way out of his wheelhouse. And rock week is hardly out of his wheelhouse.

If he’s booted “shockingly” it will be about something else

  • Mateja

Oh, I hope that Adam and Allison survive this week!

  • baxter

GAH…..Ok….everyone of my dormant teenage hormones just woke up. I am a grown woman but …..DAYUM…….SLASH!!! I love GNR.

    *Snoopy Dance!!!!!*

  • bean99

I agree that Kris will do badly if he’s still there which is likely. I don’t think he can get away with what he did in disco week because he’s kind of a one trick pony as it is. I guess top 4 is 2 songs so Adam can do one OTT and one ballad in that order. It’s a perfect theme for Allison, hope she’s still there. I’m not sure what Danny would do but he has the right voice for it. Matt would also have a bit of trouble if he’s still there.

  • cay

Nah, Rock week would be hardest for Allison and Adam. Expectations through the roof. Remember Archie did best last year on Rock Week. Didn’t he do Stand By Me. I think it gives the non rockers a chance to do something a little different, while they aren’t expected to rock it like Allison and Adam.

Now, this week the expectations SHOULD be higher for Kris, Matt and Danny. (Although still Adam and Allison, I think, won’t get that consideration)

  • spunky

Would love to see Adam do “Sweet Child of Mine” I think he could be better thn Axel. I think he could also do Zeppelin or Aerosmith. Not too many people can do those. There are lots of things Allison can do too. I love her voice. Kris can find some Eagles or soft rock and do well. Danny will sound the same he does ever other week. Matt will do a Justin Timberlake impression.

  • cheese

I shudder to think what might qualify as “rock” in Danny Gokey’s world. Should be fun! This theme might actually be designed to put the Go in Gokey.

I really hope they give them a decent song list and we don’t end up with 8 Aerosmith and Heart songs.

I’ll go ahead and predict that Kris will sing John Mayer’s cover of “Free Fallin” if it clears.

I’m assuming Matt won’t be there for Top 4, but if he is, I really hope there won’t be any Coldplay or Fray songs on the list.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want to hear Adam sing GnR?

ETA: I don’t think Kris will have any problem at all turning any song into some neat little strummy acoustic thing. Plus, even John Mayer, James Morrison and Matt Nathanson are classified as “rock” on iTunes.

  • Buderschnookie

I am excited as hell at the very thought of Rock Week and can only hope that Allison is around to benefit from it.

  • Kirsten

LOL. I hope Matt survives until Rock week because I wonder what Kara will say when he sings yet another “rock song”. She’s told him repeatedly to get out of that box.

I’m not sure I’m ready to see Danny doing some rock swagger.

Kris will be fine. Rock isn’t all four on the floor, thundering guitars and screaming. There are lots of rock songs that are right up his alley. Plus, he has shown a talent for re-arranging, so he can apply the “Kris” filter to a few songs and come out looking like a “non-karaoke artist who made the song his own” (well, that’s if the judges like him. Otherwise, if they want him gone, he’ll get the stern “there are some iconic songs you just don’t change” even if that song is the “Witch Doctor” song from “Alvin and the Chipmunks”).

I think it’s Adam that has to be careful with this theme. I think the themes that are right in your wheelhouse are the biggest threat. If a song is already in your style, how are you going to change it up? We saw Adam deke left when many thought he would deke right this week when he changed up a disco ballad instead of going all Glambert on an upbeat disco song. Singing two rock songs in one night against the type of the song might be hard for him (or may make it seem like he’s trying too hard). Although, he is the king of finding arrangments on the internet (I’m less impressed with the Ricky/Orlund arrangements for him). Nevertheless, at this point in the combination, Adam doesn’t really have to do much to survive Final 4. He already has a really strong fan base.

Allison doesn’t have the same “rock” issues as Adam (it’s in her wheelhouse) because she doesn’t have a reputation for coming up with “radically new” arrangements, so people won’t be disapointed if she sings the songs straight.

  • http://www.voicesofidol.com a1c

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that we will hear any GNR- I believe that Axl owns the rights to all of their material and I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t expect any cooperation from him.

That said, I am excited as hell at the very thought of Rock Week and can only hope that Allison is around to benefit from it.

Actually this isn’t quite right. Neither Axl nor Slash own the rights to the GNR songs. Axl owns the rights to the Band name “Guns N’ Roses,” but that is it.

A company named Geffen owns the rights to every GNR song and doesn’t mind letting the songs be used. Hence why many of the GNR songs have appeared on the Guitar Hero game series.

So, I think we will surely see at least one GNR song.

  • hypertwink

Last year, David Cook was supposed to do “All Along the Watchtower” for Rock Week. Someone could do that this year since it seems like they could get permission for it again this year. Adam could definitely do it.

  • Buderschnookie

Actually this isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t quite right. Neither Axl nor Slash own the rights to the GNR songs. Axl owns the rights to the Band name à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Guns Nà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Roses,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ but that is it.

    Thanks for the clarification!!

  • SpenserJ

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know that we will hear any GNR- I believe that Axl owns the rights to all of their material and I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t expect any cooperation from him.

Yeah, I’m not sure how the whole catalogue stands, because they’ve all sued each other so much. But, Sweet Child of Mine is definitely still owned by Axl. Mickey Rourke thanked him in one of his many acceptance speeches for allowing them to use it in the Wrestler. Apparently, he let them use them it for next to nothing.

So, unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll get to hear that one. (Although if Adam did sing that – I really don’t think Mr. Spens could contain his fantarding at all – so maybe it’s better this way LOL).

With Slash being the mentor, I don’t think we’ll be hearing any song that Axl has any ownership in. But, I still think it can be a great night. There are a ton of good rock songs, and Slash is usually a pretty brutally honest guy. I think he’ll be a fun mentor.

If they’re going to roll out the Heart tunes again, then I’d hope for Allison to go old school and sing “Crazy on You”.

Not looking forward to Danny cheesing up a rock tune and making it sound exactly like the previous 7 songs he’s sang. It would be nice if this was the week we could put the Go in Gokey.

  • rockvixen

OMG I hope Adam and Allison make it through this week. Yay for ROCK!!!!

  • Kirsten

A company named Geffen owns the rights to every GNR song and doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t mind letting the songs be used. Hence why many of the GNR songs have appeared on the Guitar Hero game series.

Geffen owns the rights to the recordings, not the songs themselves. Geffen is a label. Which is why K-Tel used to get artists to re-record songs for the “Greatest Hits” albums they used to put out (cuts out the original label).

The people who wrote the song own the rights to the song and are the people who must be appealed to in order for the song to be able to be sung on Idol.

Let’s look at “Sweet Child of Mine”. The song was written by 5 people ( Steven Alder, Saul Hudson (aka Slash), Duff McKagan, Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin – i.e. the members of the band ) and the song is published jointly by Black Frog Music and Guns N’ Roses Music. Those are the publishing firms one must contact in order to be able to sing that song. If they are letting the song be used everywhere, they probably won’t mind them being on Idol either. But you do need to get approval from all the publishing companies involved. Song writers typically set up their own publishing companies so they are really just the writers (for instance, David Cook called his “Analog Heart Music Inc” while David Archuleta called his company “Archie Songs”)

  • Valentin432

If Allison and Adam are around, it will be the first time 2 rockers are there for a rock theme (first female rocker).

In season 5 top 4 , it was Elvis Prestley night with the shock Daughtry elimination
Season 6 top 6: Bon Jovi night, best night of the whole season even without any kind of rocker among the contestants.
Season 7 top 4: Rock and Roll HOF, DC sort of disapoints.
The producers seem to like this theme for top 4 night.

So looking at the past, there is definetly a possibility of some shocker with R&R night.

Regarding Allison singing Heart, it would probably be Barracuda, she says that it is the song she wants to sing in her profile page on AI.com
Adam says that he wants to sing A Whole Lot of Love (Led Zep).

  • chessguy99

There is plenty of rock Danny could do. I just don’t know how familiar he is with rock to find artists that would work. He could do ZZ-Top, Lynard Skynard, Springsteen.

  • amiroamor

Nah, Rock week would be hardest for Allison and Adam. Expectations through the roof. Remember Archie did best last year on Rock Week. Didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t he do Stand By Me. Word! I don’t think it would be hard for Kris too. He’s proven he can re-arrange songs and make it ‘Kris’.

Like Kirsten said, rock isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t all four on the floor, thundering guitars and screaming

  • mahrikka

Yay! How exciting. I really hope this is true and doesn’t fall apart somehow.

  • lovecert

Rock week is just to ensure that if this week Matt still survives, they are going all out against him on rock week.

Kris could do Snow Patrol. Actually “Run” qualifies under the “puppies and rainbow” selection after Leona’s version. Or U2′s Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own.

Danny’s probably doing Jars of Clay or Creed.

  • lurksalot

  • idolbeat

If Matt is still there, I hope he does do Fray again – the Fray’s cover of Heartless – not sure of it would qualify but The Fray made it into a rock song and Matt would do very well with it!

  • stelladallas

Whatever the “theme” is for the week doesn’t really matter because everyone sings whatever they want, anyway. I think themes are mainly just to stir up buzz. The group song usually adheres to the theme and that’s about it.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Kris will be fine. Rock isn’t all four on the floor, thundering guitars and screaming. There are lots of rock songs that are right up his alley.

Rock is way more than heavy metal, grunge and flyover, in my opinion.

Although, I’ve had conversations with folks online who have a very narrow, specific definition of what “rock” music is–your mileage may vary, I suppose.

But the reason I think the contestants who are left–even Matt–won’t have a problem with this theme, is that there are so many genres and styles that have contributed to the evolution of rock music.

Take a look at the artists who have made it into the rock and roll hall of fame–you’ve got soul, folk, funk, gospel and everything in-between represented there.

It’s a genre that’s easily adapted to any of the contestants’ style of singing.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

Oh, yes, some GnR, Adam, please!!!

    Slash is hot.

  • SpenserJ

Regarding Allison singing Heart, it would probably be Barracuda, she says that it is the song she wants to sing in her profile page on AI.com
Adam says that he wants to sing A Whole Lot of Love (Led Zep).

Ah, I should probably remember to read these. That would be a nice choice for her too, I think.

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s look at à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sweet Child of Mineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . The song was written by 5 people ( Steven Alder, Saul Hudson (aka Slash), Duff McKagan, Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin – i.e. the members of the band ) and the song is published jointly by Black Frog Music and Guns Nà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Roses Music.

Well, at least Steven Adler will say yes. He could use the money to buy more Heroin. As the legend goes, Slash came up with the memorable guitar solo in this song himself, so I guess the fact that they all own it together makes sense. I’m surprised that these guys can all ever agree to release a song for anyone, since there’s so much animosity, but I guess they all can use the money.

So, if those songs are an option, I’d actually prefer Adam sing Paradise City. But, that’s just me being selfish :)

Rock is such a wide open field. if any of the contestants can’t find songs they can shine on, they don’t deserve to be in the competition.

From this theme we SHOULD get an idea of what these ‘artists’ will do when it comes time to make their own CDs. I’m hoping that Allison, Adam, and Kris are all still in it.

  • TwigLA

I just googled ’100 greatest rock songs’ and came up with this cool site.

Rock week should be fun. Sounds like it could work for everyone, except Danny and possibly Matt. I’m not counting on Matt still being there, though.

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s probably next week for the Top 4, as Top 3 is typically reserved for hometown visits and the judges/producers choice.

How are they going to do judges’ choice on Top 3 week if they now have 4 judges?!

I am going to reserve all worry because somehow I think this is the night when he will give the performance he has been plotting in his freaky little beautiful mind. I for one can’t wait to see what he comes up with. I somehow don’t think he will falter like Daughtry or Cook did.

As usual people are underestimating Matt. There is a bunch of material for him to chose from in the rock genre. He loves Dave Matthews Band, Gavin Degraw, or he could do some thing from Bruce Springsteen, Beatles, or U2. Rock has a lot of blues to it. No Matter what Matt chooses he could change it up to fit him. Which IMO he is really good at.

Definition of Rock music from wikipedia…

Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢nà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ roll) is a form of music that evolved in the United States in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Its roots lay mainly in rhythm and blues, country, folk, gospel, and jazz.

Matt will have no problem finding something that will fit him and that he will sing amazingly. Go Matt!

Here’s Matt performing Chariot/I Don’t Wanna Be by Gavin Degraw before AI. He also performed I Don’t Wanna Be for his audition song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUFOqg-B6ZA

What I’m dreading is hearing Adam take another rock song and butchering it. I don’t understand why Adam is considered a rocker at all. He is not a rocker by any stretch of the imagination and when he tries to be IMO it screams poser!

  • leome

This year there are 4 judges, so how will it work in top 3 when each judge picks a song? Will they use that for top 4?

I think it can be a good week for everyone. There are tons of different rock songs out there. There’s even country rock if Danny wants to go there.

And yes, if Jordin is on Top 3 I think Daughtry will be there top 4, it makes sense with Rock being the theme and all. The only other option would be finale, but there are so many artists playing in the finale that people kinda get lost. Top 4 is better.

  • savgal

Agree with the poster above who suggested U2 for Kris. YOWZA! Would love to see him do “She Moves In Mysterious Ways” or “One”.
What if he really took a risk and did a Daughtry tune, his way?
Even some Creedence would suit him, I think…
Yes, that is an extremely broad category, something for everyone. If they are doing two songs, am wishin’ for for a slowish one such as CCR’s “Long As I Can See The Light”, then a faster one like “She Moves”.

  • Tess

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand why Adam is considered a rocker at all.

Just took a look at the Greatest Rock Songs website and I was amazed at the artists listed on that site. The artists and genres run the gamut from hillbilly to acid rock and everything inbetween like R&B, surfer music, psychedelic, country, soul, jazz, etc. I personally think that the term “Rocker” is probably the most generic in all of musicdom.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

What Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m dreading is hearing Adam take another rock song and butchering it. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand why Adam is considered a rocker at all. He is not a rocker by any stretch of the imagination and when he tries to be IMO it screams poser!

I would never, ever define Adam as “a rocker”.
Nor would I term him a balladeer, or Glam, a crooner, or any of 100 genres.
    IMO he defies categorization.

But Adam can do rock with the best of them.
Do you have The Citizen Vein track “Rough Trade”?
That’s as rock as it gets IMO.

  • JJ123

I just want to skip Jazz standards and go straight to rock!! Guns N Roses were the first band I obsessed over and I still loooooove Slash and Daughtry is my current obsessioin so yeah I’m a little excited over here!!

I think each of the contestants have plenty of choices to fit their styles however song choice has not been most of their strong suits this season so I’m not holding my breath.

Yeah, Top 4 night or the Finale seem to be the most logical. So exciting! Does anyone know what the title of their single is? Slash and Daughtry in one night. Now if only the Top 4 is Adam, Allison, Matt and my boy Kris, it would be perfect. Top 3 is reserved for Jordin and Katy Perry already. I really thought though I saw somewhere that MJ is performing at the Top 4 night.

Sometimes however the songwriters sign over some or all of their rights to the label or a publishing house or some other third party – remember McCartney and Jackson battling it out for the Beatles catalogue

Lennon and McCartney (and early on, Harrison and Starr) signed their rights away to a publishing company called “Northern Songs”. That’s fairly typical. Most songwriters set up their own publishing company and give it a name, but they are really the only people who write for that company (e.g. the afore mentioned “Archie Songs”).

What happened with Lennon and McCartney is that they decided to take their company public (for further tax purposes – some capital gains issues) and only jointly held 30% of the company (Harrison and Starr held a small part as well). Through a bunch of changes (and missteps), Lennon and McCartney got put over a barrel because they didn’t have controlling interest. Frustrated that they couldn’t get control of their songs and tied to a contract they couldn’t get out of (their new songs were also owned by the publishing company), they sold out their shares in a deal to get out of the contract on ownership of the new songs. When ATV sold it’s ownership of the catalogue, Michael Jackson outbid McCartney (with the support of Yoko Ono). MJ got into financial trouble, so a deal was made with Sony. Basically, the entire thing is a mess and if the break-up of the Beatles hadn’t been so acrimonious, it may not have gotten as bad as it did.

  • gmn

I agree reeboks1. Matt or Danny needs to go this week.

  • wonderings

Slash – fascinating, yet awesome, mentor choice! Two non-singers as mentors in the same year? And NO FEMALE MENTORS? Really AI? (and no, Paula and Kara don’t count)

Dear Allison, welcome to the men’s world of music. Now go kick some ass.

Slash’s tweet implies that they’re just finalizing the themes for the week after this one *now*, vexingly last minute. http://twitter.com/SlashHudson

But it’s interesting that two singers this year have picked songs that Slash played guitar on, both Michael Jackson tunes — Black & White (Adam) & Give in to Me (Allison).

  • tinawina

Wow, I so am looking forward to Top 4 week now! Slash (and his what? me black? self LOL) AND Daughtry’s new song? Cool beans.

  • Cheetara86

Oh God Allison better stay for top 4…I mean if she stays, this could be her chance to get in the top 3…but she has to do great this week if anything.

I like Matt, but it will probably come down to Allison and Matt for who is going home and I hope me and God have a great relationship cause I want Allison to stay badly.

  • sunchick

I am a rock chick through and through, but I don’t have high hopes for this theme. Last season during R&R HOF week we barely got a taste of rock with Cook’s awesome but way too short Baba O’Riley. Nobody else actually rocked. If the pattern this season holds true, it will be the same kind of thing. The upside would be Adam finally having a legit opportunity to do something Bowie-esque. FIngers crossed, because I’ve been hoping for that all season. Kris would be wise to stay away from the electric guitar, as I don’t really think that suited him, and do something softer. Allison will sing like she has sung every week and I’ll grow more bored with her. Danny….shudders. He’ll gospel-ize something and I will hate it. If it’s top 4 I don’t think Matt will be around. Why didn’t they have Slash mentor last season when there was an actual rocker competing? Not looking forward to Daughtry, either. Don’t care for his music. Would rather they had Cook do BBS for rock week and skipped CBTM alltogether. Fail, Fuller. *grumble grumble selfish poutingcakes*

  • cookcricket

Kris will have no problem whatsoever with rock week. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shown a ton of versatility tackling genres way out of his wheelhouse. And rock week is hardly out of his wheelhouse.

    If heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s booted à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“shockinglyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ it will be about something else

    ITA, mj!!

There are lots of rock songs that are right up his alley. Plus, he has shown a talent for re-arranging, so he can apply the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ filter to a few songs and come out looking like a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“non-karaoke artist who made the song his ownà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (well, thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s if the judges like him. Otherwise, if they want him gone, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll get the stern à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“there are some iconic songs you just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t changeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ even if that song is the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Witch Doctorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ song from à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Alvin and the Chipmunksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ).

    LOL Kristen, but I agree.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll go ahead and predict that Kris will sing John Mayerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cover of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Free Fallinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ if it clears.

I love this cover!! I believe Kris could do it justice and then he would only have to focus on changing up one song instead of two.

  • Trina

OMG Daughtry AND Slash in one week?! YESYES!!! OMG FLAILS!! I’m more excited about the new Daughtry song than what the contestants are singing!

  • wordnerdarchie

Would rather they had Cook do BBS for rock week and skipped CBTM alltogether. Fail, Fuller. *grumble grumble selfish poutingcakes*

But can you imagine the hatchet job the AI sound mix guys would have done to BBS? If they messed up with CBTM as badly as they did, do you think they would have done justice to BBS? (I’m not a fan of AI’s sound techs this season. Case in point: Archie’s TMH performance.)

  • yeahyeahsure

I wonder what Slash is going to perform. I heard he’s doing a solo project so maybe from that. Maybe he’ll perform with Daughtry since they did it already at Clive’s Pre-Grammy Party. Hah, maybe they should just do “What I Want” but Chris said new single so maybe not.

I hope Allison makes it this week. This is SO her genre and I’m sure Adam and Kris would find something spectacular!

  • hollygo9

Would rather they had Cook do BBS for rock week and skipped CBTM alltogether. Fail, Fuller. *grumble grumble selfish poutingcakes*

    WORD!

  • L2

    De-lurking here to comment…

I can understand the love for Kris, but not the belief that he is different each week. I find him to actually be a very good artist who has a very John Mayer-esque/Mraz kind of style, which is rather repetitive in that whatever the theme he is simply going to put some “laid back, lounge lizard” spin to it.

The unfortunate situation for Adam is that voters cannot seem to stand for someone to be so good for too long. He is on the verge of entering Tamyra Gray territory, especially with the mis-perception that Kris “is improving”. With Kris, what is happening is that he has managed to stay middle of the pack while other, less deserving contestants fall by the wayside. It has been much easier to focus on the less than stellar talents of the others.

I do not believe Allison has neither enough of a fan base (willing to vote) nor fans of other fallen idolettes who are willing to throw votes her way. More than likely, the votes are going to Kris and Danny (ugh). She has a good voice (not great; even for a 16-year old…definitely needs voice lessons) but all she does is simply add a “rock” spin to her songs. Yawn. I am with Sunchick on this one:

Allison will sing like she has sung every week and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll grow more bored with her.

I am hoping that the upcoming weeks will shake loose the flotsam and jetsam that is Matt, Danny, and Allison. I am looking forward to Rock Week only because I think it bodes well for Adam (yay!). And did I hear correctly that there will be a Big Band week? That should be interesting as well. Not sure how anyone can not do something in a big band style. If Danny is around he will probably take that to mean he can bring in a choir as backup. No, wait, he will probably sing “I Wanna Know What Love Is” and do it during Rock Week.

  • lg

Looking forward to Rock Week. Was nuts over GnR during the early days. I want to see Adam bang his head a few times. :tongue1_tb: He is every bit the rocker to me, one made even better by his R&B leanings. Good news from Daughtry, can’t wait to see him and hear the new single.

As someone mentioned upthread, I think there are plenty of good rock songs for Danny, including but not limited to Skynyrd (just not Sweet Home AL), and the Allman Bros. I think he’d do well on “Remedy” by the Black Crowes.

As MJ said, the field is wide open, so it should be a great night. Kris seems like a pretty good guitarist, so this may be a good time for him to shine. I have no doubts Allison will do well, if she picks the right song.

Hope Matt makes it to rock week!

  • ettacandy

This will be SO freakin’ cool!

Slash is a pretty talented musician, and since he’s not a vocalist, I’m hoping his mentoring will stretch to the arrangement as well. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

And while I’m creating scenarios, I’d love to see Slash sit in with the AI house band. The band’s guitarist is quite excellent but Slash is, well, SLASH.

  • kimberann

What? I think Cook should be performing with Slash on Rock week. He’s the idol who actually won and has a hugely successful album out. I agree sunchick, why not have Dave perform BBS to help his sales and charting of that song. Daughtry doesn’t even have an album out yet. Anyone think Dave might be on there too?

And not sure who will succeed on Rock week? Maybe Allison or Danny.

  • cookcricket

Would rather they had Cook do BBS for rock week and skipped CBTM alltogether. Fail, Fuller. *grumble grumble selfish poutingcakes*

Thanks for saying what I was thinking. :(

  • JJ123

I think it’s great for Daughtry to be on since they’ve had a hugely successful album and are getting ready to release their sophmore effort…hopefully to be just as successful. It’s a pretty big deal to debut the song on there….no one has heard anything off the new CD yet so it’ll be a surprise to their fanbase….I love it. Plus Slash played on the first CD and played with them at Clive’s Pre Grammy party in 08 so they’re almost like pals now haha. The fact that Cook is the one that “actually won” doesn’t mean much in the real world, Chris didn’t win and has every right to be back on rock week….great way to kick off the promo for CD #2 due out this summer!

  • neonorange

Allison and rock week – yeah!!!!!! Love Idolatry’s new vid with Let the Right One in clips – that was one sick movie.

Disappointed though it’s not Cook being asked back for rock week. What does the winner have to do to get on this show? Sheesh.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Disappointed though ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not Cook being asked back for rock week. What does the winner have to do to get on this show? Sheesh.

Um, the winner was already ON the show? It’s someone else’s turn. DC will already be back for the finale also, since he’s the reigning winner. I’d say Fantasia should be the one asking that question. Because if all this speculation is true, she’ll be the only winner not invited back to perform in a non-finale results show this season.

I like the fact that both Daughtry and Jordin will be premiering new singles on the show that no one has heard yet. And yeah to what JJ123 said about the connection between Chris and Slash. So I guess I’m just really not seeing the stretch or the big deal about Daughtry potentially being the music guest on this particular theme week. Shrug.

(Btw, Spense – the comment from earlier about Mr. Spense not being able to contain his fantarding if Adam were to sing a GNR song made me absolutely lmfao today. Thanks for that! ;))

Most Idol fans don’t care enough about Dave to want him back to perform again 3 weeks later.

  • yeahyeahsure

Daughtry had 2 rock hits on radio, a 4x Platinum album and has not appeared on Idol yet. I think they deserve their appearance. Jj123, I read somewhere that Chris’ fave guitar is a guitar given to him by Slash on his birthday so I think they’re friends LOL!

  • JJ123

To you it may be a mis-perception, but to me it’s a difference of opinion.

I didn’t want DC on both times, I just would have preferred to have him do Bar-Ba-Sol for Rock week. I understand that the idol winner and sometimes contestant love needs to be spread around for appearing on the show.

That being said, I’m a little curious if TPTB are flying by the seat of their pants for their week to week themes, so at the time DC was scheduled for CBTM, they didn’t even know they were going to have Rock Week.

  • SpenserJ

(Btw, Spense – the comment from earlier about Mr. Spense not being able to contain his fantarding if Adam were to sing a GNR song made me absolutely lmfao today. Thanks for that! ;))

LOL. And, it will be considerably more dangerous if Adam could somehow get a Led Zeppelin tune cleared. Also, the only AI contestant whose music Mr. Spens has ever willingly listened to after the show is Chris Daughtry. So, this week could just be a fantardapalooza in the Chez Spens.

Most Idol fans donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care enough about Dave to want him back to perform again 3 weeks later.

True that. And, for this particular Idol fan, his appearance just three weeks ago was a snoozefest. So, I’m all for something new. I’ll be interested to see Daughtry on tv again. I’ve always liked Chris live on TV, even if I wasn’t that fond of his CD (although clearly a lot of people were). I saw Chris and his band early in his solo tour, when let’s just say the band was not very “tight”. I’m assuming the last 2 years and touring with Bon Jovi in huge arenas has upped their game considerably.

So, I’m interested to see kind of where they’re at now. I’m also wondering what the new music will sound like. I’m hoping for something a little more interesting than the previous Nickelback, rock-lite stuff.

  • JJ123

I’m not exactly a huge fan of Adam’s…nothing against him just not usually my favorite…..and I was a HUGE fan of GnR but I’m thinking he could sing the shit out of some their songs and may finally turn me into a fan…..as long as he doesn’t over rehearse all of his moves and do that perfectly planned out headbanging again…blah!! If he sings something like Paradise City he needs to let it all hang out…no plotted out moves just sing it, feel it, and go with it….that’s what’ll make me a fan!

  • neonorange

Ummm, I guess I missed that week. I am not religious about the whole idol watchin thing. Fantasia would be cool. I watched the vid with her and Jennifer and it was incredible. I’ll probably skip Daughtry, even though I like Chris’ voice, I can’t stand the whole formula rock he does – ballad, rock verse, ballad, rock verse, ad nauseum. You know the whole Nickelback thang. It’s like rock for people who don’t like rock. I would fuckin kill for a Metallica night. Isn’t Master of Puppets Simon’s theme song?

  • lorenzo

I’m pretty stoked about the Slash thing, I’ve got his three Les Paul Signature guitars and I love them, he’s written some great riffs… and he’ll probably beg Adam to fron VR…

Also, I’m a HUGE Adam fan, but ya’ll need to chill on Danny… he’s a decent singer, and he belongs there, and remember, “Judge the less….” You haven’t walked in his shoes… THE GUYS WIFE DIED A MONTH BEFORE THE SHOW! I would DIE if I lost my wife…

  • sunchick

Um, the winner was already ON the show?

Aw hell, I doubt anyone expects Cook to be trotted out again. Not that I’d complain, but yeah, overkill, and the pimp the winner thing’s been done. I was just having a Veruca Salt moment. You know, couldn’t help bitching because I don’t care for Daughtry, and I secretly really wanted Cook to sing BBS on AI instead of CBTM because I flove BBS and don’t like CBTM, as far as his two simultaneous singles go, so yeah. If there was no new Daughtry single to premiere, I might have gotten my way with BBS for rock week instead of CBTM and iTunes week. Maybe. Blah blah more poutycakes. I’ll get over it if we get a good glam moment from Adam or something.

  • neonorange

I love Kris but I would vote non-stop for Adam if he sung Walk on the Wild Side. Or Danny if he sung Immortal’s Antarctica. A girl can dream can’t she?

  • yeahyeahsure

I would seriously injure Adam if he decides to mellow down on Rock week the way he did on Disco week. Like seriously. I want over the top glory notes on that week from him!

I prefer Cook’s rock. It’s true rock and not this post grunge watered down crap. He bears his soul in his writing. Nickelback and company are so yesterday.

    I don’t consider Adam a rocker either.

I can’t wait for Daughtry’s new music and his performance on AI. I liked their previous work and album, so let’s hope their new single will be even better. And after being disappointed by Cook’s album and his two singles, I hope Chris won’t disappoint me.

And a few posters were wishing that DC would be invited back to sing on Rock week, except that he WAS already back on this year’s result show, singing Come Back To Me. As much as I love Cook, I don’t want to see him coming back twice. :D

  • Thea

REALLY, REALLY looking forward to Slash as a mentor. That has the potential to be really cool. Can you imagine the interaction with Adam and Danny especially? It should be fun. And despite his slightly crazy image, he can be quite interesting and well spoken in his inteviews. Problem is, I feel this year mentors are given very little space, even less than last year.

Also looking forward to Daughtry’s new single, hoping the long wait after the first album means he has something new for us in terms of sound (I liked his first album but it was a bit all the same).

I agree with whoever said before that the producers are improvising with the themes. I have the feeling more than one person cancelled on them.

Also agree I would have preferred DC to come back for rock week with BBS rather than with CBTM, but I guess scheduling and his producers got in the way. I read somewhere that he considers BBS the song that is more representative of him, so the only reason why it is only his 3rd single must be…someone else.

  • bean99

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m more excited about the new Daughtry song than what the contestants are singing!

Me too. Can’t wait to see them perform it! :clap_tb:

“Daughtry had 2 rock hits on radio”.

Really? Which ones? The ones that were played were cheesy rockyfied ballads at best.

  • yeahyeahsure

Really? Which ones? The ones that were played were cheesy rockyfied ballads at best.

They had 2 Top 10 rock hits – “It’s Not Over” peaked at #5 and “What I Want” peaked at #6 at the Active Rock format (or was it Mainstream Rock?). I believe INO charted at the Alternative formats as well. I’m sure the numbers guru can provide more stats but that’s what I remember. And I wouldn’t classify either INO or WIW as “ballads”.

While I don’t think DC should come back in three weeks (and I am an avid DC fan)I wish he had done Rock Week and BBS instead of the CBTM. I wonder why you said most Idol fans don’t care enough about him, how did he get a platinium album then ?

  • http://twitter.com/nokking nokking

this is gonna be a good week for me! I’d love for Adam to sing November Rain (my personal favorite) but anything he does I think will be great.

Also love ‘Whole Lotta Love’ by Led Zepplin that he wanted to sing…

  • BootStar

Love Daughtry. Love Cook. Love Adam.

That being said, why on earth would they have Cook back when they haven’t had Daughtry back to perform live in a couple of years? I can’t wait to hear his new single. Loved the first album but am sick to death of it. And, yeah, it was “formulaic,” but frankly so was Cook’s. Why can’t I love them both?

And Adam is no more a rock “poser” than anybody else. I just don’t get this whole “rock cred” thing. If it takes being a heroin addict and a serial womanizer to make somebody a legitimate rocker, then I’ll take my “posers” any day of the week. There are many kinds of rock and many types of rockers.

Also, I just assumed Cook would sing Bar-ba-sol at the finale, or do we know otherwise?

  • sterling

Someone mentioned Slash not being a vocalist, but that’s not completely true. He isn’t the frontman, but he sang backup stuff on a lot of GnR stuff and I’m pretty sure he sang on his solo album he came out with several years ago. Also, you can find some versions of GnR songs with him singing online. He’s a brilliant guitarist and knows a lot about music in general so he’ll be a good mentor either way, but he knows plenty about singing also.

  • JJ123

but he sang backup stuff on a lot of GnR stuff and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pretty sure he sang on his solo album he came out with several years ago.

okay….I am a bad bad fan, I didn’t even know about his album that came out…????….I know about the one coming out and I went to 3 GnR concerts and never once seen Slash stand near a microphone…..guess I need to to some googling.

  • breakdown

I can hardly wait until next week. Daughtry and Slash equals yowza! Why shouldn’t Chris be back on the show? He’s one of the true successes of Idol. And if Quentin can mentor Slash sure as hell can. SAVE THE ROCKER one more week! I’d be fine with her going out in 4th place. Both Chris and Jason went out 4th. It’s a great spot.

  • ggdoorsfan

now this one i will tune in to see…. love me some guns and roses, especially mr slash, and gotta root for fellow north carolinian daughtry to kick butt and take names…. this has the earmarks of a very good show…. wonder what advice/tips slash will have for adam… can’t wait to see this, and how lambert applies them to his performance…….. and especially looking forward to daughtry’s new single, and his next cd… been a good year for tarheels, and i hope the streak continues. you go dude!

I could be wrong about him singing backup but I am almost positive he did some. I’m pretty sure he sings some backup on some VR stuff but again not positive. His solo album was called Slash’ Snakepit, although I was wrong to call it a solo album, it was really a band called Slash’ Snakepit.

Better details on it here…. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash's_Snakepit

  • adamisthemanfan

I’m really looking forward to this. I really hope Adam does a fuller version of Bohemian Rhapsody which was his audition piece, or some Guns N’ Roses or even better “Dude looks like a lady” from Aerosmith…I think he would knock that out of the park! f you listen closely to his “play that funky music” performance where the song switches keys and he sings “play that funky music” and it sounds exactly like Steven Tyler in that Aerosmith song when he says “ooh, what a funky lady”… it would fit his voice and style perfectly. I hope Allison does well, idk why ppl haven’t been voting for her, she is really talented for a 17 yo…it should be fun, but Adam and Allison have to careful not to overdo it with their performances, since the rest of them will be the underdogs ppl wont have such high expectations…just my opinion.

  • adamisthemanfan

As a more serious, ballady type of (rock) song I think “Mother” by John Lennon would be appropriate for Adam..or maybe even Allison but Allison can sing anything, I think she’s proven that…as for Danny Gokey he should sing an Eagles song like “hotel California” or a Journey song…I think he has nice voice…love the raspiness too…he actually sounds a lot like Michael Bolton…someone suggested that Kris do a John Mayer song and I think they are totally right…Matt i have no idea, lol…

  • glamadamfan

adamisthemanfan said “as for Danny Gokey he should sing an Eagles song like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“hotel Californiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or a Journey song”

NOOOOOOOOO please. Danny already almost ruined Earth, Wind & Fire. Please please please do not let him ruin Journey. He does not have the range to sing Steve Perry, not even close. He’d have to take it down at least 2 steps and I can’t stand that. I don’t even like him doing an Eagles tune but he might be able to do that without taking it down. I can’t see his evangelical self doing Hotel California though. Maybe “The Best of My Love” would be more his speed.

  • kbr

Finally a Rock week on Idol! I hope Allison makes it to this week. I wonder what their limitations will be because last year they did R&R Hall of Fame and that made it easy to riggle out of a rock song. Top 4 is when they pick 2 songs right? Adam should definitely try some GNR he has the Axle Rose scream down. Hopefully more specific info comes out…

  • adamisthemanfan

to glamadamfan: okay well maybe Hotel California is better suited to Adam’ style but I think Gokey could redeem himself if he does the song justice, but what you say about not “seeing his evangelical self doing Hotel California” that could be true, I was make making a suggestion purely on the voice, but context wise you are right he might not risk it…idk for me his performances have been too safe and lacking in innovation…personally I think Allison deserves to compete with Adam in the finals but ppl aren’t voting for her as much, which is something that puzzles me but w/e at least she has made it this far…we shall see.

  • ppwars

    SAVE THE ROCKER

I think Allison deserves to compete with Adam in the finals but ppl arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t voting for her as much, which is something that puzzles me but w/e at least she has made it this farà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦we shall see.

I have said that I was “baffled” by the number of Alli votes a couple of times in these posts. But not really. Very little has to do with the quality of her performances. She undeniably is a prodigy, rated as best by some independent critics, probably more than any others ‘cept Adam ( but higher than him on occasion) until this last round shaping up the finals It has always been that she is a long shot to win, or rise this high in the contest. Some of reasons are understandable, but not necessarily fair or true; some are intention wrongs. blabla.
