Glee To Pay Tribute to The Who’s Tommy? (Report)

And the Glee tribute episodes keep rolling on in? This could just be a rumor, but knowing Ryan Murphy and his love for things bigger than life, I could totally see this happening.

According to gossip columnist Liz Smith, Glee is planning a tribute to the legendary rock opera, Tommy.

Now we hear that “Glee” producer Ryan Murphy plans a lavish remake of “Tommy” for the hit Fox show that has lost a little of its heat recently. The “Tommy” episode, if it happens, will no doubt run longer than the usual hour. It’s hard to imagine something as epic as “Tommy,” cut down.

Roger Daltrey, who can still look awfully good in skin-tight denim, and Pete Townsend are expected to make appearances.

So, we’ve already had a tribute to Michael Jackson, which was supposed to be the only tribute of the season. Coming up are Saturday Night Fever and Whitney Houston themed episodes  set to air after the hiatus.  Now, Tommy too? There are only 8 episodes left in the season. One is a double ep on May 15. Maybe that’ll be the Tommy tribute?

If this happens it will be interesting to see how the producers shoe horn the theme into upcoming  storylines  that are supposed to revolve around the kids graduating and anticipating their post-Glee lives.

Okay. I probably need to google this up. Who is Tommy?

I wonder how much of Glee’s target audience know what Tommy is. I’d be surprised if it was more than 25%. I hope they at least know who The Who are.

I love The Who and Tommy, but there is no way Glee can do it justice.  It’s a rock opera not a pop opera.

jennyl2, Googling it is probably a good idea. Very briefly, Tommy was an album written as a rock opera in the late 60’s – 1969, I believe, mostly by Pete Townshend of The Who -an English rock band. The song many people recognize from it is “Pinball Wizard” – even if they don’t know the rest of the tracks.

It’s a pretty interesting story, I think – it’s been around for quite some time – and I recall Roger Daltrey was planning to tour Tommy in 2011 – but I don’t remember if that happened. I have no idea how Glee can incorporate this – I don’t follow the show – but “That deaf dumb and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball.”

Tommy was made into a very successful broadway musical about 15 years ago. I saw it twice. The broadway arrangements are pretty poppy and perfect for Glee. I’m beyond tired of these tribute episodes – wish they would just focus on the storylines and 2-3 songs per episode. But there was a lot worse themes than Tommy! Listening to You is a great group number, as is Sensation and Pinball Wizard. Amber or Naya could tear into Acid Queen. There was a new song written for the musical – I believe my own eyes – which is a lovely duet. Also I’m free and see me, hear me. They could do really good things with this

I’m not fond of the tribute shows, but I could get into ‘Tommy’ if they incorporate well into a storyline. It would work with Quinn’s recovery and therapy after the accident.

Lots of really great songs on that album.

THIS is one I will watch!  Love TOMMY!

If they are doing a remake of Tommy, surely that means the movie, not the album, or the musical?

Three songs that’s I remember from the movie –
Tina Turner – Acid Queen  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cKCGgmaSIE (great one from Tina Turner.)
Elton John – Pinball Wizard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cySnG42s0lE
The Who – See Me, Feel Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QV_9pn7MGUo

‘And Tommy doesn’t know what day it it, he doesn’t know who Jesus was or what praying is” – too epic for Glee, I think. I’m more of a Quadrophenia fan myself, but I know every note of Tommy.

I’ve never liked Glee, but I’m going to make a point of seeing this episode. I played The Who nonstop for a year in my car.

What an excellent idea!  We’ll see if there are any members of Glee who know how to rock!  Plus, Pete and Roger will appear?  Saw Roger a few years back with the London Pop Orchestra and he still had a good voice!

Yeah, I wonder too… rockers like Mark Salling (Puck), Samuel Glee Project 1 (Joe Hart), winner Glee Project 2  ? Still feel that the Glee actors are too “popmusic”… Must be cute though to see Darren Criss and Kevin Mc Hale trying this out…

I am not familiar with Tommy…-still fangirling over the Saterday Night Fever episode though-  maybe Tommy is a good idea for Halloween Season 4 ?
