Tone and talent. The writing isn't always even and the first few episodes stumbled here and there, but the show is getting smart by maintaining a surreal / alterna-reality sorta tone, as MJ wrote. And the kids on this show are just crazy talented. These are kids I'd watch sing just about anything. How they got them all on one show was a coup. And Jane Lynch, well, she is a treasure. I've been a fan of hers for years and in Sue she has found her perfect "mainstream" type. If she isn't at least nominated for an Emmy next year, I'll send hate mail to every academy member.
