Listen to songs from the Glee Whitney Houston tribute episode, “Dance With Somebody”  set to air on Tuesday.

The graduating seniors grapple with letting go as they prepare to leave the safe confines of McKinley high and Glee club. The heartbreak is set to a soundtrack of seven of Whitney’s most beloved tunes.

“How Will I Know” is a gorgeous a cappella arrangement sung by Rachel (Lea Michele), Santana (Naya Rivera), Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Mercedes (Amber Riley).  One of my favorite Glee covers ever. Really.

“Dance With Somebody” is Brittany (Heather Morris) on lead, with Santana. The duo perform a dance number during this. Girlfriend is a bit too auto tuned, but I expect the dance number will make up for it.

“Saving All My Love” is a sweet duet between Joe (Samuel Larsen) and Quinn (Dianna Agron). I think there’s a budding romance there!

“So Emotional” is a high-powered duet between Rachel and Santana. If you’ve watched the promos, you see Santana admit she will miss Rachel when they graduate. Are these two frenemies making amends?

It’s the return of Angry Blaine (Darren Criss) as he performs a blistering “It’s Not Alright (But It’s OK).  The photo above is Blaine sitting at a table like the one in the Whitney Houston video.

Uh oh. Who is the cheater Blaine is telling to GTFO?  The duo seeks couples counseling from Emma, and according to the episode synopsis, boyfriend, Kurt’s,  “questionable behavior” threatens the duo’s  his relationship Oh noes.

But something tells me everything will work out by episodes end when Kurt sings a sweet love song, “I Have Nothing”, to Blaine.  Chris Colfer had a pretty big song to tackle here.  Maybe too big. The song would have worked better with a more intimate arrangement, but parts of the song are really lovely.

“My Love Is Your Love” brings New Directions together to sing. Solos galore from Mercedes, Artie (Kevin McHale), Blaine, Kurt and more.

The best of this lot are “How Will I Know”, “Your Love is My Love”  and “It’s Not Alright.” I’m actually looking forward to this episode (and I’m not a Whitney Houston fan) Listen!

How Will I Know – Rachel, Santana, Kurt and Mercedes (a cappella)

I Wanna Dance with Somebody – Brittany with Santana

Saving All My Love – Joe and Quinn

So Emotional – Rachel and Santana

“It’s Not Right But It’s Okay” – Blaine

I Have Nothing – Kurt

My Love is Your Love – Hew Directions – Solos galore!

I Have Nothing is rough…but still better than Shannon lol

How Will I know is flawless

“How Will I Know” is AMAZING. I’m already excited for this episode.

  • Reflections On Life

Can’t believe how completely they butchered It’s Not Right But It’s Ok, completely sucking the edge right out of Whitney’s (arguably) most urban hit. Possibly their worst cover ever.

OTOH they completely elevated How Will I Know.  Breathed depth into an otherwise treacly song. One of their best covers.

Ha ha. So true! I expect the song will be edited down and better in context, aided by Chris’ flawless acting.

We all forget that Glee is about a Glee club of highschoolers… so not everyone can sing as good as Amber Riley (Mercedes), Lea Michele ( Rachel) or even Alex Newell (Unique) … So Chris Colfer’s take was not so bad for his character as a highschooler.

Never thought he could sing that high…  Still would love to see him sing “Come what may” (Moulin Rouge) or  “My Sharona” from the Knack… (cfr tweet from Ashley Fink). And I liked his campy voice in “Love Shack” in an earlier episode. My Chris Colfer’s favorite is still until now “Rose’s Turn” (Laryngitis).

Who is the cheater ? Kurt I guess… but with whom or what is he cheating ?? Karofsky ? It does not have to be a person…
Maybe Kurt is so busy with his preparations to Nyada , and spending long evenings with Mercedes and/or Rachel and ignoring Blaine and Blaine got jealous ?

Darren Criss’s voice doesn’t fit with diva songs like “Fighter” or “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay”, why don’t the producers realize that ?

I against everything that has to do with this episode.  It shouldn’t have been done.

  • Kariann Hart

Yes, it is a fabulous performance – and I do like the theme!

Thinking back to the first season, look how much progress the group has made in both singing and dancing!

Is the Glee Project scheduled?  I’d like an American Idol to be added to the cast!  :o)

Totally. I rewatched the very first episode of Glee a couple of weeks ago. Wow, what a difference from where they are today.

  • starfishy2000

Wow what a bunch if hate comments. I may not think these are the best ever from Glee (except How Will I know!), but they are not horrible! I am glad to see they actually managed to use songs that actually fit the storylines instead of just songs thrown in for no reason.

Truth be. I am so not a Whitney Houston fan. I only like 3 of her songs in her entire catalog and one of them is with Mariah. Every time she comes on the radio, I’ll switch channel. So, when I heard Glee was doing her, I was a little afraid that for the first time, I’ll dislike Glee music. But the kids did well. Yay! I don’t hate any of the songs lol!

Fav ever. Beggars can’t be chooser. I’ve been waiting for Chris to sing a solo for 13/14? episodes. Since I’m the Greatest Star. I would have never chosen him to sing a Whitney song, his voice is too delicate for a diva type of song, but I think he sung it very well. He made me love the song. And its a love song to Blaine! Its going to be on repeat on my ipod once I get my hands on the track.

My second fav ever. Darren. I love his take on Its Alright But I’m ok. So drawn in to the anger in the song. Uh O! Did he just ask Kurt to pack his bags and leave?

So looking forward to this episode.

At last a Kurt story-line; Kurt has been pretty invisible for some time :(

  • Jeffrey Christian

    “Delicate” meaning shrill?
They need to stop giving Colfer solos, stat. 3/5 of them are unbearable. With a few exceptions.

  • Jeffrey Christian

Colfer’s “I Have Nothing” was pretty brutal.

Nope. His voice is beautiful. Always. Its a shame that he doesn’t have that many solos.

Darren Criss’s voice doesn’t fit with diva songs like “Fighter” or “It’s
Not Right, But It’s Okay”, why don’t the producers realize that ?

Maybe since I wasn’t such a big fan of the originals (or the original singers) I like Darren’s take on both songs. But I can see how de-urbanizing the songs would annoy fans of the originals.

I would have never chosen him to sing a Whitney song, his voice is too delicate for a diva type of song

His voice isn’t too delicate for the song–it’s the arrangement that’s the problem. I can’t believe they have him basically singing to Whitney’s backing track. Chris does not have a very high range in his chest voice. In order to hit the high notes, he has to switch to his head voice, where his vocal becomes thin and shrill just when it needs power. It’s not his fault, he’s doing the best with the arrangement he was expected to sing.

But the song fits his storyline. I’m glad they didn’t just toss a bunch of her songs together without threading them together in a coherent way. Amber would have done a beautiful job with “I Have Nothing” but what would have been the point? That she’d have nothing without Sam? They aren’t even dating.

I wish they had changed the arrangement for Chris–lowered the key, took away some of the bombast, made it more intimate. I”m NOT a fan of the original at all. It’s too over the top for my tastes.

I have the song streaming on repeat on my computer lol!. I agree, maybe the arrangement could have been better. The verses are so beautifully sung but I don’t think his high notes were shrill.  It can’t compare to Whitney’s powerhouse take but they were on key and pitch perfect. But I don’t think this is the highest he’s sung. His solo on Defying Gravity had an even higher note and I love love him on that song.

  • Axxxel

Agree with “almost everything”…  Am not  comfortable either with this Whitney Houston tribute …

EXCEPT for the storylines and of course the song “How will I know”… such a diamond… They could have easily kept this beautiful song and use other songs to emphasize their storylines… Oh well…

  • Axxxel

Yeah… Hee Jun, Hee Jun, Hee Jun !!!

  • Axxxel

Chris has to wait for his turn and he is also busy promoting his movie which will premier this saturday in the Tribeca film festival .. yeah !!

  • Axxxel

I  also prefer Chris’ take on “Defying Gravity”. About the quality of the singing, it is almost as good as his rendition of  ” A house is not a home” .Agree with MJ… what ‘s wrong with lowering the key ?

  • Axxxel

Hehehe when I compared their performance of ‘Push it” (Season 1) and ” How will I know” (Season 3)… So funny….

But I don’t think this is the highest he’s sung. His solo on Defying
Gravity had an even higher note and I love love him on that song.

The difference is that in “Defying Gravity” (A performance that I love, by the way) he hits a high note–he’s not singing in the higher reaches of his register for a sustained period. The first verses in “I Have Nothing” are beautiful, but the chorus and everything after the key change sound strained and weak to my ears.

  • Axxxel

This must be a coincidence… Angry Blaine Warbler… Angry bird…. But he looks sexy when angry…. ;-) (and I am not a Blaine fan).

I can’t stop playing How Will I Know. It’s stellar. The four of them sound so good together. I love when Glee turns out arrangements like this. When that drum beat kicks in towards the end, the song enters another level.
