Glee Season 5: Previously Unaired Christmas – Listen to Full Songs (AUDIO)

Chris Colfer, Lea Michele and Naya are Gleeful Elves

Glee The Music: The Christmas Album, Vol. 4 comes out December 3, but you can here all 6 songs here right now.

The album is the soundtrack to the Glee episode, “Previously Unaired Christmas” airing on FOX Thursday December 5. The premise of the musical comedy’s fall finale, is that a Christmas special taped last year was too “hot” for FOX to air. I’m not even kidding about that.

In a re-imagined Christmas of 2012, Santana is in NYC, working at a mall as a Santa’s helper with Kurt and Rachel. The trio also work as live models in Christmas windows. Back in Lima, New Directions puts on a Nativity pageant.

Remember Dallas, when an entire season turned out to be a cast members fevered dream? Or the finale of St. Elsewhere when it was revealed the entire series happened in the mind of Dr. Westphal’s autistic son? This special is kinda like that. Blaine spending Christmas with Kurt and Burt in NYC, Rachel taking a cruise with her Dads, Jake roadtripping to LA with his brother Noah–forget that stuff. It didn’t happen.

In Christmas 2012, Finn was still very much alive. I’m guessing the writers got around that by not mentioning him at all.

ETA: The really weird thing about this episode, is that it disregards canon, but doesn’t erase it. It’s as if the Glee writers penned an AU (alternate universe) fan fiction. It’s a way to have a Christmas special outside of the current plotline, which is still stuck in spring of 2013.

The music. Here Comes Santa Clause is hilarious. Even funnier are Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Naya Rivera with their voices sped up just like the Chipmunks. You probably didn’t think Chris’s voice could go any higher. Wrong!

Are they just throwing darts at the board these days to generate plots? This show just rockets from one random vignette to fad dance to random whatever. A celebrity guest star? OOOOOO! Shiny! Let’s obsess over it.

Sure, the show always had elements of this, but it seems to be going into epic overdrive this year. I don’t know if losing Finn has not yet been resolved (still trying to re-work storylines) or what, but they need to find some direction, stat.

  • Montavilla

I expect that Unique will be singing “Love Child” as Mary in the nativity play.

  • Landon Cox

So they were just like, to hell with continuity?

I imagine it would be just as messed up and lacking continuity had Finn not died. Remember they still haven’t graduated from last year or gone to Sectionals or Regionals or whatever the heck Glee Club actually does.

  • Miz

    Exactly.

Pretty much. But I’m not sure it’s a rewriting of cannon, perse, as a re imagining. . It’s a way to have a Christmas special out of the current timeline, which is stuck spring 2013.

I just re-checked the spoiler link, and the synopsis says the members of New Directions audition for McKinley’s living nativity scene. I’ll bet Unique auditions with “Love Child.”

  • Landon Cox

And we’re sure that the timelines are mutually exclusive? Or is this just filling in more details about last christamas, ie it takes place before the cruise, etc.

  • Landon Cox

Also didn’t Santana move to NYC in February 2013? This is some lazy ass writing.

This should have just been a flash forward episode.

  • Kirsten

It’s as if the Glee writers penned an AU (alternate universe) fan fiction

No, I’m sorry, this doesn’t get to qualify to be AU. AU is when you say “What if something occurred differently at a critical juncture – how would this world be different?”. Tasha Yar is still alive, Monica is still fat and Willow is a kick-a$$ Vampire. If the only difference is, we did what we did two years ago when we filmed Christmas special, except it didn’t air (and we never, ever mentioned a word about it), that’s not worth a parallel universe.

It’s just lazy writing. It’s treating the audience like they are morons. It’s phoning it in.

I’d rather they just said that the NY crew was filming a Christmas show in April/May (maybe it could be a pilot!) and have Will give the kids in Lima a random Christmas song assignment.

Fanfiction gets to do lame AUs because they are exploring characters in different ways and nobody pays to read it (unless it gets turned into a terrible romance series and a movie nobody wants to star in). Plus, most fanfiction is lame. And a little creepy.

Now, if they completely ham it up into a Fanfiction episode complete with an obvious Gary Stu to represent Ryan Murphy, I might chuckle at their “Ode to Fanfiction”. Otherwise, I think its time for the writers to apply themselves a little better to their jobs.

IDK I guess this is just the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. This entire season has been all over the freakin’ map.

What celebrity guest star is being obsessed over?? Demi certainly isn’t and Adam has only been on one episode. I’m really enjoying both of them so far, but I hardly see some writer obsession lol. I love seeing the NY crew and like the widening of their circle, if only for a short time.

This is a little late, but…

I believe this episode is off cannon because of what Micheal Hitchcock, one of the Glee writers tweeted about the inconsistencies:

“Santana was visiting NYC in that episode, and Blaine stayed in Lima for Christmas. One of the reasons Fox never aired it.”

  • Cingara

Adam has been in two episodes, but not obsessed over I don’t think. And Demi has been very low key. She has been very busy doing other things, and also said on the View that as someone who had weight issues she doesn’t love being on camera.
New viewer myself, I don’t stress about plots or timelines for this kind of show and this episode was cute and funny and I enjoyed the musical numbers. Some very nice voices in the cast too.
