GLEE: Unique (Alex Newell, L) and Marley (Melissa Benoist, R) perform in the

Check out these full songs from the Sadie Hawkins episode 11 of Glee, airing Thursday January 24!

In this episode, Tina and the girls organize a Sadie Hawkins dance at McKinley High. Tina has a method to her madness–she has a crush on Blaine. Uhm. That’s a little hopeless, isn’t it? She sings “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” in response. And the girls open the episode with “Tell Him” as way to empower themselves.

Meanwhile, Sam and Blaine investigate a possible CHEATING scandal at Dalton. You know what that means. New Directions will end up back in the Regionals game!

The McKinley boys sing “No Scrubs” at the dance. Ryder only has eyes for…Marly!  And the arrangement of “Baby Got Back” is. Uhm. Interesting.  Not the least because a singer, Jonathan Coulton, is claiming Glee ripped off his arrangement. Oops.

And Kurt meets a new love interest named Adam (Oliver Kieran Jones)  at NYADA. Since we ALL know Klaine is end game, a dalliance with the new cutie will be no biggie.   Adam and the NYADA Apples sing a rather, uhm, interesting version of “Baby Got Back.”  Will the performance be reminiscent of Blaine serenading Kurt with “Teenage Dream” back in Season 2?  Hm.

BTW,  the arrangement of “Baby Got Back”  is causing quite the controversy.  Singer,  Jonathan Coulton, is claiming Glee ripped off his arrangement. Oops.

The twitterverse is exploding about #backgate right now.

    ouch…

Jenna (Tina) should have more solo’s. Really liked this solo about “impossible love”….Usually she sings together with Chris (Kurt) in group… (remember ABC last season ?)….I also liked her when she sang in “Shake it out”, together with Amber (Mercedes) and Naya (Santana)…

That’s pretty lame of Glee to do that.

    NO SCRUBS. Ahhh. Love.

What was the source of your audio tracks?

Tina sounds so beautiful! I’m so glad Glee is back.

I don’t have proof, but some are saying that this guy posted his version in youtube, but never had permission from Sir-Mix-Alot. People have to remember that anything they post online is fair game. This guy has no claim if he didn’t secure the rights for the song.

It’s till cheap to steal someone elses idea.

Just wondering… In American Idol… contestants do borrow someone else’s version of a performance… e.g. Adam Lambert and the Gary Jules version of “Mad World”… (the original Mad World version from Tears for Fears sounds more like  a dance track)…. Did he ask permission for that from Gary Jules ?

It’s different when doing covers I think. But copy catting someones cover is a little shady. I’m sure a lot of artists do it.

  • Axxxel

Did the Glee guys mention whose cover they were using ? Adam did mention that he used the version used in the movie in Donnie Darko…And American Idol showed a clip of the movie,  but he did not mention the singer of that version at the time.

I think that on Idol the contestant doesn’t ask permission to sing a song, it has to be cleared by the producers. For instance, Adam expressed interest in singing the Gary Jules version of Mad World, then it has to be cleared first. ( Or Cook with his covers, or Kris Allen with his )

He says Glee ripped off his “cover” of the song. Meaning it’s not his song to begin with and he may have no rights to it.

Tina apparently almost kisses Blaine, but a third party interrupts. That from a blogger who says they’ve seen it, but won’t say who that third party is. First Rachel, now Tina. Why do girls get attracted to guys they can’t have? Chris just said in an interview he gets tweets from girls who want to “convert” him. They just don’t get it.

You guys, copyright law is clear on this. If your arrangement adds new lyrics or other significant changes, it is still protected. It is called a derivative work. His version is copyrighted. If they wanted to use his version, which they blatantly did, they had to get a license to do so. They’re gonna have to pay him a big, fat paycheck, and they look really shady along the way.

  • Montavilla

I seem to remember some controversy a year or two ago about a Leona Lewis song that allegedly ripped off an audio track.   Here’s a story about it.  Apparently, Syco and the DJ who created the track came to an agreement and he got partial credit for the song.

Putting his work on youtube doesn’t mean that Jonathon Coulton was giving up any rights he has to it.  If he does have legal rights, the upload date on his video will help prove his ownership of his work.

Even if he doesn’t have copyright for the arrangement, the classy move would have been for Glee‘s producers to send him an email, ask for permission, credit him properly, and/or throw a few bucks his way.

This is not true. He had a license for his work, and it was copyrighted as a derivative work, which means it is still protected, and Glee was required to get a license to use it.

Thanks.  I didn’t know if arrangements were covered or not.  With all the creativity and work that goes into remixes and such, it should be.  I’m glad to see it.

To be honest, I like Glee’s version of Baby Got Back better than that Jonathan guy’s version. :-O   but it still doesn’t beat when Rachel and Ross sang it on that one episode of Friends.

But with all that aside, it’s still a horrible song, in my opinion.  The lyrics …what the heck.

I thought Tina got back together with Mike

  • Axxxel

hope there will be some Tike drama after this episode.

  • Axxxel

Maybe it is because of the challenge. Or maybe some girls and grown up women think they can change people’s behaviour, taste…In the same way society wants girls and women to change to comform the norm… I think the third party is Sam?? or a phonecall from Mike ?
