Glee – Hear Cory Monteith Sing “Losing My Religion”

GLEE: Finn (Cory Monteith) prays to a sandwich in the "Grilled Cheesus" episode of GLEE airing Tuesday, Oct. 5 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2010 Fox Broadcasting Co. CR: Adam Rose/FOX

Listen to Cory Monteith do his best, nasally, high-pitched impression of Michael Stipe singing REM’s “Losing My Religion”.

Personal disclosure: I’m somewhat of a REM stan so…yeah.  I think I’ll go listen to the original.

So, what do you think? Do you like Corey’s ode to a grilled cheese sandwich?  (Yes, Finn is praying to a magical grilled cheese sandwich in the photo).

UPDATE: Listen to the rest of Tuesday’s tunes “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “I Look To You”, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” “One of Us,” “Only The Good Die Young,” and “Papa Can You Hear Me.” HERE.

This is the grilled cheesus episode? I wonder why they don’t have it playing here.

    Kurt’s song is beautiful.

I honestly don’t know how Cory got this part, weakest singer in the whole cast. Surely, there were other’s who auditioned, that were better?

  • Holden

He sounds ok, not bad but not great.

The real question is why this song is being used in the first place. The phrase “losing my religion” is slang for “losing my temper.” The song has nothing to do with religion.

I’d rather be surpised on tuesday thnx :)

I have to admit to never having watched a single episode of Glee, but decided to listen to this because I like REM. I’m now beginning to wonder what all the fuss is about Glee, that is very, very, mediocre. And it’s studio recording? Is that the standard of singing they have there? Tim Urban sounds far better in his studio recordings.

  • fuzzywuzzy

I’m not liking any of these renditions. I agree that Cory is, at best, a pretty average singer, very karaoke, IMO.

I agree- I cringe every time I see one coming.

Believe me, if it were, there wouldn’t be this many Gleeks :).

Finn’s voice is almost factually the weakest, so close to factually that I almost stopped talking to my friend for a week because she said “Finn has the best voice on Glee.” Glee is serious business, and the sad part is that I’m only half joking about not talking to my friend. I do like his character and there are worse singers (not on Glee) but wow.

Cory’s not a great singer, but I can tell from his rendition that he’s a big REM fan. He put the right attitude into the song. I just love Finn.

There are some fantastic singers on Glee, but I would never buy music from the show. I like the characters and the writing more than the singing most of the time.

Cory got the part because he’s a good actor. In lesser hands, Finn would come off as a stereotypical dumb jock, but Corey plays the character with emotion and nuance. I love him on the show…but his singing, not so much.

  • sunchick

I agree MJ. I think Cory’s quite a gifted actor. And not a bad drummer. As a singer? Yeah not so much. Either way I can’t imagine anyone else playing Finn.

This episode pretty much had me at “Grilled Cheesus” before it even airs.

I agree. He makes the Finn character work.

I think most of the men are on the show because of their acting….none of them are Fantastic singers. The woman on the other hand I really think they are all rather superb singers. I agree and also think Corey is a great Finn….But I am also not a fan of his take of Losing my Religion. This is one of my favorite songs of all time. (I see I am not alone in that thought) :-) He disappointed me. He could have done better.

I think Glee should do a Idol themed episode. Do songs of the various idols. (No Coronation songs allowed though… )I know they have done some songs from Kelly and I think Daughtry or David Cook or Crush by Archie. Am I right? But I am talking an exclusive episode to idol (Except for Carrie because they could do a whole show of her songs) Which brings me to the question have they even done a country themed episode. Where all the songs are Country Songs? ( I guess you could argue that Kelly Clarkson and Daughtry have enough material for exclusive episodes too)

I digress…..Anyway Corey brings a 3 dimensional quality to the part of Finn. Usually I think in Comedies the Jock or Finn type of character gets portrayed very flat or as a shell of a person. Corey breathes depth to the character and makes Finn more then a character. IMHO

  • Esqt

This is interesting. Oh, Whoopi, where art thou?

  • Grammie Kari

I also think Corey takes Finn to another level. You can’t help but like him. I was surprised he got the part because of his age and voice.

I don’t recall a country music theme on Glee.

  • St.Lucia

I love how Cory portrays Finn and if he were gone I’d miss him on the show, but I’d prefer he not open his mouth to sing. His singing is mediocre at best and it frustrates me sometimes because he gets a lot of solos when so many Gleeksters sing so much better than him.

However, can’t replace him, I just opt not to download any of the tunes he sings solo on. I can handle him at times when he’s dueting with Rachel or has a verse or two within a group song, but that’s about all the Finn I can handle singing wise. I sometimes wish he’d stop being the go to male singer for most things.

I am obsessed with the Glee version of “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”. I am sure it is going to be a great TV moment when paired with the visuals on Tuesday.

  • jacie

i agree, cory is great as finn. he makes the dumb jock bit look adorable. the weakest in the bunch in both acting and singing i think, is dianna. her expression hardly ever changes.

Crying already @ listening to Kurt’s “I want to hold your hand”. Tuesday will be a two box of kleenex night I’m afraid.
