Glee: Chord Overstreet OUT, Darren Criss, Harry Shum Jr. IN

foxupfront-49

Oh wow! Looks like poor Mercedes is going to have to find a new boyfriend, because Chord Overstreet, who plays her current love interest, Sam will NOT be returning to Glee for Season 3!

Darren Criss and Harry Shrum Jr. will be back. TV Line has the scoop:

First the good: Darren Criss (Blaine) and Harry Shum Jr. (Mike) have officially been upgraded to full-time series regulars, effective this fall with the start of Season 3.

And now for the not so good news…

Chord Overstreet’s series regular option has not been picked up. However, a source close to the show says the actor — who joined the Fox hit last fall in the recurring role of McKinley transfer student Sam Evans — could return as an occasional guest star.

Chord tweeted earlier tonight, “It’s been a good year. Too bad it’s over. Time for summer and starting fresh.”

His character joined Glee in September. His character was never fleshed out, never got a decent backstory  until the end of the season, when Sam’s family became homeless and it was revealed they were living in a hotel room together after his dad lost his job.

In the finale, it was revealed that Sam and Mercedes had become a secret couple.  It seemed like the producers were finally ready to flesh out an interesting storyline for both characters.

Not. Another plot line left to twist in the wind. Sads.

Sam was a boring character, but I lay that problem fully at the feet of the producer/writers who failed to write him decent stuff. Sam remained a cipher the entire season.

It’s no surprise that Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr. are coming back.  Darren was the breakout star of the season and was part of the only decent, fully developed plotline of the season–the Chris Colfer/Kurt Hummel bullying saga.

This new development has got to be disappointing for Chord. But he doesn’t plan to remain idle.  Yesterday, he tweeted, “getting close to the end of the tour, cant wait to start working on my album when i get home!!! im gonna go full on!”

Some of Chord’s best moments

I could not find a video of his Sections performance of “Time of My Life” with Quinn ANYWHERE.

I’m glad that Darren and Harry will be staying – I really enjoy them both on the show. I was looking forward to the Sam/Mercedes storyline! Oh well……

  • Montavilla

There were rumors that Chord Overstreet was originally cast to be Kurt’s prom date at the end of the year — but then that storyline was changed because supposedly the chemistry was better between Sam and Quinn.

If so, it wasn’t that evident to the viewers and it seemed like the producers never really got a handle on what to do with Sam. At the beginning, he seemed like a replacement Finn. He was pretty, he played football, he could sing and dance without a lot of distinction. He got jerked around a lot by Quinn.

I guess he’s suffering the fate of the Glee Project finalists. If you aren’t interesting enough to inspire the producers, you don’t get called back.

Aww I’m really sad about this. I’m going to miss Sam/Chord =(

Does this mean there’s a good chance the Glee Project winner is a guy? I hope it was Cameron then, or even Damian.

  • bentley1530

Is the tour over? If not, it must be pretty awkward for the haves and the have nots. Of course the guy who was dropped last year was also went on the tour but it was a much shorter tour. I liked Sam in the first few episodes but the writers seemed to lose interest in him.

Interesting. Cameron would be a pretty good Sam replacement.

  • Volveras

Forget Glee! Their loss. Chord needs to make a kick @#$ album and go on tour with his brother’s band Hot Chelle Rae as their opener!!
    :-)

I feel bad for the actor losing his job but “Sam” was a useless character just taking up space. I would be ok with “Mike” being gone too if they didn’t need a random male dancer in the background of some song performances.

I’ll been watching The Glee Project, so I’m curious too if this has anything to do with the winner of that show.

I remember that. I never quite believed it though. I think it originated with Jane Lynch, who may have been a little confused over who was playing what.

I’ll been watching The Glee Project, so I’m curious too if this has anything to do with the winner of that show.

Ryan Murphy has stressed in several interviews that the winner of the Glee project gets a 7 episode arc that involves Sue Sylvester wanting to destroy him/her. So I don’t think think the winner will take Chord’s place.

But what’s stopping Murphy, Idol-style from hiring and promoting an also ran? That could happen.

The producers WILL be hiring new faces for the show. They have to, as several of the major characters will likely be leaving forever at season’s end.

I think a lot of good actors in Glee suffer from poor script writing. Many of these characters would easily outshine Rachel and Finn if they had better writing, but the writers seem to back off whenever someone starts to get interesting (e.g. Puck, Brittany (sp?) and even Sam, who I thought had a lot of potential). Mercedes is one of the least interesting characters, IMO, but I blame the writers, who make her character very one-dimensional (plus, their blatant overuse of stereotypes is a big turnoff). And I’m glad they brought back Harry, but it took me at least 2 months to realize that he could talk.

Darren Criss is probably the best thing that happened to Glee in the second season, but even he can’t get me to watch that show anymore.

  • mandabutter

Damn, look at that thread PIC! Mercedes is gonna miss out on that mouth?! Sorry girl.

LOL. I am sad though… I’m gonna miss his Matthew McConaughey impressions & the Navi language. They started to make him a lovable dork early on, too bad.
Really looking forward to Season 3. Not sure if the “source” is really serious about Sam occasionally popping up on the series from time to time.
So he may, for example, transfer to another school if his dad/mom gets a job outside of town and then just “runs into” one of the NDs…

  • mandabutter

Plus, he was one of the characters that wasn’t a junior this year, he didn’t run for Prom king and they didn’t commit him to being a Soph or Jr., did they??

ETA: My fave is Santana, so no touching Naya Rivera. Lock her IN producers!
I would be fine with losing Lauren Zises (sorry Ashley Fink -you’re probs lovely) OH, and while they’re taking viewer notes, more BEISTE!

  • littlefishes

I think the problem I’ve always had with the Sam character was that he seem to start out as the new hot guy rival to Finn’s good-guy HS football star character but then the writers ditched that idea pretty quickly. In some episodes he was written as a dumb as rocks cute jock, but in others as an adorably cute geek-y jock, so I’m guessing Ryan Murphy didn’t know “how to write for” that character. Which means no call back for him!

  • fuzzywuzzy

I was never very interested in Sam, so I won’t miss him. I wish Chord well though. He’s cute and seems like a nice guy.

  • idolfan92

With the Glee Project thing, I’m not saying the winner is going to replace Sam. But the winner has already been picked. And I’m saying maybe this is a sign it was a guy. And then maybe they decided they needed to take out one of the guys on the show. Cause aren’t they already supposed to get 2 new girls regardless of the Glee Project? That’d be 3 new girls (obviously not all on ND) if TGP winner was a girl but why then would they axe Sam? That’s why I’m thinking TGP winner is a guy. Which I hope happens.

If say, Damian, won TGP, he would most likely be a foreign exchange student so it wouldn’t really look like he’s replacing Sam. And maybe the winner won’t join ND at all. But if it’s Damian I don’t see why he wouldn’t since the foreign exchange line works perfectly for the school. But if it’s someone like Cameron or Samuel I could see them being on a rival school instead. Personally though I’d rather have the winner on ND.

  • St.Lucia

Would have been heartbroken if my tv boyfriend Darren wasn’t coming back…but that would have SHOCKED me with the response Darren got for portraying Blaine on the show! They knew losing him would be a big loss.

I’d like to say I’m sad about Chord leaving, but I’m really not. He was consistently my least favorite character on the show, and I liked his voice very little. They really gave him a crap storyline and then pairing him with Quinn wasn’t really helping any. It was a ho-hum boring couple and I even found myself liking Quinn much less when they were together. I wish Chord the best. Wait, is he dating or was he rumored to have been dating Taylor Swift? If that’s the case he’ll be just fine without Glee, lol!

  • kmd

To be honest I will not miss Chord. I thought his Sam character was kind of boring on the show.

  • St.Lucia

you know interestingly enough, they finally give Sam somewhat of a storyline with the homelessness and the possibly pairing of him and Mercedes and he was becoming SLIGHTLY more interesting and then they kick him off? They made him so boring as the try hard jock who was dating the prettiest girl and completely hung up on his looks…and then he gets somewhat of a storyline and bye bye, Sam.

I suppose in a sense I can already see how he’s going to be kicked off…since he’s homeless his dad/mom will get a job somewhere else in Ohio/or some other state entirely and there goes Sam. It’ll be mentioned by Mr. Schue or Mercedes at the beginning of season 3. Well played, writers.

  • Grammie Kari

St. Lucia, you bring out some good points. It would seem the homelessness theme was an important and relevant issue which continues today. I am sad that Sam/Chord is leaving. I really liked him.

  • Allison

I really liked the songs Chord sang esp. Baby and Friday. I’m going to miss him.

  • cheese

Aww, I like Chord more than I like Darren (sacrilege, I know). Sam had some good moments, but nearly every character on Glee is boring/annoying sometimes.

Actually, I like all of the male characters on Glee, but I wouldn’t mind losing Quinn and Rachel.

Wow… what total misrepresentation of the media report. Just because Chord wasn’t offered a series regular contract does NOT mean he has been let go from the series. Doesn’t even mean he will have less screen time than this year.

Chord, Harry, Darren and Ashley (Lauren) were all on recurring guest star status this past season while Mike O’Malley, who plays Kurt’s father, was a series regular. Guess how many episodes they each appeared in?

    Chord (21), Harry (22), Darren (13), Ashley (17), Mike (8).

Btw, Max Adler (Dave Karofsky) appeared in 12 episodes while Lauren Potter (Becky) appeared in 14.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Doesn’t even mean he will have less screen time than this year.

??? Yes it does. He was in nearly every episode last year. Now he MAY come back for an occasional guest spot…or not.

I would say Chord’s relationship with the show has changed drastically. And so do Chord’s tweets, as he’s indicated that he’s ready to move on.

  • Ratna12

If say, Damian, won TGP, he would most likely be a foreign exchange student so it wouldn’t really look like he’s replacing Sam. And maybe the winner won’t join ND at all. But if it’s Damian I don’t see why he wouldn’t since the foreign exchange line works perfectly for the school

I’m good with that. I think he has charisma. I don’t know why he kept being in the bottom 3. He’ll be in trouble in next week’s episode I think because there will be dancing. LOL.

Sam is just a background person since the writer is too busy writing for Darren Criss character. I feel that even Kurt is being sacrificed.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/RemusL/ RemusL

??? Yes it does. He was in nearly every episode last year. Now he MAY come back for an occasional guest spot…or not.

I guess I’m guilty of helping to perpetuate the erroneous assumption that the number of episodes an actor appears in is synonymous with his/her screen time. But of course, that’s inaccurate. Guest stars like Kristin Chenoweth and Gwyneth Paltrow had way more total screen time in their few appearances than some actors who appeared in many more episodes. Many of Chord’s appearances were quite brief – fans were lamenting that he didn’t get a real storyline till the end of the season. As a recurring supporting character, that’s really as it should be.

I would say Chord’s relationship with the show has changed drastically. And so do Chord’s tweets, as he’s indicated that he’s ready to move on.

You mean this tweet from July 1st (2 days from the end of the Glee tour)? “well its been a good yr too bad its over, time for summer and starting fresh” Seems more like he’s commenting on the end of their concert tour.

…Sad day. ): I was really hoping for the Sam/Mercedes plot to actually be taken somewhere. I was literally like, jumping for joy when they held hands. Jumping for joy, seriously. And I agree about Sam being a pretty boring character, but still. They had room for the character to grow and FINALLY get Mercedes some love. Damn!
