Glee Casting: Gloria Estefan in Talks to Play Santana’s Mom

Looks like Glee is planning a star-studded (well–if it were 1998) episode to air in January after the Christmas  hiatus.  THR confirms that Latin music star, Gloria Estefan is in talks with the show to play Santana’s (Naya Rivera) mom.

Estefan will appear in the same episode as fellow Latin star, Ricky Martin, who is negotiating to play a McKinley High Spanish Teacher.

The episode will also likely feature some of Estafan’s music. It’s been reported that Martin will sing a couple of numbers.

So I guess New Directions will get to sing along from their choir chairs.  As I’ve already said, guest star-laden episodes are typically not my favorites.  Count me as someone who’s  not excited at the prospect of the cast having to make room for TWO guest stars in one show.

    I don’t like the stunt casting either. I’m glad they aren’t dropping Santana’s story line and I hope they don’t mess it up more than they did last night.

    I’m a huge Gloria fan, so I love that casting decision and it goes with a plotline that already exists. Not a fan of the Ricky Martin story, though, because it takes away from any story that already exists.

    I love Gloria being casted as Santana’s Mom!  I wonder if they will do a duet. Her songs have so much passion and energy and there hasn’t been a focus on Latino music.

    Well, Gloria has the ethnic look that is needed as Santana’s mother. I wonder how they will depict her career – stay at home Mom, cleaning lady/waitress, semi-famous singer, community activist? 

    I’m happy to see parents being introduced into Glee. It’s something that bothered me about the show. Family dynamic is a strong part of growing up and it makes for better character development.

    I definitely like the idea of meeting Santana’s mom.  It helps flesh out the kids.  We’ve met Mike’s parents, Quinn’s parents, Finn’s mom, Kurt’s dad and all drove story.  Hopefully Santana’s mom will help ease the hurt caused by her “abuela.” Estefan actually seems like a good choice that is age and talent appropriate for the show.  Would feel differently if they tried to shoehorn JLo, Eva Longoria or Charo into the role as Santana’s mom.   

    I’m waiting for horrific stunt casting like Robin Williams and Billy Crystal as Rachel’s gay dads purely to drive ratings to the detriment of any story or character.
